It's a typical romance novel in most ways. She and he repeat themselves in speech and sex, their shallowness can be exasperating. I won't repeat what others have said they're mostly right about the story being great, and that if attention was paid to inconsistencies and repetition, it could have been one of the most unbelievable trilogies ever written. With that said, though, there is little that will stop me from devouring the third one. The NYTimes review talks about Ana being one-dimensional and him being abusive. But the world is full of immature abusive men and too trusting immature women, so to most of us this is not news, or even particularly shocking. And you might be tempted to say why is soft porn being put at the front of the store (as some are now doing)? Well think of it in context - compare it to the incredibly disturbing and violent images and story line of a "Saw" movie trailer one is surprised with on prime time television. I had bad dreams, and stopped watching that channel. They work through their problems, illuminating why certain things are abusive and others are simply awesome sex, and I feel this is exceptional. The author allows the characters to develop and use their experiences to change their lives. The amount of people who I've known who have healed and finally understood their own sexuality through Dominance/Submission, and often to find their soul mates, is staggering. I do understand why it's not for everyone, but glad that the concepts are becoming more mainstream and available to anyone who can download books or walk into a store.
