2011 Tour Down Under Message from the Minister
S
outh Australia’s brilliant Barossa is the place to be for ne wine, delicious food, the arts, sport and exceptional events including the Santos Tour Down Under.
Sign up for community ride
C
ycling enthusiasts will ride en-masse from Tanunda to Angaston for Stage 1 of the 2011 Santos Tour Down Under on January 18. Registrations are now open for ‘Barossa by Bike’, a community bike ride along the Barossa Trail via Nuriootpa.
Indeed, the Barossa has been synonymous with the Santos Tour Down Under since this brilliant event began. As the event has gone from strength to strength, the region has risen to the occasion. At the heart of the Barossa’s Santos Tour Down Under celebrations is the community, and the 2011 event will be no exception. From traditional Aussie barbecues to community bike rides, scooter races and family activities in the town squares and village greens, there is no better way to welcome the Tour. This year’s ‘Barossa by Bike’ theme represents another excellent opportunity to showcase the best of the Barossa to an international audience. The combination of mild weather, picturesque landscape, cycling networks and plenty of places to wine and dine make the Barossa a perfect destination for cycling enthusiasts of all ages and abilities – right on the doorstep of Adelaide.
Cyclists can participate for just $5 which includes refreshments, with proceeds supporting Cancer Council SA. An initiative of Tourism Barossa and The Barossa Council, the family-friendly ride will be an exciting build-up to the community celebration in Angaston’s main street later that day.
State Tourism Minister John Rau.
The 2010 Santos Tour Down Under attracted a record crowd of 770,500 people, including many interstate and international visitors. The return of Tour de France legend Lance Armstrong in 2011 for his last professional race on international soil promises to be a huge drawcard for the event and the sport of cycling in general. I look forward to joining the community and visitors in the Barossa on January 18 to sample the region’s hospitality as the community “turns it on” for the 2011 Santos Tour Down Under, and hope to see you there.
Riders can start at either Tanunda or Nuriootpa and make their way safely to Angaston on the off-road cycling path. Tourism Barossa manager Jaci Thorne said it will be great chance for people to discover the new AngastonNuriootpa Rail Trail. “And riders will be able to pass under the arch in Angaston just hours before their cycling heroes cross the line in a thrilling nish,” she said.
Paige Noble (left) and Jaci Thorne enjoy the new Angaston-Nuriootpa Rail Trail ahead of the Tour Down Under community bike ride.
Entry forms are available at Barossa Visitor Centre in Tanunda, Barossa Council ofces or online at barossa.com People can register until the week before the race, although numbers are limited. For information or registration details visit www.barossa.com

More bike path to cycle THE Tanunda-Nuriootpa cycle path has been extended to create safe and accessible linkages to neighbouring towns. JOINTLY funded by The Barossa Council and SA Tourism Commission, the path has been extended 240 metres north. TASMANIAN visitor and avid cyclist Sue Denman (pictured with Council’s Director Works and Engineering Bim Lange) described the $40,000 upgrade as “fantastic” and said it was a smooth and enjoyable ride for cyclists of all ages and abilities. THE upgraded path provides a link to the AngastonNuriootpa Rail Trail and Nuriootpa’s linear path via a dedicated bicycle lane on the Railway Terrace roundabout, which is currently under construction.

Gearing up for the ‘Lance’ factor
L
ance Armstrong mania will hit South Australia as the Santos Tour Down Under rolls into the Barossa for the opening leg of the race.
The sporting superstar is expected to be a huge drawcard when he returns for his last professional race on international soil. Armstrong launched his comeback to professional cycling at the 2009 Santos Tour Down Under, and returned in 2010 to debut his new team, Team RadioShack.
He said South Australia had been a happy hunting ground for him. “I’m excited to be competing in my last professional ride outside the US at the Santos Tour Down Under,” he said. “It will be my third time to the event, and I’m sure I will enjoy it as much as I have the rst two times. “I will never forget the reception we received when we kicked off the Livestrong global campaign.”
Local traders are expected to cash in on the “Armstrong factor”, with Angaston eateries preparing to serve thousands of locals and tourists. Angaston Roaring 40’s Café function manager Lana Edwards said the build-up was “extremely exciting”. “It’s going to be fantastic – it’s our biggest day of the year with all hands on deck,” she said. Premier Mike Rann said Armstrong was ‘guaranteed’ to boost crowd numbers.

Our cycle-friendly region The 7km shared use path is part of the Barossa Trail cycling network, and is wider than traditional paths so cyclists and pedestrians can pass safely. Additional features include public art, interpretive signage, seating and delightful sculptured echidnas which mark every kilometre of the track. Shelters and bike racks are also planned. Barossa mayor Brian Hurn, who ofcially opened the path in November, said the former railway line has been transformed into a vibrant public space. “The trail encourages people to explore our region by bike or by foot, appreciate the stunning natural environment and learn more about our rich history,” he said.
“
“It also provides important links to other well-known attractions such as Tolley Reserve, Nuriootpa’s Linear Park, Barossa Bushgardens, Menglers Hill Sculpture Park and Barossa Farmers Market. “It’s not only walkers and riders beneting from this track, but also people on gophers, parents with prams, senior members of our community and young children, which shows the trail truly is accessible for all members of our community.” The track was laid using 1000 tonnes of hotmix poured over the existing track once the sleepers were removed. The Barossa Council was able to make signicant savings by using the existing stone ballast from the track, which avoided the need to transport rubble to the site and helped reduce the carbon footprint of the project. For information visit www.barossa.sa.gov.au and search for ‘Bike Path’.
