Dear reader, I am glad you take time to go through this portfolio. I’ve made a selection of recent works and divided this portfolio into two main parts. In the first part I am going to show you my recent graduation project I did at the Design Academy Eindhoven Masters. This is followed by a selection of other product design works. Later, the second part focuses on recent graphic design work I made for several clients. What I show in this portfolio is a selection that communicates not only my capabilities and skills, but also my personal interest and point of view. I hope you enjoy the pages that will follow, Bart Nijssen September 2010

DESIGN ACADEMY EINDHOVEN MASTERS master graduation project DATE June 2010 DESCRIPTION Houvast is a universal joint, that enables you to connect any object to any surface. It gives new purpose to left-over materials, discarded objects & forgotten parts. Rejoining these materials gives them new meaning and new purpose, by creating all kinds of structures: from cabinets to tables, from chairs to bookshelves. Houvast gives function to the functionless. Houvast is my Design Academy Eindhoven Masters Graduation project, which resulted in my Master of Design degree. This design was a result of a study into the state of design during a crisis period. The research concluded in 2 books and a thesis entitled “Design in Times of Crisis, Revisited.

NATIONAL UNIVERSITY OF SINGAPORE School of Design project DATE December 2006 DESCRIPTION Badkamer is a bathroom concept, inspired by the new urban citizen. Living in a vivid city one might notice the layering of it’s environment. You will find ‘levels’ for working, for living, for transportation and more. This city layering has been an inspiration for this bathroom concept which makes use of the flexibility of applying different layers in a fixed space. By sliding elements to the sides new spaces can be created, and by sliding the cabinets against each other, you prevent your appliances from getting wet. An exhibition model of this design was built in the UK for EDF’s Ideal Home Show 2009 in London and has been published in a number of magazines and websites, like Design Magazine UK and CASA& Mercado in Brazil.

DESIGN ACADEMY EINDHOVEN MASTERS conceptual research project DATE December 2009 DESCRIPTION This project is inspired by the analogy of evolution in biology and evolution of human language. Like animals and plants, languages change, split into sub-varieties, revive and even evolve functionless features. Through research, processes accounting for this evolution of language have been found. Understanding these processes creates awareness of the preciousness and vulnerability of any language; from a small indigenous language to a dialect or standard language. By adapting these evolutionary processes to a series of objects, we can create a physical representation of something as ‘invisible’ as the evolution of a language. In this series of 32 hand-made pencils, I want to show the processes that have influenced our languages in the past and show how these same structures are still influencing our daily languages.

DESIGN ACADEMY EINDHOVEN MASTERS conceptual translations DATE November 2009 DESCRIPTION A model for a cabinet inspired by Magical Realism and repoussior in paintings. Repoussoir is an object along the right, left or foreground in a painting that directs the viewer’s eye into the composition and creates depth. This technique is found frequently in Dutch seventeenth-century landscape paintings. This cabinet has 2 sides / 2 realities. From one point of view its a drawer, however from the other side its a regular cabinet with doors. This reflects the ‘illogical scenario’ although it seems ‘normal’. When you open the cabinet using the doors, you will always see the drawer, which works as a repoussoir. This creates awareness of the total volume of the cabinet. From the otherside, when the drawer is used, a much smaller volume is available, leaving a void.

DESIGN ACADEMY EINDHOVEN MASTERS conceptual story-telling DATE October 2009 DESCRIPTION ‘A model for a table’ We often lose connection with the objects that surround us. Their origin, materials or construction are facts that are of less importance to us. This combination of wood, epoxy and a tool gives insight in the table itself. Not only showing how it’s made, but also which tools were used during the production process.

DESIGN ACADEMY EINDHOVEN MASTERS conceptual story-telling DATE September 2009 DESCRIPTION This glazed porcelain hammer is a contrast to a regular hammer. It’s fragile, it’s expensive and it’s appealing. Due it’s material characteristics you can only use this hammer once. So one will only use it, when he wants to hang a picture, for example, that is really precious. Something that has more value than the hammer itself.

DESIGN ACADEMY EINDHOVEN MASTERS conceptual story-telling DATE October 2008 DESCRIPTION Delft blue ceramics are seen by many as typical Dutch products, but the Delftware originated in the Far East. Dutch trade-men brought these objects home, where they started producing our own version of these ceramic objects. The typical Delftware is, funny enough, now very much loved by Asian tourists. The porcelain vase I present here gives the opportunity to not only take the vase itself home, but also the craft of hand-painting these kind of object. This Do-It-Yourself mentality is symbolized by the well-known Paint by Numbers method.

DESIGN ACADEMY EINDHOVEN MASTERS souvenir design DATE September 2009 DESCRIPTION A soup plate design by Fumiko Ito & Bart Nijssen The Dutch have been controlling nature for a long time, to create and maintain their land. As a result of climate change and global warming, the water level will increase globally. If the Dutch now forget to fight against the water, like they did with their dykes, polders and canals, The Netherlands will soon be flooded by the uprising water! When you eat your soup, you will see the landscape of Amsterdam appear. Only with your own effort, you can keep the right balance between land and ‘water’. When you almost finish your soup you will experience that you can’t eat all the soup. But realize we can’t control all the water on our planet.

CLIENT Effenaar Eindhoven DATE August / September 2010 DESCRIPTION Effenaar Eindhoven asked me to make a design for several club nights on their programme. The visual identity of these promotional materials had to reflect the atmosphere of the music and allow small variations throughout the year for the reoccurrence of these events. Key in these designs is their recognizability, when applied as flyers, large posters but also a webflyer.

CLIENT OJC Jonosh DATE Feb. 2010 DESCRIPTION OJC Jonosh is a small venue / youth center that struggles to keep up in times like these. With the launch of this new website and promotional activities this volunairy-based youth center made a fresh start to keep up with the new social-based opportunities of the internet today. The perception is determined by the photograph on the background, which will change from time to time, giving the website a new appearance within it’s rigid grid.

CLIENT DeBesteKoffieVan.nl team DATE Nov. 2009 DESCRIPTION DeBesteKoffieVan.NL (Dutch for The Best Coffee Of .NL) is a project I initiated and started building and designing with two friends, one being an interaction designer and one an architect. The goal of this website is to persuade coffee drinkers to search for the best coffee in our country. By grading the coffee they drink in coffee bars and restaurant we map the best coffees for each city. Currently we are expanding this website with a mobile app, which should give the coffee lovers more freedom and momentum to leave their marks. In the design of this website a lot of attention is paid to the interaction and graphic appearance, to stand out in the growing number of communitydriven websites.
