YOU’VE COME A LONG WAY BABY

Dear Henry, Chester, Fumiko, Jose, Rony, Michael, Kit, Hanna, Seo, Kwak, Cho, Youngshin, Heather, Dana, Luke, Tal, Carolina, Saara, Susana, Mauri, Alessia, Mie, Carl, Sax, Tom and Cédric, “You’ve come a long way baby”. That’s Fatboy Slim’s hit-album from 1998 featuring Right Here, Right Now. And isn’t that what it’s all about? Coming a long way, to experience what is right here, right now? Eindhoven. Maybe first it meant nothing, because you hadn’t even heard of this city. Then it became the city of the Design Academy. The city where you would go and study, the city where you tried to find your way. Now, it is the city where you have lived for almost two years, the city for which you’ve traded your hometown, previous studies and/or previous lovers. It’s the city in which you have worked, in which you have struggled, where you’ve met new people and made new friends. Eindhoven became your new home, at least for some time. Whatever cities will be next, you have given your identity to the Dutch houses you’ve considered ‘home’. And so did we..

PREFACE

This book documents our wide range of identities, nationalities and personalities through the places where we have lived. See how we maintained our identities, and how the environment inspired us in return. This is Eindhoven like we made it. Thanks for stopping by. Good luck at the next station... INSPIRED BY MASTERS

I get to know a new group of Masters Students at the end of each summer; young international designers selected world wide. Sometimes they come with husbands, wives or young children. They travel light, carrying mostly a strong desire to learn and a wish to develop in different creative directions. It is amazing how they re-arrange their lives in a new country in matter of days. A few clever vintage findings and their designer eye will results in spaces where they can work, relax and even party, without to compromise their culture or traditions. At the Design Academy Eindhoven Interesting discussions and long hours of work are waiting ahead. Some moments of drama and a rollercoaster of creative pleasures combined with frustrations will scar their souls. They will combat daily in an imaginative field made of intensively high rewarding discoveries, multicultural discussions and designer’s dilemmas. I will be present, fulfilling my role a bit tutorial, and a bit pastoral.

ANNA CROSETTI MASTERS COORDINATOR DESIGN ACADEMY EINDHOVEN

They remind me of how much energy and courage it takes to leave everything behind. I understand them deeply, having made the same choice years ago, moving from Italy to the Netherlands. This understanding will be our secret pact, we will unavoidably share the price of this decision. It will be part of the struggle for becoming a better designer.

WHEN A HOUSE BECOMES A HOME

I moved to Amsterdam almost 25 years ago, right after my graduation from the art academy in Arnhem. I felt it was time for a change, and also I had fallen in love with a man who was born and bred in the city. We both knew it was the place we wanted to live. Our apartment was new when we got it, so we didn’t have to renovate. However, we did do some major interventions in order to create more space. I love the use of different materials in an interior: the feel of things, the way they look, how they were made and where they came from. I’d describe my own style as simple and pure, subtle, strong and honest. I like bright, clear colours and also the non-colours such as grey and shades of ginger, lemon and apricot. We have a red Martin Visser couch, the kitchen is ultramarine and in the study we painted a yellow wall for energy. Besides a natural wooden floor and grey tiles, we have green floors and Moroccan tiles. My favourite room in the house is the bathroom. This is where I start and end the day. I relax and reflect there. Which doesn’t always have to take long: in three minutes I can transform myself into a complete different state of mind.

ANNE MIEKE EGGENKAMP CHAIRWOMAN DESIGN ACADEMY EINDHOVEN

At home we like to have dinnerparties with our friends, a mixture of scientists, artists, designers and writers. Those nights I wear my Finnish apron and I feel like an Italian mama serving lots of antipasti, and for exemple a whole fish followed by a warm sticky chocolate pudding. We drink water with lemons and mint and a good red wine, while listening to music. Sometimes we end the evening dancing. Even though I like Amsterdams stimulating environment, I balance my urban existence with places I go to on vacation, where I can be at one with nature; completely disconnected. Mother Nature is my favourite designer: the older I become, the more I wonder if we can do any better. So much to learn, so much to enjoy. I bought my bed at IKEA, and the thought of having to return to get everything else I needed filled me with dread. My first trip to the Polish market was the start of a very slippery slope; I often find myself browsing the laden shelves whenever I’m in need of inspiration, or simply to pass the time of a wintery afternoon. I believe my room has become a testament to that devotion. p. 15

My house is very close to school, and it has a large kitchen. Perfect for dinner parties! Japanese food, homemade Finnish bread, Danish salad combined with French wine for example. Or rice with Thai curry combined with Thaiwanese spices and Belgium beers. In any case I learned a lot about other cultures this way! My bedroom doesn’t have a lot in it. I like to start the day from an empty white space. (Dear Nichon and Bart! Please check my English and change my sentence more better for book instead of me. I wrote it just quickly. Sorry) p. 21

The landlord once called us the day after we had a party: “the building is all professionals, you know I took a risk taking a student, so I hope that it wasn’t a mistake.” So much for more parties. This little apartment has many faces; it has had many dinners: (move the couch all the way over, pull out the table from the window, bring the chairs and if necessary the extra table from outside, unfold all the chairs, and convert coffee table to serving table, simple!) but it’s also often in studio-mode, which is when my poor boyfriend is tip-toeing around knives, paper, books, glue, sticks, and whatever else takes over. Besides that it can be a greenhouse, an owl barn, a yarn store, craft market, and coffee shop (the kind with coffee). Whatever face this apartment puts on, it always feels like home. This apartment has the perfect amount of cosy….Although sometimes a door would have been handy to slam in an argument! (without having to end up in the bathroom) p. 27

I was introduced to the exhibitionist style of Dutch living because we don’t have curtains. We see our neighbours play ping pong in their livingroom, they probably notice me practice capoeira in mine. We befriended one of them named Helen, and on her birthday we posted a big “HAPPY BIRTHDAY” poster on our window. This was not the only time we interacted with the outside. Even though we live on the first floor, people passing by often ask us for directions. Once a stranger waved at us, when we went on the balcony to find out what he wanted, he claimed he sold cocaine. p. 35

Even though I spent most weekends with my family in Brussels, my cosy flat in Eindhoven feels like home. The Saturday market takes place right in front of our apartment. Those days the entire house is filled with the eclectic scents of flowers and food, and the cosy noise of people chatting and shopping. Our toilet has posters of nature on all its four walls, you feel like you are peeing in the wild! p. 39

I HATE student houses! But this one was cheap and central, so I went to the ‘Kijkavond’. This is nothing more than an evening during which you can have a look at the room. The twist? There’s 20 others that want it too, meaning you have to convince your potential future house mates that you are a perfect addition for the house! How I succeeded? First of all I did not come with my mom (yes, some still dare). Second, I told them I was an über-social Belgian guy who likes to party the night away! I didn’t realize back then that the next two years would also contain a lot of working-the-night-away … p. 49

The best thing about this 1930’s apartment is the amount of light and its location. When my girlfriend and I found this place, we decided to take it within thirty minutes; we were in a hurry to go to the theatre. Now, our kitchen is usually fragranced by the smell of fresh coffee, the living room and studio are always filled with good music and the garden shed is full of bikes and tools! p. 55
