SeppeltSfield WineS ~ 160th AnniverSAry
Celebrating 160 years The new Managing Director of Seppeltsfield Wines, Mr Warren Randall reflects on the estate’s past, whilst also looking into the company’s bright future, on the 160th Anniversary of a Barossa Valley icon... “It is with a great deal of humility and pride that I can sit back on the Seppeltsfield lawns enjoying a glass of 10 year old Para with my old mate ‘Charlie Brown’ (a German Shorthaired Pointer of course). “We are contemplating and celebrating what it would be like to live for 160 years (that would make Charlie 1,120 years old in human years!). “It is hard to imagine, but five generations of Seppelt family and one generation of corporate ownership have guided Seppeltsfield to where it is today, as arguably Australia’s finest Wine Estate. “Indeed, 1851 sounds like a long time ago. English settlers had only been in Australia for 63 years and in South Australia for a mere 15 years. “History tells us that the Barossa’s rich culture has evolved from a hypnotic blend of English, Irish, German and Slavic traditions all poured into a rural Australian melting pot. “The Seppelt family – Joseph, Johanna and their three children – emigrated in 1849 from Silesia in Prussia. “The enterprising spirit, strong work ethic and firm moral code displayed through the generations by the Seppelt family is apparent as you walk through the beautiful surrounds of Seppeltsfield today. “From a personal point of view it is indeed a great privilege and an honour to be an owner and manager of this magnificent estate. “Little did I know when I was Champagnemaker at Great Western (as a family employee from 1982-1989) that I would one day have the opportunity to be a custodian of Australia’s iconic wine estate. “Charlie and I have made a promise to do her proud.”

160 YEARS
1851 - 1860 The Seppelt family settled in the Barossa Valley on February 20, 1851, purchasing the property now known as Seppeltsfield. The Seppeltsfield story began with Joseph Ernst Seppelt, a merchant, who migrated to Australia with his wife, Johanna Charlotte, his two sons, Benno and Hugo, and daughter Ottilie in 1849, from Silesia, in what is now Poland. He also took 13 of his employees and their families, with the hope of re-establishing the family business. Seppeltsfield’s first vintage was produced in the family dairy in 1856, five years after the family settled in the Barossa Valley. Originally, Joseph Seppelt had wanted to produce tobacco, but later found the area proved unsuitable for
the tobacco plant because, although it grew rapidly, the leaf was too strong to be used in the production of tobacco or snuff. Joseph Seppelt found the climate of the warm and dry Barossa Valley region was ideal for growing grapes. The Seppelt family vines flourished in this fertile valley and Joseph also encouraged his neighbours to plant vines. In the five years Joseph had settled in Seppeltsfield, the landscape had been transformed to lush fields of green and gold vines.
RIGHT: The family homestead at Seppeltsfield.
1861 - 1870 J oseph Seppelt started constructing a full scale winery in 1867, but he did not live to see it completed. Joseph died on January 29, 1868, aged 55 and he is buried at the Greenock cemetery . His wife, Johanna Charlotte, only survived him a little over two years, dying on April 13, 1870. Jo s e p h ’s enterprising and pioneering spirit lived on after him in his eldest son, Oscar Benno Pedro Seppelt, who worked hard to ensure his father’s dream came true.
Only 21 years old when he inherited the winery in 1868, it was Benno’s influence, more than anything else, which earned Seppeltsfield its reputation for quality wines. Unlike his father, he did not receive the benefits of a European education, but instead attended the local school in Tanunda. With his determination to succeed and natural ability, Benno set out to expand the family business. A year after his father’s death, Benno Seppelt opened the first purpose-built winery in 1868.

SeppeltSfield WineS ~ 160th AnniverSAry 1871 - 1880 he was always willing to share his experience and knowledge.   On November 16, 1877 the stone central section of the distillery was opened by the State Treasurer Hon. J. P. Boucaut JP. In 1878 the cellar Joseph Seppelt had started constructing had quadrupled in size in less than 10 years. In celebration of the magnificent stone Seppeltsfield port store finally being completed, Benno Seppelt selected a puncheon (a 500 litre barrel) of his finest port wine from that vintage and laid it in the new storage maturation cellar. This barrel was to sit for a minimum of 100 years in the one spot and then released as the Seppeltsfield 100 year old Para Tawny Port. Each year from 1978 the next vintage of the port has been released in a 750ml bottle.

1881 - 1890 A new Vinegar Factory was built in 1882 and is situated on a sloping bank on the north side of the cellars. Prior to 1882, vinegar had been produced in a shed abutting the winery. The Vinegar Factory is separated from the rest of the buildings by an open space, which is shaded by gums and pines. Seppelt’s vinegar has for years been held in the highest esteem in households throughout South Australia and has been used for pickling purposes of almost all other landmark South Australian brands. In 1886 Seppeltsfield received a third order for 50 cases of Seppeltsfield sherry for the Albert Hall in London, where it had become very popular. The Seppeltsfield gravity flow winery was established in 1889 and

On November 23, 1870 Benno Seppelt married Sophie Schroeder of Tanunda. Benno’s prosperity in the winemaking business was more than assisted by his new wife, Sophie, and over a period of 20 years or so Benno and Sophie are believed to have had a total of 21 pregnancies, 16 children, 13 of whom (four girls and nine boys) survived to adulthood. From 1871 - 1880, Seppeltsfield was not only a large-scale commercial and industrial enterprise, but was a community cornerstone. Benno and Sophie extended their responsibility beyond their own personal concerns with the winery, family, property and household, to their employees, grape growers and the community as a whole. One of the remarkable things about Benno Seppelt was his generosity to the other winemakers, with whom

1891 - 1900 The office and bottling cellar were built in 1898. After bottles had been carefully washed, they would be placed in crates in order to enable them to drain before being forwarded to be bottling cellars. The bottling cellar was built to connect directly with the main storage cellars by a cross passage. At the same time, it is connected
by a lift with the dispatching department, which reduced the amount of unnecessary handling once the bottles were filled. By the turn of the century, Seppeltsfield was said to have been the largest winery in the world. Over 80 different kinds of wines, brandies, spirits, liqueurs, bitters, cordials and vinegars were produced and bottled on site.

1901 - 1910 In 1901, Seppeltsfield products accounted for a third of all wine produced in the Barossa Valley. With the rapid expansion of the family owned business, B. Seppelt and Sons formally incorporated. Separate visits were made to Seppeltsfield by the Governor General Earl and Lady Dudley; South Australian Governor, Sir Hort Day Bosanquet and Prime Minister Andrew Fisher in 1909.
1911 - 1920
B. Seppelt & Sons Ltd. was formally Incorporated in the early 1900’s.
Although naturalized in 1866, Benno had to obtain certain exemptions under the War Precautions Act in 1916, to allow him to conduct business due to his German heritage and place of birth. In the same year, B. Seppelt and Sons purchased Chateau Tanunda and Lyndoch wineries, marking the business’ expansion into a multilevel company. By 1920, Seppeltsfield achieved a milestone vintage of one million gallons (4.5m litres).

1951 - 1960 The Seppelt family celebrated a milestone 100 years of winemaking in 1951. T he centenary was celebrated by a of number events, including a family celebration at Seppeltsfield and an official event whereby a centenary plaque was presented and unveiled on the old boiler chimney at the front of the house by the Bacchus Club. This event was attended by many members of the wine industry from around Australia. In 1953 Seppeltsfield launched the first vintage of Para Liqueur. The first vintage of Para Liqueur, 1922, was launched to coincide with the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. The first vintage was selected from stocks of premium Para which were produced in a very buoyant year.

SeppeltSfield WineS ~ 160th AnniverSAry 1961 - 1970 The death of Clara Blanca in 1963 brought an end to continuous family occupation of the home. Clara Blanca Seppelt was the second daughter and third child of Benno and Sophie Seppelt. She was born March 22, 1876 and died on July 12, 1963 at the age of 87. She was a spinster and
lived all her life in the family home at Seppeltsfield. Five years after the death of Clara Blanca, Seppeltsfield was visited by His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh in 1967. Prince Philip had a tour of the winery and then had lunch in the Homestead with members of the family.
1971 - 1980 In 1971 B. Seppelt and Sons became a public company. As a result of the beginning of the table wine boom, the family business had to modify much of its equipment to cover both the rapid change in winemaking practices and to achieve the rapid growth necessary. A new central bottling hall was being built and winery facilities modernised at Great Western and Chateau Tanunda. The company needed to raise a capital through the stock exchange to facilitate the modernisation of the winery. The outcome was a 25 per cent float of the company. Seppeltsfield experienced its largest vintage at Seppeltsfield
of 7,200 tonnes in 1972. This was a boom year for wineries and grape growers in the Barossa Valley and the Riverland. Fruit was processed for both fortified wine and also table wine to help alleviate the pressures at Chateau Tanunda. In 1978, Seppeltsfield celebrated t he launch of the first 100 year old Para Liqueur, which was laid down in barrel by Benno in 1878 to celebrate the opening of his new winery extension. His instructions were that the barrel was not to be opened for 100 years. Every year since then, a barrel of the winery’s best port has been set aside for release when 100 years old.

1981 - 1990 The gravity flow winery at Seppeltsfield was closed in 1983 after the vintage due to high operating cost factors and the necessity to make major modifications to comply with new corporate safety regulations. Therefore, vintage shifted to Chateau Ta n u n d a a n d G r e a t Western. In 1984 B. Seppelt and Sons was purchased by the South Australian Brewing Company. By this time, the family controlled only 25 per cent of the company’s shares. As a result of a stock market raid by Adsteam, the South Australian Brewing Company made a bid to purchase all the shares of the company. This was accepted by the shareholders with B. Seppelt & Sons becoming a wholly owned subsidiary of the South Australian Brewing. In 1990 the new modern vintage cellar was constructed. As a result of the South Australian Brewing rationalising the company, Chateau Tanunda was closed and put up for sale. A new modern winery was built at Seppeltsfield and winemaking returned to the estate.
The gravity flow winery at Seppeltsfield closed in 1983 and vintage shifted to Chateau Tanunda and Great Western.

SeppeltSfield WineS ~ 160th AnniverSAry 1991 - 2000 Store nine and ten were constructed in 1991 at Seppeltsfield. A s a result of the closing of Chateau Tanunda and the recommencement of winemaking at Seppeltsfield, it was necessary to increase the wood maturation and storage facilities in conjunction with the new vintage cellar. In 1993, the consolidation of Penfold Wine Group fortified stocks into Seppeltsfield resulted in the first significant expansion of small wood usage for many decades. Following the collapse of the Adsteam organisation, the South Australian Brewing Company purchased the Penfold Wine Group. From this point, winemaking at Seppeltsfield went into gradual decline but became the centre for fortified wine maturation and storage for the expanded group.

In 2010 Seppeltsfield Wines marked a special release of the 1910 vintage of 100 year old Para. This release coincided with the resurrection of the historic gravity flow winery for the 2010 vintage. Over 1,600 tonnes of premium red grapes, principally from the Seppeltsfield vineyard and wider Barossa region, were crushed and fermented in the old cellar. Winemaker Fiona Donald explains: “The cellar works on a gravity flow to tank system. At the top of the hill, trucks bring in grapes and load them into the crusher. Juice and grape marc then flow into the tanks for fermentation.” Eightyfive of the 120 cement tanks, in the cellar, were upgraded and lined with stainless steel. Each tank holds up to seven tonnes. “The system has turned out fantastic results,” she said. The gravity flow winery is now the oldest working winery in Australia. On February 20, 2011 (Seppeltsfield Wines’ 160th Birthday) there will be a release of the 100 year old Para Port from the 1911 vintage. This unique wine is the 33 rd consecutive 100 year old Para Tawny to be released (the first being the 1878 vintage in 1978). Seppeltsfield 100 year old Pa r a ( r i g h t ) remains to this day the only wine in the world bottled following 100 years of maturation in oak.
