Black History Month Black history month is very important to me because I know the importance behind our past. This is not being stressed enough to our younger generation. They do not know the struggles that their ancestors had to go through to get them where they are today. Growing up in that time period I can only begin to imagine the hurt that they felt being disliked from the color of their skin. Being judged due to what someone else did questioning themselves “Why am I being held accountable for someone else’s mistakes”? When I was growing up the stories of my ancestors and different leaders I was taught about daily making sure that I knew what they had been through and let me know how I am able to have the freedom that I have today. When I think of black history month I think of Marin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X, Roberta Clemente, and Harriet Tubman for all the things that they did they were highly respected for the things that they believed in and carried them out for us. Martin Luther King Jr. became a civil rights leader very early in his career he knew that there was a message that he wanted to get out to the entire human race so he did whatever he had to do to reach every living soul. In my opinion, he is the reason why we are able to interact with different races his speech “I Have a Dream” is very much the cause of that. In everything that he did he believed that there should be no violence. Malcolm X was an African-American Muslim minister and human rights activist. His follower knew him as a courageous advocate for the rights of blacks. He was not afraid to inflict violence on the ones that he believed harmed his family as he was growing up. Years later he was pointed in a different direction of doing things that is when he broke away from the nation of Islam. In later years, he apologized for the things that he did when it came to racism and wanted to work with civil rights leaders. Roberto Clemente was an exceptional baseball player one of the first Latino players. He was a committed humanitarian who challenged racial discrimination that he was faced with when he came to the United States something that he had never experienced. Clemente used his fame to talk about human rights and his dream to help underprivileged youth in Puerto Rico. He was more than a baseball player he channeled his fame into a larger mission of helping people and breaking racial barriers. Harriet Tubman was born into slavery and she would eventually escape. After she escaped she would make several trips back so that she was able to help many of the other slaves get away from the slave owners so they can have freedom that they never knew that they would have. They would have spirituals they spoke deep to the slaves they were informational letting the other know what was going on, I believe that these spoke to them their soul. When I listen to hip hop I get a message from it a sense of freedom appreciating all the things that the leaders did for us so that we are able to listen and interact with different people of different races.
