Get the garden ready for autumn Autumn is the perfect time for planting because the garden is still warm and plants can establish before winter comes. Owner of Barossa Nursery at Tanunda, Mrs Erica Bartsch said this is the best time for flower carpet pink splash. “Plants and flowers grow fabulously this time of the year, including cyclamens, gauras, dianthus, salvias, fuchsias, calibrachoas and plumbagos,” Erica said. She said autumn was the time t o p l a n t p a n s i e s, s n a p d r a g o n s,
calendulas and primula. Erica said autumn is the main bulb planting season and the most popular choices were daffodils, tulips, ranunculus and freesia. “Other interesting ones are ixias, leucocoryne ixioides, fritillaria and baby gladioli.” She said now is a good time to select deciduous trees because they are moving into their colour. “Fruit trees can be planted from now on and it is a good time for fertilising. “Fruiting and flowering plants
benefit from a dose of potash in autumn.” Erica said the trend in gardening is changing from minimalistic to a more colourful garden. She said vegetable seedlings can be planted now, including cabbage, broccoli, brussels sprouts, spinach and silver beet. “In seeds, you can plant carrots, turnips, sweedes and parsnips.” Herbs can also be planted this time of year. Erica’s tip for autumn is to get out the snail bait if the rain comes.

Autumn Gutters – install guards to help keep them clean Gutter guards can be defined as rolls of special material such as a mesh that are fitted into your existing gutters. They are of great benefit to your home for a number of reasons: • They stop leaves and other debris from clogging up your gutters so that you don’t have to spend your precious time cleaning out the blockages or spend money on getting professionals out to do it for you. • Gutters only have to be cleaned every three to five years, instead of twice a year. • Gutter guards stop your gutters from prematurely rusting due to moisture laden debris just sitting in them. This means that your gutters will last at least twice as long as they otherwise would. • Gutter guards also stop the blockages when your gutters overflow during times of heavy rain. This overflowing is dangerous as it can cause water to enter your home and cause damage or cause damage to your foundations. Overflowing gutters can also cause unsightly staining on the outside of your home. • Gutter guards can improve the flow of water through the gutters and downpipes as they stop them from blocking up. This is excellent if you have a rainwater tank as it means that your tank will refill more quickly when it rains. The water will also be cleaner as the gutter guard filters out debris and contaminants. • They can also stop insects and vermin such as mosquitoes, mice, cockroaches and spiders from breeding in the gutters. Gutter guards greatly reduce the amount of stagnant water that just sits in the gutter and, because there is little or no stagnant water, it becomes much more difficult and unattractive for nasties to use the gutters as their breeding ground. Gutter guards are also a physical barrier to rodents, birds and possums that can otherwise find their way into your roof space. • Gutter guards are also excellent protection in bushfire prone areas, especially if yuo get metal gutter guards that are specifically rated for fire protection. Embers can travel a long way during a fire and if they get into dry material in the gutters, the material can ignite and the fire can spread quickly. Installing gutter guard means that there is no material to potentially catch alight.
When should I clean my gutters?
Cleaning the gutters is one of those jobs that you either never think about or that you try to put off doing because it can be such an unpleasant chore. However, if you don’t clean your

gutters on a regular basis, you are risking damage not only to your roof structure but your home itself. But how often do you need to actually clean your gutters or have them cleaned? Here’s what you need to know...

Why do I need to clean my gutters?
3 seater & 2 reclining chairs
Cleaning your gutters is important for a variety of reasons. Having them cleaned out regularly means: • Your gutters will have a much longer lifespan (even double the life). • Less chance of water entering the home due to overflow. • Much less chance of debris blocking the downpipes or stormwater drains. • There is no environment in which mosquitoes, cockroaches, mice, spiders, and other insects and vermin can breed. • Clean gutters means that there is less fuel around during fire season (protecting your home).

How often should my gutters be cleaned?
BENSON
How often your gutters need to be cleaned depends primarily on how many large trees you have overhanging your home, as the primary cause of blocked and dirty gutters is leaf debris. If you have several trees overhanging your home, your gutters may need to be cleaned three or four times a year. If you don’t have many trees at all, twice a year or even once a year is sufficient. However, it is recommended that your gutters are cleaned yearly at an absolute minimum. Of course, the best time is right after your trees have finished shedding. If you have gutter guards installed, you might only have to clean your gutters once every two or three years.

Who should clean my gutters?
You can easily clean your gutters yourself with a few tools such as a pair of gloves, a ladder and some time. Cleaning gutters yourself though, while saving you money, is a time consuming process and it can be unsafe if you don’t follow proper safety procedures. If you don’t want to do the job yourself, you can organise to have a professional clean your gutters. This is great as they have all of the equipment required to do the job safely, efficiently and thoroughly. The professionals will dispose of the waste if needed, or they will neatly pile the waste in your garden so that you can use it as mulch or for your compost. The professional can also install gutter protection such as gutter guards so that you don’t have to have your gutters cleaned as often in the future.

Autumn Home Ideas 2011 Derelict building to charming home
Schlienke’s Gully is depicted on this stained glass window.
Not only have Neil and Di Trenberth from Bethany had their lovely garden featured in the Open Garden Scheme, they also live in a charming house that they have made into an intimate home. The original building was a 1890s two-bedroom stone cottage, which is now a guest room for the lucky friends invited to stay at the house. The original extension of the home, known as the Kolhagen House, was done by Nathalie Leader and locals thought she was crazy for attempting to transform what was being used as a hay store into a home. “She brought it back to life; this was derelict,” Mrs Trenberth said. Mr and Mrs Trenberth, who purchased the home in 1992, agree their favourite part of the house is an outdoor room they like to call their conservatory. They describe the room as being more English than Australian with its delicate high-tea atmosphere and said they always wanted a conservatory. Mr Trenberth said he enjoys
having breakfast in the room, and maybe nodding off for a nanna nap in the afternoon. The home is completely influenced by the couple, with the decorations being sentimental to them. “We’re particularly fond of England so we try to recreate it a bit,” Mrs Trenberth said. A small basin and dish on the guest room’s bedside table is what Mrs Trenberth’s grandmother used to bathe Mrs Trenberth in. Mrs Trenberth said she was particularly fond of the stained glass window in the same room depicting Schlienke’s Gully. The art work on the walls was painted and drawn by Mr Trenberth, an art teacher, and his students. The couple have done a lot of renovations to the house, but have transformed the garden even more dramatically by creating separate “rooms” by adding shrubs and stone walls. Mr and Mrs Trenberth said they bought the house because it had a lot of open space surrounding it, while still being in a reasonably built-up area with bitumen roads.

Autumn Home Ideas 2011 Kitchens are star of the show Kitchens have stepped into the media spotlight in the past 12 months with shows such as MasterChef driving the trend towards gourmet cooking in the home. Such is the passion of home cooks to replicate dishes seen on television and in restaurants that demand for new generation appliances that more closely replicate the performance and professional results of their commercial counterparts is surging. Appliance brands have taken homeowners into the realm of custom designed kitchens, whereby consumers can personalise their range of cooking appliances to reflect individual culinary preferences. A homeowner who loves to entertain and has a preference for healthy food for example, might select a dedicated steam oven, together with a multifunction oven (with supercook, fanforced, classic convection, rotisserie, grill and baker’s functions). A combination microwave/ multifunction oven delivers a second oven option when catering for larger numbers while offering everyday re-heating and defrosting options. Induction cooktops meanwhile, are a relatively new and growing trend with sales increasing over the past 12 months
by 42 per cent. Consumers, and chefs alike, are big fans of the numerous benefits induction delivers, such as faster, more energy efficient cooking; cooler kitchens (only the actual cooking vessel is heated, not the cooktop); and superior temperature range and control – chocolate, for example, can be gently melted without the need of a double boiler while the cooktop’s extremely high, intense temperatures are perfect for stir frying.
Wi t h r e c e n t m a g a z i n e and newspaper articles showing celebrity chefs such as Matt Moran and Peter Evans in their home kitchens with domestic appliances home cooks are feeling increasingly confident they can indeed replicate the professional cooking results they see on television and in restaurants. Other key trends in the world of kitchen appliances are easy clean options plus ergonomic design.

Autumn Home Ideas 2011 Jazzing up the living room The living room is a much utilised room that could do with jazzing up each season and autumn is the perfect time to update the feel of the space. Furniture and Bedding Team Leader at the Co-op, Nuriootpa, Mrs Sharon Bawden said lots of shades of green are popular this season. “Green is popular coming into autumn and there is a lot wider variety than normal,” Mrs Bawden said. Texture is a big trend this season and Mrs Bawden said cushions are a great way to inject the latest style into your living room. “We get a massive range of cushions in and they go really quickly.” Mrs Bawden said it was the smaller details you should pay attention to if you want to give your living room a quick lift. “The quickest and easiest way to make over your living room is to update your lamps, cushions and throws. “Lamps will give the room a nice, soft light as it begins to get darker outside.” She said a neutral living room was the perfect canvas for adding colourful extras of different styles each season. “If you keep your living room to two to three shades of colour then you can bring in accessories and change them more often.” Mrs Bawden said metal work, canvasses and screens are all really popular to give a living room a bit of character. “To make it more homely and cosy, bring in some throw rugs.”
Sharon Bawden, Barossa Community Store’s furniture and bedding team leader, says green is a popular colour this season.

Autumn Home Ideas 2011 Select the right windows and glass for your home Windows are a fundamental and uniquely powerful design element of a home. More than any other component, windows set the tone of your home by providing views, ventilation, daylight and a sense of spaciousness. Managing director of Rogasch Windows at Tanunda, Mr Craig Rogasch said windows also have a critical role in a home’s comfort and energy consumption. “As we are all aware, temperature is central to comfort and it is hard for us to feel truly comfortable when we are too hot or too cold, Mr Rogasch said. Mr Rogasch said poorly designed windows can act as an energy leak in an otherwise
well insulated home. A typically well insulated building with ordinary clear single glazing loses up to 49 per cent of heat through windows in winter. The same windows allow up to 87 per cent of solar heat gain during summer. “The use of Performance Glass can vastly improve these figures by maximising the use of natural solar energy that enters your home as light and heat when it is desirable, but limiting it at times and in areas when it is not. “It reduces your dependency on artificial lighting by allowing more natural light into your home when it is required and reduces the amount of artificial heating energy
that escapes to the atmosphere, while maintaining cooler temperatures for longer by reducing unwanted heat entering your home. Single glazed Low E coated glass has a microscopically thin, yet durable coating that controls the flow of heat into and out of your windows. Double glazing or Insulated Glass Units (IGU) introduces a second layer of glass to create a static “air gap. This gap forms a transparent insulating barrier between the interior of your home and the outdoors. Mr Rogasch said the two main figures to look at when selecting a window and glass type are the U-Value
and Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC). The U-Value is the rate of heat transfer from the inside to outside through the window. The lower the U-Value figure, the more effective the insulation and the lower the heat transfer means more comfort and less energy required to heat your home. The Solar Heat Gain Coefficient is the measure of heat transferred (direct radiation) into the house. The lower the SHGC, the lower the rate of heat gain through your window.

It is well known that double glazing is superior for the energy efficiency that it provides but what if there was a way to make it even more energy efficient? This may just in fact be possible by using protective coatings.

Autumn Home Ideas 2011 Expansion and launch of new showroom at Mark Kroepsch Constructions When Mr Mark Kroepsch began his construction business five years ago, he built the idea around a motto, ‘quality, service and a fair price.’ With the help of his wife, Sharon, their business has grown and as of Christmas, a new showroom and display centre are operating from 9A Magnolia Road, Tanunda. The employee number has also grown with Jay Helyar, Daniel Marschall and Dylan Abinett now working alongside Mr Kroepsch on site. The expansion allows the business to operate independently offering a ‘one stop shop’ service to customers. “We provide the product, council application, site preparation, installation and concreting all in the one business.”
As the company now controls all aspects of their construction business, they can ensure competitive prices, reliability, and jobs are completed efficiently. “It is more convenient for customers because it can all be done in one place and they don’t have to find quotes through different tradespeople,” said Mr Kroepsch. The new location is very accessible and offers a spacious parking area. The expansion of the business allows the company to offer the construction of sheds, verandahs, carports, concreting and pergolas, while working with their suppliers Fielders. The recently constructed display office gives customers a place to enquire about available products in a customer friendly atmosphere.
Mr Kroepsch is hoping to have the Centenary Carport and Verandah displays ready in the next three to six months, which will allow customers to view different displays seven days a week. The business uses computer generated designs through Metromax Shed Designs, which allows sheds to be made to multiple size and shapes. They also offer floor coatings to new or existing sheds, carports and garages. Autumn Home Ideas 2011 Cleaning up the autumn leaves When autumn comes, the leaves start falling and it’s time to clean up the crunchy golden-orange mounds outside the home. Angaston resident, Mr Peter Twelftree has to get the leaf blower out about once a week to clean up his yard. Mr Twelftree’s cleaner of choice is an electric blower, but he uses one with a twostroke motor when he works as a groundskeeper at the Nuriootpa Caravan Park. “At home, an electrical cord
is enough and you don’t have to worry about finding an empty petrol can.” His main tip for leaf blowing was to keep the blower moving once you get it started. Mr Twelftree’s other tip was to try to convince your wife to do it for you. “I don’t like doing it that much, but it’s easier than a broom or a rake.” Mr Twelftree said he not only keeps the garden tidy with leaf blowing, he also takes pride in the rest of his garden.

Decorate your outdoor room with
Maximise your living space The living room has undergone a few changes over the years. In our grandparents’ day it was the front parlour – an often forbidding place where photographs of long-dead relatives stared sternly down from the mantelpiece. It was rarely used except for visitors and formal occasions. Many people still think of it as the lounge, with dad dozing in the depths of his favourite armchair, but today the living room tends to be the hub of the home, the venue for numerous family activities. As such it should be both comfortable and functional. If your home is still in the lounge, or even the front parlour era, it’s worth considering structural improvements that maximise the useable space. This can be as ambitious as knocking out internal walls to combine separate rooms into one large open-plan living zone, or as simple as adding a large mirror to give the appearance of extra space. A living room can be expanded with the addition of a patio or deck, reached through French windows or bi-fold doors. It may even be extended vertically by raising the ceiling to expose rafters and adding a mezzanine. If you have a large open-plan area, it is a good idea to choose light, versatile furniture which can be moved around easily to suit whatever function the room is needed for at that moment. For everyday life, ‘zones’ can be formed with the addition of screens or folding partitions, creating rooms within rooms where a variety of activities can be conducted independently of each other. Living rooms are often called into service when an influx of house guests puts pressure on sleeping arrangements. A good quality sofa bed beats camping on the floor, while storage chests containing emergency bedding can double as tables or seating. Finally, a clever colour scheme can give the illusion of space. Use lighter colours generally,

although a dark shade on the back wall will make the room look wider. Vertical patterns on walls or furnishings make the ceiling seem higher; with horizontal patterns it will appear lower, but the room will seem wider. Colour can also make up for a lack of natural light, especially when combined with reflective surfaces and smart artificial lighting. An interior designer or renovator will be happy to help with your living room upgrade.

Autumn Home Ideas 2011 Creating an oasis of peaceful privacy We have a proliferation of names to describe the rooms of our homes: living rooms, kitchens and bedrooms are everpresent of course, but how many of us can boast parlours or sewing rooms or conservatories these days? Of course names go in and out of fashion and some rooms such as the library, indispensable in the grand houses of Victorian times, have had to make way or at least serve dual purposes, through lack of space. One room, common in the United States but rarely seen here, is the den. We have games rooms and rumpus rooms and perhaps the ‘parents retreat’ comes close, but the idea of a comfortable adult space, set away from the home’s other activities, where privacy, quiet and relaxation are the main activities, does not seem to have caught on here. People often say they would like the idea if they had a spare room available, but just because a particular room has been designated for one activity, does not mean it can’t also be utilised for another.
Visit the experts at Nick Hambour Window Fashions and save
Note the areas that have less activity on a daily basis – they could be the dining room, a guest bedroom or maybe even the living room if it is used only for occasional entertaining. If it’s a guest bedroom, consider replacing the bed with a comfortable sofa bed or even a pull-down wall bed. You can then think about furnishings. You don’t have to conform to the popular idea of a den as a dark room, filled with books, trophies and other memorabilia. It may be you like plenty of light, low coffee tables and bean bags. This is your space, indulge yourself. Aim for peace and quiet. That may not be entirely possible without costly soundproofing, but sound-absorbing fabrics, coupled by a pleasant whitenoise maker such as an electric fan, can at least give the feeling of seclusion from the rest of the house. Finally, use lighting to create the mood. Go for table and floor-standing lamps which are aesthetically pleasing as well as useful for providing illumination only where it is needed.

Australians take the soft option Australian kitchen renovations have traditionally sought to emulate their European counterparts by sporting sleek, ceramic tiled floors – but this appears to have changed in recent times, with cushioned vinyl now a contender in the flooring stakes. Independent research reveals the popularity of vinyl for kitchen floors has increased. The Australian Resilient Flooring Association (ARFA), representing all industry manufacturers and distributors, believes the reason for the shift to vinyl floor covering is the product’s ability to faithfully replicate almost any natural finish without the associated drawbacks of that medium. The warm, natural look of timber; the sleek, clean effect of marble; and the character and detail of ceramic tiles are all now skillfully copied in vinyl to the point where visually it’s hard to pick the original from the fake. Cushioned vinyl designs vary from warm parquetries and cool ceramics to subtle multidirectionals in understated tones and vibrant hues that can be cut and inlaid to the home owner’s
custom-designed pattern. Unlike ceramics or slate, vinyl is soft and warm underfoot in winter but comfortably cool in summer. Unlike timber, vinyl is relatively inexpensive to lay and can even be laid by the home handyman. And unlike carpet, vinyl is easy to keep clean and does not harbour the allergies and dust mites that have been proven to be the main causes of asthma. Maintenance is another advantage of the vinyl option – spills and stains can simply be mopped up with a damp cloth and there is no need for any polishes or sealers – the product will retain its original appearance for many years of normal household traffic. For the home handyperson, cushioned vinyl is heaven-sent – it can be laid on any subfloor; it doesn’t break, crack or need grouting, nor does it require sanding, nailing or varnishing. For heavy traffic areas such as kitchens, cushioned vinyl has even more advantages – unlike marble and more porous finishes it will not stain easily and due to its softness the risk of breakages is greatly reduced.
