This week “The Leader” is thrilled to launch its new concept, “A Man’s World.” After receiving generous demand for a product of this nature, we are pleased to deliver this fresh new section which is specifically designed for all our male readers. “A Man’s World” will be a great addition to our already strong list of on-going special sections. It is hoped readers will find it equally exciting. We believe this lift-out will appeal to a large audience and we are already excited about the next edition, due for release in late winter.

In this edition we look at the latest trends in fashion, how to stay healthy, what men do in their sheds, their hobbies and much more. The role of men is rapidly changing from being the sole bread winner husband or partner. Men today are more involved in child raising, helping in the kitchen yet they still enjoy the outdoors cooking their barbie and their sport. Our staff have enjoyed putting together this exciting new concept and everyone at “The Leader” hope you our readers enjoy it as much as we have enjoyed putting it together for you.

Tattoos have always been a popular form of expression for men that show their interests and personalities, but getting permanent ink is not something that should be taken lightly.

Co-owner of Ink Obsession at Nuriootpa, Lucy Wenham said men should think about the size, placement and visibility of any tattoos they’re thinking about. “They also need to think about the design they get and if they’re going to want to look at it for the rest of their life,” Lucy said. Lucy said tribal design tattoos are popular with men, as well as lettering across backs and chests. “A lot of guys are getting more meaningful tattoos.” She said colours are becoming more popular, with men deciding to show off more than just plain black ink. Lucy, who has been

Stricter ratings for violent video games Video game ratings are set to change if the Government is successful with their push to enforce an R18+ classification to replace MA15+.

Lucy Wenham works on a tattoo for Andre Jablonski which will feature his daughter’s name and date of birth. a tattoo artist for nearly five years, said the strangest tattoo she’s done was a mixture of random shapes. She said she couldn’t reveal the strangest place she had tattooed someone, but some of the most

unusual places were a kneecap and ear. Lucy said one of the most important things about tattoos was keeping them clean and she always recommended people cleanse them with an anti-bacterial wash.

Classifications will go from M to R18+, cutting out the MA15+, so there is a clear line between what is appropriate for children and what will only be available to adults. Daniel Pitman of Williamstown is a fan of video games and said the decision should not be made by the Government. “It is up to the parents to decide what games are appropriate for their children to play and I don’t think the ratings change will make a difference.” Daniel said when games are imported from overseas, the ratings are changed and games that are deemed too violent or inappropriate by the Australian Government are not allowed into the country. “Again, I think it is up to the consumer to decide what games they want to play and I don’t think a speed-racing or shooting game affects how people act in real life.” Region codes, which were installed in older model consoles to stop overseas games being played in Australia, have been taken out of new

models so games banned in Australia can still be purchased online. “New consoles such as the PlayStation 3 and Wii do not have region codes installed, so children can get access to banned games over the internet and bring them into Australia anyway. “The rating change is just making it harder for adults to purchase games from their local stores and forcing online purchases instead.” Daniel said games are starting to appear less violent, with new crazes such as the Lego games on Nintendo Wii. “Parents are more likely to go for a Lego based game because it seems less violent and you have to use a lot of strategy in the game. “Game designers put more time into the quest than they spent on the characters and the game is awesome.” Nintendo led the way in modern technology when they brought out the Wii console, controlled by infrared technology. “Wiis are a social gaming system and are great to play over a few drinks with mates. “I would recommend a Wii to any age group and the fact the price hasn’t dropped in about three years show they are a very popular gaming device.”

Have you ever employed the ‘perfect’ person only for them to leave six months later? Be it your decision or the employees the outcome is the same – costly, time consuming and potentially damaging for your business.

what is it about sport that you enjoy?

Effective job descriptions detail the purpose, reporting structure, key relationships, responsibilities and key performance measurements. They are best plainly and concisely written with between 10 and 15 key responsibilities. Anymore they become unwieldy. You can refer to standard operating procedures, handbooks or manual for further explanation. Person specifications can be interwoven or produced as separate documents. These detail the skills and behaviours a person required for the role and the cultural norms of your organisation. Writing a job description or reviewing an existing description provides clarity on what you need a new employee to do, provides a blue print for performance measurement and in stating the goals sets your employees up for success. “People with goals succeed because they know where they are going. It’s as simple as that.” - Earl Nightingale.

In this column I will share with you thoughts and proven strategies on how to attract and retain the most highly skilled, productive and culturally aligned employees for your business. To attract the most appropriate employees you need to be really clear about what it is you want your people to contribute and do and how you want them to behave. Dusting down an old job description without re-evaluating your current business needs is to risk attracting and employing the wrong person. SECRET MEN’S BUSINESS

Flying high

A fascination for anything that flies was behind Mr Brett Alsop’s decision to become a radio controlled model enthusiast. Brett, of Tanunda, first developed his passion in 1988 when Mr Max Newcombe, of Nuriootpa taught him how to fly model aircraft at the Barossa Valley Model Aero Club. Max is currently flying instructor there. Brett started off flying craft using the slope soaring method with two channel gliders on the slope of a hill. He bought a helicopter but initially found that difficult to fly. He explained that at the time there were not many in the club who could fly helicopters. However, just a couple of years ago two and three channel infrared helicopters became available. Brett bought one and went from two channel to three. Then he progressed from a four channel co-axial helicopter with dual rotor blades so that his model can go forwards, backwards, sideways and up and down. He further progressed to a Blade 400 six channel helicopter with collective pitch which is just like a real helicopter in many ways. He explained, “If you are really good you can fly it upside down.” New models again followed with a MSR blade helicopter, which is good

for flying inside or outside. Brett can hover his Blade 400 model but his biggest and most impressive is a 5o size Hirobo Sceadu which he claims is ideal for beginners because it’s more stable on a windy day. This model runs on fuel with 15% nitro. They even have gyros on them to help stabilise them. Those wanting to get into the sport may invest as little as $200 for a little radio transmitter electric model that is ideal for flying indoors. Radio controlled flying has come a long way as Brett explained initially enthusiasts had to assemble their own models from kit form. However, today they are readily available fully assembled. But just like the real ones, occasionally they collide with things like trees and the ground. “I have written a few off years ago, On one of my days I was slope soaring on a hill when the wind dropped and ended up putting my glider in a tree. I then had to climb up the tree to retrieve it. “But, said Brett, “Most helicopters now come with training legs on the undercarriage so there is less chance of a blade strike hitting the ground, giving more area to land on.” He adds, “There is a skill needed in learning how to hover helicopters.” These days Brett goes out nearly every week-end flying his models. “I fly the small one in my driveway,” he remarked.

However the best spot for Brett is at the Tanunda Oval or Rowland Flat Airstrip. Brett says there is a lot of concentration

Check your wife’s drawers first when buying lingerie says Chris While females are more than comfortable buying underwear for their husband or partner the opposite appears to be the case when men go out to buy lingerie for their partner says a qualified expert in the field, Ms Chris Clarke, of Chrissie’s Closet, Tanunda.

Ph: 8563 1300

Chris has kindly offered some timely advice to male shoppers looking to buy that something special for their wife or girlfriend. “It’s a matter of first checking your wife’s drawers really,” suggests Chris. She then adds that men should firstly look in their partner’s lingerie drawer to check out and write down their bra and brief size or dress size. That way they are off to a great start and are more likely to buy a correct fitting garment. She said, “I try to help the gentlemen as much as possible. Quite often they have an idea of what they want but they don’t always know their partner’s correct size which really makes things quite challenging to get it correct. “Often the men I serve just want something lovely for their wife or partner such as a bra and brief set. But then sometimes they will look to buy something to spice up their sex life after seeing something in my window. “Some men find it totally embarrassing when it comes to buying lingerie. I do have my regular male customers who will call in to buy their usual bra and knicker set for their partner. “For instance just last week I had a man call into the shop and he bought a lovely bustier for his partner’s birthday. “Often men will leave their lingerie shopping to the last minute but I remind them that I do gift wrapping.” An important point to consider is whether she’ll actually love the gift, otherwise you could be wasting your money. Aim to invest your cash on something that works with her lifestyle. Just make sure you’re buying something she’ll want to wear over again. Think about her own style. Is she like most other women who spend time on her appearance and selects carefully what she buys and wears? Not all lingerie is the same, so before you buy anything consider her favourite outfits and try to match her style and look.

Ms Chris Clarke, from Chrissie’s Closet holds a Poison Rose chemise, a popular purchase. Always remember you are not buying lingerie for yourself, it’s for her! Lots of lace, a tight corset and brief panties may cater well to the male fantasy but in reality it may not always be the ideal gift for her. It’s wonderful to indulge in the fantasy of sexy lingerie. However, finding something she feels confident in is far more sexier and it may prove far more productive when she comes to show her appreciation of your very special gift.

Nine drinking myths debunked There are any number of crazy facts, figures and stories that come out while we’re drinking that aren’t strictly based on the truth. In fact, most of them are made up — but it’d set you in good stead to have a few of the facts so you look like the smart one next time you’re down at the pub and one of your mates starts mouthing off about this or that... Firstly, drinking in moderation is fine. Drinking excessively is bad — we don’t recommend you get drunk in order to try out any of these — so please drink responsbily.

1 Drinking coffee will sober you up

Wrong! Coffee won’t sober you up because NOTHING can — you simply have to wait for your system to purge itself of alcohol. What a large dose of the black stuff will do is just make you a hyperactive drunk — and probably more annoying than you were before. And you won’t be able to sleep afterwards. The theory is based on opposites — alcohol, the depressant, and coffee, the stimulant, cancelling each other out. Sadly, not true. Nor is the cold shower trick, but you could try it on one of your mates for a laugh.

2 Beer bellies are caused by drinking beer

Another myth that’s filtered down into popular culture. A beer belly is just the moniker given to the visceral (gut) fat build up around the middle of the body and is also referred to as the ‘pot belly’. Scientists aren’t sure why this happens to some people, but sitting around and eating is the general suspicion. And no, standing up and eating won’t make it any better.

3 Drinking destroys your brain cells

How many times did you hear that from your mum, dad or teachers when you were a child? Enough that if you had a dollar for every time you’d be in beer money for a good long while... Interestingly enough, this same myth was perpetuated by the same group who insisted that having alcohol in your blood could result in you catching fire. Thankfully, recent studies have shown that moderate (yes, moderate) consumption of alcohol can improve brain function. Gooooo BEER!

4 Men and women of the same size can drink the same amount of alcohol

We’re all for equality, but sorry girls — you just can’t drink as much as the boys. Women have less alcohol dehydrogenase enzymes, which break down alcohol, in their blood. Thus, ‘drinking like a girl’ is a valid and scientifically based insult. It might be a bit mean and won’t do you any favours with whoever you’re chatting up though.

Hey Dad...

Ok, so you’re going to be a dad, “congratulations” are the first words you hear after you make your big announcement. Then comes the excitement, the preparation and the cramming of information on what to do when your bundle of joy arrives.

In all of this baby hype, does anyone tell you about Postnatal Depression (PND).... it’s time to get some facts out there and although for mums there seems to be some awareness, what about the dads? Adjusting to life as a parent can be a difficult and stressful time. Pregnancy and the birth of a new baby is a hard time for new parents and unfortunately there is no manual as to how you should feel and what you should do. As a new parent you are challenged constantly everyday and have what seems like enormous changes to your daily routine. It can be especially stressful for a new dad, who has to work all day and then come home and cope with a new baby at night. So dad, you feel like you are in a balancing act, trying to get to know your baby through the pregnancy and the birth and when the baby is born you are coping with the sleepless nights, supporting your partner and work. Some dads may feel particularly helpless when they cannot help their partner with feeding a new baby. New dads sometimes think their partners are much better at the baby handling skills such as nappy changing, settling and winding. All of these feelings are normal. Could it just be your partner has more practice at these early baby skills? There are many ways

5 Mixing your drinks

Health experts and doctors all agree that mixing your drinks won’t make you any better or worse than sticking to one drink; nor will avoiding dark drinks in favour of lighter ones. The solution to not getting ill when drinking or the morning after — don’t drink to excess in the first place.

6 The custom of clinking glasses when saying cheers was to avoid poisoning

In truth, nobody knows where the custom of clinking glasses together comes from, despite all the myths surrounding it. One idea was that to make sure your ally/partner/new acquaintance hadn’t drugged your drink you would bang your glasses together, slopping some of your drink into his or hers. Another was that the loud ‘clink’ would serve to ward off evil spirits. The custom is far more recent than the days of scaring demons and poisoning by drink (although there was never a time when this was particularly prevalent) and some experts believe it merely became popular because of the pleasant noise it makes.

7 alcohol makes you a better lover

8

Taking aspirin before drinking will stop you getting a hangover

You’re probably getting the message by now — there are no hard and fast preventions or cures for hangovers. Rumours have circulated about medical students putting themselves on drips overnight to rehydrate and cleanse, but no evidence exists. Just don’t try it at home with a can of lemonade. The myth about aspirin couldn’t be further from the truth — it actually slows the rate at which your body breaks down alcohol, prolonging both the effects of being drunk and getting over it. And don’t forget, the effects of an aspirin only last a few hours, not all night.

9 You can beat a breathalyser test

You don’t need to be told what a bad idea going anywhere near a car is when you’ve been drinking — even as a passenger, whom recent studies have shown are highly likely to cause accidents when intoxicated. But whatever anyone tells you, you can’t beat a breathalyser. If you’ve been that idiotic to get into a car and you’ve been stopped by the police, hold your hands up. Myths about sucking coins, sweets — even eating your underpants as one American driver tried — won’t cut it. You cannot beat a breathalyser.

Well, it certainly makes you think you’re one. It actually just has a major effect on your inhibitions, making you feel more confident and more comfortable — and prepared to go the extra mile. You’ll be running round the pub chatting up girls in no time, which you’d probably never do The First when sober. Alcohol can have 12 Months major side effects on your, ahem, (EPDS Depression Scale)1 performance in other areas though, Both mums and dads can get depression or anxiety during pregnancy and following birth. slowing down the communications Below is a set of questions which can tell you whether you have symptoms that are common with across your synapses depression and anxiety during pregnancy and in the year following birth. and making you less This is not intended to provide a diagnosis – only trained health professionals should do this. able to control your physical actions. that dads can feel useful and help build a relationship with the new baby: help out with bathing, changing, cuddling them, even try some simple activities like reading to them. The important thing is to get involved and keep talking to your partner. With all this said, in the time of pregnancy and in the first 12 months after having a child, dads CAN get depression or anxiety, in just the same way that it can happen for women. One of the biggest problems for men when talking about post natal depression is lack of support. There seems to be numerous support groups for women and practically nowhere for depressed dads to turn. Another fundamental problem is that dads tend to think that they have to be the strong ones, to support the new mum and are often reluctant to express their feelings. If you are a new dad, there are some signs that you need to be aware of: if you are feeling overwhelmed, depressed or anxious, if you feel isolated, if you are experiencing mood swings and you feel you lack social/emotional support. As with any kind of mental health issue, do not ignore the signs, talk to your partner, a friend or relative and seek professional help through contact with your GP. For new dads (and mums) who are expecting or have a new baby, try out the checklist below to see “how are you travelling?” The Barossa GP Network provides continuous education to GPs and their practice team on many aspects of mental health. If you have any concerns, speak to your GP who will support you through this period and provide you with information and resources.

Maintaining the look

When it comes to men’s hair Adele has one piece of simple advice -“Maintain your hairstyle.”

Mrs Adele Kempster, proprietor of Naturally Red Hair and Beauty in Angaston says men should call into their hairdresser around every four weeks to maintain a good hair cut and combine this by using a good styling product at home. While ladies are known for their beautiful hair after leaving their salon, Adele reminds us that in some cases these very ladies may spend absoluteley hours at the salon. While ladies will enjoy a tea or coffee at their hair salon, men it seems, don’t. They just want a quick tidy up for their hair and then go. Often men may spend as little as a half an hour for their visit to the hairdresser. She says it is quite common too that men will just call in to the salon with no appointment. Sometimes this fills a gap in her salon’s working day which works out quite well. However, often these are the men who like to be in, get their hair cut and get straight out. “Guys” says Adele, can be low maintenance with their hair and others are quite pedantic. “They do like to read “The Leader” while they are waiting.”

She adds, “Sometimes they ask for shampoo and a scalp massage with conditioner. “Some guys have colours and occasionally primary school boys will ask to have foils added to their hair styling. “Often for the older men we do beard trimming and eyebrow trims. “One of my girls even did a mohawk haircut for a guy. And for one young primary school boy another hairdresser shaved the side of the boy’s hair in the shape of lightning bolts. “I think the more outlandish styles appear in the city,” she laughed. With a rapidly decling number of the traditional male barber shops remaining in Australia it seems the young guys don’t seem to be as intimidated as the older guys in going to see hairdressers like Adele and her team of ladies. Guys, she says will vary in age, with the average from young boys to 30 and 40 year old men. Then there is regular customer, 90 year old Mr Colin Bagner, from Angaston. Male tourists always make for good conversation in the salon and in the last couple of months just gone by during vintage, Adele and her staff found them great to talk to, especially those from overseas, learning what they have done while they have been in Australia.

IN STYLE

Fashions of the past make a comeback

Men’s fashions of the past are making a comeback, with styles moving towards a more refined look. Menswear manager at the Co-op, Nuriootpa, Mr Paul Schupelius said the 1960s are making a revival with clothing becoming more fitted and men opting to dress up, rather than dress down. Detail is top of the fashion list, with men wanting their jackets, trousers, shirts and shoes to have a unique element. “People want to stand out, they don’t want to look the same as everyone else,” Mr Schupelius said. In the spirit of looking unique, men are beginning to wear contrasting shirts and ties to stand out from the crowd. Mr Schupelius said slim ties have made a big resurgence and men are also looking for ties with bold colours and stripes. He said Ben Sherman was one of the most popular brands with their 60s style clothing and preppy T-shirt look, with shirts ranging from classic to “out there”.

Another strong trend this season is layering with the many jackets, T-shirts and fine-gauge knits available. Denim jeans with slim or straight legs are popular in toned down colours like grey, dark blue, black and charcoal. Men are increasingly wearing jackets with pocket detail and trim. Pleather (fake leather) jackets are also a hot item at the moment, with the quality of the material improving compared with a few years ago. Mr Schupelius said men are dressing younger than they ever have, with the sleek, stylish look popular with men of all ages. “Sixty is the new 40 and older men are dressing more stylishly.” Pointy toe dress shoes and boots are the latest footwear, and belts are always an important accessory. “You could be the best dressed guy in the room, but if you don’t have a belt you’ll looked underdressed.”

Off the couch A change in character for “Demolition” Dave

The spontaneous adrenalin-seeker says he is enjoying life and getting closer to a work/life balance each day. Despite taking more risks in life than most people, Dave still describes himself as a quiet and shy person but said he has found himself

coming out of his shell and becoming more involved in his own life over the past few years. He said all of the extreme activities he does is great bonding time with his four sons, while he bonds with his two daughters when they help him use the computer. One of the most recent adventures Dave, who turns 52 today, has had is applying for The Amazing Race four times but did not make the cut. “I don’t know what the producers were thinking by not picking us,” Dave said.

“Demolition Dave” Marschall and his pride and joy, a Harley Davidson he likes to say was purchased with six tonne of Shiraz.

Dave’s launched into the world of action and adventure 11 years ago when one of his sons wanted to do Taekwondo so Dave started to do weights and became fitter for the martial art. He was then encouraged by his mates (including Michael Fechner, who Dave trained with) to try out for Wipeout and went to Sydney to audition for the adventure game show, where he lined up to practice at 4.30 a.m. “In the audition I just had a go and yelled, screamed and went crazy,” Dave said. The producers told Dave they would call him but the proactive thrill-seeker called them first and eventually won a spot on the show and $20,000 for outlasting the other contestants. “Demolition” Dave’s nickname comes from his line of work as a house demolisher and he said he has always been fit for work but took it to the next level after becoming involved in his adventures. Fitness and fun are what Dave has aspired to, saying he always wanted to be like Arnold Schwarzenegger and star in movies. “I had a dream of acting and Wipeout gave me a taste of it.” Dave has a casting agent, has done acting courses and has even appeared in Australian film, Red Dog and a Jimmy Barnes video clip filmed at the Largs Pier Hotel. When asked what casting agents saw in him, he replied, “They like my beautiful looks, my enthusiasm and my modesty.” Dave’s preferred mode of transport is his 2007 Harley Davidson Heritage Softail Classic that he has named Ski (Spend kids’ inheritance). He said he had a revelation that he needs to be more outgoing and make the effort to talk to people more after a church service four months ago. “If I went to a party, I wouldn’t approach other people; I would wait for them to approach me,” Dave said of his personality in the past. He said he has had quite a change in character and urged others to be more

Game Reviews

outgoing and talk to people. “It makes them happy and it makes you happy,” he said. He said people should get out there and try new things, which would help them achieve a better balance between work and play. Not one to remain serious for long, Dave adds, “Don’t be shy, get out and do things - as long as they’re legal and morally right.” Another product of Dave’s character change has been spending more time with his children Karl, 22; Alex, 21; Scott, 20; Jacob, 16; Karina, 15 and Anna, 13. “It’s really good spending time with your kids in activities they enjoy,” he said. “It’s good to see your children’s lives unfold.” Dave’s competitive nature even compelled him to take up baking when he noticed a ‘Men’s Only Chocolate Cake’ Section at the Tanunda Show, which led to his entry receiving second place in the section earlier this year. Dave’s dangerous antics have been witnessed by his wife of almost 30 years, Jeanette, who said her life with her husband have been interesting and fun. “Someone has to keep him grounded,” Jeanette said. She had a taste of what was to come in their marriage while they were on their honeymoon when Dave decided to climb a coconut tree but fell and ended up with a tropical infection when he scraped his feet on the way down. Dave said he has to make everything he does extreme, even if it’s a trip down the street. “When my wife asks me to run to the shop, that’s what I do. I literally run to the shop.” For now, Dave is content with spending time with his children, thinking about the next big thing to achieve and keeping fit at Barossa Muay Thai under the training of Josh Graetz. “It’s a really good workout and I get to train with younger people, they keep me on my toes and I pass on what I’ve learnt to them.”

shut it’s doors by the end of the month. The MySpace Australia will fortunes of MySpace have swung wildly; for a moment in 2007, MySpace was valued at $12 billion when News Corp attempted to merge it with

Yahoo. Now, Murdoch reportedly wants just US$100 million for the aging company. MySpace has been a financial drag on News Corp, which recently reported a 6% drop in revenue to $8.26 billion, well-down on analysts forecasts of $8.45 billion. MySpace had re-skinned its Web presence in what was its biggest reboot to date, and embarked on an offensive to draw back users who had flocked other services. As part of the reshaped MySpace, the Australian entity will shift toward a strategic local partnership to manage advertising sales and content. Apple has reportedly signed a cloud-music serv agreement with EMI and have proceeded with an agreement with Warner Music Group with further rumours saying they’re close to signing with Sony and Universal. If Apple’s cloud-music service is launched successfully, it would mean that the customers could store their music on the company’s web server and access their music libraries from anywhere as long as the device is connected to Internet, taking less space on your hard drive. At the moment, Amazon and Google already have cloud-music services, Cloud Drive and Google Music.

Platform: Nintendo3DS Graphics: 6 Type: Fighting Sound: 6.5 Players: 1-2 Gameplay: 7 Rate: MA15+ Overall: 6.5 Imagine the surprise when what used to be a tactical FPS becomes a turn-based strategy game for the new 3DS! TCsGR:SSW gameplay takes place on battlefields segmented into grids, with each Ghost and enemy soldier occupying a square and taking turns looking for good places to take shots at each other while minimising the return fire. Occupying a building will give heavy cover but movement is hindered whilst the bushes and trees give less cover and may also block line of sight. The character classes are strongly differentiated, and each Ghost feels distinct from the others. While it takes a hit graphically with on-screen characters looking blurry and generic, this ends up being a strategy RPG that rivals the big names in the genre.

Platform: XBox360 Graphics: 7 Type: Platformer Sound: 7 Players: 1-2 Gameplay: 8.5 Rate: G Overall: 9 Developer Housemarquee’s Outland is a downloadable title with direct ties to several iconic games, the most noticeable of these is the color-switching gameplay found in Ikaruga (also the coins of Mario and the exploration of Metroid-vania). Matching the colours of unfriendly enemies or environmental hazards prevents you from taking damage, but you’ll have to take a walk on the opposite side to defeat the creatures. Players have to be on their toes in order to react to the level design, colour-juggling combat, edge-to-edge platforming, and risk-reward exploration. Wall jumps, hanging from ledges, and environmental spikes are all par for the course, but the fluidity with which the hero can navigate the terrain. Mixing genres can be a quick way to ensure a game’s uniqueness, but can also leave a lot to be desired. Thankfully, Outland is both unique and well-developed.

10 - A Man’s World, “The Leader”, May 25, 2011

Platform: Wii Graphics: 8 Type: Sports Sound: 7 Players: 1-2 Gameplay: 9 Rate: G Overall: 8.5 Unlike a classic Sims game (instead of creating households, house included), TS:M is much more streamlined and straightforward; the Sims you create are essentially the heroes of your kingdom: king, knight, wizard, bard, blacksmith, etc. For casual play, you don’t need to play around with a lot of the more fiddly elements of gameplay, just jump right in. The majority of the game is spent taking your Sims on quests, each quest being a self-contained story suited to the profession of your selected Sim. Sims: Medieval has the unique quality of being winnable. Overall, I can easily recommend The Sims: Medieval; it’s accessible, it’s fun, and there’s a metric ton of content.

Platform: PSP Graphics: 9 Type: Square Enix Sound: 8.5 Players: 1 Gameplay: 8.5 Rate: MA15+ Overall: 9 Back in 1999 (1998 in Japan), the first Parasite Eve game was released and it was a doozy; graphically, it was a step up for the PSX, as it mixed in realistic locales with both classic turn-based gameplay and some fun gun battles; it wasn’t a shooter, but a horror-RPG with guns! You see, the world is filled with the Twisted (biological monsters roaming a nearly-destroyed New York City). To stop them, you’ll go back in time using you ability to Overdive, which allows you to possess someone in the time period you need access to and then use them to blow the hell out of everyone with the biggest guns she can collect. It’s not even an RPG as there are no personal stats; as a weapon is used and points accumulated, more guns can be unlocked or upgrade the capacity and aimming on another. If you can look past the difficulty swings, The 3rd Birthday is a surprisingly fun experience.

Off the couch Creating music to our ears

World class stringed musical instruments ranging from guitars, violins and mandolins are being made in Nuriootpa by retiree, Mr Moss Munchenberg.

This former Angaston policeman, pastry cook, soldier, teacher, college administrator, sales executive, furniture maker and wood working enthusiast has retired after a varied career in the workforce. Nowadays he is involved with the Lions Club of Barossa Valley and is chairman of the Nuriootpa Tinkers Shed, a place where people of all ages are receiving voluntary instruction on making and restoring all things of wood, and many other projects. However, in his spare time this retiree is busy working in his own backyard workshop, turning out some pretty classy stringed instruments which he sells to professional musicians. Moss explains he initially started off his working life as a pastry cook prior to joining the SA Police Force. He always wanted to have his own business. National Service came along and he spent 13 years in the Australian Army Citizen’s Military Forces as a warrant officer/ caterer as a police officer. Moss quickly seized upon the opportunity to utilise the military to further his culinary skills. Moss claims he has always held a strong interest in woodwork which stemmed back to his days at the Clare High School. There his woodwork teacher, Mr Harold Jaensch took a big interest in his study. With restoring antique furniture very much in vogue at the time, Moss decided he would take up upholstery work, combining that with further study in wood carving. He always wanted to have his own business. Together with his wife, Sharon, the couple went onto owning

their own business in Adelaide, specialising in manufacturing Victorian style furniture and grandfather clocks, as well as operating their own wood carving school. With a staff of four men and one female, Moss and Sharon continued the business for over 10 years. Eventually he decided to sell the business and went to work for National Foods until his retirement. Around 1994 Moss’ son, Mark, an accomplished guitarist in Adelaide asked his father if he could make him a Gretsch style Archtop guitar. It was the kind being played by Brian Setzer of The Stray Cats. Mark wanted one of these guitars. He couldn’t afford to buy an original so he asked his father if he could make one. Moss explained, “It was a very expensive project so I decided to make something easier first, like a violin. “I enrolled in a violin making course at TAFE in Netley and made two violins while I was there. Everything is a challenge to me and I like to be a perfectionist so I made a hand carved jazz arch top guitar which led to a few more and finally my son got his own guitar from me. “Mark moved to Perth where there is a strong jazz society. He showed two of my instruments to a jazz lecturer there who kindly made a CD of music for me using my own guitars. “George Benson happened to be playing at the Burswood Casino and my son thought it would be good for George to appraise my guitar. The five minute appraisal ended up being 55 minutes and he rated it as being a world class instrument.” Today Moss custom builds all his musical instruments. Some have found their way overseas. He admits that in recent years he has not been so active but at 73 years of age, he still

LEFT: Mr Moss Munchenberg with musical instruments in various stage of manufacture.

BELOW: Mr Moss Munchenberg with two of the first instruments he made.

enjoys making instruments. Moss estimates that he has made 20 guitars in his time, most of which involve around 250 hours of loving work. Again he reminds us that he is a perfectionist and he doesn’t cut corners. And while Moss admits that he can’t personally play any of his instruments, his wife, Sharon has the greatest ear for tone. Together she is able to advise Moss of any slight improvement or fine tuning needed prior to the instrument being released for sale. Moss claims that no manufacturer of any size makes an acoustic instrument like he does. The guitars he makes are at the top end of the market, with an instrument selling for between 5 to $10,000. Materials alone are quite expensive. The 20 year old maple timber may cost up to $500 just to make the back plate of a guitar. Each guitar carries Moss’ Emberg badge. Some of his instruments are quite ornate with one guitar he showed depicting a gum leaf design and Mother of Pearl inlays together with a Northern Territory Jabiru bird. Another features a large piece of black opal.

HIT THE ROAD Nick to compete in Adelaide Hills rally Tanunda Sales Manager, Nick Lenthall is fired up for the Adelaide

Hills Tarmac Rally where he will race on closed twisty tarmac

stages between Angaston and McLaren Vale this Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

He will be competing in a classic 1976 Ford Escort and said he is feeling confident with the layout of the course this year. “This year’s roads are much tighter and the car’s nimble handling suits these roads well.” Nick will compete in 28 competitive stages in the Classic Cars Category together with Roxby Downs co-driver of two years, Rick Powell. Rick is in charge of reading out the pace notes on the competitive stages and this requires a great deal of trust

between driver and co-driver. Nick said on a rally stage the trees are less than a foot away, so they must take a very calculated approach to speed and safety. He said the pace notes are essential to complete the course quickly and safely. “Because of the information my co-driver gives me about the road ahead, we can drive quicker, but still with a great degree of safety.” The two have competed in many races together including the initial Targa High Country in Victoria last year, and a number of Classic Adelaide events. Their Targa Rally finished badly when a mechanical failure brought the car to a halt only minutes from the finish line, after two days

of tough competition. “The little car was screaming up Mount Buller, twisting from left to right with Rick calling out notes impeccably, when the clutch plate exploded and exited through the gearbox. “But I guess that’s motorsport for you,” Nick said. The Escort was chosen as the face of the New Classic Targa Adelaide website and Nick recently took the Escort to fastest under 2 litre naturally aspirated Sedan at the Mt Alma Mile Hill Climb at Inman Valley. “We keep tuning the car and improving its performance and so far, we haven’t even scratched the car in a rally. “Let’s hope we can keep it this way.”

Nick, 19, finished first in the six-hour Phillip Haydon Reliability Trial against 120 other competitors beginning at Tarlee Oval on May 7. “It was definitely a great start to the season with my first big outright win, but now I have more pressure because I’ve put a target on

my back for people to beat,” he said. Nick finished second outright in last year’s series and with a new sponsorship and bike, is a favourite to win this year’s trial. Nick was selected for sponsorship by Flinder’s motorcycle manager; Phil Watts after achieving a high result over four years of racing, and has taken a place in Flinders Motorcycle Husaberg Off Road Race Team this year. “It was awesome to be picked up by Husaberg and a huge relief to have some help with the costs of such an expensive sport. “There are four members of the team this year and we’ll be trying our best to promote the company and give it a good reputation.” Nick was introduced to the world of racing from an early age, after encouragement from his dad and two older twin brothers. “I have been riding on the back of bikes since I was about three years old and after watching both of my brothers race, I knew I wanted to do the exact same thing.” Nick began competition racing at 16, where he made a name for himself after finishing in the top 10 in enduro-x, beating both of his brothers. “I was excited when I found out the results because it was my first big achievement, and it’s always fun to have that friendly competition against my brothers, but we never take it seriously,” he said. Nick said there are famous racers he looks up to and strives to be like, but his brother Tristan was his biggest inspiration. “Tristan had a near death crash in 2009 during a three hour cross-country where he hit a tree. Afterwards he came back to racing as strong as he had before the crash, and that really shows what you need to be a good rider.” Nick said the crash really put things into perspective for the three brothers and they all raced slower in their first few competitions back. “It did affect my riding when I first came back but when you’ve got the racing bug, nothing can stop you.”

Everything comes in handy for Steve

There are few men who don’t have a shed to tinker around in and in the case of Mr Steve Bain, of Angaston it’s where all the action happens.

While Steve admits his is not the biggest or greatest, he has made good use of his backyard shed. Although there’s not enough room in it for his car he doesn’t waste any space inside his shed. For Steve it was where he based all his material and tools needed when he first commenced some fairly major repair work on his newly acquired house. With his skill Steve went about pulling down much of the worn or damaged building material on his house. “There were leaks going everywhere in the roof,” he

remarked. But Steve admits he is a man who doesn’t like to sit still. Through having his shed he has been able to not only repair things around the house but also build cupboards for his house. When his three children were growing up Steve became the instant handyman to repair and fix the childrens’ bikes or toys. “I don’t chuck a lot out. There are always bits and pieces that come in handy for something,” laughed Steve. “I am always resurrecting something. Whether it’s my daughters, Kylie and Jodie who bring home their shoes to repair or sharpening knives. Even my son Greg has the

odd thing for dad to fix. “I even do a lot of the servicing work on my car like changing the oil. I’ve made equipment for my caravan and am always painting something,” he adds. While Steve hasn’t got any big machinery like a lathe, he has a fairly well equipped and well used workshop. In his shed, Steve is well set up for playing darts and table tennis. He has his own bar from left over building materials. While the small bar fridge at the back is currently empty, Steve says it has been well used over the years. This was especially so over the past eight years when he made an estimated 250 bottles of home brew e ach year. As someone who enjoys a beer after sport, Steve soon perfected his favourite varieties of pale ale, draft cider, real ale and cider lime. Steve couldn’t really imagine life for him without a shed. He has seen some pretty classy ones that have carpet on the floor. The walls are lined and there’s nothing out of place. “You can certainly make your shed look as if it’s part of the house by lining it with timber,” he remarked. But Steve doesn’t need anything fancy. Afterall with the aid of his shed he has been able to build his own patio, extend the shed, re-build part of his house with new Hardiplank. He has even done his share of cementing by building retaining walls and shifting seven tonne of rock before he commenced the cementing. In one day alone he personally made five and a half tonnes of cement for improvements around his home. And he admits one or two bottles of his home brew went down after the job. For the past 38 years Steve has worked as a maintenance repairman with SA Water. He explains that his father, Keith Bain, of Cadel built two houses himself so perhaps that is where he has inherited some of his handyman skills. Steve’s son, Greg is a general builder with C. O. Juncken and while he is currently playing cricket in England, he too is following in his father’s Line trimmers from $249.00 footsteps. Brushcutters from $299.00

Honda’s new hand held range. Honda’s brushcutters, blowers and hedgecutters are a class above ordinary garden tools. Each comes with Advanced 4-Stroke Technology that’s so powerful you may need a seat belt to drive one. So whatever garden you own, and whatever you have in mind, Honda’s hand held range can handle it.

Often, a badly drained garden can be improved markedly by incorporating generous amounts of compost. Raising the garden beds, ideally by at least 22 cm, allows the root zone of most vegetables to grow in well-drained conditions regardless of the soil quality below, and the raised beds warm up more rapidly in spring. Digging, particularly double digging can also improve drainage. But while double digging is a good remedy, there is a slightly less laborious alternative. Choose a time when the soil is fairly dry, and dig it over to a spade’s depth. As you complete each row of digging, work along the bottom of the trench with a fork, driving it in to its full depth and levering it back so that the soil is lifted and fractures. You may need a pickaxe or mattock to break the hard pan. Do not try to turn the layer of subsoil beneath the pan. Just push the fork in, move it until the soil begins to give, then pull it out. In the worst cases, you may need to install underground drains before attempting to grow anything.

G N I K Q BB

If waterlogging occurs on heavy or low-lying land and there’s nowhere for the water to go, then drain pipe are probably the only answer. This is worth attempting only when the trouble is really serious and if there is a ditch into which the pipes can empty. If there isn’t a ditch, you’ll need to dig a soakaway – a large pit filled with stones or hardcore. Laying drains is heavy, specialist work, and you may want to hire someone to help you. If you decide to lay drain pipe, you can purchase

them from builders’ or agricultural suppliers. For gardens, choose porous flexible plastic pipes; they should have an interior diameter of 50 or 75 mm. The drain pipe leads to the ditch or soakaway. First, lay 3 cm of gravel as a base in a deep trench that slopes gently towards the ditch or soakaway; a drop of not less than 30 cm in 30 m is sufficient. Lay porous clay pipes end to end on the gravel base, setting the pipes with their ends about 2 mm apart so that water can enter from the surrounding soil. Alternatively, lay a single length of porous plastic pipe on the gravel base. Then cover with a further layer of gravel. Cover this with fine mesh before filling with a 25–30 cm layer of topsoil.

>> Raised beds

An easier solution, particularly for a small area, is to make raised beds. They are ideal in areas with heavy seasonal rainfall, too. They also allow you to grow a wide range of plants when your garden has problem soil because you can fill the beds with whatever soil mix you choose. You can make a permanent raised bed with sides of bricks, stone blocks or railway sleepers, or a less expensive and permanent structure using planks of wood or corrugated iron. Make the bed 30–60 cm high. The ideal size is 1.2 m wide, which allows you to work the bed without walking on the soil. Allow a minimum of a 45 cm path in between beds for wheelbarrow access. Put a layer of rubble in the base to help drainage, then fill with soil. Let the soil settle for two weeks before planting. Once built, all you need do is fork over the beds each year and top them up with organic matter. No-dig gardens have similar benefits.

D.I.Y. Interior painting: Preparation guide All your effort can count for very little if the surface does not provide a sound base on which the paint can adhere. Professionals find that preparation can take up the total job time, especially if it’s been a long time since the last paint job. To avoid lengthy preparation, freshen up your paintwork before the surface deteriorates! The following simple steps may seem fairly unexciting, but they will ensure that you are happy with the results for years to come.

>> Checking

Look for signs of any problems with old paint peeling, flaking, cracking, chalking or blistering. These suggest repair work is necessary. Loose or faulty surfaces should be removed to create a sound, smooth, clean and dry base for painting.

>> Cleaning

If your surface is sound, with no flaking or peeling, the next step is cleaning, Wash it down will with sugar soap, remembering to follow the directions on the pack. This will remove grease, smoke stains and dirt to give you a good, clean surface to paint. Wash walls from bottom upwards, to prevent runs from marking the existing paintwork.

>> Mould

To remove mould, use a hypochlorite (household bleach) solution rather than sugar soap. Dilute 1 part hypochlorite with 3 parts of clean water to make the solution. Wear gloves and goggles to protect your skin and eyes. Apply the solution with a thick scouring pad to lightly abrade the surface and ensure physical removal of stubborn areas of mould growth. Leave the solution on the surface for 10 minutes, then wash down thoroughly with clean water. You may have to repeat the process in severe cases.

>> Stripping

Woodwork

If your old painted woodwork is showing signs of peeling, or if

it’s heavily layered, it should be sanded or stripped back to a firm base before repainting. The most common methods of stripping are using a heat gun or chemical stripper.

>> Using Chemical Stripper

Read the directions on the pack and follow them carefully, these chemicals are not particularly user friendly! Wear gloves and eye protection, open doors and windows for ventilation and keep any children well away. The one step or new generation paint strippers usually give the best results. Scoring the surface will help the stripper penetrate layers of paint. Brush on a liberal coat of stripper and let it stand until the paint begins to blister. Do not let it dry out or it will harden and become difficult to remove. Remove the softened paint with a scraper. Depending on how many layers of existing paint there are and the type, you may have to repeat the process several times. F i n a l l y , neutralise if n e c e s s a r y according to pack instructions and sand smooth.

operative. It’s up to you whether you use a remover, which contains wetting agents to help soften the adhesive, or warm water. Try warm water first! Cover the floor with a cloth and apply the solution liberally with a large sponge until the adhesive is softened. This may take several applications. Carefully scrape off the paper and as much adhesive as you can. If the paper was hung over unsealed plaster or wallboard it may be difficult to remove without damaging the plaster. Scrub the walls to remove the adhesive residue. Finally, rinse with clean warm water and let the walls dry completely. You can also consider hiring a wallpaper ‘steamer’, available from most hire centres and many larger hardware and paint stores. Instructions are provided with the machine.

paint with a scraper. Repeat the process if you need to, then sand any residual paint back to bare wood or a firm base. Be careful using a heat gun near flammable materials. When using it close to glass, use a sheild attachment or hold in a piece of metal to protect the glass from the very hot air flow.

>> Removing

Wallpaper

Depending on the type and amount of wall covering you wish to remove, you may choose to do it entirely by hand using a remover solution, or rent a steaming machine. Newer vinyl wall coverings can often be peeled off dry hand. Any backing paper residue can be readily removed by sponging on warm water and scraping it off. Other vinyl and traditional wallpapers may be less co-

a Heat Gun

Today these are reasonably economical to buy and simple to use. Never use a heat gun after using chemical stripper in the same area, as the chemical residue may vaporise or ignite. To use, flow the hot air from the nozzel over the wood until the paint just begins to bubble freely, overheating can make the paint sticky and scorch the wood. Gently remove the softened

AUTUMN 2011 GUTTERS: Now is the time to clean out your gutters and downpipes from fallen leaves and debris which can cause overflowing gutters, blocked downpipes and rubbish going into your rainwater tank. To stop leaves going into your downpipe why not install a rain head. The new Leaf Eater Advanced is a very compact, versatile rain head for quick and easy installation. The Leaf Eater is installed under your gutter outlet to allow leaves, twigs and debris to slide to the ground while clean water flows through the pipe. You can install gutter guard over your gutter which protects them from fallen leaves. Gutter guards are easy to install and relatively inexpensive. LAWNMOWER: Another job over winter is to maintain your lawnmower. Sharpen or replace your mower blades and prepare your mower for spring. MICE CONTROL: Rats and mice are becoming a big problem at the moment. An easy way for them to get into your house is through the weepholes in the bottom of your brickwork. Pest Stoppas made by Weepa can fix the problem. By installing them into existing weepholes you can exclude mice and cockroaches while still allowing air to flow. Installation is simple and they can be cut down to size to slide into the weephole. There are many new Rodent Stations on the market now that can be used indoors or out. These Stations shield the bait or mechanical traps to help protect children or pets from contact.
