Basem Hamid
Basem Hamid, an esteemed neurologist and pain medicine specialist, embarked on his medical journey at Damascus University, where he earned his M.D. His early academic success, including graduating as valedictorian from high school in Damascus, Syria, paved the way for his medical career, which began in earnest in 1995. After obtaining his medical degree, Basem Hamid, MD, advanced his training in the United States. Starting in 1996, he interned at Mount Sinai University Services in New York City. This was followed by an internal medicine and neurology residency at West Virginia University in Morgantown, WV, from 1997 to 2001. His commitment and expertise during his residency earned him the position of Chief Resident in the Department of Neurology, where he played a pivotal role in training new residents. With a growing interest in the complexities of pain, he pursued a fellowship in pain medicine at the University of Iowa's Department of Anesthesia in 2002 and completed it in 2003. This training deepened his understanding and management of chronic pain, cancer-related pain, and neuropathic pain, leading him to focus his career on this challenging medical field. Dr. Hamid has balanced private practice with academic roles throughout his career, significantly contributing to developing pain management programs. His tenure as an Assistant Professor at The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics from 2003 to 2006 helped shape the institution's approach to pain management. He later moved to Houston, Texas, where he continued his work at The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center enhances the quality of life for many patients with severe pain. In 2008, he founded Innova Pain Center in Houston, Texas, where he serves as Director. The center is dedicated to advanced pain management techniques for various conditions and sets new standards in care for patients with chronic pain.
