JULY EDITION 2015

Co-ops Grow Communities:

OCTOBER IS CO-OP MONTH!

Celebrating Co-op Month 2016 Co-ops around the world share a set of guiding principles with Basics, including “cooperation among cooperatives” and “concern for community.” When you purchase food and other goods at the co-op, you’re supporting a business that cares about people and contributes to a livable, sustainable community.

OCTOBER 2016 EDITION Your co-op ownership investment does not end up in the hands of a CEO, or wealthy shareholders, or the co-op board (they’re volunteers). That investment goes straight into the co-op itself, which YOU now own along with over 6,000 of your Janesville-area neighbors. What you do with it is then up to you, through your votes for Board (or choosing to run for Board), voting for Wooden Nickel non-profits, your shopping habits and your communication with co-op staff. This month, Basics is also proud to join with nearly 150 other food co-ops around the country to celebrate the many stories of how cooperative companies, suppliers, manufacturers and farmers are growing strong, healthy communities around the world. When you not only shop at the co-op but also look for cooperatively produced products, your impact grows exponentially! (continued, p.2)

Becoming an Owner at the co-op takes you a step further. When you make your Owner investment, you become part of a growing movement of people who believe the power should be kept in the hands of the people and that together, we accomplish more.

(Co-ops Grow Communities, contd.) Each of the participating companies in this year’s cause promotion work with cooperative suppliers and manufacturers or are cooperatives themselves, and as such, work to build strong bonds between the people who purchase their products and the people who supply them. Co-ops offer a way to transform how business is typically done; they give you the opportunity to get the products and services you need on a daily basis while strengthening the community around you. Participating companies include Alaffia, Alter Eco, Divine Chocolate, Dr. Bronner’s, Equal Exchange, Guayaki, Organic Valley, and Theo Chocolate. These companies along with National Co+op Grocers are aiming to raise $80,000 for the La Riojana Co-op, an Argentinian producer of wine and olive oil. Through their cooperative business model, La Riojana has been able to significantly improve the well-being of their member communities. With the funds raised, La Riojana Co-op can obtain organic certification for almost two villages, which equates to 80-95 growers.

Did You Know? What is the difference between “pure”, “organic” and “therapeutic grade” essential oils? Many essential oils on the marketplace are traded through distributors or brokers and pass through many hands before reaching a retail store. These oils are often adulterated with substances that “boost” or “extend” one or more of the fragrant properties in the oil. One liter of pure, organic lavender is sold for around $300. On the other hand, a liter of synthetic or adulterated oil is sold from $10 to $60. One can see why boosting and extending a true oil to increase profit margins might be a seductive choice. Adulterated oils can cause short term side effects such as rashes, burning or other irritations. It is unknown what long term effects synthetically treated oils have on human physiology. When an essential oil is labeled “organic,” this certification ensures that the plants were farmed, harvested, distilled and distributed according to organic methods. Following organic farming methods ensures that oils are free of pesticides, synthetics and adulterants. Therapeutic grade refers to essential oils that are safe to consume for medicinal purposes. There is no certifying agency in the U.S. for therapeutic grade essential oils, so it is “buyer beware” if you see this claim. As oils considered therapeutic in Europe are held to a much higher standard, Basics chooses to carry ECOCERT certified Veriditas Botanicals essential oils for an organic therapeutic option. Basics is also proud to offer NOW and Aura Cacia pure, unadulterated essential oils with no synthetic ingredients for your aromatherapy purposes.
