Third Year Robert Mitchell The most important message in the third year is that ideas generate architecture and that it is the result of an enquiry, rather than a formal aim to ‘look’ like something stylistically. Imagination and inventiveness are cultivated, and the projects undertaken are represented through models and drawings that tackle a range of scales and experiences. We endeavour to go beyond what is immediately apparent, trusting our imagination and curiosity. The work should be a journey of investigation largely driven by drawing and modelling through a continuous process. The first proposal or idea will not be the last. The first thing is to decide what a project will be ‘about’ and ‘Studio in the City’ offers the opportunity to explore and develop one idea to a high degree of resolution. This project introduces a number of varying conditions such as historic context and cultural, social and environmental conditions. Through this the students further develop their understanding of Place and ground their narrative. The Queen Square pavilion project, undertaken in collaboration with the engineering students, was an opportunity to further develop these ideas. The shortlisted group schemes are to be exhibited in the Architecture Centre in Bristol, with the most successful scheme constructed in Queen Square when funding becomes available. The study trip to Istanbul launched the main individual project for a Health Centre and Hamam and included a city mapping exercise designed as a means of understanding a place before working on an intervention. Students are expected to develop their own intellectual and architectural brief for this project over and above the presented brief. They should always know what their architecture ‘does’ and how it does it.

“Queen Square-a conflicted place

History reveals reoccurring fractures in both the physical and social developments which relate to this urban site. The idea the power of a man over men is a reoccurring theme in the context of Queens Square, initially with its association with the slave trade and most prominently in the riots of 1831 which were fuelled b

Changing their habitual passage through this transitional space will momentarily disorientate them as cause them reassess the Square. The overbearing nature and confrontation position of this pavilion will not only encourage people to remember the uncomfortable, well concealed history; but it should also cause them to on thoughts or emotions that might have otherwise been suppressed.
