Barossa Vintage Festival
2011
April 23 to May 1
A message from the Chairman – Mr Bill Biscoe old favourites, such as the Parade, the Ball, the Rare & Distinguished Wine Auction, Heritage Hotspots and the Town Days, but there are also variations on themes, such as the Grand Ball moving out to Seppeltsfield, and Tanunda Town Day becoming Tanunda Pioneer Town Day on Thursday following Ziegenmarkt. Carnival, the opening event of the Festival, was a huge success when introduced in 2009, and will again set the tone for the celebration with a free, familyfriendly event on the glorious grounds at Seppeltsfield. For pure entertainment, Linfield Road Wines at Williamstown will
host a new event, Comedy in the Vines, with a great line-up of comedians. Also for the first time, the inaugural Vintage Festival Cup will be contested on the last day of the Festival by two traditional football rivals, Nuriootpa and Tanunda. The Barossa has a long and interesting history and there are numerous exhibitions and reenactments at locations throughout the Valley every day of the week. Traditional crafts such as embroidery and quilting are on display, as are photographic and art exhibitions. This is essentially a rural community and this year will

With only a short time to go, the Barossa Vintage Festival Committee and volunteers are busy finalising details and putting the finishing touches to events. A fabulous programme of events has been compiled and printed in a most attractive and user-friendly booklet, which is available online or in electronic form on the Barossa Vintage Festival website. There are over 120 different events and activities to cater for every possible taste, ranging from music to art and craft, to heritage – and, of course, wine and all its facets. For previous attendees at past Festivals, there are so many of the
feature a great emphasis on the craft of building Scarecrows – watch for them throughout the area. Music lovers are well catered for. If you like jazz you will love Libby O’Donovan at Jazz in the Cellar. For classical music lovers, there are two chances to hear renowned violinist Niki Vasilakis and classical guitarist Slava Grigoryan in the ravishing surrounds of the Chateau Barrosa Ballroom. Brass band aficionado? Big, Bold & Brassy is for you. Choral music lovers never miss the chance to experience Liedertafel. And the best party in town will be at Tanunda Under a Hot Tin Roof. If you are into wine, Distinguished Vineyards is an absolutely essential experience, and then don’t miss the chance to meet the winemakers at Legends Behind the Barrel. An innovation this year is the opportunity to attend Wine Workshops at any – or all – of 15 wineries, who will help you to judge wines better and come
to grips with the intricacies of terroir, fermentation techniques, wine storage and aging, varietals and blending, and all the other factors that make the fermented juice of the grape such a fascinating subject. There are so many other events featuring our fabulous wines and food it is impossible to mention them all. I hope you will join us at the 2011 Barossa Vintage Festival as we ‘Celebrate the Blend’. Inaugural ‘Footstomp Folly’ at Thorn-Clarke Wines
Barossa Vintage Festival 2011 With your help we will be making wine by stomping grapes the old fashioned way. All stompers will then receive a complimentary bottle of this wine once it has been fermented and aged in oak. The day will be filled with entertainment and activity, including live music and tastings. Enjoy a gourmet barbeque lunch catered by Barossa Fine Foods while sampling a pre-release of the 2010 Shotfire Shiraz from the barrel.
The 2011 Inaugural Footstomp Folly will be held at Thorn-Clarke Wines, Angaston, and offers guests a chance to make wine the old fashioned way by stomping grapes. The foot stomping will take place on the winery lawns, overlooking the vineyards and accompanied by live band, ‘Little Black Dress’.
The stomping is followed by a barbecue lunch and samples of prerelease 2010 Shiraz from the barrel. The Gawler Park Road to ThornClarke Wines is now sealed so cars will be kept clean when driving up to the cellar door. Footstomp Folly is on April 22-24 from 12 p.m.-5 p.m.

Kick off your Festival celebrations at Carnival The beautiful grounds of historic Seppeltsfield Winery will be the setting for the official opening event of the 2011 Barossa Vintage Festival. Carnival, Easter Saturday, April 23 will set the scene for nine days of celebrations and will provide entertainment for the whole family. Carnival was first introduced into the Barossa Vintage Festival calendar in 2009 – the day proved to be hugely successful attracting approximately 6,000 attendees. We have asked Nicole Hodgson, Carnival Convenor, what to expect from this year’s event... “We’ve played on the strengths of the inaugural event with the focus on family friendly, so the day will run from 10.30 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. Parents can then get the kids ready for the baby-sitter and go on to the next event.” “There is something too for everyone, so if it’s just you and your partner or the whole family you will find entertainment and activities to suit your interests and tastes. “There will be plenty of live entertainment, and we will be ending the day with locals Rielly Ellendon and the crew from Colonel Mustard.” Carnival will feature a selection of wines from the Seppeltsfield Road Business Alliance, local Barossa gourmet food including traditional Rotegrutze and performances by Cool 4 Kids, Heritage Hotspots, the Bendigo Symphonic Orchestra and square dancing demonstrations. There will also be an assortment of children’s games, a bouncy castle, massive Easter Egg Hunt, local artisans, craft, face painting and helicopter joy flights. What is on Nicole’s ‘must do’ list for the day? “For the children don’t miss Murray the Magician or the Cool 4 Kids performance. Plus the Easter Egg Hunts, sponsored this year by Cadbury. For the adults make sure you join in the Rock ‘n’ Roll dancing and line up for a touch of pampering with the Endota Day Spa team.” Sounds like a great way to start the 2011 Barossa Vintage Festival, and entry is free! If you would like more information on Carnival visit www.barossavintagefestival.com.au or call the Barossa Vintage Festival Office on 8563 0663.

Barossa Vintage Festival
2011
April 23 to May 1
Music at the churches
The Barossa Vintage Festival kicks off at Whistler Wines, Marananga with involvement in the opening event Carnival, where they will be part of the wine tent run by Seppeltsfield Road Business Alliance. On Easter Sunday Whistler will again be having their very popular Easter Sunday Family Fun Day from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the gardens of the winery. They are teaming up with local restaurateur, Damon de Ruiter from 40’s Café. As always the children are kept entertained with Easter craft and games, free face-painting and two huge Easter Egg Hunts held in the scrub where there’s a fair chance of sighting Easter Bunny! This year Cadbury have offered to sponsor the egg hunt with a donation of 2,000 eggs, so no-one will miss out at Whistler! For the first time theye have ‘Let it Roll’ providing red hot rhythm and blues music and they come direct from a sell-out Fringe season. A chance to enjoy the relaxed and friendly ambience of ‘Lunch with the Whistler Family’ will happen Monday to Friday with local chef, Owen Andrews catering, and the Whistler ‘boys’ bringing out some special tasting of back vintage wines. On April 25, beginning at 6 p.m., Whistler is hosting an affordable family friendly ‘Twilight Picnic Concert’ featuring six local music groups. The natural scrub and vineyards is a perfect backdrop while sitting back, relaxing with a wine and picnic. Of course they’re hoping to be able to enjoy the garden setting, but if the weather is inclement the barrel shed has great acoustics! A first for the Pfeiffer family is providing the wine at ‘Under a Hot Tin Roof ’ on Friday night at the Tanunda Show Hall, which will cap off a busy but hopefully happy Vintage Festival for all at Whistler. Their famous tin scarecrows are always worth a visit just to see them scattered around the Whistler Wines property.

This year in January, she successfully completed her final exams for her PhD in Composition Studies at Indiana University. The crowd can also enjoy an afternoon of Baroque favourites by acclaimed Adelaide musicians.
On April 28 Langmeil Church will showcase the cream of the Barossa’s young musicians in a varied programme of light classics from 5.30 p.m. to 7 p.m. A concert and bush lunch will be held at Gruenberg Lutheran Church, Gruenberg Road, Moculta on April 29 at 12 p.m. The concert will feature guest artist, Emma Horwood who is a soprano and harpist and a three course bush lunch will be available at 1 p.m.

Churches around the Barossa Valley will be getting into the spirit of music during the Barossa Vintage Festival this year, with a number of concerts available for people to enjoy. A community group supported by churches in Angaston, Valley Voices Choir will be singing sacred and popular music at Angaston Town Day on April 27 from 3 to 4 p.m. “Celebrate with Music” at the Angaston Uniting Church on Sturt Street, Angaston, will feature the choir, a Dodd pipe organ and local artists. Admission price will be a gold coin donation. The Langmeil Lutheran Church at Murray Street, Tanunda, will be hosting twilight concerts during the Vintage Festival. The concert on April 25 at 3 p.m. will feature the world premiere of a new piece written by internationally acclaimed composer and former Barossa resident, Natalie Williams. Three talented young musicians – including Sophie Radke, also from the Barossa – now have the huge challenge of getting the work up to speed for the concert. “It has been a bit nerve-wracking,” commented Sophie, who is working feverishly to learn the new piece. To add to her difficulty, Sophie recently had 19 different performances during the Fringe Festival, in addition to her advanced cello studies at the Elder Conservatorium. Sophie has teamed up with viola player, Isabella Sampson and violinist, Julia Flint – also Elder Conservatorium trained – to form a new trio for this concert. The girls are friends as well as musical colleagues and their chemistry will help them cope with the pressure of a new work. “It’s quite a privilege really to have a work composed just for us, especially by someone as

Drug and Alcohol Services South Australia (DASSA) recognises that when you are enjoying yourself at the Barossa Vintage Festival, you could easily forget about the serious consequences that can occur as a result of drinking too much alcohol. Keep in mind that having four standard drinks doubles your risk of an alcohol-related injury and your risk increases every extra drink you have. In South Australia, there are around 7,000 hospitalisations and 300 deaths associated with alcohol each year. In addition, drinking too much may lead to trouble with the police, and humiliation and embarrassment resulting from reduced inhibitions. The following tips will assist you to stay safer and in control if you choose to drink alcohol at the Festival: • Have a water or soft drink to quench your thirst before you start drinking alcohol. Tap water is free at the Festival and DASSA will be donating bottled water to the event. • Set a limit and count your drinks. To make it easier to keep track of how much you have had
An exhibition of exquisite needlework by local embroiderers will take place on April 25 at the C.W.A. Hall in Murray Street, Tanunda. A multitude of techniques including cross stitch, hardanger, thread painting and surface stitchery have been used in the embroidery exhibition. A collection of miniature embroidered owls will be featured in the exhibition and a quilt will be raffled.

Mark and Gloria Rosenzweig again open their third generation family farm at Moculta to the public for their seventh consecutive Barossa Vintage Festival. Originally only showcasing their unique German styled apiary, which is the only remaining one of its kind in Australia (and one of a very few remaining in the world), the “Rosies” have progressively expanded their display with a focus on catering for the entertainment of budget conscious families. The large array of farm animals are a major focus. Many have babies and can be freely petted and fed. The large sandpit is also most popular with children. A locally produced film gives an insight into the workings of the fascinating honey bee, whilst the local honey flavours are available for tasting. Partnerships have been formed with local collector, Miss Janet Bradtke, who will display her large collection of model vehicles, and the Moculta based Hartz Barn Wines, who will again serve their fine wines from the woolshed. Widely known for their catering services, the “Rosies” daily provide roast meals, homemade soups, puddings,

to drink, wine glasses at the Festival will have a line printed on them to indicate one standard drink. • Eat before and while you are drinking. Alcohol is absorbed much more slowly when your stomach is full. • One drink at a time. Avoid drinking in rounds and topping up drinks, as it becomes difficult to keep track of how much you’ve had to drink. • Pace yourself. Have a non-alcohol drink as a spacer and take sips not gulps. • Keep active – you tend to drink less. Avoid just sitting and drinking. If you are very active, remember to drink lots of water. • Try low-alcohol alternatives (eg. light or midstrength beer). • Plan safe transport. Have a designated driver, keep enough money to pay for a taxi or use public transport. • Always check the effects of prescription drugs are not interfered with by alcohol. Reinvigorating the scarecrow If you haven’t ever taken the time to follow the Scarecrow Trail through the Barossa, this is the year to do it! Over the past few months an Artist in Residence Programme supported by Festivals Australia, Arts SA and the Barossa Vintage Festival has taken place in the region. Locals have shared in a rare opportunity to work with three renown artists, Annalise Rees a Recycled Sculpture Artist; Jason Milanovic a Body Casting Sculpture Artist and Yvonne Dalton a local Textile Artist. The outcome is something that needs to be seen for yourself. The stereo typical scarecrow will never be the same again, with a renewed enthusiasm and expanded artistic focus. “The resulting sculptures are nothing short of inspiring,” said Kelly Rowett, Barossa Vintage Festival Event Coordinator. Over 250 students from both Primary and Secondary schools have participated in the Community Workshops, along with residents from Tanunda Lutheran Home, members of Carer’s Link, the administration team from Abbeyfield and representatives from Barossa Health. All the participants have taken the new techniques, skills and ideas learnt back to their classroom, business and community group to use in the creation of their
own scarecrow as part of the scarecrow competition. Hobby and professional artists in the region have also benefited from the visiting artists through two intense three-day workshops where the stunning ‘Aurora’ (built entirely from recycled materials) and the body-casts of local resident, Kristie Fromm and President of the Barossa Vintage Festival, Bill Biscoe have been created. These sculptures join the Community Scarecrow which has been built over eight stand alone workshops at Seppeltsfield Winery. They will be on display at Carnival, the Parade and the Grand Vintage Festival Ball. With over 50 entries in this year’s scarecrow competition, Kelly encourages everyone to “drop by the Visitor Information Centre or download your copy of the Scarecrow Trail map, get a car load of friends together and follow the Scarecrow Trail throughout the Barossa – you can be sure of an entertaining drive!”

Barossa Valley Floral Designer’s Club to celebrate 50th Anniversary Members and friends of the Barossa Valley Floral Designer’s Club will celebrate the group’s 50th Anniversary at Lyndoch Hill on May 9. Past members are invited to attend. Further information is available from Rosie Sherwood, president, phone 8564 0015, or work 8564 0214, or Joy Dittrich, secretary, phone 8562 2340. On January 9, 1961 floral art classes commenced at Tanunda by the Gawler Adult Education Centre. The first classes were held in the home of Mrs Laurine Liebich, Tanunda, who instructed in formal work, contemporary arrangements and wire work. With the increase in students wanting to learn, Mrs Liebich eventually taught at Gawler, Freeling, Kapunda and Eudunda. She was also a member of the South Australian Judge’s School for Floral Art. After six months a club was formed and named Barossa Valley Floral Art Club. From June 1961 St. Petri Church Hall, Nuriootpa was the first venue for the club. Membership at this time was about 25. On March 17, 1967 the club transferred to the Tanunda Primary School Education ‘Nissan-hut’, still under the leadership of Mrs Liebich. As attendance continued to grow and space became a problem, the club moved to the Tanunda Institute Library. Membership was 45. In 1978 Mrs Liebich retired. Mrs Shirley Starick was entrusted with the position of ‘Leader’ and is an active member to this day. The club now meets on the second Monday of the month at 7 p.m. in the C.W.A. Hall, Tanunda. Members are invited to bring an arrangement which is then analysed. In addition a ‘bloom of the month’ is chosen and a trading table of products and plants adds extra interest. Guest speakers / demonstrators enrich meetings and encourage members to be creative with different mediums. Day workshops are conducted, usually by a member of the Floral Design Council of South Australia. Over the years the club has participated in the Barossa Valley Vintage Festival with a display in the C.W.A. Hall, Tanunda; Tabor Lutheran Church, Tanunda and this year in St. John’s Lutheran Church Hall, Tanunda.

Many outstanding exhibits have been produced for the pleasure of many people. Christmas is a special time of the year for the club, as well as end of year celebrations. Each member brings a floral arrangement in keeping with the Christmas season. This makes a wonderful display and the variety is amazing. Members visit many different places, nurseries, private gardens and floral displays. Over the years members have competed in numerous flower shows and local town shows with outstanding results. In recent years the club has assisted with a display at the Barossa Valley Rose and Flower Show. In 2009 the name of the club was changed to the Barossa Valley Floral Designer’s Club. Membership is currently 32.

During Vintage Festival, Mrs Heather Bartsch, owner of the Barossa Quilt and Craft Cottage, will run a display of over 50 quilts including vintage designs made by local quilters and tutors. The displays will be held at the Barossa Quilt and Craft Cottage, on the main road between Angaston and Nuriootpa, with a $2 entry fee to be donated to cancer research. Many of the blankets on display are inspired by famous English Textile Designer, William Morris, while others have drawn inspiration from the Barossa vintage. “We have at least five vintage grape pattern quilts on display this year, as well as many ‘jelly roll’ quilts,” said Mrs Bartsch. The quilts are made by a group of people who attend and run classes at the Barossa Quilt and Craft Cottage, and vary in age between 18 and 80. “A standout blanket on display will be the Adelaide Floral Sampler, by Michele Hill of Adelaide,” she said. E a c h d ay d u r i n g t h e Barossa Vintage Festival a $5 morning tea will be offered to further raise money for cancer research. “Come along, enjoy the beautiful display of quilts, enjoy a scone breakfast and help raise money for charity.”

Lyndoch Hill is the home to a fabulous restaurant, ensuite accommodation rooms set in a beautiful rose garden which provides a wonderful setting for functions, weddings or just a romantic dinner for two. “Our restaurant provides a wonderful setting for so many different occasions,” says Ms Mandy Creed, proprietor and General Manager. “We get a lot of birthday and anniversary celebrations and are receiving an increasing number of wedding enquiries now,” she said. The garden was opened by HM Queen Elizabeth in 2002. While recent years have not be kind to the garden since the original property was divided at the time Chateau Barossa, owned by the Thumm family and the Motel, Restaurant and grounds of Lyndoch Hill were established as a separate entity, things are changing. As part of a comprehensive programme, the current owners, Mark and Mandy Creed are determined to return the garden to its former glory and hold an ambition to establish the rose garden as a world class garden of great significance. This is work in progress. “I’m looking forward to the winter when we shall be transplanting roses and creating a special space for vegetables for the kitchen which will complement the supply from home and our herbs which are already established,” commented Mandy. The garden was developed by the late Mr Hermann Thumm with the help of world renowned rose grower and rose devotee, Mr David Rushton OAM, who was one of the principal architects behind the garden. A number of famous names in the world of roses were involved in the design and supply of roses to the Lyndoch Hill garden, such as Mr Brian Wagner and Rose Society official Mr Dean Stringer OAM. The garden has over 4km of walking tracks which weave amongst the different beds of roses, each with its own theme or type of rose. This is home to one of the world’s largest collections of rose varieties and offers a tranquil stopping off point for visitors to the property as well as the local community. The garden is open to the public and sections can be booked for special functions such as weddings and tea parties. Mandy is delighted by the interest in the roses amongst people in the local community.

Wine Workshops – increase your knowledge What is your knowledge of wine like? The Barossa Vintage Festival has introduced a new category into the 2011 Programme with a wine education focus. The assumption is often made that Festival attendees are seasoned drinkers with extensive knowledge of premium wines. This is not the case, and the workshops have been included to cater for people interested in increasing their wine knowledge. There will be 15 diverse workshops held at cellar doors throughout the region during the Barossa Vintage Festival, including:
fortified wines mature over 25 years of barrel maturation. Barrel samples available to taste are Muscat, Semillon, Frontignac and Grenache. LiebichWein will be also offering their traditional red varieties at ‘Legends of the Barrel’ at Barossa Valley Estate, Marananga, on April 28. The large range of youthful and premium aged blends will be available throughout Vintage Festival at LeibichWein Cellar Door offering the public a taste of the Leibich traditions started in 1919.

Geoff Schrapel, fifth generation grape grower and winemaker, will lead Bethany Wines’ ‘Old Vines, Great Wines’ workshop which will explore some of the family’s old, treasured vines. The Schrapel Family Vineyards date back to 1852 and the original

plantings included Shiraz, Grenache and Pedro Ximinez, varieties which can still be found amongst the vineyards today. The workshop will start off with a tour of the vineyards. Geoff will explain how to nurture old vines so that they produce exceptional fruit year after year, and how they differ from younger vines. One of the varieties is Pedro Ximinez, once a mainstay in Barossa vineyards in the time where the making of fortified wines predominated. When table wines overtook fortifieds in popularity most grape growers pulled out their plantings of Pedro, but Bethany’s remain and can be found in the luscious Bethany Old Quarry Fronti. After the tour, return to Bethany Wines’ cellar door to taste a selection of wines to test the theory, ‘old vines, great wines’. Bookings appreciated.
Jane Place Market It is with great excitement that the members of the Soroptimist International Club of Barossa Valley await their new community event during the Vintage Festival. The Jane Place Market is being held at the new Harvest Centre at the Tanunda Lutheran School, corner of Jane Place and Maria Street. Old fashioned family fun at Tanunda Town Day roving street theatre performances at 12.30 p.m. and 2.30 p.m. featuring a very naughty Butcher, Baker and a Candlestick Maker. Special guests include Town Crier Tom Benney, with his wife, ‘Honorary Escort Town Crier’, Daphne Benney and their Pug Dog, ‘Australian Champion Kangala Natalie No-Nickers’, all dressed in their period Town Crier regalia. There’s something for everyone, including grape treading, old time storytelling, horse drawn carriage rides, historical displays and demonstrations, barrel making, arts, crafts, regional food and of course Barossa wine by the glass. Children will love the animals, bouncy castle or having their face painted. Stroll through the stalls to hunt out a bargain or pick up some community grown, market fresh produce. Great news for families is that many of the children’s activities are free thanks to generous community and corporate sponsorship. There will be ‘Face The Art’ face painting, free pony rides, carousel rides for the little ones and a free bouncy castle. Hosted by the locals who welcome you to their town of Tanunda, the ‘Heritage Heart of the Barossa’, it all happens in Murray Street, Tanunda on April 28, from 11 a.m. - 3.30 p.m.

A ‘Back to Pioneer Days’ theme will be highlighted at Tanunda Town Day. There will be a host of entertainment and activities happening in the main street with brass bands, a pioneer bush band, roving entertainment, horse drawn carriages rides, pony rides, old fashioned amusements, face painting, storytelling, grape treading, barrel making, spinning, weaving, wood crafts, art, heritage food and a wine village! An absurd roving street show, harking back to the ‘olde world’ styles of absurd and commedia performances, is scheduled as special guests on the day to promise even more mayhem amid the fun! ‘Three Men in a Tub’ features an hilarious Butcher, a Baker and a Candlestick Maker in search of a place for their bathing rituals. They will trudge along the street with their barrel-styled bath tub, surprising audiences with their washing, bathing and general buffoonery. It’s a ride into the ridiculous world of the absurd with timeless and chaotic rituals! A new Tinker Shed exhibit is a joint project between Barossa Village Inc. and
The Lions Club of Barossa Valley Inc. It is a unique project which provides a functional workshop to give people a place to make, create and share their expertise. Tanunda Primary School have a special stall on the day where children will be able to buy a tasty scarecrow

Tanunda goes back to the ‘good old days’ at their Town Day, where the townsfolk invite you to join them in the main street (straight after the traditional ‘Ziegenmarkt’ in Goat Square) for a community celebration as part of the Barossa Vintage Festival. The main street will be closed to traffic from around 9.30 a.m. with an official event start time of 11 a.m. The Nuriootpa Town Band will lead the crowds from Goat Square back into Murray Street, when the street will then be filled with entertainment for all ages. The popular ‘Lasseters Gold’ folk band will be playing in the vicinity of the Tanunda Hotel with traditional Aussie bush music, while John Francis will play at the opposite end of the street near the Homburg lawns. Enjoy the comedy of ‘Heritage Hotspots’ at 1 p.m. and the madcap ‘Three Men In A Tub’ with

Barossa Vintage Festival Parade
2009 Parade
Pack a picnic and deck chair for the 2011 Barossa Vintage Festival Parade, and prepare to be entertained! This year’s line up is sure to be talked about for years to come with a creative and entertaining collection of floats registered to participate. Expect to see the usual rivalry between the town floats and don’t be surprised if you find yourself enjoying a good belly laugh or two with the popular humorous and entertaining floats. This year the parade route is being reversed to run from Tanunda to Nuriootpa. The Barossa Brunch (Nuriootpa Town Day) celebrations will provide family-based entertainment at the conclusion of the parade with free face painting, magicians, bands and dance groups and tantalizing food and wine stalls. There will also be a performance by Heritage Hotspots. As a treasured tradition of the Festival it seems only fitting that the Co-op Store, another Barossa icon, is sponsoring this colourful and lively pageant. “The parade has been running since 1947 and is the single most popular part of the bi-ennial Festival because it gives families and visitors the chance to have some free fun, said Mr David McArthur, Co-op Store C.E.O. With over 1,200 participants and thousands of spectators, start thinking now about your prime position along the route and make a day of it.

Nuriootpa Town Day / Barossa Brunch Excited about Nuriootpa Town Day and the Barossa Brunch are committee members, Robin Warnest, Bev Mewett, Geraldene Schmidt and Andrea White. Absent: Fred den Hartog, Steven Angel, Mandy Talbot and mentor, Bill Biscoe (Barossa Vintage Festival Committee Chairman).
Come and have a Schlück with us!
Nuriootpa Town Day / Barossa Brunch on April 30 is fast approaching and their small committee is working tirelessly to make this year’s Town Day bigger and better than ever before. The event will run in Murray Street between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Arrive early with your chairs to find your spot to watch the Vintage Festival Parade pass through and finish in the town. Expect lots of fun and entertainment for all ages, before and after the Parade. There will be many free activities, for children in particular. These include face painting, crazy hair, an animal nursery, an opportunity to see some of Australia’s special creatures and reptiles up close, cupcake decorating, a climbing wall, Punch and Judy, a ventriloquist, circus acts and much, much more. Our very popular Groovy Grape Road is back again, but only before the Parade, so children need to be there early to get their treats. Thanks to the generous assistance of the Co-op Store there will be a new, free Lucky Dip. Find your entry form in “The Leader”, fill it in then drop it in the box in Toyworld between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. on the day of the event. The lucky winner will be drawn at 3 p.m. and will walk away with a
$200 Co-op Voucher, proudly sponsored by the Co-op Store and the committee. You won’t be left hungry as there will be great coffee, lots of tantalising food from local traders as well as speciality stalls and, of course, it wouldn’t be the Barossa without a nice glass of local wine. Sit on Coulthard Lawns, enjoy coffee and a bite to eat, live music from local youth band ‘Slick Arnold’ and the children can enjoy the activities there for them. Remember to walk up and down the whole street, soaking up the community atmosphere, listening to wonderful live music, buying the items on offer from a wide range of stalls and enjoying all the free entertainment and activities – some local, some from other parts of the State – will be available for you and your family. Nuriootpa Town Day / Barossa Brunch on April 30 will be a family friendly fun day, so mark the date on the calendar and make sure you don’t miss out on what has become one of the most popular events in the Festival. Organisers look forward to seeing you there!
As the Barossa prizes its old growth vines, so Barossa Village nurtures and cares for the region’s frail and elderly during their twilight years.

Sail Thru’ the Seasons at Strait Gate Light Pass (or Noah’s Ark Mark II) Yes we have had more than our share of rain in the Barossa this year, but a boat on the front lawn of Strait Gate Lutheran Church at Light Pass? Really! No, this is not Noah’s Ark Mark II; this is part of the Strait Gate congregation’s Sail Thru’ the Seasons display. The boat on Strait Gate’s strangely blue front lawn is a reminder of the ancient symbol of the church as a ship sailing through the chaotic seas of a world full of trouble, protecting her passengers.
After you have examined this symbol of the church, enter the Strait Gate church doors and sail through the special times (seasons) of the ‘Church Year’... from the expectation of Christ’s original arrival and final return during Advent and the celebration of his birth at Christmas to the austerity of Lent and the emotional roller coaster of death, burial and resurrection of Holy Week. Experience the Spirit of Pentecost and the birth of the church, the mystery of the
Trinity and other important ‘seasonal’ events. Strait Gate’s Sail Thru’ the Seasons is certainly an experience that should not be missed. Once you have sailed through the seasons check out the porcelain display and enjoy a typical Barossa morning or afternoon tea in the Strait Gate Hall. Strait Gate’s celebrations begin with the Easter Sunday service with Holy Communion at 10.30am. The Sail Thru’ the Seasons display will be launched at

10 a.m. on April 26. At 1 p.m. on April 29 the Light Pass Combined Choir will perform a recital and the celebrations also include a Harvest Thanksgiving Service at 10.30 a.m. on May 1 where all are invited to give thanks to God for the harvest and other material gifts that he has given us. The service will include a general blessing of the material gifts God has given to all those who are present. Following the service there will be a morning tea.

Barossa’s rich cultural heritage to be showcased and shared Heritage Hotspots performances occur daily throughout the Festival and provide a wonderful, and funny insight into days gone by in the Barossa.
In 2011 Otto and Frieda Burgemeister take us on a journey through the prosperous post-war years of the 1950’s. The Hotspots crew will take us through the introduction
of telephones, school days, buying a family car, playing in the local brass band and the switch from trusted Clydesdales to tractors. Other heritage based
events taking place during the Barossa Vintage Festival include Bethany – Step Back in Time, Rosies Farm, the Doddridge Blacksmith Shop and Luhrs Cottage.

Kidman Trail gets poetic for Vintage Festival The Kidman Trail will be holding the Trot, Treadle, Tramp and Tucker event, including a Pub Wall Scrawl for the Barossa Vintage Festival. The Pub Wall Scrawl is an informal poetry competition where poems will be written on the walls of the Stockwell Hotel, and judged by the lunchtime patrons. The Kidman Trail is a multi-use horse riding, cycling and walking trail that traverses 269 kms of roadsides, forest tracks, private land and unmade road reserves with trail markers indicating the route. Proudly named after Sir Sidney Kidman, a prominent local pastoralist and horse breeder; Kidman was a pioneer of his time with unparalleled forethought in business and interminable community spirit. The Kidman Trail provides a scenic trail that highlights the natural beauty, cultural history and major points of interest along the Mount Lofty Ranges. So come along and ride, walk or cycle to the Stockwell Hotel and relax with a gourmet barbecue lunch.

Inaugural Barossa Vintage Festival Cup
Who will win?
Sport is such an important part of Barossa life, and traditional football and netball rivalry will be showcased and celebrated during the Barossa Vintage Festival with the introduction of the Barossa Vintage Festival Cup. The inaugural Barossa Vintage Festival Cup will be played at Nuriootpa Oval on May 1 between Nuriootpa and Tanunda. The Cup will be played every two years to coincide with the Barossa Vintage Festival, and games will rotate between the Angaston, Nuriootpa and Tanunda teams. Football and netball are a weekend tradition in the Barossa with a history as rich and colourful as that of the Barossa Vintage Festival itself. Don’t be fooled into thinking that this will be a ‘fun’ game staged for the Festival – this is a serious game!
The Barossa Vintage Festival is excited to include the Cup into the official Vintage Festival programme of activities. “The Barossa Vintage Festival is about celebrating our culture and traditions and what better way to do this than include football and netball. “The addition of the Cup adds a new dimension to the Festival, embraces the local community and adds to the programme of activities on offer,” said Ms Samantha Foreman, Festival Manager. The game, presented by the Barossa, Light & Gawler Football Association, will be complemented with food and wine. Come along, join the fun, bring the family and enjoy a Barossa tradition. A full programme of games will be played throughout the day.
