ecret doors are everywhere in children’s books, from the wardrobe that leads to Narnia to the gate that opens onto the Secret Garden. In many ways, these doors are an image for children’s literature itself, and the worlds it can open in the minds of young readers. But for some children, the door is resolutely locked. This may be because of dyslexia, visual issues, a lack of experience of books or reading, or other considerations such as increasing competition for time and attention from consoles and other devices. But that is to assume the ‘issue’ lies with the children themselves, and we don’t think that’s entirely fair. Sometimes, we believe, the books can be to blame. All children, and especially those with particular access requirements, can benefit from book design that attends to accessibility. That means, for example, type that doesn’t use the same character for a lower case L and an upper case i. Generous spacing is supportive, as is a good number of words per line. Heavier paper can help eliminate shadows from

the other side of the page while dark or busy backgrounds can set kids up for failure. We believe in thinking about children’s eyes and minds, and making reading a more comfortable experience for anyone. And for around 20 per cent of the population, the tweaks we make can be the key in that locked door that – at last – turns to admit access to the world of reading. A recent YouGov study contrasted the ‘good news’ that around half of 8-12s read regularly for pleasure with the ‘bad news’ that many fewer teens do. We don’t think it’s good news that half of all children don’t read for pleasure. And so, please do join us as we get out there and fly the flag for superreadable books, for short books and for illustrated books. Let’s see – if we make a little effort from our side – if we can’t make a dent in those numbers. Here’s to six months of more books more children can read!
