WELCOME

Welcome to our Festival! Come along and help us to celebrate and explore a vibrant literature that sits right at the heart of our culture. Forget the pessimists. Children read widely, are fascinated by stories and language, and they are encouraged, supported and inspired by parents, teachers, librarians – and by festivals like ours! Children read books in all kinds of forms: short books, long books, books with amazing blends of image and text, books with no words at all, books that flash, books that squeak, books that explore the depths of emotion, that deal with major social issues, books that are hilarious, books that are troubling, books that are daft. Children know that stories are living things, that words on the page can blend with pictures, can leap out into drama, song and dance. Children’s writers and illustrators are experimental, risk-taking, and are dedicated to their art and craft. They genuinely want to reach out to their audience, and to work with their readers to keep the culture alive.

We’re bringing some of the leading writers and illustrators to Bath. We’re proud that there will be a strong contingent of foreign authors this year. We’re also proud of our hugely effective educational and outreach programme, and of the series of masterclasses that will be taking place this year to help children and adults to develop their own writing/artistic skills. Come to the Festival. Meet people who really do believe that books, reading, writing, and all forms of art can change people’s lives. We invite you all – children, especially, of course, and their families. But we want everyone to come, no matter what their age. The public at large, and the media, and politicians all need to know about this vibrant world, to understand and value it, to be energised by it. Come along, look, listen, learn, take part, and have fun.
