CONCERTS
THURS 29 JUNE
QUEYRAS PLAYS BACH
4pm, Kilrenny Church. £20/15*, 70 min
KURTÁG Selection from Signs, Games and Messages
ANON (MARAIS?) Les Regrets
SAYGUN Partita for Cello, Op. 31
MARAIS La Rêveuse
J S BACH Suite in Cm for Cello, BWV 1011
Jean-Guihen Queyras cello
Queyras opens ENF23 in the lovely, sunlit interior of Kilrenny Church with a characteristically rich, fascinating programme dotting between the 18th and 20th centuries. Opening with Kurtág’s intense miniatures and culminating in Bach’s towering 5th Suite, this will be a mesmerising hour of music in the company of one of the world’s leading cellists.
BELCEA & FRIENDS 1
7.30pm, Crail Church
£30/20*, 105 min inc. interval
LISZT Les Années de Pélérinage (selection)
BRAHMS Sextet No 1 in B-flat, Op. 18
Belcea Quartet
Diyang Mei viola
Jean-Guihen Queyras cello
Bertrand Chamayou piano
The Belcea Quartet return to ENF with their ‘dream team’ of fellow musicians to play solo, duo, quartet and sextet over the course of the festival. Their starting points are the two sextets by Brahms – big pieces, heroic, tender, ethereal and passionate by turns – just wonderful chamber music. In two concerts (see also Friday 7.30) we hear them alongside virtuoso piano music from Bertrand Chamayou. We know that Brahms and Liszt had little time for each other (Brahms reputedly fell asleep at a Liszt concert, while Liszt once called Brahms’ music ‘hygienic’) but we think they make a pretty good combination!
FRIDAY 30 JUNE
CASTALIAN QUARTET
11.30am, Kilrenny Church
£25/17*, 70 min
MOZART Quartet in Dm, K.421
DVOŘÁK Quartet in G, Op. 106
The Observer described a Castalian Quartet concert as ‘…full of poetry, joy and sorrow’, which could perfectly describe this programme. Dvořák called Mozart ‘sweet sunshine’, but in fact Mozart is the one in intense and dramatic mood while Dvořák himself supplies many sunny, happy moments, even if they are tempered with darker moods. A compelling combination from this superb quartet.
YEOL EUM SON
4pm, Crail Church. £20/15*, 70 min
MOZART Fantasy in Cm, K. 475
JANÁČEK Sonata 1.X.1905
From the Street
MOZART Sonata in Cm, K. 457
KAPUSTIN Sonata No. 2
Son is so well known for her wonderful Mozart playing, so we asked her to juxtapose him with very different masterworks – Janáček’s impassioned tribute to a hero of Czech nationalism and Kapustin’s show-stopping jazz–classical fusion.
PATRON RECEPTION
6.30pm, Crail. Invitations to follow
BELCEA & FRIENDS 2
7.30pm, Crail Church
£30/20*, 105 min inc. interval
DEBUSSY Selection of solo piano works
BRAHMS Sextet No. 2 in G, Op. 36
Belcea Quartet
Diyang Mei viola
Jean-Guihen Queyras cello
Bertrand Chamayou piano
Brahms may have concealed a sorrowful love story in his second sextet: one motif represents the woman he almost married… and then didn’t. It opens with a tenderly ethereal whisper and ends with some of the most exhilarating music he ever wrote.
Chamayou, perhaps the leading French pianist of the moment, offers a selection of Debussy solo piano music before the interval.
SAT 1 JULY
CASTALIAN QUARTET 2
11.30am, Kilrenny Church
£25/17*, 70 min
HAYDN Quartet in D, Op. 20, No.4
SIBELIUS Voces Intimae, Op. 56
The Castalian Quartet brings together the man who wrote 68 quartets with another who wrote just one mature quartet. It is hard to imagine two more different musical personalities than Haydn and Sibelius and as a result, this morning’s programme offers fantastic proof (if it were needed) of the sheer richness of the quartet repertoire.
BACH AND BEYOND
3pm, Crail Church
£25/20*, 105 min inc. interval
J S BACH Suite for Solo Cello in G, BWV 1007 (arr. for viola)
TABAKOVA Pirin
J S BACH Works arranged for solo accordion
YSAŸE Sonata in Am for Two Violins
Corina Belcea violin
Krzysztof Chorzelski viola
Vilde Frang violin
Diyang Mei viola
Sofia Ros accordion
A proper one-off Festival treat this, as some of our finest musicians come together to offer an eclectic and spectacular afternoon of music. Bach is at its heart, both in his own music and in the work of later musicians he has influenced, culminating in the magnificent showpiece that is Ysaÿe’s Sonata for Two Violins.

BELCEA & FRIENDS 3
7.30pm, Crail Church
£30/20*, 110 min inc. interval
GARTH KNOX Quartet for 1
DEBUSSY Quartet in Gm, Op. 1
CHAUSSON Concerto for Violin, Piano and Quartet, Op. 21
Diyang Mei viola
Vilde Frang violin
Bertrand Chamayou piano
Belcea Quartet
We love the idea of Garth Knox’s quartet in which the viola plays all the parts – a tour de force that’s as serious as it is comic. Then the Belcea Quartet end this year’s residency playing alone in Debussy and then in ensemble for Chausson’s ravishing Concerto. There is nothing else like it in the catalogue, and with this world class line-up we expect a truly memorable evening.
SUNDAY 2 JULY
LATIN JOURNEYS
12pm, St Monans Church. £20/15*, 80 min
Guitarist Morgan Szymanski is joined by award-winning young accordionist Sofia Ros for a musical tour around Spain and South America: Scarlatti, Albeniz, Granados, Espinosa and more in the hands of these two superlative musicians.
CLOSING CONCERT
5pm, Holy Trinity St Andrews
£30/18*, 120 min inc. interval
PÄRT Cantus in Memoriam Benjamin Britten
BACH Fantasia & Fugue for Organ, BWV 542
BRITTEN Variations on a Theme of Frank Bridge, Op. 10
GLASS Mad Rush for Organ
GLASS American Seasons
Scottish Chamber Orchestra
Isabelle van Keulen violin/director
Tom Wilkinson organ
Unleashing the full magnificent power and colour of Holy Trinity’s organ, Tom Wilkinson joins the SCO and violinist Isabelle van Keulen for a spectacular closing concert. Opening in near silence with Arvo Pärt, the concert closes with the exhilarating thrill of Philip Glass’s response to Vivaldi’s 4 Seasons – his ‘American Seasons’ is a gem.
We hope to announce our jazz, contemporary and traditional music events in March 2023.
