FROM THE EDITOR

elcome to the latest edition of The Barrister Magazine. It’s hard to believe that it’s nearly Spring already, where is 2020 going to?

In this edition, we have a fantastic interview with the former Leinster and Ireland rugby player Jamie Heaslip where he discusses his career, his ambassador role with Land Rover, life after Rugby and what the future holds. It’s a rather interesting feature to read and we applaud the Kildare man for his blatant honesty throughout the interview, it was great to have had the opportunity to talk to him.

Our fashion section looks at the art of fine tailoring with great clothing coming from shops including Louis Copeland, Joseph Martin Bespoke Tailor and Jim Markey Mans Shop.

A smile is the prettiest thing you can wear and further on in this edition of the magazine, you will see our interview with Mary Flanagan who is the Irish representative of the Kreativ Clinic

of the Kreativ Dental Clinic in Budapest. “The clinic itself is a relaxing environment,” said Mary Flanagan. “The main waiting rooms have aquariums which are very calming to watch, while each of the chairs have iPads installed to keep visitors entertained. There is also a Sky Café and terrace where patients can sit out in the fresh air with a hot drink,’’ continued Ms Flanagan. If cars are of interest to you, we have reviewed the Ferrari Roma on page 35. The latest coupé from Maranello features harmonious proportions and elegantly balanced volumes which are very much in line with Ferrari’s front-engined grand touring tradition. Timeless and sublimely refined, from a technical point of view the Ferrari Roma introduces a series of unparalleled features that put it at the top of its segment in terms of performance and driving enjoyment. These include most notably a new power train with 8-speed gearbox, the introduction of the five-position manettino for the first time on a Ferrari grand tourer, and a best-inclass power/ weight ratio. All of which make the Ferrari Roma the most powerful and fun to drive mid-front-engined V8 2+ in Ferrari history. With summer fast approaching, we take a look at some dream holiday destinations in places such as New Zealand, Tanzania and Thailand. If cuisine with a French twist is what you are after, you will enjoy reading about the newly opened The World Gate Restaurant in County Louth. We would also like to say a very big thank you to our advertisers including Caragh Nurseries, Inver Energy, Dalkey Podiatry Clinic, Dentum, Ballymaloe House and MB Construction. Your support is much appreciated. We hope you enjoy reading through the latest edition of The Barrister Magazine.

MENS TAILORS

the

Art fine Tailoring of

W

hen we picture a man in a suit, we see James Bond in his black tuxedo in Goldfinger or Don Draper sporting a grey suit during a sales pitch in Mad Men. Wearing a suit is art, as it can be worn in so many ways, so many different colours, according to the latest styles and fashion. It’s not as impressionistical as art but wearing a suit can be seen as art, as you definitely will look like a true masterpiece, or an individualistic painting, that people gather around, trying to understand the meaning behind the style. Once the uniform of power solely reserved for top-tier finance coterie and the likes, tailoring has transformed in the last decade, taking on an open-minded approach and in doing so, inspiring a new audience – and workforce – to embrace the structured suiting staple. Whether as a result of the dawn of “Mad Men” back in 2007 or because of the changing nature of the style-conscious consumer, suits in all shapes and guises are now a prerequisite for the modern man’s wardrobe. A commanding look and the original marker of corporate business, the pinstripe suit has been a steadfast in menswear ever since it first held sway as a banking uniform in the 19th century. From then it has become an icon in its own right, adorned by prominent figures including Cary Grant, Clark Gable and Winston Churchill. The knowledge and art of cutting and sewing cloth, constructing clothes from a pattern, developed over time in Europe between the 12th and 14th centuries. The first reference in the Oxford Dictionary for the word ‘tailor’ was in the year 1297. The Middle Ages had the notion that clothing is just a means of concealing the body however in the Renaissance came the expression of ones self through clothing. That was the beginning of fashion in Europe where all clothing was custom made. Not just tailoring but the art of tailoring was born. As towns became great cities, and then states, to finally empires of power, fashion always followed. First Italy, Spain and France became the centre for fashion. In the middle of the 17th century men began to give up the fancy and overly outrageous wardrobes that had been a staple of their wardrobe since the 16th century, and now began to wear coats, vests, and breeches, the three components we can begin to identify as modern dress today.

“A man in a well tailored suit will always shine brighter than a guy in an off-the-rack suit.” Michael Kors

“Elegance is not standing out, but being remembered.” Giorgio Armani A CLASSIC REMADE The ultimate in elegance, a three-piece suit is celebrated the world over for its sophistication and versatility. Prevalent since the 1900s when the new century also introduced new tailoring, the three-piece has remained steadfast as a flattering outfit for men as well as its flamboyance (think F Scott Fitzgerald’s “Gatsby” or the uniform of Don Corleone in “The Godfather).

A perfect fit for the office where a suit isn’t required, a knit jumper worn in the place of a shirt dials down a tailored ensemble enough to not stick out in a room full of denim and casual shirts, but it does ensure you take your role seriously – even if you’re still a few rungs away from the top of the ladder. Remember: it’s about dressing for the job you want, not the one you have.

FROM DAY TO NIGHT While in time past the idea of dressing down a suit would be highly frowned upon, both fashion and the office have moved on – rapidly. To borrow a line from Hardy Amies: “A man should look as if he had bought his clothes with intelligence, put them on with care and then forgotten all about them.”

HIGH-CLASS HERO Much like its navy counterpart, the grey suit is a failsafe option for modern workwear. Understated, versatile and irrevocably classic, its enduring appeal lies in its ability to act as a canvas, allowing the wearer to play with shirt styles and patterns and accessories – ties, pocket squares – to enhance and personalise it.

TAKING IT DOWN A NOTCH The smart-casual dress code doesn’t lend itself as easily to tailoring, simply because a look that incorporates some element of a suit will always err more on the side of formal. But then, you don’t don a suit jacket or trousers to look casual.

IT’S ALL IN THE DETAIL If you really want to shine when giving a presentation, pay heed to this. Tailoring is just as much about the accessories as it is the two-piece suit. Consider them the finishing touches that add a refined flourish to your attire; it’s in the details after all.

10

ALWAYS LEAVE THE LAST BUTTON UNDONE This is one rule that all tailors, fashion bloggers, gentlemen and style-gurus agree on. Whether your suit has two or three buttons, you should always, we emphasise, always leave the last one unbuttoned. Suits nowadays are designed to be worn with the last button unbuttoned. Fastening the final button can ruin your look, no matter how good your suit is tailored, or what material it is made of. If you fasten the final button makes your perfectly fitted suit King Edward VII (the “inventor” of this trend). Apparently, King Edward grew so rotund that he was unable to fasten the bottom button of his waistcoat and jacket. To not offend the king, those associated with him started doing the same. The custom then gradually spread the world round (as England was still largely an imperial power with great influence across the globe). COLLAR GAPS A very good and clear sign of an ill-fitting suit, is where you can see an obvious gap between the edge of the collar and the lapels of the suit. No, it’s not clear to everyone when there is a tiny collar gap, but now you’ve read this article, and other people before you, you (and they) will know, how it distracts from your overall look. Don’t make that mistake. THY BELT SHALL MATCH THY SHOES Always, yes, really – always match the colour of your shoes with the colour of your belt. It’s one of the very first rules of suit wearing. You may have heard it from your dad, who got it told from his dad – a rule that has been passed on over decades (or should have been). A colour mismatch is a definite faux pas at a formal occasion, but you might just get away with a brighter coloured belt for a more casual occasion. UNBUTTON WHEN SITTING For the regular suit-wearers among you this rule has probably become more of a reflex already, but if you’re new to the world of suit-wearing (the bespoke ones, not the off-the-rack suit mess in your local stores), this is an important rule to follow. Keeping the suit buttoned up when you’re sat down creates stresses on the fabric in places and directions that it’s not built to withstand.

“I like to dress up in a tailored suit from time to time, and there’s a tailor I go to in Naples who’s fantastic. But if I told anyone his name, I’d have to kill them.” Hugh Jackman

“If you can’t be better than your competition, just dress better.” Anna Wintour

Fashionista’s today do not want to settle for a designer garment label made for a runway sized model. They prefer clothes that create perfect illusions, and cuts that are customized to make them look slimmer, taller, and curvier. Many young customers in their late 20’s and 30’s are exploring the custom made side of fashion and wish to invest money in a garment that is personalized and can be worn for a long time. There is no way that a single size fits all, and looks great either. Readymade garments are no more the only choice for many, with bespoke tailoring being offered without costing a bomb. Customers do not want to take “we don’t have your size” for an answer and have become more demanding than ever. Bespoke clothing, with the ideal fit and skillful tailoring techniques is winning hearts and has carved a niche for itself within the fashion industry.

It seems like the Art of Tailoring might make a come back.

DERMOT BANNON

D

ermot Bannon is one of the best known Architects in Ireland and is best known to the Irish nation for his show ‘Room to Improve,’ which is one of the most talked about programmes on the nations lips after it airs on Sunday nights over a six week period.

During the build, Mr Bannon made sure to account for two charging points in his driveway as he is switching over to a Volvo hybrid this summer. “I’m eliminating fossil fuels from the house and we’re taking a G rated house right up to an A rating; there is going to be no gas or oil in the house, there will be a heat pump and it is going to be super highly insulated because I’m determined to have a house where you can walk around in your tee shirt in December as well as having a house that costs very little to run,’’ he explained.

Mr Bannon has also recently been to Sweden, Melbourne and Sydney for his show ‘Dermot Bannon’s Incredible Homes,’ which garnered a lot of attention when it aired in February.

“I’ve been driving a Volvo for a few years now and they asked me recently would I like to test drive one of the plug in hybrids and even though I was a bit dubious (because I didn’t think I would get the range out of it) of taking it for a while, the car really surprised me in a lot of ways!

As well as running a very busy architectural practice, being a husband and Dad to three young children, he is currently busy working on his new home in Drumcondra but despite all this Dermot very kindly took time out of his busy schedule to talk to this publication.

“The car changed the way I drove; there is a button with ‘b,’ written on it so basically every time we brake or the car slows down we waste that energy normally when we’re driving but with this car, that energy goes back to the engine and then you can plug the car in.

“Renovating my own home is a lot more pressure than I thought it was going to be, I was actually looking forward to the whole process and when we bought the house and we were applying for Planning Permission I got really excited about doing it and I was pinching myself at the thoughts of getting to do this to our own house,’’ said Dermot Bannon.

“Generally, for day to day use you get a 40KM range out of it and you have a petrol engine as well. In a day you probably wouldn’t do more than 40KM between school runs and so forth so essentially you can charge the car at night,’’ enthused Mr Bannon.

“Now that I’m in the middle of it, it’s incredibly stressful because you know every little detail there is to the project. Sometimes you might let things go on a regular job because it doesn’t really matter and you can’t see it but when it comes to your own home, you can’t un-see these things and I don’t want to be looking at this little detail for the rest of my life so that’s why I’m trying to iron out a lot of these things. “Most of the stress is caused by making sure that you have thought of every little thing. It’s absolutely melting my head at the moment! You want to put in the best of what you can afford when it comes to the house. I don’t think I will be doing anything differently to my own house than I would when it comes to the houses on ‘Room to Improve,’ the finishes won’t be very expensive; I would like some nice finishes,’’ he enthused. “I’ve fairly simple taste and I want this house to be minimal but there are certain things that I would like to put in this house such as a brass splashback,’’ added Mr Bannon. “I’m at the stage where I wish the house was done now and we could just move into it,’’ revealed Dermot.

17

“I put two charging points into our front garden, whether or not we will have two electric cars I don’t know but the aim would be to have two electric cars in the next four to five years because they won’t be making fossil fuel cars after 2030. If you are future proofing your house and you are trying to make it as close to carbon neutral as possible then you should be thinking about your car especially if you are living in the city,’’ added Dermot. “I know that I will have to do a country run in the car and for that I will have to use petrol but to make my life easier, I put the charging points in. It also makes total sense to put the charging points at your house as there is a grant available for it as well. “I loved driving around in this car, more so because it really changed my driving patterns and I really started to think about how you’re using your fuel. I drive slower now and I try not to use the brake as much. When you see how much energy you waste in speeding up too quickly and braking too quickly instead of trying to keep the car at a slow, regular pace it makes you a more responsible driver. The Volvo hybrid is a lovely car to drive,’’ he stated. In terms of the reaction to ‘Dermot Bannon’s Incredible Homes,’? “We picked the houses because they were amazing properties in

We got to see amazing houses and because I was doing the television show it got me access to places that you generally wouldn’t get access to. “The trip to Sweden was an eye-opening one because it showed us how responsible they are. “They have these luxurious houses with two bathrooms, they haven’t got a clatter of them. The people all live in apartments in the city during the winter and during the summer they head off and live in their summer houses so Sweden was fascinating and it was the trip that I learnt the most from despite it being the closest to home,’’ said Mr Bannon.

amazing locations. It was a wonderful trip and I still pinch myself every time I think about it. I think the houses in Melbourne were better; the Sydney trip was great and everyone has an affiliation with Sydney but the houses in Melbourne were cooler. It was my first time in Australia. When you see how much energy you waste in speeding up too quickly and braking too quickly instead of trying to keep the car at a slow, regular pace it makes you a more responsible driver. The Volvo hybrid is a lovely car to drive,’’ he stated.

As to ‘Room to Improve,’ and problematic clients? “I’m hoping for more of the same with the show because I think if it isn’t broke, then don’t fix it! We have six new projects and six brand new couples. We have houses in fantastic locations all over Ireland and they are all very different builds to what we have done before. I was excited working on them so I hope you guys are excited watching the show,’’ explained Dermot. “I pick my battles and I do get frustrated with the clients but I wouldn’t give up with them. I would email them in the middle of the night and I would ring them, if they are married I would talk to the husband or wife and try to get them to not give up on an idea I’ve put forward and then there are other times when you have to say right I’m done here if you’ve really fought a battle,’’ concluded Dermot Bannon.

In terms of the reaction to ‘Dermot Bannon’s Incredible Homes,’? “We picked the houses because they were amazing properties in amazing locations. It was a wonderful trip and I still pinch myself every time I think about it. I think the houses in Melbourne were better; the Sydney trip was great and everyone has an affiliation with Sydney but the houses in Melbourne were cooler. It was my first time in Australia.

Red brick Beauty in Belfast

An extensive refurbishment to a Victorian dwelling

N

umber 50 is a late nineteenth century Victorian dwelling in Belfast. The existing house is a double bay detached property, faced in red brick and located within the designated ‘Malone Park Conservation Area.’

The property was in a state of great disrepair after lying vacant for a number of years, requiring extensive refurbishment to bring it to an acceptable living standard. Here Steven Moon of McGarry-Moon Architects talks to us about this fabulous property. “Together with the conservation and necessary upgrading of the dwelling, the client wished to create a larger home that was respectful to the unique history of the area, while fulfilling their desires and lifestyle aspirations,’’ explained Steven Moon. “Retaining the Victorian dwelling as the focal point, the completed scheme manifests itself as two sculptural brick elements connected to the Victorian fabric with a double height glazed zone designed to capture natural light deep into the center of the property, where it is then dispersed through the plan by means of sectional manipulation. “This has resulted in the creation of an interesting, stimulating and respectful dialogue between the two distinct architectural languages of the contemporary and the Victorian. The house has been fully restored and can again be appreciated for its architectural interest, whilst now also providing a five bedroom family home,’’ he added.

“The form of the new build elements establish a relationship with the Victorian dwelling, garden, neighboring properties and adjacent boundaries as well as the wider conservation area. The arrangement of the new elements allows no overlooking or overshadowing issues to arise thus having no detrimental effect on the surrounding area or neighboring properties,’’ enthused Steven. The property was designed by Steven Moon and Jessica McGarry. McGarry-Moon Architects is a design-led rural practice located outside Kilrea, Northern Ireland. As a young dynamic practice, projects are seen as an opportunity to create beautiful, lasting and enriching architecture. Operating across Ireland and internationally, they design a mix of public and private contemporary buildings. Their design process fuses new technologies with older building techniques, in order to create an architecture for the 21st century that adopts the spirit of the vernacular. Over the past ten years McGarry-Moon Architects have been recipients of six RIBA awards and three RSUA awards, an RIAI award and were shortlisted for the prestigious RIBA Stephen Lawrence Prize 2017 for their architecture office ‘Fallahogey Studio.’ “Before we began working on the project the house was falling to pieces, people had broken in and ripped pipes out of it so there was water leaking throughout the house. The clients brief was quite open and she was quite easy to work for. The house is now over insulated and ran off main stream gas and we put under floor heating throughout the old and new part of the house,’’ he added. “On the outside of the house we just re-pointed and stripped the roof and re-slated it. We also installed a roof light to incorporate as much light as possible into the house. The garden is North facing which isn’t ideal when you have massive mature trees in the garden,’’ said Stephen. As to any problems encountered throughout the project? “We used two different contractors for this project and they worked well. The glazing was rather tricky, it was problematic and it took some time to get the glazing finished so that delayed the project slightly. It was a long enough, tricky and complex project but it was an enjoyable one to work on.

“All of the ceilings and the plaster was destroyed due to water damage, the old house had to be gutted and if the house was renovated seven or eight years earlier there probably wouldn’t have been as much work to do to the house,’’ added Mr Moon. “It took 12 months for planning permission to come through for this house. It takes typically three months to 12 months for planning permission to be granted unlike in southern Ireland and mainland United Kingdom where you would be granted it within five to eight weeks.” As to Mr Moon’s final thoughts on this house? “The home owner is extremely happy with the house and seeing how the old and new work together. It’s amazing to see what can be done to these houses. Making sure that you have the correct budget to do work on a house similar to this is imperative, most people have a brief that is bigger than their budget so you need to align the right amount of money to it, budgets always tend to run over and the longer they are in planning the higher the costs, building costs are getting more expensive by the day, ‘’ concluded Steven Moon.

020 looks as if it is going to be the year when we will see home owners giving their homes a comfortable look and taking inspiration from nature. Trends to decorate homes reign materials such as wood and vegetation so it will be bright decoration along with silvers and gold.

The common goal to decorate the houses will be full of ideas and cosy proposals for the use of textiles and ethnic details. In 2019 many people opted for an eco-friendly interior design incorporating many warm and natural elements. There will be an improved application of natural wood on doors, windows and furniture. More people will adopt the use of hand-made and recycled furniture and accessories as well as the wider use of natural stone materials. In comparison to previous years in which communicated environments were sought, this year will see designs opting otherwise. There will be an increase to look for divisions that grant greater privacy for each living space. We cannot deny that open spaces give the feeling of having a larger home but we must also acknowledge the fact that there are times when open plan living can diminish comfort. Each year colour trends change and this year is no different in that we will see cheerful and sober tonalities. Colours that are set to be quite popular this year include grey, pink, purple, green and blue. Wallpaper is one of the pawns to decorate the walls of your home and in 2020 wallpaper is set to feature designs of artistic touch, tropical prints and motifs that evoke nature. In terms of materials that are going to be a present force include pine, oak, mahogany or imitation wood. These are going to be especially popular when it comes to wood in housing structures such as columns or ceilings, in interior or exterior floors, wood furniture in all rooms, wood in decoration, wood in finishes and wood in doors and windows. Previously light wood was the star of the show but from this year on and for the foreseeable future, dark tones are going to be popular as they give the house decoration a greater elegance and a touch of luxury.

WHAT’S

catching

the eye for

2020

29

In addition to the wood in furniture, floors, ceilings and decorative accessories, the trend towards the natural is imposed on the decoration of 2021 and home owners will have the presence of wicker, jute and rattan in their interiors which will ensure that materials will provide a greater amount of textures to the decoration and will make them much more welcoming to our environments. Metal is going to bring great brightness and luminosity to the decoration of the different rooms of the house throughout this year. In addition to this, the metal material can be adapted to decorate any style of house such as; modern style, vintage style, minimalist style, eclectic style and classic style. Interior gardens can not be missing in the decoration of your home as you look for a space of relaxation and tranquillity. To accompany the interior garden, you can place a small chair or armchair which allows you to enjoy the stillness and beauty of your garden. 2020 is the year of taking ownership of your own space. Home owners are looking to add a personal touch to their home and there will be a change to interior decorations that show character and personality making interior design more of a DIY interior design option. Home owners want exactly what they have in their head so a quick and easy way to put a stamp on your home is to create wallpapers or customise wallpapers with your favourite photograph collection; customised wallpaper can hold pictures of your children, travel memories or pets.

30

Rather than the usual square edge trends when it comes to furniture, there will be an increase in curve furniture (furniture with curved edges). We will see furniture such as cabinets, sofas and chairs biding farewell to the mid-century straight designs for a more rounded back and sides. This type of furniture will feature smooth materials of bright colours. It will also be easy to incorporate round back chairs into smaller room whilst keeping enough space. Design furniture will be a massive trend in interior design this year as there is a major shift from rigid and formal interior designs to maximum designs which do not have special rules for interior design. Rather than your standard couch in your living room, you can opt for something unusual like a couch or a lounge chair. Place the chairs around a table in the living room and it will make your home more welcoming as well as spacious. Layering up comforting cushions, throws, faux furs and knits will make any space instantly inviting as well as it being an approach that will take you through the remainder of winter and those spaces will be fashionably dressed for spring!

32

Extend your home special Interior design trends that you will find slowly disintegrating this year are as follows; neutral colours, single- use spaces, all white kitchens, the faux look, accent walls, neon lighting, singular design schemes and defined shapes. The Japanese and Scandinavian interior design style are quite minimalist, functional and simple with the function of both being referred to as Japandi style. The white colour of this interior trend dominates all environments, natural wood, materials and organic forms with all the influence of the great Nordic and Japanese designers of the 1950’s being its main characteristics is going to be another big trend over the next 12 to 18 months. As to interior trends that are set to blow interior design out of the water in 2021; sustainable modern design, naval colour trend (a darker blue colour will be the 2021 trend), light woods, statement pieces and natural elements.

Goodbye 1970’s, hello modern day!

“Simple and straightforward measures were implemented.”

C

onneely Wessels Architects is an architectural practice based in Kinsale, County Cork. Their practice aims to provide a responsive, imaginative and professional service, tailored to the aspirations of each of their clients, and to deliver quality results regardless of commission size or type as well as seeking to develop sustainable designs which fulfil the expectations of building users, address their physical and cultural context and allow effective solutions for procurement and construction. Their work includes all types of planning, design and their range of services extends from acting as consultants, providing strategic advice on development, regeneration and conservation, to providing full architectural services for building projects from inception to completion. They advise and enable clients at various stage of their projects from initial project definition and feasibility through to general estate and facilities management. They also offer clients the cost benefits, ease of management and synergies of a single point of contact for all construction services from project inception through to completion. In 2018 the practice were approached to re-organise and extend a 1970’s bungalow to take advantage of the stunning views over Charles Fort in Kinsale. The original dwelling was built as part of a development in Summercove entitled Haven Hill. “The bungalow was dated and required extensive refurbishment. A sun room, that was a later addition, was in poor condition, and blocked daylight to the kitchen. The layout also did not meet our clients’ needs for modern and open plan living, nor did it maximise the views,’’ said Architect Lizette Conneely of Conneely Wessels Architects. “A standard approach would have been to extend the existing building footprint to the back of the existing house, or even to extend upward, with a first floor footprint, to provide the additional footprint the brief required. “However, our innovative design solution was to extend the house to the front with a wrap around extension, to maximise the opportunity for stunning sea views from house. This inventive design approach also provided the dated bungalow, with a new frontage,’’ added Ms Conneely. The extension re-organises the house, placing the living spaces to the south taking advantage of the Harbour Estuary and Kinsale town views.

36

The design of the new wrap around extension, is conceived as a ‘framing’ or ‘viewing device’ that frames the panoramic view over Kinsale harbour and out over the Atlantic to the Bulman Rock. The views are framed through a series of fin walls that echo the angular em-battlements of the nearby Charles Fort. “The layout of the existing house was also improved, by reorganising the accommodation. The bedrooms are aligned in a bedroom block, with the master bedroom awarding sea views and views onto a private courtyard, that is sheltered from the elements,’’ enthused Lizette. “The kitchen, dining, living room and snug rooms are reorganised along the front of the house to maximise sea views with access to a sheltered terrace along its frontage. The kitchen, dining, living room are linked in an ‘enfilade,’ with large sliding doors. The open plan space can be subdivided, into discrete zones as family life dedicates to provide acoustic and visual privacy. “Apart from the innovative design solution of extending to the front of the house and providing the house with a new frontage, the building fabric was also improved to exceed current building regulations standard,” she added.

Extend your home special As to whether or not there were any problems encountered throughout the project? “The most challenging part of the transformation, was to set-out the fins during the construction stage, to insure that each view is framed precisely to maximise the stunning views,’’ enthused Miss Conneely. The elevation of fins, frame panoramic views over Kinsale harbour, acting as camera lens. The fins also serve to support the roof overhang and provide shelter to the terrace and solar shading. The architectural practices approach to innovative sustainability solutions on the project was to make substantial environmental benefits from a number of quite simple and straightforward measures to reduce resource consumption. These measures ranging from re-using as much as possible of the existing footprint of the original dwelling to reduce foundation works, high levels of insulation and exploitation of building mass through use of external insulated render system with air-to-water source heating, provision of heat recovery system, passive solar control, low energy controlled LED lighting and choice of sustainable building fabric materials and finishes. Conneely Wessels Architects believe in design excellence through carefully listening to their clients needs and goals, not by imposing their overall ideas onto your project. They are here to design a home that works perfectly for their clients and their family, not a project that will just look great in a portfolio. This can only be achieved by truly listening to what the client has to say, both positive and negative They adopt an approach of hold your hand throughout the entire design and construction process, taking clients step by step from developing the initial design through the final construction.

Throughout their unique process, they can design a home that meets their clients needs, lifestyle and budget, achieving successful results while eliminating the unnecessary headaches and possible projects that can typically arise during construction. Their design process commences with detailed site analysis that informs initial concept sketch designs. CWA develop several design options for discussion with their clients. They also utilise 3D computer models throughout the design phase to allow clients to visualise the clients new home better and therefore make more informed decisions. This provides the comfort of knowing exactly what their new home will look like, before starting construction, eliminating unnecessary change orders and saving you money. Through their professional experience and efficient design, they can help their clients maximise their investments by reducing the cost of construction, reducing energy consumption and potentially increasing the future resale value of their property. They can also streamline the construction process by assisting in the selection of qualified contractors. The practice works thoroughly throughout the design detailing phase to develop a set of accurate drawings and specifications based on the projects’ exact wants and needs. Their detailed tender and construction package preparation allows them to eliminate the change orders that typically increase cost of construction. They view the lifetime characteristics of the project with equal enthusiasms as the initial commission. The practice design buildings which are thoroughly worked out both inside and outside. Internal space will function for their intended use with their objective to exceed the high expectations of their clients and the people and families who will settle in the buildings that they design. Conneely Wessels Architects bring specific skills to the design process to achieve a quality, innovative and cost effective solution or our clients and these include: project leadership, effective communication, sustainable environment, extended skill sets and thought leadership. The floor was insulated and the floor build-up was finished with a polished concrete floor. Polished concrete is an ecofriendly floor finish solution that, combined with underfloor heating, provides a thermal mass that retains and radiates heat. It not only is an aesthetically pleasing finish that reflects light, but also a cost effective floor finish solution.

Simple and straightforward measures were implemented to improve the sustainability of the house such as installing an external insulation system, a heat recovery system including an air to water heat pump was fitted, a polished concrete floor with underfloor heating was introduced throughout the house and sustainable building fabric and materials were introduced includeed low energy controlled LED lighting throughout the entire home. As to Ms Conneely’s overall thoughts on the project? “Generally, the definition of an extension is considered as an add-on to the side or back of an existing dwelling. By extending the existing house to the front, we added value to the house, not only by adding additional space, light and maximising the views, but by providing the house with a completely new front façade,’’ said Lizette. “Internally, remodelling and re-imagining the interior layout, by creating flexible open plan living spaces that responds to modern family life has greatly improved the functionality of the home. The living spaces are now filled with light, maximising the sea views and extending to the front, has given the existing dwelling a completely new lease of life. “Externally, the introduction of fins frames the incredible views over Kinsale Harbour and Charles Fort, is very successful. The fins resembles the angular embattlements of the nearby Charles Fort, but also serve a functional purpose, i.e. supporting the roof overhand and providing solar shading to the South Facing windows,” she enthused. “The home owners are delighted with the transformation of their home. Not only does the new layout respond to their way of living, maximises the incredible views, but the improvement and upgrade of the existing building fabric to meet current building regulations, resulted in a much more sustainable home. This has reduced resource consumption and has made the house a much more comfortable and low maintenance to live in,” concluded Lizette Conneely.

A NEWYear A NEW DECADE,

A NEW Smile

Mary Flanagan, Irish Representative of Kreativ Dental Clinic Budapest

MAKE 2020 THE YEAR YOU ACHIEVE A HEALTHY SMILE AND EXPLORE A NEW CITY - VISIT KREATIV DENTAL CLINIC IN BUDAPEST

F

ew European cities can rival Budapest’s beautiful setting beside the River Danube. The Hungarian capital was even named the best destination in Europe in 2019, by travel website European Best Destinations. There is no doubt that Budapest, which was one two independent cities of Buda and Pest, has become a popular choice for European city breaks. Some of its best attractions (which are also perfect for photo opportunities!) include the Szécheny i Thermal Baths, Fisherman’s Bastion, Széchenyi Chain Bridge, Vintage Garden, and Jewish Quarter Street Art.

Dental tourism

Another reason for the city’s popularity is in part due to its dental tourism. Kreativ Dental Clinic is one of Europe’s leading and most advanced dental clinics. Awarded ‘International Dental Clinic of the Year 2018’ by medical travel publication The International Medical Travel Journal, the clinic has been welcoming international visitors, including Irish people, for over 15 years. During 2018, an average of 250 to 350 patients visited the clinic per month from the UK an Ireland. Some well-known Irish faces have also visited the clinic, including renowned stylist Cathy O’Connor. Based on the Pest side of the city, the clinic is dedicated to providing its patients with the highest quality of care, with saving of at least 60pc. The consultation and initial X-ray are free, while a full breakdown of the treatment cost will be provided, so there are no hidden charges. It is also possible to claim tax back, similar to visiting and Irish dentist. Irish representative of Kreativ Dental Clinic, Mary Flanagan, says, “Over the space of 10 years in Ireland, I had root canal treatments, crowns fitted which later fell out, and eight teeth extracted. I was told by an Irish dentist that my only option was dentures. Another told me getting work done would cost up to € 60,000. “ I had so many problems with dentists and my teeth over the years, until I was advised to visit Kreativ Dental by a retired Irish dentist. I ended up having eight implants and 26 porcelain crowns fitted at the much lower price-tag of €12,000, plus € 400 for my flights.”

Quality care

The clinic’s team consists of specialists in implantology, oral surgery, maxillo-facial surgeons, endodontology and periodontology, offering a suite of treatments which include dental implants, porcelain crowns, bridges, and more. Since the clinic’s inception, a second clinic called Kreativ Dental 2 opened its doors in 2015. Located beside the first clinic, it was build to help manage the high demand from patients worldwide. Now, Kreativ Dental is in the process of building a state-of-the-art hospital, the first-of-its-kind in Europe. This is where people who have had complex dental procedures and require general anaesthetic or sedation, can be treated by experts and take some time to recover - as with any medical procedure in a regular hospital. This unique service is set to open in early 2020.

40

Many people who travel to Kreativ Dental are initially extremely nervous, however all the dentists in the clinic are specially trained to deal with nervous patients. “All the dental specialists that have been there when Kreativ Dental opened in 2002, are still working there today, hence the expertise and quality. “The clinc itself is a relaxing environment,” adds Mary. “The main waiting rooms have aquariums, which are very calming to watch, shile each of the chairs have iPads installed to keep visitors entertained. There is also a Sky Café and terrace where patients can sit out in the fresh air with a hot drink.” It is very comforting for patients to know that Mary is on-hand at all times to answer queries and help put their minds at ease, being a former patient of Kreativ Dental herself. She understands patients’ needs and fears. Mary can also best advice clients on when and how to secure the best value flights to Budapest. “I organise free airport transfers, as well as booking the clinic appointments and hotel accomodation. You can arrange your own flights for whenever suits you best, however always check with me that there are available appointments in the clinic prior to booking your flights, as the clinic can be booked up 4-5 weeks in advance.” So, make it your resolution to plan a trip to Kreativ Dental Clinic in beautiful Budapest for 2020, and you will be sure to return ho smiling! General Manager of Hayfield Manor Hotel talks to us

42

TRAVEL

S

“It’s a lovely seclusion.”

ince its opening in 1996, Hayfield Manor 5 Star Hotel in Cork City has been recognised for providing a high quality product and exceptional service. This is reflected in the various awards with which Hayfield Manor has been honoured. The estate, in the heart of Cork city, was originally owned by the Musgrave family, the famous Cork merchants.

The current owners, the Scally Family, purchased the estate from the Musgrave family and established Cork’s first five star hotel. As a family owned and managed hotel, the personal yet professional service that is delivered has become synonymous with Hayfield Manor, and ensures guests enjoy their stay in Cork city. The General Manager of the hotel is Kerry man TJ Mulcahy. TJ’s passion for hospitality developed from working as a teenager in summer jobs in hotels throughout the picturesque town of Killarney. He completed his honours degree in Hotel Business Management that also included a one year apprenticeship at the five star Adare Manor Hotel & Resort. Following his studies, and with the prospect of learning more about our business, he moved to London in May 2000 to put all his good theory into practice. TJ decided to go large and his first role was Assistant Reception Manager at the Hilton London Metropole with 1060 bedrooms, followed by Front office Manager at the Novotel London West with 630 bedrooms. Mr Mulcahy joined the Red Carnation hotel (RCH) team in 2004, as Rooms Division Manager at their Montague on the Gardens hotel. He returned home to Ireland in 2007 to become Deputy General Manager at the five star Ashford Castle. TJ is delighted and honoured to lead the team at Hayfield Manor and support all our team members in the achievement of our ambition; to provide their guests with an experience beyond the best. “I’ve being in the role of General Manager of the hotel for three years. I’ve worked in the hotel business since I was 15 and I’m 43 now so I’ve done this for many years. I moved down to Cork in 2017 with my family and I took on this job,’’ said TJ Mulcahy. “My family ran a little guest house in Abbeyfield so this (the hotel business) is something that is in my blood. I’m very passionate about my work and I thoroughly enjoy my job and it is very rewarding and I am continuously working with people whether it be looking after my team or dealing with people from all over the world. You learn so much in college and then it is all about experiences you build up. “My normal day would entail arriving to work at 7am and going home at 8pm. In a day you are covering the morning, afternoon and evening service. It is a pretty intense job in terms of the dedication and commitment you need for the job. I’m responsible for the running of the property and there are about 150 team members working in the hotel. “The day flies by here and you are never bored; there is always something to do whether it be meetings to go to or team members to chat to. I’d describe my role as very active. I’ve a great team working alongside me and they are a great support to me,’’ added Mr Mulcahy.

“I’ve a great team.”

Moving on to the hotel, just what makes Hayfield Manor Hotel so exclusive? “There are 88 bedrooms in the hotel and we are the only five star hotel in Cork City so the expectations are always high when it comes to our visitors and guests. We also welcome many visitors to our restaurant on a daily basis. Afternoon tea is still rather popular here amongst our guests. We also have a beautiful spa and swimming area in the hotel,’’ he enthused. What is it about the hotel that attracts people to the hotel? “I think it is the luxury element of the hotel, the friendliness of the team and the welcome that guests get. First impressions are last impressions and our first impressions have to be spot on and by getting that right then hopefully people will spread the good work about the hotel as well as becoming repeat customers themselves,’’ explained TJ. “People come to the hotel for relaxation, we have a good reputation with our food and they come to the hotel to get away from every day life. We’re a 20 minute walk from Cork City and we are situated on three acres. It is so calm and tranquil where we are and it is like an oasis even though the city is on our door step. We have two lovely gardens that are surrounded by beautiful trees and it’s a lovely little seclusion,’’ continued Mr Mulcahy. In terms of common issues that may be encountered when it comes to running a hotel? “The hotel has 130 spaces in our car park and believe it or not parking can be an issue on the hotel grounds because if you have a table of five coming in for lunch that can mean five different cars and some days parking does be all over the place which can be frustrating for guests. Parking is a massive issue in Cork anyway but we are lucky that we have a public car park down the road from us as well if we ever need to use it. There is also a big expectation to deliver food and drink correctly and to the high standard you would expect to receive in a five star hotel,’’ revealed TJ. As to future plans? “We’re renovating 15 bedrooms at the moment and we renovated 20 bedrooms last year. We are creating a relaxation suite in our spa. Last year we completed work on our lobby and public area so we’re continuously investing back in to the business which makes me really happy,’’ concluded TJ Mulcahy.

he World Gate, is a door that is opened to a different culture; one of flavour and ambiance. With the expertise of a French Head Chef, The World Gate Restaurant wants to be a French restaurant first but also an experience to a different culture with a different

touch ! Different thematics will be offered during the year. All of the restaurants Dishes are made and prepared in their kitchen, offering a large diversity of meals for you to try something that little bit different. After years spent in luxury hotels & Restaurants, in France and abroad, Head Chef Thomas decided to come back to the root of the French cuisine using the wonders of Irish produce. Having met with a local fisherman and meat producers to cook simple, healthy and delicious dishes with his French touch. The staff at The World Gate Restaurant are very keen to push the fact that their customers are welcome to try or re-discover their French traditional dishes as well as their European dishes seasoned with fresh fishes, Irish meats and vegetables. Eating should be an experience shared amongst friends and that is why in this restaurant they take care over every meal they make to ensure that their visitors get the best out of their time there. From produce to plate, only the highest quality ingredients are used and it shows in each meal. The restaurant sources their ingredients from local producers whenever it is possible. Fish and seafood are coming from the port of Clogherhead, meat is coming from an Irish producer and their fresh vegetables and herbs come from Dunleer. Wine is imported directly through an Irish based company. “To become a Chef you have to be passionate about food and I love produce and people as well as giving pleasure to people through food and that is why I always wanted to work in an establishment with food,’’ said Thomas.

55

“12 years ago I was the Head Chef in two and three star Michelin Star restaurants and I moved to Ireland (to work) as the pressure was too much where I was working but I wanted to work in a friendly and healthy restaurant in Ireland that used local, healthy products as well as showing the Irish people French food step by step in a simple way,’’ he added. As to how Stan finds managing the restaurant? “This is a new way of life for me because I used to manage people for multi-national companies and now being in the restaurant industry is totally different so I need to care about the restaurant, to make sure that everything is in order, all our customers are happy and to make sure that each meal is right. It is a very complex job and I will need a couple of years to perfect it but I am being helped nicely by Thomas,’’ explained Stan. The restaurant opened in December 2019 and they are focusing on using high quality ingredients with the French touch. Currently they are preparing the restaurant for the summer time and good weather as well as creating their own ice-cream. “The local people are visiting the restaurant and they are coming back which is a good sign. We have started to have regular customers and we are fully booked on Friday’s and Saturday’s and the people seem to be enjoying trying out a different cuisine,’’ enthused Stan.

As to the differences they see between Irish and French cuisine? “The techniques are different, explained Thomas. In Ireland, you have really beautiful produce and I use produce from 10 kilometres around the restaurant. We have good quality produce in France as well. The cooking processes are different as well; in France we use many different sauces as well as using a slow type of cooking or by not over cooking, we have to adapt our ways of cooking to the Irish taste,’’ explained Thomas. “Our best seller in the restaurant at the moment is scallops with saffron cream which is a really enjoyable dish for the customer. Mussel soup is also popular,’’ he added. In terms of the future plans for the restaurant? “To have a Michelin Star. We have a great Chef with great recipes and the restaurant can welcome a lot of customers so we look forward to the future,’’ enthused Stan. JAZZES UP THE NEWEST AIR JORDAN XXXIV SAMSUNG GALAXY Z FLIP

WITH THREE OPULENT VERSIONS

The Unpacked 2020 show will be a huge showcase of what Samsung has in store for its consumers this year. Of course, it will be the stage to showcase its latest flagship smartphone lineup – the Galaxy S20 series – and other innovative products. Another handset model making its debut alongside the former is the Galaxy Z Flip. Caviar unleashes a big surprise ahead of the manufacturer with the Joker & Harley Quinn edition along with two other special edition variants. Even though the final technical specifications are not yet available, Caviar gives consumers an insight into the overall design of the Galaxy Z flip. The Joker & Harley Quinn edition is perhaps the most striking of the three customisation options. The Gold edition, as the name suggests, features an embossed rear section with 999 gold. Meanwhile, the Carbon Titanium Galaxy Z Flip is noticeably a sleek beauty with a menacing dark finish. The exterior of the foldable handset touts carbon fibre bordered by titanium. Additionally, the brand’s emblem and nameplate are in blackened titanium for contrast. Going back to the Joker & Harley Quinn edition, fans of the Batman franchise will be craving for one. It flaunts a stylish illustration of the Joker on the top half and of Harley Quinn on the bottom half. Caviar then applies a coat of jewellery varnish for extra protection. The 999 gold frame around the images is embossed with engravings of the four suits in a deck of playing cards. Moreover, only 54 examples of this custom Galaxy Z Flip will be available for pre-order.

The Air Jordan XXXIV introduces “new, proprietary innovation” that extends the line’s game-changing legacy to a new generation of athletes. In terms of design, Nike stripped away all the unnecessary material to achieve a minimalist look. The brand took things from the tooling and upper, leaving only elements athletes will need. Work on the new pair began with feedback gathered for the Air Jordan XXXIII, according to Jordan Brand designer Tate Kuerbis. Athletes they interviewed said they wanted improved traction and reduced weight. Those two things became Nike’s two starting points. They focused on athletes who play constantly above the rim and tried to make something more explosive than last generation’s pair.

The heritage vibes are real and immediately apparent with the Low Rider S, which brings back the good old knuckle-draggers the brand became highly vaunted for. Any person with even a smidge of interest in bikes knows who Harley-Davidson is, and more importantly, what it represents. The new 2020 Low Rider S does so unapologetically. The ride proves Harley-Davidson hasn’t burned its history book, and probably never will. Though it may not arrive as the brand’s most powerful bike this year, here you’ll find an example of a more forward-thinking Harley-Davidson. The Low Rider S is a performance cruiser that tips its hat to the West Coast heritage of the customized lowrider Harleys of the ‘80s. The new bike only comes in black and gray, adding to its formidable overall look. As for innards, you get a Milwaukee-eight 114 cubic inch V-twin, capable of making 119 pound-feet torque. For parts, you get a pair of big ol’ 300 mm disc brakes, with another disc in the back. Harley-Davidson also tucked in the front forks a bit, decreasing the rake to 28 degrees, two less than the Low Rider.

MONOGRAM TITANE

VUITTON COLLECTION

A French luxury fashion brand is putting a new spin to one of its iconic products. Travelers with a little too much money to burn just love the LV Bisten series. These luxurious suitcases boast top-notch craftsmanship and quality that’s perfect for the affluent globetrotter. Now it’s taking a bold approach by replacing some materials its using for the construction of this range of luggage. The Louis Vuitton Bisten Monogram Titane is a collection of three classic trunks made of titanium.

A couple of months ago at the Cruise 2020 event, the luxury label was once again in the headlines for something innovative. Highlighting flexible OLED technology, the fashion industry got its first handbags with integrated display panels on the sides. Instead of earning praises, the feedback was mostly negative from the majority of fashion critics worldwide. However, the Titane series appears to be on the right track as the innovation everyone would rather have. The lightweight metal components should make it more durable than normal. Mimicking the design of the traditional model, the Louis Vuitton Bisten Monogram Titane etches the prints using lasers. The titanium side panels look elegant as it wraps around the entire suitcase. To add some contrast, certain parts such as the lock, side clasps, and edges use ruthenium instead of the classic brass. Furthermore, the corners and handle are still made of cowhide leather and gray microfiber lining. There are three sizes to choose from: 50, 55, and 60. No need to wait long because these pieces are now available for purchase online or at official boutiques.

Not forgetting either the fact that the concept is underpinned by everyday driveability and superb on-board comfort. The Ferrari Roma’s 620 cv engine belongs to the V8 turbo family voted International Engine of the Year for four years in a row. The main innovations on this version of the Ferrari V8 are new cam profiles, a speed sensor which measures the turbine revolutions and allows the maximum revs per minute to be increased by 5,000 rpm, and the introduction of the Gasoline Particulate Filter to comply with the strictest Euro 6D anti-pollution standards. Ferrari engineers worked hard to optimize the GPF, a closed matrix filter which traps particulate matter produced during thermal engine combustion, thus guaranteeing that it would not compromise driving pleasure. The car’s new 8-speed dual-clutch gearbox is more compact and 6 kg lighter than its 7-speed predecessor. As well as reducing fuel consumption and emissions, shifts are faster and smoother thanks to the use of low-viscosity oil and a dry sump configuration to minimise fluid-dynamic efficiency losses, which makes the car even more responsive on the open road, but also especially comfortable in town and during stop & start driving situations.

“These include most notably a new powertrain with 8-speed gearbox.” The gearbox is based on a dual-clutch oil bath architecture and is derived from the new 8-speed gearbox introduced on the SF90 Stradale. The main modifications made with respect to the latter are longer gear ratios and the introduction of a reverse gear (which is not used in the SF90 Stradale gearbox as the electric motor is used for this). The new clutch module is 20% smaller but delivers 35% more torque than that of the previous 7-speed. The transmission software strategy has been evolved thanks to a more powerful ECU and better integration with the engine management software. This has made the shifts quicker, smoother and more consistent. Like all other turbocharged Ferraris in the range, the Ferrari Roma delivers almost instantaneous throttle response (in line with the Company’s zero turbo lag concept) thanks to its flat-plane crankshaft, more compact in size with lower rotating masses to improve fluid-dynamics; compact turbines which have a lower moment of inertia; the twin-scroll technology that increases the pressure of the exhaust pulses for maximum power; and the single-piece cast exhaust manifold with equal length pipes to optimise pressure waves in the turbine and reduce losses.

To achieve this goal the geometry of the entire exhaust has been redesigned thanks to the elimination of the two rear silencers, which significantly reduces backpressure in the tailpipes; a new geometry for the by-pass valves, machined to an oval shape which reduces exhaust backpressure and improves sound quality; and the proportional continuous and progressive by-pass valve control, depending on the driving situation. AERODYNAMICS To guarantee best-in-class aerodynamic performance whilst still retaining the Ferrari Roma’s stylistic purity, Maranello engineers developed several leading-edge technologies, most notably a mobile rear spoiler integrated into the rear screen designed to retain the car’s formal elegance when retracted and guarantee the downforce essential for the car’s extraordinary performance by automatically deploying at high speeds.

The Ferrari Roma boasts Variable Boost Management, a control software developed by Ferrari that adjusts torque delivery to suit the gear selected, delivering increasingly powerful pick-up as revs rise, whilst optimising fuel consumption. As the car goes up through the gears the amount of torque delivered by the engine increases all the way up to 760 Nm in 7th and 8th gear. This has allowed Ferrari to use longer gear ratios in the higher gears, which helps keep fuel consumption and emissions down, while adopting a steeper torque curve through the rev range in the lower gears for a feeling of smooth, consistent pick-up. By tradition, every single Ferrari engine has its own particular soundtrack that makes it unique. The Ferrari Roma is no exception to that rule.

The integration of highly technical features, aimed at obtaining sports car-type downforce, with the car’s design concept was made possible by the fact that the Ferrari Aerodynamics department and Styling Centre work hand-in-glove on a daily basis. The Ferrari Roma generates 95 kg more downforce at 250 km/h than the Ferrari’s other 2+ model, the Portofino, thanks to vortex generators on the front underbody and active aerodynamics at the rear. The former were given the task of very efficiently generating downforce on the front axle with a negligible increase in drag, while the electrically activated mobile spoiler produces downforce at the rear to optimally balance the car. Thanks to a special mechanism, the rear spoiler can deploy into three different positions: Low Drag, Medium Downforce, and High Downforce. In LD mode, the mobile element is flush with the rear screen, allowing air to flow over it and making it invisible to the flow. When deployed to its maximum height (HD), the mobile element creates a 135 degree angle with the surface of the rear screen, thus generating around 95 kg of downforce at 250 km/h yet increasing drag by a mere 4%. In medium downforce mode (MD), the mobile element generates around 30% of maximum downforce with an increase in drag of under 1%. The mechanism is activated by an electric motor in relation to speed and longitudinal and lateral acceleration. In low speed situations, when downforce has only a modest impact on the car’s performance, the spoiler automatically goes into LD position. This configuration is maintained until the car hits a speed of 100 km/h. Over 300 km/h, the spoiler is always in MD mode because in such conditions it is preferable to have a more balanced car, in part because of the minimal impact on drag. In speed ranges in which downforce plays a pivotal role in performance, the spoiler is in MD position and its movement depends on the car’s longitudinal and lateral acceleration. The position of the mobile spoiler is not selected manually. Its activation threshold value is variable and linked to the manettino position. This choice was made because of the desire to harmonise the integration of downforce generation with the vehicle dynamics controls.

In high performance handling or braking situations the mobile element moves to HD configuration, generating maximum downforce and making the car aerodynamically balanced. EXTERIOR DESIGN The Ferrari Roma’s design took inspiration from the concept of sporty elegance celebrated in the most legendary grand touring Ferraris of the 1960s, front-engined cars with simple yet elegant forms and a 2+ fastback coupé design. The Ferrari Roma shares many of these characteristics and embodies an extremely modern design language; it’s pure, refined styling and perfect proportions cleverly conceal the car’s power and sportiness. The sober, spare front of the car creates an overhanging shark nose effect. The wide front bonnet and sinuous wings flow into one another, in line with Ferrari’s traditional styling cues. The designers sought to preserve the minimalist elegance of the car’s forms by removing any vents or superfluous decorations; for instance, engine cooling is guaranteed by surfaces locally perforated only where strictly necessary, creating a new interpretation of the grille concept. In addition, the car was designed without the Scuderia Ferrari side shields, reflecting the approach taken with the road cars of the 1950s. The two linear full LED headlights, which lend the front of the car a distinctive character, are traversed by a horizontal light strip that brings a sense of tension to the car, in a nod to the iconic Ferrari Monza SPs. The leitmotif of the entire Ferrari Roma design is its purity, as evidenced by the active rear spoiler integrated into the rear screen. The tail of the car is very modern; technological developments made it possible to reduce the dimensions of the taillight assemblies, resulting in a minimalist form. The twin taillights look like gems set into the volume while linear light strips create a dialogue with the nolder, generating a sort of continuous virtual line. A compact diffuser that incorporates the fences and the exhausts completes the rear of the car.

INTERIOR DESIGN A new architectural concept for volumes and forms was developed for the Ferrari Roma’s cabin. The idea was to create two separate spaces or cells, one each for driver and passenger, in an evolution of the Dual Cockpit concept introduced on other cars in the range. The strikingly innovative look of this dual cockpit was achieved by extending the philosophy applied to the dash to the entire cabin. A cleverly balanced combination of elegance and sportiness brings a sense of exceptional refinement and unique character to the interior, thanks to a spare, modern design language that underscores the formal purity of both lines and volumes. Thus, the cabin is defined by elements that develop organically and as one around the whole concept of space and its perception. Unlike the Prancing Horse’s sports cars, which are typically more driver-oriented, the Ferrari Roma’s cabin has an almost symmetrical structure which produces a more organic distribution of both spaces and functional elements. In fact, the passenger will feel very involved in the driving experience, almost like a co-pilot. In line with this integrated architecture approach, forms have been crafted to create a sculptural volume in which there is a sense of textural continuity between all the various cabin elements. Created by paring back the volumes and underscored by piping along their edges, the two cockpits are cocooned in a wraparound volume and extend from the dashboard all the way back to the rear seats, organically incorporating the dash, doors, rear bench and tunnel. The Ferrari Roma’s F1 controls have been set into the central console in a modern metal plate which references an equally iconic feature from the past: the classic gear lever gate. This element is angled to make it easier for the driver to reach and see. The second a driver or passenger sits in the Ferrari Roma they are instantly aware of a feeling of modern yet iconic luxury, combined with the use of the most exclusive materials, not least full-grain Frau® leather, Alcantara®, chromed aluminium and carbon-fibre. The result is a distinctive car with a design that means the Ferrari Roma effortlessly meets the tastes of the most sophisticated clients. All of this makes the Ferrari Roma perfect for those looking for a car with an iconic and timeless design, capable of delivering unique driving experiences. The Prancing Horse’s new V8 2+ coupé embodies, beyond any doubt, the concept of “La Nuova Dolce Vita”. The look and feel of the cabin was driven by the complete redesign of the HMI, which marks a major leap forward starting from the new Ferrari range steering wheel designed using the “Eyes on the road, hands on the wheel” philosophy. The digital instrument cluster is protected by an elegant binnacle, which extends out naturally from the dash. The instrumentation is now entirely digital with all the screens going completely black when the car is not running, lending the cabin a very minimalist look. But once the Engine Start button on the steering wheel is pushed, a “ceremony” of sorts begins that sees all the digital components gradually springing to life until the whole cockpit is aglow.

68

MOTORS The instrument cluster comprises a single 16” HD screen that is curved to make it easier to read. In the default screen, the navigation and audio screens surround the large circular rev counter. The screen’s dimensions mean that there is huge flexibility in terms of personalising the displays, which are very easy to navigate using the steering wheel controls. For example, it is possible to select a full screen version of the navigation map for ease of use.

“The Ferrari Roma effortlessly meets the tastes of the most sophisticated clients.”

The new steering wheel introduces a series of multi-touch controls that allow the driver to control any aspect of the car without ever taking their hands off the wheel. Traditional controls include the 5-position manettino, headlights, windscreen wipers and indicators. The new haptic controls include a very practical touchpad on the right-hand spoke of the steering wheel which allows the driver to navigate the central cluster screens, while voice and Adaptive Cruise Control are on the left. The extremely intuitive and easy-to-use new 8.4” HD central display, set between the two cockpits, incorporates the other infotainment, sat-nav and climate control functions. The passenger’s experience reaches a new level with the optional 8.8” colour Full HD touchscreen which not only displays the car’s performance figures and status, but can also be used to interact with its on-board system selecting music, viewing satnav information and managing air conditioning functions. So essentially, the passenger becomes a co-driver.

e recently got to drive BMW’s big-booted Touring version of the seventh-generation 3 Series mid-sizer, which is available in dealers nationwide across Ireland. The Touring like the 3 series saloon adopts similarly improved dynamics, added safety features, more technology and updated styling. Sharing the same CLAR platform as the latest 3 Series saloon, the Touring stretches 76mm longer than its predecessor at 4709mm, while also being 8mm taller at 1470mm and 16mm wider at 1827mm. Stacked next to the saloon, the Touring features the same wheelbase (2851mm), and has wider front (+43mm) and rear (+21mm) tracks.

The BMW Touring is also boasting more headroom for all occupants, as well as more front-seat shoulder room, while also being 25 percent stiffer and about 10kg lighter than before. The electric tailgate is now also wider, which opens to a 500-litre boot, up just 5L, that can be expanded to 1510L (+10L) with the 40:20:40 split-fold rear seats stowed. For convenience, BMW has also carried over the opening rear window for loading small items.

71

The 3 Series Touring’s biggest point of difference from the SUV crowd comes to the fore on the road. Low slung and low fuss, this sleek car rides and handles impressively, with an innate ability to shake off bumps while offering the traditional balanced dynamics that have come to be expected of the 3 Series. In short, it leaves SUVs in its dust for handling and, frankly speaking, outright driving enjoyment. The new 3 Series Touring is lighter with an improved chassis for superior handling and you can notice it on the road. Plus you get copious amounts of boot space. The new BMW 3 Series Touring is priced from €46,900 for the 320d SE. The Touring will join the 3 Series saloon, which arrived in Ireland last year. Trim levels will include SE, Sport, M Sport and new M Sport Plus Edition. Engine variants include the 318d, 320d, 330d, 320i, 330i and M340i xDrive. A plug-in hybrid will join the 3 Series Touring line-up in summer 2020. Features include a 40:20:40 split rear seat with electric adjustment, an electric tailgate, 10-speaker audio system, adaptive LED headlights and LED fog lights and wireless smartphone charging. Innovative anti-slip rails on the floor of the boot allow even heavy luggage to be stowed securely. Thanks to the innovative Comfort access system, a brief movement of the foot below the rear bumper is all it takes to trigger the opening and closing of the tailgate. This and many other features make the BMW 3 Series Touring the sportiest miracle of space in its class. The cabin is immaculately presented with quality highlights and materials. BMW’s latest iDrive operating system ushers the 3 Series into a modern direction – without losing the cabin’s sense of familiarity. There’s more than adequate space for adults of all sizes up front and the pleasing proportions in the rear are replete with rear air vents, ISOFIX child tether points and more. Exterior styling has changed slightly from the previous model, gaining a larger, reshaped kidney grill, slimmer headlights and a sleeker side profile. It makes for a striking presence in the metal, garnering plenty of second glances from onlookers during my week long test drive. I’ve said it before. The numbers of people opting for an SUV to simply follow the herd means some very good cars are getting overlooked and the 3 series touring is certainly one of those cars you should look at before parting with your money.

Conclusion

The SUV might be the battleground for the car-makers, but the BMW 320d Touring proves the humble estate deserves its spot in the limelight. Lighter and livelier on the road than an SUV, with its sleek design, solid build and plenty of space, it is definitely worth a test drive before you are lured to buy an SUV.

Jamie HEASLIP

amie Heaslip is a former Rugby union who played for Leinster and Ireland. He played as number Eight. Mr Heaslip earned 95 caps for Ireland during his international career from 2006 to 217 making him one of the most capped players in Irish national team history. He also captained the Irish rugby team.

Forced to retire due to injury, the Naas native very graciously took time to speak to this publication about life after Rugby, his ambassador role with Land Rover and what the future holds. “Land Rover were so heavily involved with the rugby throughout the years that it was a natural progression that Melanie McCourt and I got talking some time ago and I agreed to become a brand ambassador for them. We have a great relationship and I’ve really enjoyed working with them over the last few years. I’ve gone to the Ploughing Championships with them and I’ve done cookery demonstrations and road trips with them and it has all been very enjoyable,’’ said Jamie Heaslip. “I’m currently driving the new Land Rover Discovery but you name it and I’ve driven it!” As to the first car Jamie ever owned? “I’ve only ever owned one car. I bought a Golf GTI in 2008 and I sold it in 2009 and I’ve been an ambassador for another brand prior to Land Rover. I did drive my parents cars as well. When I left my Leaving Certificate my Dad was based in Belgium (working in Ireland’s special operations force) and my Mum went out to him and I was driving a Nissan Primera and I remember driving that up and down to Dublin for training during the summers because for the remainder of the year I travelled around Dublin on the bus or I cycled because it was handier to travel that way with training and college,’’ enthused Mr Heaslip. If Mr Heaslip could own any car in the world, what car would he pick? “I would love to own a long wheeled base Range Rover Vogue. Range Rover spoilt me on my wedding day and they allowed me to use it (the Vogue) for the weekend of our wedding and it was an amazing vehicle to go around in. I’d love the SVX 90 soft top defender or a 110 soft top defender (with an open

75

cab at the back). The SVX are very hard to get your hands on because they are limited edition but I have to say that the Land Rover Discovery is a great bus,’’ added Jamie who is a keen car enthusiast. Having released his autobiography All In late last year, the book has received great reviews. “I was reluctant to write the book because I didn’t have a sad story to tell but yet I obviously worked bloody hard to get to where I got and nothing came easy. I’m from a middle class background, my parents were really nice to me and I never wanted for anything but I wasn’t given a whole lot at the same time so life was pretty good and normal for me so that is why I thought I needed to have a hook but when I began talking to people it became clear as to what I had achieved, the success I had, the longevity of my career and so forth,’’ revealed Mr Heaslip. “I’ve done interviews with Matt Cooper before and he’s a nice guy as well as knowing a lot of stuff about rugby so it made sense to write the book with Matt and it was a great experience because I very rarely look back on a whole lot and it was nice to look back and go down memory lane and close the page on my career. Matt worked hard to gather a lot of information for me as well,’’ imparted Jamie.

“I’ve had to reinvent myself.”

Having had a phenomenal career, it all came to an abrupt end as he was warming up in the Aviva Stadium on 18th March 2017 for the final match in the Six Nations tournament where Ireland where due to meet Ireland. 45 minutes before the match was due to commence, Heaslip was doing the usual drills and it was when he did the piston drill (with guys holding tackle bags) a drill that is an important one as well as it being done at speed and with force, something he has done hundreds of times previously that when he hit the tackle bag with force he felt something go in his back and immediately his left leg went dead. The Doctor and physiotherapist performed a quick fitness test before he was told that he couldn’t play the match that day. It was the day his career ended. A day Jamie didn’t expect to come as soon, prior to the end of the Six Nations tournament he had also just signed a new contract with the IRFU which would have brought him up until after the 2019 Rugby World Cup. “Rugby is a precarious sport, it is a contact sport and it is something that you buy in to. You try and put parameters around it, you try and get insurance and you hope that they work out but at the end of the day it is a contact sport and these things happen. I wasn’t sad that my career had come to an end if I’m being honest. I had a good run, I was a part of amazing teams and I met some amazing people and I’ve made some incredible friends. Rugby changed my life for the better and it provided me with a set up for my family that I wouldn’t have had without it and I will be eternally grateful for that,’’ said Jamie. “Life after Rugby is very busy! I have a day job, I work as the Head of Brand Marketing for Flender- Fast Flexible Finance (he previously worked as an Irish Large Customer Services Senior Account Manager for Google in Ireland). I am enjoying doing some rugby commentary as well. I’ve an amazing wife and a wonderful daughter, Harper so it is lovely to be able to kick back and relax with them and not have to worry about training or preparing for matches. Life is a little bit more relaxed in that regard. As to the future? “I’d love to bring out a podcast but other than that I don’t know what is coming down the tracks! I’ve gone from being the expert in my chosen career for 20 years and now I’ve had to reinvent myself which is challenging and difficult but it is an exciting time at the same time,’’ concluded Jamie Heaslip.
