OctoberisfullofholidaycelebrationsattheJCCBlockandDreebenSchoolforYoungChildren.Weended SeptemberandbeginOctoberlearningaboutRoshHashanah(theJewishNewYear)andYomKippur(theDay ofAtonement).Thechildrenwilltasteapplesandhoney,forasweetnewyear,makeRoshHashanahgreeting cards,heartheShofar,bakehoneycakeandsharesomeroundchallahinadditiontoreadingRoshHashanah storiesandsingingRoshHashanahsongs.AswemoveintoYomKippur,wefocusonlearningaboutthechoices andmistakeswesometimesmake.Theolderchildrenwilldiscusswhatitmeanstotakeresponsibilityforthose actionsandwhatitmeanstoapologizeorcorrecttheproblem.

ThisyearwearerelaunchingandexpandingPre-K/olderadultprogramingthroughthecreationoftheL’Dor v’DorProgram.L’Dorv’Dormeans“fromgenerationtogeneration,”reflectingtheJewishvalueofour responsibilitytopassknowledgefromonegenerationtothenext.
TheprogramkickedoffappropriatelyenoughwithRoshHashanah,theJewishNewYear.Thechildrenvisited theolderadultsinSeptemberandsharedapplesandhoneyforasweetNewYear.InOctoberwewilljoin togethertohaveasnackintheSukkahtofulfillthemitzvotofwelcomingguestsandsharingamealinthe Sukkah.OnNovember12,wewillcelebrateThanksgivingwiththereturnofourintergenerationalThanksgiving Luncheon.Welookforwardtomanymoreopportunitiesforintergenerationalconnectionsthroughoutthe year.

BornandraisedinSan Antonio,Ethangraduated fromUTSAwithabachelor’s inInterdisciplinaryStudies. HejoinedtheJinthefirst weekafterhighschool graduationandhasbeen committedeversince.
Startingasasummercampcounselor,Ethanquicklyfell inlovewiththeworkandhassinceadvancedtoDirector ofYouthandCamp.Heisdedicatedtohelpingfuture leadersreachtheirfullpotential,whichdriveshispassion forthiswork.Outsideofwork,Ethanenjoysfishing, spendingtimewithfamily,andpreparingforthenext year'sSummerCamp.

KatieGatesmovedtoSanAntonio, Texasattheageof8andquickly beganattendingmanydifferent JCCyouthprograms.Shemadeher JCCdebutintheJCC’syoungest theatreprogram,NOVA,asan OompaLoompainWillyWonka.She continuedtospendmuchofher
timeattheJCC,attendingtheJCCSummerCamps,continuing hersmallactingcareerinNOVAandSTARZ,andjoiningthe KidsClubafterschoolprogram! Sheeventuallywentonto attendTexasStateUniversitywhilereturningeachyearasa campcounselorandeventuallyanadministrator!InFall2023 shegraduatedwithaFinancedegreeandturnedtotheJCCto starthercareerpath.Sheisnowextremelyproudandexcited tohavereturnedastheYouthandCampProgramCoordinator workingyear-roundtoproduceNOVAandSTARZproductions, assistwithseasonalcampsandkidsclub,andcontinue administeringandparticipatingintheSummerCampprogram thatallholdsaspecialplaceinherheart!
