Stieg Larsson, James Patterson, Nora Roberts, Charlaine Harris. What do all these authors have in common? For starters they are all international bestselling authors. But more significantly they were the first members of the Kindle Million Club. The Kindle is Amazon's popular ebook reading device. Kindle owners can shop in Amazon's online bookstore directly from their Kindle. Any ebooks they purchase can be downloaded to the Kindle and available for reading within minutes. Customers who do not own a Kindle can still shop in the Kindle Store. They can download ebooks to read on their computer or on other electronic devices using special Kindle applications. What is the Kindle Million Club? According to Amazon, the Kindle Million Club recognizes authors whose entire body of work has sold over one million copies in Amazon's Kindle Store. The very first author to join this exclusive club was Stieg Larrson, author of the internationally bestselling Millennium Trilogy. His achievement was posthumous because he died in 2004. Who is in the Kindle Million Club? Stieg Larsson and James Patterson became the first two authors to sell over a million Kindle books, and the only two to reach this milestone during 2010. Stieg Larsson's novels include "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo", "The Girl Who Played With Fire", and "The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets' Nest". James Patterson is the author of more than 60 New York Times bestselling titles. In January 2011 Nora Roberts joined their ranks. With more than 300 million of her books in print it is not surprising to see her in the Kindle Million Club. Charlaine Harris, author of the True Blood vampire series, was the next member to join in May 2011 bringing the club's membership to four. While the club's membership growth was slow remember these authors had to sell a million books to get there. It is a remarkable achievement. In the meantime more people have been purchasing Kindles. Ebook sales have been rising. This forward momentum finally spilled over in June with multiple new Kindle Million Club members. Four new members reached this milestone in the first three weeks of the month. Lee Childs, author of the Jack Reacher series was the fifth member. Suzanne Collins, a highly successful children's writer not only of books but also of children's television, secured the sixth spot. They were followed by Michael Connelly who is the bestselling author of 23 novels.

The 8th author to join the club and the first self-published author to sell more than a million Kindle books was John Locke. His entry to the Kindle Million Club is evidence that even authors who have not gone through big publishing houses are able to achieve this level of success. Many more authors have started their journey towards this prestigious writer's club. With predictions of 20 million ereaders in consumer hands by the end of this year, in the United States alone, ebooks have amazing potential for future growth.
