Extending to 17 days, across some of the city’s most beautiful venues and outside spaces, we bring more than 180 live events to the heart of Bath and the surrounding community. The opening night kicks off with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment and Choir of Clare College, Cambridge at the Wiltshire Music Centre. At the Forum, Amanda Palmer performs her unique brand of punk cabaret. Inspirational speakers and writers include Chris Bonington, Andrew Adonis, Maggie O’ Farrell, Margaret Drabble, David Olusoga, Rose Tremain, Kate Mosse and Robert Webb. Musical highlights range from Ben Folds, Kathryn Tickell, Ladysmith Black Mambazo and Mary Chapin Carpenter to Stephen Hough, Roderick Williams and the Royal Northern Sinfonia. We bring you emerging stars with 2016 BBC Young Musician of the year Sheku Kanneh-Mason and 2017 BBC Cardiff Singer of the World, Catriona Morrison. Throughout the festival, the city will be alive with performance. Spira Mirabilis, an electrifying ensemble from Italy, give an unforgettable alfresco performance of Beethoven 7. Party in the City is Bath’s biggest night of free music and takes place on Friday 18 May. We launch SparkFest in partnership with Bath Spa University – an innovative programme of theatre, music and dance, curated and created by the stars of tomorrow.

We go to Twerton Park, the home of Bath City FC, for a day of football fun for all the family; team with FilmBath to celebrate the centenary of women’s suffrage with ﬁlm, literature, politics, music and comedy; and take over the Masonic Hall for a night of Living Literature that will immerse you in the world of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein in a dazzling multisensory evening. We close with a party on the Rec, headlined by Bath legends Tears for Fears, plus big names like Robert Plant, Imelda May, Alison Moyet, Sophie Ellis-Bextor, Midge Ure and Seth Lakeman . At the heart of our festival are amazing partnerships. We would like to thank Bath Spa University, Visit Bath, Bath BID, Wiltshire Music Centre and the teachers, project leaders and children who work with us. The importance of our growing number of patrons, members and volunteers is also huge and so valued.

Party in the City kicks off our outdoor weekend on Friday 18 May - the biggest night of free music of the year! Performers appear across 35+ venues, as well as on the city streets and our outdoor stages. Festival [Queen] Square and Parade Gardens will be ﬁlled with great live music, local food and drink, and you'll be able to hit one of our festival venues or bars and enjoy the music until the early hours in style.

The night will open with our annual Schools Commission in the Abbey. This year, the magic of the festival has transformed local school children into Festival Spirits. See the children mischievously disrupt and take over a traditional song recital. They will join soprano Elizabeth Karani to become characters from past and future festivals, inspired by material from the festival archives. Working with composer Richard Barnard and artist Edwina Bridgeman, the children will create a brand-new performance and installation piece celebrating 70 years of the festival. On Saturday and Sunday 20th May, our outdoor stage in Brunel Square will feature music and performances for the whole family, including a preview performance of Leonard Bernstein’s musical West Side Story (pg 38). On Saturday, we take inspiration from the Royal Wedding and bring together our community for our very own street party.

On Sunday 13 May, look out for Italian ensemble Spira Mirabilis playing in Old Bond Street and Brunel Square. “Spira mirabilis represent a transformative vision of what a symphony orchestra can beÁThey are a revelationÁ”

Singer, composer, Scottish harp player and broadcaster Mary Ann Kennedy is joined on stage by BBC Radio 2 Folk Award Musician of the Year, Rachel Newton. Both women share a love of the harp and have been fascinated by each other’s work for years. Together, they will explore new connections within the folk tradition.

Soumik Datta is a British Indian composer and virtuoso player of the sarod – a 19 stringed fretless instrument from ancient Afghanistan and colonial India. He has collaborated with Beyonce, Jay Z, Bill Bailey, Nitin Sawhney, Anoushka Shankar and Talvin Singh, and has brought the ancient sarod into a global arena. In this New Meeting, he will be joined by Ayoze de Alejandro Lopez, a master percussionist from Gran Canaria. Together, they will explore how the sarod can work with Spanish and Latin percussion - in particular the sonorous cajon ‘box’, used widely in ﬂamenco.

EMPOWERING AND INSPIRING YOUNG PEOPLE THROUGH THE ARTS

The festival is the highlight of the year for the Creative Learning team. It’s a time to celebrate our achievements and to showcase young people’s creativity. We will hear young people’s voices in our school commission Festival Spirits (see page 27) and all over the city with stories and poems created as part of the Paper Nations programme. Our Family Arts Day in Parade Gardens (see page 37) is also back with lots of creative activities to try out - don’t miss it!

PAPER NATIONS

We have selected some of the fantastic artists and authors performing at the festival to make special appearances at local schools. From a musical assembly with a string quartet to a talk from a national journalist, we have plenty on offer to inspire your pupils. Get in touch to ﬁnd out more.

This ambitious 3-year project aims to support and nurture young people who aspire to be creative writers. We have held events and discussions at our festivals with engaging panellists and lively audiences. We have also delivered activities in schools, community groups and at Bristol Children’s Hospital to inspire young people to ﬁnd their voices and pick up a pen. To celebrate, we are taking our young writers’ words to the street! Look out for stories on pavements, shop windows and bus shelters and ﬁnd out how you can get writing too!

YOUNG PRODUCERS We have embarked on a 3-year programme in partnership with Mentoring Plus, which will give young people across Bath the skills and conﬁdence to stage their own community events. The Young Producers will be working with the Bath Festivals team and our Artistic Directors to ﬁnd out what happens behind the scenes.
