Mr Bill Biscoe, Barossa Vintage Festival President.
The Barossa Vintage Festival has been held biennially since 1947, and it is my privilege to invite you to help celebrate the 2013 Festival. It is interesting to consider what we are celebrating. The first Festival was simply a Procession and a Ball in the European tradition of giving thanks for reaching the end of a successful vintage. Now, the Festival is so much more: certainly the end of the hard work of vintage deserves thanks, but a quick look at the programme shows so much more for which we should be thankful. The Barossa is not just a region, it is a group of people, who share common goals and a common pride in our unique culture. Certainly, much of our publicity is aimed at the tourist market – after all, we love to show off what we have to people who live elsewhere – but our own community celebrations are just as important to our own community.
A quick glance at the programme shows that almost all the events are convened by volunteers and run by volunteers. Over 1,500 people give up their time and their effort to stage this Festival. Although we have a Festival Manager, who always does a great job of pulling all these diverse events together, everybody else is a volunteer, from the Festival Committee to the Young Ambassadors to the people working at each location, whether it is a Town Day or an Art Exhibition or an historical event or a dinner or lunch. My sincere thanks to all of you – the Vintage Festival simply would not exist without your work. My thanks to The Leader for its continuing support of the Festival. The Barossa Vintage Festival is a unique and time-honoured tradition in Australia. I invite you to be part of it. BILL BISCOE, President Join the Schrapel family at

The official opening event of the 2013 Barossa Vintage Festival will again kick off at Seppeltsfield Winery with the family friendly Carnival. This will be the third time that the festival has started on Easter Saturday, March 30 with such an event says Ms Nicole Hodgson, convenor. Designed to be an affordable day with the family as an introduction into one of the busiest weeks for locals, visitors and international guests, the Barossa comes alive with festivities. The Carnival programme starts at 10.30 a.m. with Murray the Magician and performances by Cool for Kids. Free Easter egg hunts will run in the morning and afternoon for the hundreds of children expected to attend the event. There will be rides on a bouncy castle, children’s games and face painting all available, plenty to keep the little ones amused. The first round of the grape treading competition will also take place on the oval, with opportunities for anyone in the crowd to get in and have a go!
Vintage Festival president, Mr Bill Biscoe “Carnival is what the Vintage Festival is all about. Families coming together and sharing the pleasures of good food, good wine and, above all, the shared joy of living in one of the great regions of Australia.” Seppeltsfield Road Business Alliance will play host to the wine tent with over 12 wineries and even the introduction of an Apple Cider from the Barossa Valley Cider Co. Tastings are available and don’t forget to pick up your souvenir wine glass for only $5. Supporting local community will be the Tanunda Lutheran School donuts, Marananga Tennis club soft drinks and Kiwanis chicken and beef rolls along with plenty of other food options including Tanunda Ice-creams. The day finishes with local musos, Rielly Ellendon and Colonel Mustard. Come and enjoy the day or food, wine and fun at the Barossa Vintage Festival Carnival.

Introducing the Barossa’s newest Cafe...
Vintage
Grape treading Back in the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s, grape treading was the exclusive domain of winery teams, where great pride was at stake. As with most things, it has evolved to be all inclusive, male/female, young and old. Hence an all-comers’ competition and a school’s competition, with trophies awarded by Australian cork company a n d L i e b i c h We i n respectively, along with other prizes donated by local business. Teams of two can enter at any of the Town Days listed below, but they must notify the Vintage Festival Office on 8563 0663 or ring Ron Liebich 0418 817 968 to ensure enough grapes are brought to go around. The top six teams
over the week will be asked to tread off at Williamstown on the last Sunday, with all six teams taking home prizes. Heats will be held at: • Carnival at Seppeltsfield - Easter Saturday, March 30. • Lyndoch Family Fun Day - Easter Monday, April 1, • Angaston Town Day - Wednesday April 3. • Novotel Tanunda Town Day - Thursday, April 4. • Barossa Brunch Nuriootpa Saturday, April 6. • Finals, Williamstown Sunday April 7. N.B. Any Williamstown teams should tread at Lyndoch or any of the other Town Day venues. It is fun to have a go, great entertainment, so get stomping!

Visitors welcome to see Tanunda Liedertafel This year, as a celebration of the Barossa Vintage Festival, members of Tanunda Liedertafel will be welcoming visitors and locals to a special practice night at the Barossa Regional Gallery on April 2 at 8 p.m. A light supper will be served. Tanunda Liedertafel grew from the passion of those men who travelled with Pastor Kavel and others to a new life in Australia. An old music book case, still in the possession of the Liedertafel is evidence of its beginning with the “Tanunda Liedertafel 1861” painted on its metal lid. During both World Wars the Liedertafel went into recess, but continued its former activities from 1920 to November, 1940, and again from March, 1946 to the present. Among the 22 German-speaking choirs throughout Australia - all in major cities, the 53-member Tanunda Liedertafel is probably unique in that, besides being the only country choir, it comprises singers of Dutch, English, Polish, Scottish, Welsh, Swiss and Irish backgrounds. Over the years the Liedertafel has performed at hundreds of concerts, not only in Tanunda and Adelaide, but also in as many as 50 centres throughout Australia, raising many thousands of dollars for charitable purposes.
Its permanent annual fixture is the “Kaffee Abend” in mid-November celebrated cabaret style and entertaining an audience of twelve hundred people. The choir has contributed immeasurably to the cultural tradition, prestige and spirit of the town, and together with the local Town Band, has placed Tanunda in a leading position in the State’s musical life. Its musical repertoire numbers more than 250 songs. Two of these composed specifically for the Liedertafel, one by the late Dr. Perkins of the Adelaide Conservatorium of Music, and the other by the Director of the S.A. Symphony Orchestra, the late Sir Henry Krips. In its existence spanning almost one and a half centuries it has had only six conductors including the present conductor, Mr Robert Homburg, OAM who has been influential in lifting the standards of the choir. The current accompanist, Gwenda Rees, OAM joined the choir in 2007. The choir practises for two hours each Tuesday night for eleven months of the year and while its fifty-three members no longer are fined three pence for being late, or six pence for non-attendance, they continue to attend each week for the sheer joy of meeting and singing together.

Father Mark Sexton, Pastor Pete Traeger and Pastor Richard Ansoul are inviting you to join them at the Mengler’s Hill lookout for an ecumenical Easter Sunday Sunrise Service.
He and his wife, Ruth, travel overseas extensively each year, in special outreach to several Muslim communities. He has served as the secretary of the BEMA for many years. In the vision for the founding of South Australia by the pioneer, George Fife Angas, it was envisaged that the historic separations of the Christian Church would fade away in the new colony. The annual combined Easter sunrise service at Mengler’s Hill is just one expression of that dream being fulfilled, as Christians celebrate their common faith in Jesus Christ, risen from the dead. Mark, Pete and Richard represent the various colours of the spectrum of Christian faith. The sunrise service has been blessed over the years with a variety of demonstrations of the hand of God, rainbows, hot air balloons, mists parting on cue and sensational dawn lights. 9:16 The service is open to everyone.

Barossa Festival Whistler Twilight Concert - “Sounds of the Barossa” Vintage
On Easter Monday, the Whistler Wines’ team at Marananga are again hosting a night of local entertainment with “Sounds of the Barossa”. After a busy Easter weekend at Whistler, including the huge Easter Sunday Family Fun Day, the Pfeiffers
will be ready to sit back in the garden and scrub setting, and relax to the sound of music. For those wanting to work off the Easter chocolates there will be music to dance to as the evening wears on with popular groups such as The Valley Cats taking to the stage.
This will be the second time Whistler have staged this very affordable event ($20 adult, $5 children under 15) and it’s sure to be a repeat of the very successful 2011 vintage Festival Twilight Concert that showcased the many talents of the Barossa musical
community. While there is wine available you can bring your own picnic rug, chair and food to have a very affordable and entertaining night amongst the vines and gums at Whistler on Seppeltsfield Road. For more details ring 8562 4942.
Skills, work on show Come and help us celebrate this great Vintage Festival week. All week we will have tasting plates created by celebrated local Chef Mark McNamara. Wines will be available by the glass, so come out and relax on the deck with a glass of wine and some great food and enjoy the great views of the Barossa Valley. The Tasting Room is open from 11am-6pm each day with food starting from 12pm For any enquiries, please contact us on 8563 3935 or tastingroom@artisansofbarossa.com DH2629

A night of laughter Do you enjoy a laugh? The Barossa Vintage Festival is proud to include ‘Comedy in the Vines’ in its 2013 Programme to be held at Linfield Road Wines on April 5. The event was introduced to the Festival Programme in 2011 and adds a new dimension to the events on offer. “We are extremely excited to be
hosting Comedy in the Vines again this year”, says Daniel Wilson of Linfield Road Wines. “The event was so much fun in 2011 and there is a great line-up of talent this year.” Three leading comedians hot from the Fringe and mad March will be featured. Big Al is arguably Adelaide’s most popular and adored comedian with a
quick and charming rapid fire delivery and booming unforgettable laugh. Big Al will be joined by Kehau Jackson and Rich Naberhood. Kehau has been called ‘Australia’s funniest Hawaiian comic’. She is warm and funny with a sharp, sassy take on life. Rich provides laconic and always hilarious insights into everyday life. In over ten years of
touring, Rich has performed with some of Australia’s biggest names. “There will be a great selection of wines for sales on the night, and guests can pre-order supper platters”, advises Daniel. This will be the funniest night in the Festival calendar! Tickets are only $55 each and can be purchased through VenueTix.
B.V. Brewing vintage fun with a twist Barossa Valley Brewing invites you to join them for Vintage fun with a twist. Join their new Brewchef, Alana for a taste sensation and disperse those preconceptions about the humble pint. Beer versus Wine Night – Six courses of fabulous food, beer and wine. In the blue corner we have the wines, in the red corner we have the beers. Enjoy the taste experience as the winemakers and the brewer go head to head competing to see which beverage will match the food better. Brewer and winemakers will describe why they have chosen their beverage with the relevant course.

Raise your glass - and hand to Barossa’s icon and cult wines The riches of Barossa winemaking – past and present – will be on show and available at the 2013 Rare & Distinguished Wine Auction on April 5, part of the biennial Barossa Vintage Festival. This live auction of 120 lots will go under the hammer in Penfolds Red Barrel Cellar in Nuriootpa from 10am (registrations from 9 a.m.), many of which are virtually impossible to source outside the Auction. Managed by the Barossa Grape and Wine Association, all wines are selected by a committee of local wine identities, and includes exceptional one-off lots, rarely obtainable verticals and highly sought after labels. Auction convener, Allister Ashmead says the wines chosen represent the breadth of Barossa winemaking,
with historical icons, cult wines, and emerging stars. “I can’t think of any other Australian wine region that can boast the secondary market following that the Barossa can, which makes this auction one of the most popular events of the Vintage Festival programme, and the region,” Allister said. A highlight is the largest line-up to date of large format bottles, with 32 lots from magnums to imperials, including Penfolds Grange; Rockford Basket Press; Peter Lehmann Stonewell and Langmeil 1843 The Freedom. More than 35 rare verticals are part of the catalogue including Orlando Steingarten Riesling; Elderton Command Shiraz; Torbreck Run Rig Shiraz; John Duval

Plexus SGM and Yalumba The Signature Cabernet Sauvignon; as well as a number of grouped Rare Collections, Wine Experiences and for the True Collector, one off imperial lots including Chris Ringland Barossa Ranges Shiraz 2005; Henschke Hill of Grace 2007 and Penfolds Bin 95 Grange 2008. Auction committee member and winemaker, Louisa Rose says the auction is one of the great gatherings of the local wine community. “This event is special for two reasons. Obviously, the wines are a collector’s paradise, and bidding is always fierce,” Louisa said. “There’s forever a healthy bunch of winemakers who come in search of that end of harvest reward in the guise of something for their cellar.
“It is also special for the winemakers as the auction is one of the biggest gatherings of the region. Most of the wine is donated to fund the ongoing running of the Vintage Festival. It is the wine community giving back to the local community, which has been a tradition since the beginnings of the Vintage Festival in 1947.” All wines are sourced directly from individual wineries and their cellars, and have been stored in optimum conditions. Graham Wright from Oddbins Wine Auctions will conduct the auction, and absentee and phone bids will be accepted. View the complete Auction catalogue, phone bidding facilities, absentee bidder registration form at www.barossavintagefestival.com.au.

Nuriootpa Barossa Brunch – Exciting family fun The newly formed Nuriootpa Futures Association, NFA is planning to take the town into the next era of “Community” co-operation beginning with the Barossa Brunch for this year’s Vintage Festival and lots of the local businesses are already hopping on board to be part of this exciting event. The Barossa Brunch held on Saturday, April 6 is a free family event in the main street of Nuriootpa and is shaping up to be bigger and better than ever before. Organisers are expecting 1,000’s of people to attend and enjoy all the activities planned throughout the morning. This event starts at 9 a.m. and ends at 1 p.m. This year there will not be any wine for sale but the hotels will be open. The street will also be full of displays, live music, dancers and activities for children of all ages, in particular face painting, an animal nursery with reptiles and a climbing wall. Try your skill at grape treading or just enjoy the
roving entertainment. The Groovy Grape Road is back again but children must get in early to get their treats from the shops and stalls as it is only available from 9 - 10 a.m. The famous float procession commences from Coulthard House corner at 10 a.m. So come along, bring a chair, enjoy the best part of the parade and then enjoy a fantastic, family, fun filled morning and celebrate Nuriootpa’s famous Community Spirit with all your neighbours and friends. The NFA committee encourages any church, school, business, service or sporting club to come into town and tell their story. Contact Kathy Schilling on kathrynschilling9@gmail.com and get involved. With coffee and tasty foods from around the local area, Nuriootpa plans to be the meeting place for the Barossa and to showcase some of the best there is from the region. Come along and be part of the fun.

Day) celebrations will provide familybased entertainment at the start of the parade with free face painting, magicians, bands and dance groups and tantalizing food. “The Parade has been running since 1947 and is the single most popular part of the bi-ennial Festival because it gives
families and visitors the chance to have some free fun,” Mr Graeme Longmuir, Chief Executive Officer of The Co-op said. With over 1,200 participants and thousands of spectators, start thinking now about your prime position along the route and make a day of it.

If you haven’t ever taken the time to follow the Scarecrow trail through the Barossa, this is the year to do it! Following on from the huge success of the Scarecrow programme in 2011, there are expected to be an amazing selection of scarecrows on display throughout the Barossa region. The Scarecrow trail will identify the location of every scarecrow registered through the Barossa Vintage Festival office and is something that needs to be seen for yourself. Take a leisurely drive through the Barossa and marvel at the works of creativity made by businesses, schools and individuals. “Once again we are expecting the quality of scarecrows to be exceptional” states Bill Biscoe, Festival President.
Scarecrows will be crafted using a variety of techniques and materials. “We expect to see some very unique pieces again this year” says Bill. It is expected that the use of recycled materials will continue. The community is asked to participate in the Scarecrow trail by voting for their favourite Scarecrow in the “People’s Choice” category. The winning scarecrow will be announced during the Tanunda Town Day celebrations on Thursday, April 4. Bill encourages everyone to “Drop by the Visitor Information Centre or download your copy of the Scarecrow Trail map, get a car load of friends together and follow the Scarecrow Trail throughout the Barossa – you can be sure of an entertaining drive!”

Meet you at the Park ‘Meet You at the Park’ is a new event in the 2013 Barossa V i n t a g e F e s t i v a l c a l e n d a r. Scheduled to take place at the Tanunda Recreation Park, Elizabeth Street, Tanunda on Saturday 6 April between 1pm and 4pm. Entry is free. Following the Parade, the event will celebrate the unique community spirit that drives the Barossa Vintage Festival. The event has been developed to fill a void and provide both visitors and locals somewhere to gather and unwind after the Festival Parade has concluded. “The Festival Parade creates such a buzz and we want to provide the opportunity for spectators to continue celebrating. Family and friends can also catch up with Parade participants and review the morning’s festivities” says Samantha Foreman, Festival Manager. The event will have a strong
emphasis on supporting the local community with sporting groups, special interest groups, schools and other bodies invited to participate. “The Barossa is known for its culture of volunteering, its something that the Festival prides itself on”, says Samantha. “This event will provide the opportunity for community groups to raise funds for their own activities through the sale of food and drinks.” The event will be family friendly and have a relaxed, picnic atmosphere. Attendees are encouraged to bring a rug or chairs but in the spirit of the event are asked to buy food from the stall holders present and give back to the local community. Demonstrations and interactive activities by local sporting and other groups will provide entertainment throughout the afternoon.
After the Vintage Festival Parade, a new event “Meet You at the Park” is set to help continue the festivities at the Tanunda Recreation Park according to event organiser, Ms Samantha Foreman.
Workshops bring floats to a new level A small group of Barossans are taking their float construction to a new level this Barossa Vintage Festival parade after participating in a series of recent workshops. Organised by The Barossa Council in conjunction with the Barossa Vintage Festival, artist Annalise Rees was engaged to assist groups in the creation of their parade floats. Council’s manager, community and culture, Ms Maz McGann said the workshops were a way to encourage and support those creating floats and
to help raise the bar artistically. “In general people are feeling positive about it,” said Maz. “Annalise is very skilled and has a high level of expertise in a range of things.” Barossa Farmers Market manager, Ms Jess Greatwich is involved with the Angaston town float and said the workshops were great. She said brainstorming ideas about ways to construct a float and picking up practical tips has assisted in the town’s float entry. Artist Annalise Rees with workshop participants from back: Pam Young and Greg Bartsch, Barossa Leisure Options and Cherie Hausler, The Co-op. Front: Terene Chapman and Chad Elson, Seppeltsfield Winery; Jess Greatwich, Barossa Farmers Market and Rose Piscioneri, The Co-op.

Some of our customers even travel a great distance just to enjoy our food and this is what it’s all about for Amira and I. Our chickens are delivered fresh, with multiple deliveries throughout the week. We prepare our own seasonings on site that are based on traditional recipes dating back over 30 years. Finally, they are roasted until tender and juicy. Everything we do is prepared onsite using only the freshest of ingredients.

Vintage Name: Ashleigh Fox | Age 22, Ebenezer. Occupation: Executive Assistant at Regional Development Australia Barossa Because I have discovered so much more about the Barossa during my involvement in this programme, I want to share what I have learnt and help people recognise how many great opportunities the Barossa offers.
Name: Cassie Ferrett | Age 23, Tanunda. Occupation: Sales & Events Coordinator. As a young ambassador I hope to make the most of this opportunity by learning more about my community, networking, develop relationships with my fellow ambassadors and create a greater awareness of what our fantastic region known as “The Barossa” has to offer. Name: Daniel Kavanagh | Age 20, Gawler East. Occupation: Food and beverage attendant at the Jacobs Creek Visitors Centre The reason I joined the Ambassador programme was to gain more knowledge and skills that would help me within the Barossa Valley. I was eager to learn more about our history and what goes on behind the scenes. I would also like to see the rich culture and history that the Barossa prides itself on, to never fade. I think its important for tourists to not only look at the Barossa for its wine industry but for its story as well. I think that it is our history, our sense of community and our rich culture that sets us apart. I guess what I hope to achieve is making others aware of this.
Name: Penelope De Ruiter | Age 19, Barossa Valley. Occupation: I work for my mum at her shop, Red Door Espresso in Tanunda. I grew up in WA until I was five and then my family moved to the Barossa. I have just started TAFE doing an Advanced Diploma of Graphic Design. What I hope to achieve out of the young ambassadors is to gain skills in marketing, good communication and a better understanding about the Barossa. These skills will stay with me through the rest of my working life and it’s also a great opportunity to meet new people and make some great friends.
Name: Sharni Lee Hausler | Age 20, Barossa born. Occupation: Trainee Information Officer at the Barossa Visitor Centre. As a young Ambassador I wish to widely promote the Barossa interstate and also internationally.

Name: Rebecca Murphy | Age 25, Tanunda. Occupation: Events Executive Novotel Barossa Valley Resort. As a Young Ambassador, I hope to achieve a better appreciation of the Barossa Valley and a greater understanding of our history and heritage. I would also like to become a more active member of the community and to ensure that the Barossa Valley remains a must visit destination for tourists, showcasing all we have to offer with food, wine and tourism.

Name: Emily Neldner | Age 22, Nuriootpa. Occupation: Retail Manager at Barossa Valley Cheese Company. Hopeful to achieve: To bring the young people of the Barossa a new connection to the Vintage Festival. Our event, Friday Night Live - is aimed at young-youngish people. For this event to work well will be a huge promise to the future young ambassadors and for the people that attend! This programme has taught us a lot already about the Barossa, perhaps things we should have known, but to work in such a large group of young people, I hope we achieve enough for the community to understand our hard work.
Name: Kimberly Abraham | Age 23, Nuriootpa. Occupation: Packaging Technician Wolf Blass. As a young ambassador I hope to experience and learn things about the Barossa that the average person would not know so I can then educate others on the Beautiful region that we are so lucky to live in.

Presenting two formal evening concerts, and two daytime recitals, guests are
A Neon Dry Club The members of the YAC Barossa decided to plan a “youth friendly event for one of the biggest festivals of the Barossa Valley, the Vintage Festival. After a number of discussions between members of the Committee there was a strong commitment to provide a fun night for young people to celebrate the Vintage Festival that did not revolve around alcohol. YAC Barossa recognises the importance of the wine industry in the Barossa Valley and the Vintage Festival itself, but felt that there was nothing provided to the 13 – 24 demographic that wished to attend a dry (non-alcohol) event. The Neon ‘Dry’ Club will be held on April
6 following on from the Vintage Festival parade. Doors will open at 6pm and to ensure a space free from alcohol and the safety of all participants the club will be a lock-in event, no pass outs will be given (lock-in from 6.30 – 10pm). A purchased ticket will include entry to the night club, pizza and a glow stick. The theme of the night is NEON which will include black lights on the night. The night will include beats from local DJ’s, a Neon Painting Booth for body art, Mocktails and drinks to purchase, along with prizes for best Neon dressed and a lucky door prize. Come along for a great night.
offered a choice of sumptuous lunch, high tea, pre-concert fine dining, along with CanapĂŠs and wine which are inclusive with the evening functions. “These concerts will be an intimate exchange of the great classics between the audience and wonderful musicians, surrounded in the most beautiful setting of the Barossa Chateau. A feast for the senses,â€? Niki Vasilakis said. Barossa Chateau and its magnificent rose garden were opened by HM Queen Elizabeth in 2002. A boutique winery cellar door,
expansive Barrel room, and of course the grand formal hall filled with precious art and antiques, offer a breathtaking scene not unlike the salons and galleries of Europe. Mark and Mandy are enthusiastic about increasing the artistic profile of the venue, a unique space which provides a stunning backdrop for an intimate soirÊe with a series of Classical concerts. With Niki’s musical direction, the long term goal is to further develop and cultivate ongoing world class classical music programmes.

The excitement is official - Barossa Coffee Roasters, Scullery Made Tea and friends are teaming up again to ‘pop’ breakfast in to Sunday morning, just in time to wrap up the festivities of vintage on April 7. The Breakfast Rave is a spontaneous community event, popping up in various iconic Barossa Valley locations. As part of this year’s Vintage Festival programme, the next venue for The Breakfast Rave will only be announced a couple of weeks prior to the event. With a notion to provide a great place to hang out on a milk crate and nibble away on locally sourced produce, The Breakfast Rave team have managed to create a 100% compostable event; even the knives and forks can be eaten by worms after the fact. Hand screened t-shirts, hessian signage and bunting made from old coffee sacks add to the hands-on
aspect of the morning, but it’s the give away veggie seedlings that really show the nature of the event. A collection of plants, potted up in spent tea leaves and coffee grounds, are offered to make their way home with anyone who wants to help ‘grow the next Rave’. Care and attention to detail is apparent in every edible, brew-able, compostable aspect of what appears on offer in the morning. There’s no ‘quick, duck down the shops’ for what makes it onto the trestle, oh no. It’s more ‘has anyone fed the sourdough starter’ and ‘this cold drip will be done in another eight hours’ or ‘best be off to pick mulberries and collect eggs’... Handmade and from the heart is how things roll at The Breakfast Rave. Fairtrade, organic and sustainable brekky with live music, kicking off at 8 a.m. and disappearing at midday.
