------------------------------------------------------ This is the first review I've ever written for Amazon though I've read hundreds. I am moved to write this review to help balance out all the ignorant garbage that is being said about this book and the next, A Dance for Dragons. This book deserves all 5 stars that I would give to every book in this series, some of the most beautiful and deep novels I've ever read. Now if you're reading this, you've probably already read the first 3 books so I won't lavish any additional praise on them. They're amazing. Enough said. A Feast for Crows is a great continuation and expansion to this incredible story. People who are writing all these negative reviews are so egomaniacal they presume to tell GRRM where the story should go. In case you made it through the first 3 books and haven't realized this yet, GEORGE MARTIN COULDN'T GIVE A CHAMBER POT OF WASTE WHERE YOU THINK THE STORY SHOULD GO. The story that he chooses to tell is always far more emotional, and revealing of the inner natures of his characters. The man has a way of writing in people's minds that continues to dazzle. He seems at times like he is 1000 year old. Laying bare cliches and tiresome twists for genuinely moving explorations of the human condition. How dare you sit there basking in his awesomeness and complain about what parts of the incredible landscape of Westeros he chooses to focus on.
The thing I don't get it is how you could have followed the 'justice' given Ned Stark in Game of Thrones, and the Red Wedding of A Storm of Swords and NOW start complaining about where the story is going. Oh so you were just sitting there hoping that Robb Stark was gonna lose his War of the Five Kings right? You wanted Winterfell to be sacked and burned? You were happy when for 100 pages you believed Bran and Rickard brutally murdered?? But then if you were/are an intelligent person you see how incredibly honest and beautiful GRRMs plot really is. It doesn't conceal or distort life into what is typical of a novel. It presents people in their full nature. Now, to A Feast For Crows. Yes Jon Snow, Tyrion, and Dany are not in the book. Get over it. Seriously. There is so much carefully crafted and tight plotting in this book they are barely missed. I am not joking. It is a testament to how deep and complicated the world he has created is that he can focus on other parts of the realm and you barely miss those characters. As others have pointed out, this book is very much concerned with the aftermath of The War of the Five Kings. The devastation of lands and peoples emotions. The rising up of powers and the struggle to control the kingdom. In this book you get the missing pieces of the Lannister family puzzle. You understand how they were able to control the Iron Throne through the first 3 books and you see if they will be able to hold on to it. The relationship between Tywin and his children is even more apparent in this book even though he is gone. The Iron Islands are one of my new favorite parts of the whole story thanks to this book. Anyone who says the books don't need more characters doesn't understand at all what GRRM is going for. The struggle between the Tyrells and Martells is also gripping. This book breaks down the last bit of 'Oh A Song of Ice and Fire is about the Starks'. It's not about the Starks. GET OVER IT. It's about something much greater and more beautiful than one family. The starks were the way GRRM introduced us to Westeros. But what he has in store is, again, far more gripping and exciting than one familys struggle. I could go on but I'll stop. Read this book. Read A Dance with Dragons. Ignore the idiots who say that GRRM has 'lost the story'. GRRM has created something far beyond what their ignorant mind will grasp. Thank you Mr. Martin.
