‘F’ Rating

The 7th annual Festival is the biggest to date, with well over 100 performers!

Bath Comedy Festival has become the first ‘F’ Rated UK Comedy Festival.

Our Comedy Festival team directly chooses, promotes and produces a core series of shows, (denoted by the plug logo), centred on specific venues including Bath Cricket Club and the Ring O Bells, plus such fabulous one-offs as the 8th Wine Arts Trail and Sunday Lunch with Lady Margaret at Woods. We also operate an ‘open door’ programme policy, inviting everyone who is bold or crazy or downright funny enough to put on comedy to run their own events as part of this Festival feast of over 110 shows in 11 days. The ‘open door’ programme features comedy in all manner of venues including a run of “FIDO” (free in donation out) shows at Bath Brew House, events at the Rondo and Mission Theatres, Komedia, The Bell, St James Wine Vaults as well as outdoor events and comedy walks. There is a lot to shout about this year, not least our ‘F’ Rating and the inaugural daytime Kids’ Comedy Fest. More good news is that average ticket prices are down and there are more concessions available for students. I am delighted to welcome Festival Patron and Python Terry Jones this year for a special event and the inaugural Bath Plug Award at the Little Theatre. Read on and enjoy this year’s fabulous programme of events, and discover new comedians and venues in the process. For more information, online booking, and to join the e-mailing list visit www.bathcomedy.com

Nick Steel, Festival Director

This year’s core programme includes at least one female act every day throughout the festival, and in every multiple line-up, at least two female contestants in each heat of the New Act Competition, plus female compères and judges. Our ‘F’ also stands for ‘Funny’. There are many very funny women out there, and by applying this rating to our core programme, we aim to show that once and for all!

Kiids’ comedy fest We’ve joined forces with Jimmy Mc from Bath’s popular Saturday morning club for children - Fezziwigs Fun Club - to produce a packed programme of weekday lunchtime Easter holiday fun guaranteed to keep the kids rolling in the aisles, with some mums and dads more than likely to be joining them. This symbol denotes a core Festival event - Friends of the Festival are entitled to concessions (where available). Email friend@bathcomedy.com for information.

This show will examine them, and Sam will also be using experiences he’s had to empathise with other people doing other jobs. Where are the laughs in the world of work? There are loads - there are blaggers, people who are shit at their jobs, how people pass the time when they’re at work and loads more. So clock in, roll up your sleeves and lets put a shift in.

Joe Rooney Your Man Joe Rooney

8pm for 8:30pm show | St James Wine Vaults | TICKETS: £5 | 0800 411 8881 Joe Rooney is your definitive Irish comedian, with a brutally honest yet brilliantly obscure view of life, covering hot issues of the day such as handless raspberry pickers, triumphantly still wearing his under-12’s Gaelic football shorts and country hotels run by families of red headed inbred midgets. Rooney’s energetic eccentricity includes a brief musical history of Ireland and her music; “fiddley diddley” will never ring the same meaning again. “With his slicked back hair and gifts as a musical comic you can see why he was cast as the cool, disaffected Damo (Father Ted). Yet Rooney’s pastiches of The Dubliners songbook reveal a mischievous insight beyond the rebel-without-abrain-cell of his on-screen counterpart.” - Chortle

Probably. But not to Paul. What if the baby was like him, a chronic insomniac with a tendency to say the wrong thing and p*ss people off? What are you supposed to do with a baby anyway? Can the family survive and thrive or will it be T-Eyres before bedtime?!? Paul appears on BBC3, has written for BBC and Channel 4, and has a weekly podcast in which he and other comedians cover everything from sport to self-improvement to consider the failure of their own lives.

Monday 6th April Arthur Smith* Sings Leonard Cohen Volume 2 - The Extended Mix * and The Smithereens!

8pm for 8:30pm show (1hr 40min) | Bath Cricket Club | Tickets: £15/£12 concs | 0800 411 8881 A huge hit at the Edinburgh Fringe and venues around Britain and Ireland, it returns – lengthened, deepened, with extra laughs and the addition of 4 more Cohen songs (including ‘the most miserable song ever written’). The show reflects on despair, decline and dementia yet succeeds in being hilarious, joyous and life-affirming. Smith, playwright, grumpy old man, ‘Radio 4’s bit of rough’ and stand-up comic, is enhanced by the fabulous Smithereens, a trio of unbeatably melodious and glamorous singer/musicians to produce an evening you will never forget. “This bittersweet blend of stand-up and song made me laugh (a lot) and cry (a bit)… a triumph.” **** Times Sponsored by

“The Smithereens, Smith’s sensational troupe of backing singers, [are] … Ethereal, playful and beguiling.” **** Fest “A delight of a show. Supremely crafted comedy” **** List “Thoroughly entertaining.” **** Three Weeks

Daniel Dagger

9pm for 9:30pm show (1hr) | Bath Brew House | TICKETS: Free (donations) or £5 to reserve - call 07599 712393 Daniel Dagger was once described as ‘unbookable’. The man who said so (his agent) did in fact live to tell the tale; but that’s another story... He’ll make you laugh, he’ll make you cry, he’ll make you wish you could afford psychotherapy - for him if not for yourself. Dagger’s comedy is a bladed weapon: pointed and sharp edged, as dangerous as it is compelling. Taking a whirlwind journey thorough the savage side of the human psyche, he says all the things you didn’t want to admit you were already thinking. You’ll laugh - whether you wanted to or not! WARNING: This show contains strong language, mentions of violence and adult themes. Do not attend if easily offended.
