Introduction This document has been created by students from the Sheffield School of Architecture for use by ISRAAC Somali Community Association as part of a wider Live Project to investigate the potential future of the Sharrow Vestry Hall. It intends to provide useful information with relation to the upkeep and development of the Grade II listed Sharrow Vestry Hall at 54 Cemetery Road, Sheffield, S11 8FP. The information provided is relevant and up to date as of 04/11/2016. When addressing the document in the future it is vital to keep in mind that, if a considerable period of time has passed, some of this information may have become outdated.

WHAT IS ISRAAC?

About Israac Israac Somali Community and Cultural Association started as a lunch club support service for Somali elderly in Sheffield. The main aims of the group are to provide safety & care for each other, give a sense of community & cultural support, and combat isolation & loneliness. Furthermore Israac advocates the improvement of education, in particular for the young, raising confidence and skills. It also aims to improve integration by involving people into society in general, maintaining a strong cultural identity whilst respecting the beliefs of others.

sTAKEHOLDER MAPPING There are a huge raft of individuals, groups and organisations that have a stake in Israac and Vestry Hall. This mapping shows their interrelationships and seeks to categorise them into different groups. Some are connected to the project through links to Israac’s work and the wider community it serves; others such as the council via financial or administrative paths. The historic nature of the Hall means that heritage bodies are going to play a pivotal role in any developments or changes to its architecture. Another section is concerned with the researchers that are following the organisation. The Empowering Design Practices group has been studying Israac as one case study in a five year piece of resarch, and funded this Live Project as part of their investigations. There is also a significant group of existing other users of the Hall, who are clearly deeply invested in how the space may change.

brief development The Live Project were initially asked to focus on developing design proposals for the hall and its number of underused spaces. We quickly understood, however, that simply providing plans and visualisations would not be enough to ensure Israac’s future. They want, and need, to open their doors to a wider range of uses. It is within this context that our brief developed.

02. vestry hall Vestry Hall is the home of Israac, and they are currently in the process of purchasing it from the council. This was made possible due to 55 families from Sheffield’s Somali community all contributing money to go towards securing their historic sanctuary.

Location The project is located within inner Sheffeld, just 5 minutes away from the city centre, but adjacent to residential areas.

SHEFFIELD

Vestry Hall is situated in the ‘Sharrow’ just inside Sheffield’s ‘Commercial Core.’ This location provides numerous advantages due to its closeness to vital city structures as well as public transport.

vestry halls AT T E R C L I F F E B U R N G R E AV E

Israac’s Vestry Hall home is just one of several such buildings that can be found across Sheffield. Historically, vestries were the bodies that administered the ecclesiastical and secular affairs of parishes. They originally met in the vestry of local churches – rooms used for the storage of religious clothing for worship, sacred items and official records – until this was outlawed in 1850. The hall is a result of this move towards more secular governance – an administrative building that managed the registration district of Ecclesall Bierlow. This included Ecclesall, Hallam, Dore and Beauchief.

Changes to the road layout and the demolition of the buildings that sat right up against it have left the building in prominent position, but whose frontage perhaps no longer relates to how the public interact with it.

Externally, Vestry Hall’s key feature is its decorated front facade that addresses Cemetery Road to the south (1). The level of ornamentation is lower on the other sides of the building, especially the blank wall that flanks Waitrose to the east. (2) Internally, the main hall space is lit by large north-facing windows at the rear of the building (3), and two large, circular rooflights in the ceiling (4). The roof space above has limited access and is broken up by structure. (5)

03. learning about israac To develop appropriate designs for Israac, it was vital for the Live Project group to investigate and understand the nature of the organisation, how & why it operates, and what challenges it faces.

1987

Some Somali mariners settled in port areas of the UK, notably London, Cardiff and Bristol

Somali Community and Cultural Association (ISRAAC) established

Israac’s history is entwined with the history of the Somali community in Sheffield. The population has grown over the years, with more second generation individuals who have grown up within the UK. Some of these members may not view Israac as such an essential asset.

Civil war breaks out in Somalia. Many leave the country seeking refuge elsewhere. The UK government’s ‘family re-union arrangements’ saw relatives of existing Somali families in Sheffield come to live in the city

SHEFFIELD

Israac have been heavily involved in bidding to get recognition for the nation of Somaliland. The vast majority (>90%) of Sheffield’s Somalian community have roots in the former British colony. Members of Israac formed a group that lobbied local politicians to support their campaign. As a result of this, Sheffield became the first city in the world to formally recognise Somaliland. SOMALILAND

Yussuf handed Certificate to Julie Dore from President of Somaliland for nd Adam Yusuf handed Certificate for Sheffield City Council

This momentous occasion is hoped to be the first step on the long road to Somaliland becoming a fully acknowledged nation. It is clear that Israac are instrumental in this drive and it is hard to understate their importance to this fledgling state.

Project issues summary We are organising so many activities within this space.

To further understand the difficulties of the project, the Live Project team summarised the issues and concerns relating the Israac organisation and Vestry Hall itself.

The Hall Space is quite underused!

This building needs a clean-up... What is this historical building?

I can smell Waitrose’s bins!

Too many unused spaces within Vestry Hall!

How are we going to pay for the heating?

Project Potentials The Live Project team revealed that Israac has the potential to become far more than a community association. The physical setting of Vestry Hall provides a vast number of opportunities for providing Israac with both community activities (such as lunch club and tutorial classes) as well as commercial activities (such as room rental and event hosting). To help Israac separate this potential split in identity, the Live Project Team decided to design two separate identity packages to better represent Israac in both community and commercial settings.

04. identity & branding

Accurately representing and then promoting the identity of Israac through branding can help to immediately improve the reach, scope and professionalism of the organisation. This will be critical as it seeks to survive and thrive in the future.

Logo Participation Activity DESIGN YOUR ISRAAC LOGO To reach the wider community about the design and ideas of the Israac logo, a participation exercise was designed to engage the public to help design and draw their ideal image for arttracting people into Vestry Hall.

Design your Israac Logo

This page summarises the different approaches and designs in the ISRAAC logo from the wider Sheffield Somlai community. This participation excercise aims to engage the younger population of the community to design and draw their ideal image to attract people into vestry hall.

The excercise is divided into 6 parts:

1. Choose your base 2. Choose your words 3. Choose your add-ons

46

Live Project | Israac | Getting Started

What was revealed? Throughout the participation events, it is apparent that: • The sense of community, unity and the pride of Somalian culture are essential in representing Israac. • The colour mustard yellow seems to be most popular among the community due to its similarity to Vestry Hall’s internal colours and effectiveness as an external display. Additionally, more ‘vibrant’ colours are demanded for more eye-catching results. • The name ‘Israac Somali Community Centre’ appears to be most in-tune with the wider Somalian Community.

WHAT IS ISRAAC? Israac Somali Community Association traces its routes back to the first Somali immigrants who worked in the Sheffield steel industry in the 1980s. Its aim was to assist this community in gaining access to a wide range of services and helping integrate with local society.

Nowadays it offers educational classes, advocacy and a daily lunch club, as well as hosting social gatherings such as weddings.

israac’s future

THE VISION

54 Cemetery Road // Sheffield S11 8FP

A leaflet that briefly explains Israac’s history, current situation and plans for the future has been produced. This can be used at events, meetings or simply for anyone to pick up at the hall. It is hoped that this will help generate interest in, knowledge about and potentially funding for the organisation as it moves forwards.

Vestry Hall has been the home of Israac for more than 30 years. It is a Grade II listed building that dates back to 1857, and a vital part of Sheffield’s urban fabric. The size and age of the Hall provide numerous challenges but also opportunities.

This leaflet was produced as part of a University of Sheffield Live Project. More information about Live Projects can be found here:

Israac Community Association is in the process of transitioning from a purely charitable organisation into a self-sustained, independent social enterprise. Vestry Hall has the potential to be developed into a better, more enjoyable space that provides for both the Somali and wider community.

WEB PRESENCE ISRAAC ENTERPRISE + BUSINESS CENTRE

ISRAAC

As with the logo, it is suggested that online Israac separates to some extent the functions of its community and future commercial activities.

Enterprise + Business Centre

We have proposed two websites, with cohesive branding and clear links between the two. The first would advertise Israac’s current activities, provide information about its history and promote events. In the future, as more external commercial uses of Vestry Hall start to take place, the second website will be aimed at an audience that wants to investigate renting spaces within the Hall.

Physical Branding examples To help promote and attract public attention towards Israac, the Live Project team developed a series of signage strategies to help bring people into Vestry Hall. Such strategies hopes to bring people into the building and to discover the different activities and services Israac provides.

L - S H A P E D I S P L AY B O A R D The L-Shape display board is best used indoor, as it allows numerous information to display at once at eye level. The display is equipped with a plywood display surface which allows different items such as paper or leaflets to be stick or pinned onto its surface. If required, the surface can be painted with blackboard paint to allow information to be written on.

navigating the building A set of branded building signage was produced to make Vestry Hall more navigable and make it easier to open up to other external users. The Live Project Public Presentations was used as a test for the public interacting with a simplified building plan accompanied by long-term room signage.

demonstration

The existing foam model allows the Live project group to design a participation game for the community and to gather information on activities and facilities needed.

To showcase the beautiful interior space of the main Hall, a sectional model was made at 1:25 scale to provide Israac an opportunity to demonstrate the potential of its roof space, and the possibilities within the hall space.

A massing model is built at a 1:50 scale to show the whole Vestry hall and its immidiate site. The internal layout of the building can be easily switched out for different purposes.

The relatively small size of the massing model provides an opportunity for Israac to showcase the overall massing of Vestry Hall in a more public setting.
