Dear Residents:

A Message from Our Executive Director

A quote that sits next to my laptop is a reminder to me about inner strength during this pandemic. “The same boiling water that softens the potato hardens the egg. It’s about what you’re made of, not the circumstances.” (author unknown). This pandemic tests our inner strength on a daily basis as we face challenges and changes that will lead us to a new and enhanced normal. I’d like to thank you for continuing to choose the Batavia Park District as your recreation provider. We pride ourselves in being an essential service in our community, and will continue to serve your recreational needs indefinitely. In an effort to stay in touch with our residents’ changing needs, the Park District will be conducting a community-wide needs assessment this year. The Board and Staff remain open minded to reprioritizing our goals and master plan based on the results from this assessment. These results will be shared with the public at the end of the project. On the east side of town, Washington Park will be receiving a facelift. Residents voted for their choice of playground equipment and selected a style that features multiple climbing, rocking and sliding structures. There also will be a multigenerational playground swing that will provide countless hours of fun in which an adult and child interact face to face and eye to eye. Research tells us when a parent and a child’s eyes meet, particularly during play, there is an intense and significant bonding that occurs. Doctors call this “attunement,” and it enhances the social, emotional and cognitive well-being of both children and adults. For those of you pickleball and tennis lovers, the courts at South Mill Creek and Prairie and Lathem parks will be resurfaced this summer. We also are going to be adding pickleball lines to these courts, which have been in high demand by the community. While there isn’t a playbook for this pandemic, we know our community stays strong when we stay connected! We invite you to stay active and connected with us by visiting the Batavia Virtual Recreation Center at bataviaparks.org. We hope you take the time to peruse this guide and take time for fun! All the best,

Allison Niemela, CPRP Executive Director

MISSION STATEMENT Committed to providing fun, safe, and innovative open space and recreational opportunities that will enrich the quality of life for our residents.

The Park Board Your Park Board is composed of five, nonpaid commissioners selected by you to serve varying terms. The Board is primarily a policy-making body that reflects the needs and interests of all taxpayers. The Park Board meets the 3rd Tuesday of each month at the Civic Center, 327 W. Wilson St., at 7:00 pm. Please feel welcome to attend. • April 19 • May 17

Parent involvement in the classroom is encouraged! Program Takeaways: • Language, listening, and speaking activities • Art and sensory activities • Social skills with conflict resolution • Science and math skills • Problem-solving techniques Young 3’s Program: • For a first away-from-parent experience • Emphasis on socialization skills • Pull-ups are allowed in this class only. Hall Quarry Beach 22 | Spring 2022

The Story of Hall Quarry Beach Hall Quarry Beach is an award-winning facility of the Batavia Park District!

Hall Quarry Beach occupies a former stone quarry now owned by the Batavia Park District. It has been used as a swimming facility since 1920. The story began over 150 years ago in 1842, when a limestone quarry was opened on the west end of town and Batavia received the name “Rock City.” By 1860, nine quarries were in operation, and one of these quarries sat on an acre of property along the Fox River. More than 150 men mined limestone from the quarry until it was so deep and wide that water began permeating up through the floor of the site. Soon enough, six ponds were formed that fondly were known as “old swimming holes.” By 1920, the Quarry was purchased by Frederick Beach. Beach donated the Quarry to Batavia Township, and they converted the six ponds into one swimming area. This area was named the Frederick H. Beach Park and Pool. Fast forward to 1969, when the Batavia Park District formed and the property was then transferred to the Park District and later renamed. Today Hall Quarry Beach features a sand-bottom swimming area covering 60,000 square feet, which includes islands, slides, and a diving area. There is a playground and plenty of picnic tables, as well. Come visit the beach that Batavia built!.

Non-Resident Fee Policy The Batavia Park District residents make a significant contribution to the operation of the park district via property taxes. The boundaries were established with the formation of the park district in 1969. A copy of a map showing the park district boundaries is printed in the brochure and available at the park district office. Persons living outside the park district boundaries may be required to pay an additional fee to register for programs.

Electronic Signature Readers: Electronic signature readers have been installed, which will eliminate the need for you to complete a paper form every time you register. The electronic reader will capture your signature and confirm that you’ve agreed to the liability waiver and release of all claims. Signatures will stay on file for 12 months, and after that time you will simply stop in to sign the waiver again. If you are a regular phone-in customer, we will need to capture your signature in person in order for you to do subsequent registrations by phone. Online registration will not be affected by this new procedure.

It is always advisable, especially if the participant is pregnant, disabled in any way or recently suffered an illness, injury or impairment, to consult a physician before undertaking any physical activity.

Warning of Risk Recreational activities are intended to challenge and engage the physical, mental and emotional resources of each participant. It is impossible for the Park District to guarantee absolute safety.

I further agree to waive and relinquish all claims I or my minor child/ward may have (accrue to me or my child/ward) as a result of participating in this program/activity against the Park District, including its official, agents, volunteers and employees (hereinafter collectively referred as “Parties”). I do hereby fully release and forever discharge the parties from any and all claims for injuries, damages, or loss that my minor child/ward or I may have or which may accrue to me to my minor child/ ward in any way associated with the programs(s)/ activity(ies). I acknowledge I (or my minor child/ward) will abide by local, state and federal guidelines regarding COVID-19, as well as facility/program policies, rules, safety directives, etc. I acknowledge if I (or my minor child/ ward) fail to abide by these, my access to Batavia Park District facilities and programs may be revoked at any time and at the Batavia Park District’s sole discretion. I acknowledge and agree federal, state and local guidelines regarding COVID-19 are subject to change and the Batavia Park District may, at its sole discretion, revoke the effectiveness of this document to manage facility capacity, participation in programming and/or use of facilities as well as safety.
