Rising Sea Levels
How climate change harms the Virginia coastline
Rising sea levels are a major effect of climate change that is often overlooked
How does climate change cause Sea Levels to rise? As tempatures increase, large glaciers and icecaps are melting, therefore increasing the amount of water in our oceans. As the water heats up water molecules also expand further leading the volume of oceans to increase. Sea Levels have now risen around 8-9 inches since around 1980 and if nothing is done they will continue to rise.
But how will this rise in ocean levels effect Virginia in the future?
Beaches will begin to erode
Eventually disappearing entirely
There will be an increase in costal flooding
This can majorly damage cities on the shore
And Low lands will eventually be submerged
Forcing many people to move out of theses areas
This will result in mass migration inland
Then Leading to overpopulation in inland areas, such as Richmond
Rising Sea Levels is an issue that needs to be addressed promptly, but what is Richmond doing to solve that issue? Look no further than RVAgreen 2050! RVA green is Richmonds climate plan to reduce green house gases in the city as well as adapting Richmond citizens to the These greenhouse gases are whats causing climates to warm and sea levels to rise. Through this plan Richmond hopes to lower greenhouse gas emmision in the city to zero by 2050. With the help of RVAgreen 2050, Richmond can do it’s part to slow down and hopefully deminish rising sea levels.
