Site Context

8

The above map shows the critical location of the site with regards to the chapel. Many boats depart from this site on the Pilgrimmage day. We hope by siting our ghost chapel here it will be integral to the event held that day.

St MacDara’s Chapel In late November, Unit 17 travelled to the west coast of Ireland to see St Macdaras Chapel. The 6th century stone chapel is the only remaining structure on the Island. It has been compared to a periwinkle stuck to a rock. The chapel is sat on a bed of red granite, this geology which surrounds it and the compression between each stone that makes up the walls are the basis for our ‘ghost chapel’. During our trip, we became facinated by the landscape surroudning the chapel and the history of the site itself. We are intrigued by the layers of history embedded into the island and the storeis and folklore surrouding it. On the one hand, we were intrigued by historical background with the possiblity that an original wooden chapel had once stood there prior and on the other hand the importance the the Island in a modern day context and what St Macdara stands for in the community today.

Colour and Texture

10

Our design influence comes from the rock faces, lichen, sea and grass that all layer to form beautifully rich composition of detailed mini landscapes. The colours are extrodinary and form a backdrop for both the chapel. We aim to enhance these features in our design specifically through the tapestry design.

Location of proposed chapel

12

The Ghost Chapel is inherently linked to the original chapel and thus acts as a marker on the mainland. The site must be near the water with a clear view to the chapel and must be direccted to face towards the St MacDara chapel. The orientaiton is responding to the direction the sun is facing on the 16th July.

ALTAR

MAIN STRUCTURE

Proposal strategy There are three components to the chapel - main structure, tapestry and an altar. For 364 days of the year, the altar keeps the tapestry and religious objects safe, while the main structure acts as a rainscreen and keeps some of the rain out of the interior of the chapel. Once a year, on 16th of July, the tapestry is hung inside the chapel, acting as a beautiful decoration to mark this special day. The altar is opened to reveal the objects and carry out the mass. If St MacDaras can be reached on this day, the altar and objects will travel to the island and thus the box must be transportable and lightweight.

In this image we are stood inside the chapel looking towards St MacDaras chapel - you can see the beautiful ligh patterns that will reflect onto the fabric and across the floor inside the ghost chapel.

Link to St MacDara Chapel The image above shows our ghost chapel in relation to the main chapel. Our ghost chapel does not mimic the existing chapel but rather analyses its structure and in its new prescnese on the mainland it becomes a fragile, ‘ghostly’ version of the chapel as a modern day signifier of the original chapel.

Cast concrete enclosure

16

The main enclosure will be cast in white, concrete. This conrete enclosure keeps most of the rain out and thus protects the box. This is the primary functino of this sheltered enclosure. We want it to be protective yet fragile.

Materiality We have been experimenting with the different ways we could cast this structure. These tests showed us how beautiful this structure can become. Each test improves and reveals to us a new step towards realising the building. We hope with further help and advice we can push the boundaries of concrete.

/02/Altar & Religious artefacts ST MACDARA CHAPEL

GHOST CHAPEL

The altar remains closed in the chapel throughout the year and is opened on the day of the mass by the priest using a special ‘key’ - a metal bar which releases two parts of the box and allows the user to shift it and reveal religious objects concealed inside it.

Both chapels throughout the year

1 Mass on the coast due to high tide on 16th July: The mass is carried out in the Ghost Chapel and the altar is used inside the building during the ceremony

In case the mass happens on the island, the altar can be unlocked from its base inside the Ghost Chapel and using the same ‘key’, the object can be carried onto a boat and sailed to St MacDara chapel.

2 Mass on St MacDara’s Island on 16th July: the altar is taken to St MacDara’s chapel by boat

Taking inspiration from boat-making in Connemara, the main structure of the altar will be constructed out of durable oak wood and the interior clad in red cedar, which will protect the tapestry and artefacts from insects and weathering.

Function of the altar & religious aretefacts

1 18

The altar and objects are used for the mass outside the chaple on the pilgrimmage day. When the mass cannot be carried out on the Island - our altar and artefacts which are safely stored the other 364 days are removed, opened and reveal the sacred objects they have been protecting all year round.

Tapestry Inspiration and Testing

20

The Tapesty will be designed in collaboration with a textile bespoke manufacturere Insley&Nash who have kindly offered their support with the project. The tapestry will act as a stained glass window, reflecting beautiful colour into the ghost chapel and using shadows from the facade.

The Tapestry The Tapestry will be hung on the pilgrimmage day once a year. The rest of the time it will be protected inside the box with the religious objects. it is made of 4 separate strips that run along the inside face of the wall at the end there will be a triangular piece that provides good acoustic qualties for the mass.

This image reflects the ghost chapel on pilgrimmage day with the altar in postion and the glowing tapestry with light dancing on the surface. Our ghost chapel aims to be a worthy place to hold mass when St MacDara cannot be reached.
