Summer School ‘12 ‘Promoting Improvement in the Interests of all Learners’

“Welcome to Summer School 2012” Dear Colleague th

Find enclosed our portfolio of programmes for the 19 Annual RTU Summer School. Participation numbers have grown each year (rising to approximately 3000 last year) indicating the profession’s continuing thirst for learning and its inspirational commitment to doing the best for its pupils and young folk. This year the Summer School theme is ‘Promoting Improvement in the Interests of all Learners’. We draw our inspiration from the conclusions of the McKinsey report that “the quality of a schooling system cannot exceed the quality of its teachers” and the Department of Education’s emphasis through its Workforce Strategy Directorate on the importance of all who work within the education system to embrace career long learning.

We continue with the RTU tradition of aligning the focus of Summer School to emerging policy aimed at transforming schools and the professional practice within and between schools. This year’s Summer School seeks to make a key contribution to the continuous professional development and capacity building agendas upon which successful school development and the raising of pupil’s achievement depends.

I am indebted to those colleagues across the education community and beyond who with great enthusiasm and energy seize the opportunity offered by Summer School to engage with teachers and other professionals in their unending pursuit of excellence.

Thank you for your continuing interest and support. Tom Hesketh (Dr) Director, RTU

This brochure is designed to give the reader a flavour of the portfolio on offer this year. For more information on Summer School and other events organised by the Regional Training Unit visit our website at

Guidance Notes for Applicants Applications will only be available on-line

www.rtuni.org

Please complete the on-line application form as fully as possible as this will aid the Summer School administration team to process your application quickly and accurately. You may apply online at www.rtuni.org

It is important that each applicant lists their home address contact and telephone number as some of the administration and correspondence concerning Summer School is carried out during school holidays.

Applicants applying for more than one course should ensure that the dates of the courses for which they are making an application do not overlap.

All applicants who submit an application prior to the closing date on 15 June 2012 will be informed via letter as to whether or not their application has been successful late June, early July.

There is no charge for Summer School courses and travel claims of more than 40 miles may be claimed by school based staff for all courses attended. Further details will be supplied upon acceptance. [Travel form available to download from http://rtuni.org/support/]

Applications will be considered on a 1 come 1 serve criteria. Whenever a course is oversubscribed applicants will be able to submit an application for a waiting list.

Courses that have not met the minimum number may not run. Applicants will be advised and offered an opportunity to attend other programmes that are still available.

The RTU website will be updated regularly regarding courses that are running.

There will be a number of venues this year with the main campus at Stranmillis University College. You will be informed of your course location when you receive your confirmation letter.
