BASILDON Council tenants are being offered extra incentives to downsize their homes to free up properties for families in need. The financial assistance scheme, which has been running since December 2013, has already helped 57 families to downsize. The enhancements came into effect on 1 June 2015. Basildon Council leader Phil Turner said: “Enhanced payments to help families
downsize their homes is just one of the ways the council is looking to improve its housing stock to fit the needs of local residents. “Other features highlighted on page 13 of this edition include the successful completion of the £120,000 improvement project for tenants in Lee Chapel North; and the introduction of the Tenant Scrutiny Panel which scrutinises our performance, investigates complaints and identifies areas for
improvement.” Cllr Tony Hedley, cabinet member for housing, said: “We want to make the best possible use of the housing stock we already have to ensure there are homes available for families who need them the most. “Downsizing not only helps families who need the extra room but it can also help meet the personal needs of those who no longer want a large property. “Moving can be expensive
but with these enhancements we are further easing the cost burden of moving home while freeing up much needed council housing for those in need of a roof over their heads.” The enhanced scheme has increased the incentive payment from £1,000 to £1,500 for tenants downsizing from a two bed property to a one bed or studio bedsit property. WITH over 12,000 residents, Billericay West ward is the fourth largest ward by population within Basildon borough. A semi-rural area known for its open spaces, the ward is represented by three local councillors: Cllr Phil Turner, leader of Basildon Council, Cllr Tony Hedley, cabinet member for Housing and Community Safety, and Cllr Danny Lawrence, deputy Mayor of Basildon borough.
Ward councillors hold drop-in surgeries every last Saturday of the month (except December) between 10.30am and noon at Billericay Library for residents to discuss concerns Billericay West ward boasts of a number of parks and leisure facilities for the family to enjoy. The 40 acre leisure facility, Lake Meadows, features playing fields, crazy golf, a bowling green, tennis court and children’s’ play area plus more. EVEN MORE PRIDE IN YOUR AREA
Pride team
LOOK out for Basildon Council’s deep clean team – a Pride in Your Area Day could be coming to you soon. Council teams will visit small areas and concentrate on deep cleaning, removing graffiti, cleaning up alleyways and allowing residents to place out large and bulky items for free collection. This is the sixth year the council has run the Pride in Your Area days. Last year 12 were held yielding hundreds of tonnes of rubbish and recycling from
across the borough. This year the service has been expanded to allow 26 events to be held on Saturdays. Clean-ups have already taken place in Vange, Pitsea, Lee Chapel North and Nethermayne, so if you have not had a visit, keep a lookout for information – all areas covered will receive a leaflet through the door prior to the event. Cllr Terri Sargent, cabinet member for the environment and community, said: “This is a chance for residents to spruce up their neighbourhood and it really shows how much pride we all take in our area. “So far about 64,000 properties have benefited from a deep clean to their area. The days are well-received by those who live in the areas covered, and they allow us to provide a noticeable improvement within the borough.”
Also within the ward is Hannakins Farm Community Centre in the Queens Park area, on Rosebay Avenue. Home to many local clubs including football, running, netball, badminton, bowls, aerobics and dance, martial arts and more, the centre also caters for older residents with its Circle 50 and Over 50s exercise groups. For more information on the centre’s activities call 01277 630851. Another feature of the ward is Queens Park Country Park which is set over 60 acres of parkland. The park is home to a wide variety of wildlife, allowing visitors to roam widely across the park via its extensive footpath system, and it is increasingly becoming a popular location for bird watching enthusiasts. As part of the council’s commitment to keeping the ward and the wider borough clean, the Crunch service will be in Billericay West this summer. Crunch is a mobile tip allowing you to get rid of bulkier household waste for free. Available most Saturdays, between 9am and noon, it moves to a different location each week within the borough. At many locations there are also separate vehicles for all your garden refuse. As with the normal weekly refuse collection please ensure all sharp objects such as broken glass, needles and bits of metal are wrapped up before putting them in your refuse sacks.
For more information on the Crunch service call 01268 533333 or visit www. basildon.gov.uk/crunch

EXCITING NEWS FOR LAINDON RESIDENTS SWAN Housing Group has announced the long overdue regeneration of Laindon Shopping Centre. As residents will no doubt be aware, the existing public spaces are dated, poor quality and no longer fit the needs of the local community. The existing commercial facilities do not offer local people or local retailers an attractive place to shop or work with a large number of retail units currently standing empty, some having been so for decades. Leader of Basildon Council, Cllr Phil Turner, said: “I am delighted that Swan Housing Group has made this bold move and believe they have the skills to deliver a quality development that will leave a legacy in Laindon. This is the first and most important step forward in the regeneration of Laindon and I will be encouraging the team to consult residents about the master plan for the area so together we can develop proposals that the community will be proud of.” Geoff Pearce, Swan’s Executive Director of Regeneration and Development said: “We look forward to working with Basildon
Laindon Shopping Centre
Borough Council, existing retailers, and, critically, local people who are passionate about the regeneration of Laindon, to finally bring Laindon the central facilities it needs”. Swan believes the regeneration also offers the opportunity to bring much needed housing, particularly for younger people wanting to get on the housing ladder. The housing group recently celebrated its 20th anniversary and over the past two decades has worked in the Basildon area
WICKFORD PLANS TO BE RE-SUBMITTED BASILDON Council has resubmitted plans for a £2m health facility in Market Road, Wickford that will boast eight examination rooms and three treatment rooms increasing the number of available GPs in the area. This project is also being supported by Essex County Council which has provided £500,000 of grant funding to support the scheme. Basildon Council is acting as developer and landlord for the scheme, which is part of the continuing regeneration of the town centre. Upon completion, the London Road Surgery will move into the new health facility, enabling it to become a training practice to develop the next generation of doctors. Cllr Richard Moore, Basildon Council’s cabinet member for regeneration and planning, said: “This is great news for Wickford and our residents. The new facility will provide vital public services and positively impact on the town’s wider regeneration improvements. “We are committed to
improving Wickford and the lives of our residents. “This much needed facility will benefit local people by raising their aspirations and Artist impression of new GP surgery expectation for better health provision as back into use. well as being a major part of Cllr Phil Turner, Leader our successful investment and of Basildon Council, said: regeneration programme for “Wickford residents are Wickford.” proud of their town and In addition to the consultation of their high street and we and examination rooms, are happy to support them the plans include treatment, by providing the massive interview and training rooms investment needed to keep as well as modern reception our community vibrant. and waiting areas. “Wickford’s regeneration is The business case for the a priority for the Council and facility provides for one extra the health facility is the latest GP and will help the surgery in a long line of improvements meet the criteria for training designed to meet the needs practice status. of our community.” Dr Janki Persaud, a GP from To make way for the scheme London Road Surgery, said: and help increase town centre “We are delighted with the footfall, the market has been project and its progression improved and moved to and are looking forward to Market Lane together with developing our service in the the new public square in the new premises.” high street. Although it will take time to develop proposals for the regeneration, Swan is also developing plans to improve the shopping experience for local residents as soon as possible. They will do this by tackling issues such as the pigeon infestation, litter, grounds maintenance and the general appearance of the centre. Local residents will be consulted on the regeneration plans as they are developed.
NEW AWARD TO GET STUDENTS WORK READY BASILDON Council and Essex County Council are working together to roll out a new scheme aimed at helping school leavers get work ready. Endorsed by the Institute of Directors, Federation of Small Businesses and Essex Chambers, the Employability for Life Charter and Charter Plus awards aim to have all participating school leavers understand and achieve the levels of behaviour, aptitude and attitude required by employers when committing to investing in young people. The number of students undertaking the award in the current academic year has significantly increased to over 2,000 Year 11, 12 and 13 students. Cllr Phil Turner, leader of Basildon Council, said: “The Employability for Life Charter and Charter Plus awards were set
up to get businesses, schools and their students working together to raise the standards of employability in those leaving school and college, for the benefit of both employers and young people. “If, through an organisation’s recruitment processes, a young person is identified to have achieved the awards, employers will know that this person has accomplished the recognised standards in commitment, professional conduct, motivation, attendance and punctuality. The Charter Plus award also includes teamwork and leadership skills.” To find out more about the award, or to engage with schools/colleges to support the requirements of the charters, contact Sam Terrell at sam. terrell@basildon.gov.uk or Tracy Eve at tracy.eve@ essex.gov.uk

SUMMER 2015
Borough’s regeneration progressing BASILDON borough’s economy is growing, particularly in the engineering and technology sector. To ensure continued expansion and job creation, Basildon Council has been instrumental in seeking opportunities for local businesses in new markets. This includes trade missions to India, and the appointment of an officer dedicated to helping Basildon-based companies do business abroad. TRADE MISSION TO INDIA
India, the fastest growing global economy, has an ambitious development programme which includes building 100 new ‘smart cities’. As a new town, Basildon can offer expertise and experience, particularly in public services such as housing and waste management. In May, the Council’s chief executive Bala Mahendran led a trade mission to India to showcase the expertise and skills base of Basildon companies. These included Basildon-based Enviro Comms and Prospects College of Advanced Technologies (PROCAT). The council has been working closely with PROCAT on
shaping courses that will address the skills needs of local business and the college commissioned the council to promote it at the India conference. Because of its established reputation for providing a high standard of public services, the council was asked to take part in the development programme in India. It has already signed a trade deal with Aluva, a new city in South India, with more agreements set to follow. The talks resulted in an agreement for the council to act as consultant on key public services, and it has been invited to join a consortium with international engineering company WS Atkins, a major player in the smart cities development. Bala Mahendran said: “Our growing links with India have had very positive results and they open more possibilities for companies in Basildon to expand abroad, which means more potential jobs. The council has also reached a consultancy deal. This is excellent news as it will bring in revenue that we can use to improve the services we offer to the people of Basildon.” Neil Bates, chief executive of PROCAT said: “This is very exciting for the college,
with the potential for apprenticeships and the chance for students to expand their skills and employment prospects.” HELPING COMPANIES DO BUSINESS ABROAD
The council has also appointed Karthik Durgaprasad as its new senior international development officer to help companies develop their business within UK and internationally. Karthik has 15 years of commercial and public sector experience assisting growth potential, and for the past ten years he has worked on business support and economic development initiatives in the Essex and London areas for organisations like Barking and Dagenham Council, Greater London Enterprise and Haringey Business Development Agency. He has successfully delivered growth programmes for aspiring SMEs and hopes to achieve and provide the same for Basildon borough based companies. Cllr Phil Turner, Leader of Basildon Council, said: “As part of the council’s promise to support local businesses, helping local Small and Medium Enterprises identify new markets overseas is vital if they are to sustain and grow their business. The employment
opportunities generated by these companies is vital for the future sustainability and regeneration of our borough. “Karthik will identify potential business owners and provide support and advice to make companies ‘Export Ready’. “He will also assist with finding government grants and specialist advice to conduct market research, participate in overseas trade fairs and sector delegations, pay for due diligence and secure intellectual property.” There will be a special focus on helping companies win business abroad through a network of UK and EU funded partners located overseas in Europe and India. The service provided will also aim to connect local businesses with other business development opportunities provided by the council, its partners locally and through Essex County Council. Another focus will be marketing the expertise of the council to the programme of building new ‘smart cities’ in India to generate revenue for the council. To discuss your company’s international expansion plans, contact Karthik at karthik.durgaprasad@basildon.gov.uk or call 01268 294825.
COUNCIL PREPARES FOR TOUGH TIMES AHEAD COUNCILS have faced severe financial challenges in the past few years, and Basildon has not escaped the pressures felt nationwide. Further tough times still lie ahead. The main funding the council receives from Government has been cut to less than half what it was five years ago. This has meant the council having to change the way it works to make savings, while still protecting local services and minimising staff reductions. It has achieved this through efficiencies in how it spends its money by providing services differently, and by working with
others to reduce costs. Basildon Council has said it will get the basics right and that means it will protect those services that matter most to local people. Despite funding cuts, it has continued investment in the community. This has included new and improved leisure facilities, improvements to our parks and open spaces, funding for a whole range of community groups and projects, free weekend parking and support of regeneration projects in Basildon, Billericay, Wickford, Pitsea and Laindon town centres. However, the harsh truth is that we still face further challenges.
Government funding is likely to reduce significantly further in the next few years. Cllr Stuart Sullivan, cabinet member responsible for resources, said: “We have done well and up to now residents have not felt the impact of the reduced funding. But we face some tough decisions and we have got to be honest with residents. We know that
communities working with us will be key to protecting services. “I am very grateful for the effort of our staff, who have worked so

Reading and Numbers Volunteers needed BASILDON Borough schools are looking for reading and/or numbers partner volunteers to help some of their young pupils improve their literacy and/or numeracy skills. Supported by Basildon Council and Basildon Education Services Trust, the Reading and Numbers Partners Scheme provides schools with an additional resource to support pupils with their reading and numeracy while helping to raise their aspirations. These partners can be people from the world of work, retired or looking for work, who can give up some of their time to help a young person improve their reading or numeracy skills. Through this scheme, volunteers visit a school every week to read with a pupil. Since the scheme started in the borough, business volunteers from companies such
as Selex ES, Palmers Solicitors, Basildon Council and Jobcentre Plus have signed up for the initiative. Lara Murray from Palmers Solicitors is a volunteer in the scheme. She said: “Each school year, a new student is selected by teachers for me to read with so that I can help them blossom into better readers. They might, for example, be struggling with their reading or need extra one-toone support and encouragement. “If only more volunteers from local businesses would come forward this would make a huge difference across Basildon borough.” For more information about the Reading or Numbers Partners scheme, contact Sam Terrell at Basildon Council by emailing sam. terrell@basildon.gov.uk or call 01268 294057.

BEWARE OF SCAMS Have you received scam mail through your door recently? The likelihood is that you probably have. Scam mail is sent by fraudsters, often from overseas, to vulnerable people to try to persuade them to part with money by tempting them with ‘cash prizes’. These scams can result in considerable financial loss to the victims. In addition to debt problems, the impact of scams on individuals causes severe mental and physical health deterioration. Victims often feel a loss of confidence, self-worth, depression and guilt. Essex Trading Standards is working with The National Scams Team (NST) as part of a nationwide initiative to identify individuals who are repeat victims of scams. During the course of their work the NST has obtained a list with over 100,000 names on it, including nearly 3,000 Essex residents who are regularly responding to scam mail. Officers from Essex Trading Standards are carrying out home visits throughout the County to victims on the list, offering advice and support on
how to stop becoming a repeat victim of these fraudsters. The most common scams that officers are warning residents to be aware of include: Lottery and Prize Draw Scams Two of the most common scams are lottery and prize draw scams. Victims are told they have won a large cash prize, but are asked to pay an ‘administration’ fee in order to release it. Remember, no genuine lottery or competition would ask you to send money in order to claim a prize. Clairvoyant Scams Clairvoyant scammers make letters very personal. The letters often appear to be handwritten and use the victim’s first name repeatedly throughout the letter, to appear friendly and gain their trust. They show false concern for the victim and pretend they can offer the reader friendship, good health, wealth and happiness.
The clairvoyant scammers often blackmail the victim by saying that “bad luck will befall you or your family if you don’t pay up”.
Catalogue and Brochure Scams Scammers send out catalogues selling a wide variety of products including luxury foods, vitamin pills, cosmetic products, jewellery and clothing. They guarantee a prize to those who order, but the prize is never sent. Instead they send out more goods, making promises about winning an even bigger prize with your next order. These types of scams are often time limited which puts pressure on the potential victim to reply quickly. Once the letters are replied to, personal details are often shared with other scam companies and residents who respond can then be bombarded with similar scam mailings. Please keep an eye on vulnerable neighbours, family or friends to help prevent them becoming victims of these types of scams.
The advice from Essex Trading Standards is not to respond to anything which has the hallmarks of a scam and we would encourage residents to forward any suspicious letters to the Royal Mail Scams Department, Freepost, Scam Mail, PO Box 797, Exeter, EX1 9UN or report the information to Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040. For more information about scams and how to avoid them, visit the Think Jessica website, set up by a woman whose elderly mother was the victim of scammers, or call the Citizens Advice Consumer Helpline on 08454 040506.
VANGE COMMUNITY SAFETY ACTION ZONE ENDS The Vange ward was identified as a Community Safety Action Zone (CSAZ) area in July 2014 and work began with partners to tackle residents’ local issues and concerns. A number of successful projects have taken place, including Neighbourhood Watch joint canvassing days with Essex Police. To date, four new watches have been established in Vange. These watches will increase community spirit and provide valuable information to the local policing teams. A Junior Warden scheme to encourage model behaviour was delivered to 113 Year 5 pupils in Greenstead Junior and Bardfield Primary Schools. The scheme saw partners attending weekly sessions to raise awareness around issues such as bullying, water safety and anti-social behaviour.
Vange Job Club
A job club was created and so far over 50 residents have attended. So far 14 people have been helped back into work, training or apprenticeships. The job club continues to take place every Monday from 1pm
to 4pm in Vange Library; all residents in Vange are welcome to attend. Targeted police activity to tackle crime across the ward in the area has seen a 53% reduction in dwelling burglaries compared with
the same period last year. Work will continue over the summer with a number of crime prevention awareness days, which will see shed/garage alarms and advice being given out to residents.
Together Against Crime Have Your Say The annual Together against Crime event will be taking place in Basildon Town Centre on Tuesday 28 July from 10am to 4pm. This is a great opportunity for you to meet with members of the partnership and allows you to express your views on crime and anti-social behaviour. You can also have your say via our online survey. The survey will be available from Tuesday 21 July to Tuesday 11 August 2015 and can be found on Basildon Council’s Community Safety webpage: www.basildon. gov.uk/csp

CUSTOMER SERVICE CENTRE FACELIFT
New ‘break out’ desks in Customer Service Centre
BASILDON Council’s customer services centre (CSC) has been undergoing a facelift to improve its service to residents.
These changes have been made to help reduce queuing times and provide a more informal approach to customer
service for residents, with improving customer satisfaction. The old interview desks have been moved back and opened up, making the space brighter and less formal. The dividers are still in place for people to keep privacy if needed but the openness also creates space for future partnership working with other organisations. Basildon Council’s cabinet member responsible for customer services, Cllr Terri Sargent, said: “The council is committed to new ways of working which will provide value for money for our residents, one of our five promises. “In these times of local government
CREATING OPPORTUNITY FOR YOUNG APPRENTICES APPRENTICESHIPS offered by Basildon Council provide the chance for young people to ‘earn and learn’ in a wide range of jobs and sectors. It is all about developing skills, experience and qualifications and an excellent way of gaining qualifications and building a career path. As an apprentice at Basildon Council you will gain knowledge of specific departments within the council and study for an NVQ level 2 in Business Administration. This is a one year fixed term opportunity. To qualify you need to be aged between 16 and 24 (at the point of starting the scheme) and have a minimum of three GCSEs (A - C including English and Maths or equivalent). Deadline for applications is Monday 6 July 2015. For more information go to the career and vacancies page at www.basildon.gov.uk
cuts it means we need better ties with external organisations so that we can work closer and efficiently to lower our costs while increasing customer satisfaction. “Over time we hope to house more of our external partners, as we currently do with the Citizens Advice Bureau and the Social Justice Coaches. This will make it easier for customers to access many services under one roof.” The new ‘break out’ desks enable Revenue and Benefit advisors to take less complex enquiries directly. This more informal approach should make queuing times considerably lower and improve satisfaction for all customers. Over the summer more self-serve computers will also be introduced to the area. The eight computers currently in use are very popular and more will be needed as demand increases and more services go online. There are also future plans to introduce Department of Work and Pensions services to these computers so a visit to the Basildon Centre can be a one stop shop for those who need to access both facilities at the same time.

TOWNGATE THEATRE – THE PLACE TO BE IN BASILDON!
THE Towngate Theatre in Basildon has enjoyed a stellar start to 2015 – and things look set to go from strength to strength! With over 75,000 people through the doors in the past 12 months, the Towngate really has become an integral part of Basildon’s entertainment, culture and leisure industry. The acclaimed new season lineup has resulted in fantastic sales and generated unanimous positive reactions to the innovative bright and fresh brochure design. The variety of productions has also been vastly improved, and now includes a range of quality dramas, comedies, ballets, operas, music acts and children’s shows. The demand for tickets has become so great that the Box Office opening times have been extended to 6pm every weekday. The stylish and modern Café Bar caters for all occasions, and has a bustling atmosphere throughout the day and into the popular pre-show
dining hours. This has enabled the Café to become a very popular and friendly meeting place. Theatre Manager, Anne-Marie Woodley, says: “We are thrilled with the positive response we have received from our new brochure design and upcoming productions. We are so pleased that word is spreading through Essex that the Towngate Theatre is an innovative arts and culture destination, with more people visiting than ever before. The Towngate is a fantastic addition to the town of Basildon, offering something for everyone and we are very proud to be able to provide first class music, comedy, dance, drama and family entertainment, right on your doorstep!” For more information on upcoming productions, contact the box office on 01268 465465 or visit www.towngatetheatre.co.uk. KEEPING SAFE THIS SUMMER WHILE the long summer days provide the perfect opportunities for going out and having fun, it is all the more important for residents to stay safe.

Pollen levels can rise over the hot summer months so those with allergies need to be careful. Did you know alcohol makes hayfever symptoms worse as beer, wine and spirits contain histamine, the chemical that sets off allergies? Long exposure to the sun can lead to health problems such as sun stroke or dehydration, and in extreme cases skin cancer. Try to always spend time in the shade between the hours of 11am and 3pm as this is when the sun is strongest, and wear a hat, t-shirt and sunglasses during these hours. Cancer Research UK recommends using at least a factor 15 sunscreen with a high star rating which should be applied regularly and generously.
Saturday 19 September Wickford Carnival Procession starts from 1pm at Runwell Park and finish at Nevendon Park Fete at 5pm
PIECES of Basildon’s history have been unveiled to mark the 70th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day, and the World War I centenary. To signify the end of WWII in Europe, the Basildon Civil & Military Partnership unveiled the Billericay War Diary at the Basildon Centre, St Martin’s Square in May. This diary provides an historic record of events that took place across the Basildon borough during WWII. The War Diary cabinet is available for the public to view in the ground floor reception area near the lifts. Meanwhile in June, the Basildon Borough 1914-1918 Commemorative Roll of Honour was unveiled in St
Martin’s Church. The book which details 382 residents of the Borough who tragically lost their lives in the Great War is now on permanent display in the Memorial Corridor which leads to Lady Chapel. This book, presented to the church last year as part of the centenary of WWI is open to the general public to view Monday to Thursday from 9am to 11am, Friday from 9am to 1pm, Saturday from 10am to 1pm, and from noon on Sundays. Friends and Relatives are welcome to visit the Lady Chapel for private reflection and to light a candle in memory of those who gave their lives for the nation’s freedom.

For those who work outside for long periods, sunscreen should be applied at all times. Sixty people die from skin cancer caused by sun exposure at work every year so although you may not be on holiday, you should still protect your skin.
The Place is the perfect venue for all types of celebrations.
If out swimming this summer please ensure you always swim at supervised sites and with friends and family so that if you need to help each other, you can. There are about 260 accidental drowning deaths in inland waters in Britain each year, so it is important to stay aware and think about what you will do if something goes wrong.

GRANT’S SET ON IMPROVING LIVES
Improving Lives award winner Grant Taylor
GRANT Taylor, Basildon Council’s Community Development Officer, was especially proud to receive the prestigious ‘Improving Lives’ award, as chosen by local residents, at this year’s Basildon Council Staff Awards. Grant works with the council’s Housing Landlord Services team and was singled out for his tireless efforts in helping to make the Basildon Family Project become a reality. The project comprises a community café, a work/job club and provides an excellent meeting place/venue for local groups such as the computer advice club. It has also acted as a springboard in helping people to find new, full-time careers.
FREE MICROCHIPPING EVENTS FOR YOUR DOG THE Dogs Trust is holding free microchipping events for unchipped dogs in Basildon borough this summer. Supported by Basildon Council, these events aim to tackle the growing problem of stray dogs roaming the streets. They can also help residents save money on the cost of the microchipping procedure before the government brings in
mandatory rules next April for all dogs to be chipped. At these events dog owners will also have the opportunity to get free neutering and health check vouchers as well as free advice on dog care, training and ownership, plus the chance to pick up free dog waste bags. For further information please email citydogs@dogstrust.org.uk or call 0207 837 0006.
EVENT DATES: • Thursday 9 July 2015: 11am to 4pm – Peterborough Way, Craylands Estate, Basildon, SS14 3QE • Wednesday 19 August 2015: 11am to 4pm - Gloucester Park, Basildon, Near to fishing lakes
In nominating Grant for the award, the resident said: “The local community has really taken ownership of the project, and volunteers have learned new skills that have enabled them to move into full time employment. “Grant attended many meetings out of hours, and I honestly don’t know how he juggled all of the emails. His enthusiasm, kind nature and determination to see the project through cannot be understated. “He continues to be there for the Wickford Community Projects team and I truly believe the Basildon Family Project would not have got off the ground without his input and ongoing support.” The recipient of the ‘Improving Lives’
award is decided by public vote and is awarded to the employee or team whose work over the last twelve months has significantly helped to improve the lives of local people. Grant was presented with his award by Lee McClellan, partner at Palmers Solicitors, Basildon. Mr McClellan said: “We chose the Improving Lives award as the award which most directly recognises the impact that the Council and its staff have on the local community. “We support the Council’s desire to recognise the efforts of its staff and extend our congratulations to Grant Taylor for winning this hotly fought category.”
WE’RE SUPPORTING MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS LAST year Basildon Council’s chief executive, Bala Mahendran, signed the Time to Change pledge to end mental health discrimination in the workplace. As an organisation the council knows mental health issues can affect anyone and wants to end the stigma around this. Over the past year staff have been taking part in various activities to raise awareness, including themed cake sales. If you or anyone in your community has been arranging activities to support

CASH TO DOWNSIZE YOUR HOME Continued from front page...
There is also an enhanced payment of £300 for those moving to sheltered accommodation and £150 for those moving into a studio/bedsit. For the first time since the downsizing
scheme was launched, the council has also included incentives for those moving through mutual exchange. These incentives include removal of belongings undertaken by the council’s appointed removal company as well as a property decoration pack suitable for the size of property being exchanged to.
The council will also provide assistance in some cases with carpets up to the value of £200 under the mutual exchange incentive, if the tenant is downsizing into a one bed/studio bedsit property. However, this part of the scheme only applies to tenants currently
under-occupying a property, who are exchanging to a property that would not result in additional bedrooms above their assessed housing need. To find out more about the enhanced scheme visit www.basildon.gov.uk/ housing or contact the council’s Housing Choice Team on 01268 533333.
IMPROVING AND MAINTAINING COUNCIL HOMES BASILDON Council tenants in Lee Chapel North are benefiting from new refuse, storage and drying facilities following the completion of a £120,000 improvement project. Basildon Council’s contractors carried out the works following recommendations from the estate’s Residents Cleaning Inspection group. The project in Great Knightleys included the renewal of refuse storage, drying areas and general storage facilities for residents. Resident only access to communal areas was also introduced as well as a new seating area, block paving and trees. Long life glass reinforced plastic doors

Cllr Tony Hedley, cabinet member for housing, said: “We’ve made a commitment to not only build more homes but to maintain and improve our existing properties and estates. This is further evidence of how well we can work with the community. “This project was devised by a group of residents with support of the people who live there. It will make a positive impact on the appearance of the estate as well as making it more functional for residents.” Meet the Tenant Scrutiny Panel The Tenant Scrutiny Panel has been introduced to scrutinise performance,

Save time and money with our new customer web chat RESIDENTS can now save time and money by speaking to a Basildon Council customer advisor via a new online chat service. When accessing the homepage of the council’s website, www. basildon.gov.uk, during office hours, visitors will see the new feature in the top right corner of their screen. Through this feature, customers are now able to chat to a customer service advisor eliminating the need to wait on hold on
the phone or, in many cases, coming in to the Basildon Centre. This new service also reduces the waiting time for an emailed response as the live chat allows an instantaneous response. The government’s Localism Act has changed the way in which tenants and residents can hold their landlords to account. New empowerment standards contained in the Localism Act will enable tenants and leaseholders to ‘scrutinise their provider’s performance, identify areas for improvement, and influence future delivery’. To encourage this, the Panel meet regularly to undertake this new scrutiny role on behalf of all tenants and leaseholders from across the Borough.

SCAM WARNING GOES OUT TO PENSIONERS Basildon Borough CAB reports five common types of scams targeting pensioners: MOVING SAVINGS INTO A NEW ‘PENSION’ Scammers charge pensioners high fees for moving their pension but nothing happens; the money is moved without their permission; or the pensioner agrees the move then the money goes missing or is transferred to fraudulent schemes. FAKE INVESTMENT OPPORTUNITIES People are told by scammers they can get more out of their savings by investing in pricey goods, like wine, or ‘revolutionary’ new products or projects. OFFERING FREE ‘ADVICE’ AND SUPPORT Scammers offer ‘free’ pensions advice or a review of the victim’s savings, which can cost money and be useless or may just be a cover for obtaining crucial personal details. CHARGING A FEE FOR A DODGY SERVICE People are offered services for a fee. In some cases no service is provided at all, whereas in others a service is provided but it is either expensive or not in the consumer’s best interest.
GETTING PERSONAL INFORMATION FROM PEOPLE Using phishing techniques to contact people by email or over the phone, scammers get victims to give them personal data, like their National Insurance number and bank account. Sometimes the con will use information such as the person’s employer or pension provider.
SCAMS ADVICE • Tell someone else about a possible scam, an unsolicited phone call or text, or offer of money • Never give out your bank details or send money unless you are certain you can trust the person who has asked you to do this • Don’t feel pressured to make a decision straight away, instead take your time • Seek advice – you can call the Citizens Advice consumer service on 03454 04 05 06 • Report a potential scam to Citizens Advice or to Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040. HOW TO GET HELP FROM PENSION WISE: People approaching retirement with a defined contribution pension pot will be able to get help from Pension Wise: • via the Government’s pensions website: www.pensionwise.gov.uk • by telephone by calling 030 0330 1001 • by contacting any CAB for a free face to face guidance session.
