INVESTING IN THE ARTS

Making Bath & North East Somerset an even better place to live, work and visit

About Walcot Chapel Walcot Chapel is a former mortuary chapel, sometimes referred to as Walcot Village Hall. Set in Walcot Gate, just off Walcot Street in a former church burial ground, it is a very popular venue for art exhibitions. It is an attractive, light-filled space with a pair of original Victorian fireplaces. Prospective hirers should note the following: 

Walcot Chapel is a ‘dry hire’, that is, there is no servicing or support of any kind to the venue. There is electricity and basic lighting and the cost of this is included in your hire fee.

There is no toilet, sink or running water. You will need to bring containers of drinking water and your own kettle. Although there is no formal arrangement in place, The Bell Public House and St. Swithin’s Church Café in nearby Walcot Street are usually happy to help tenants of the Walcot Chapel with access to toilet facilities and for filling up water containers.

There is no furniture on the premises. Therefore, you will need to bring your own table and chair(s) and anything else you require.

There is no heating and the building can be very cold in winter.

There is no landline telephone.

How much does it cost to hire Walcot Chapel? Walcot Chapel is managed by B&NES Council Property Services Team and can be hired for one week or multiples of weeks. The current rent is £160 per week. This is required within two weeks from enquiry, to secure the booking and is non-refundable. Payment is required by cheque, made payable to Bath & North East Somerset Council.

Who do I contact if I want to hire Walcot Chapel? Contact Alison Wright or Hayley Clark on 01225 477172, or email PALS_AdminHelpdesk@bathnes.gov.uk

Alison or Hayley will be able to tell you when the Chapel is available for hire and how and where to collect the keys.

Conditions of hire 

All tenants must have public liability insurance cover for no less than £5 million. This policy meets the demands and needs of artists requiring insurance against their legal liabilities to pay compensation arising out of injury to third parties and damage to third party property. Please contact Alison Wright on 01225 477172 for additional information about public liability insurance.

Once you have the keys, you have full responsibility for ensuring the security of the building and your property during your tenancy, including locking the building overnight.

You must keep the building staffed/guarded at all times while it is open to the public.

You can install temporary partitioning and additional lighting, providing you remove everything at the end of your hire and return the space to the condition in which you found it. This includes removing any wall plugs and reinstating the walls.
