the editor’s note

Dear Readers We’ve once again come to the end of a spectacular year. 2018 has seen our magazine go through a crisp face lift, eskewing our ever-changing fonts to a uniform presentation. The new look is fearlessly bold and, in my opinion, the perfect coffee table read. What do you think of it? Let us know! The kitchen sink plays an important role inside the kitchen. As it is a fixture that homeowners use every day, it is crucial to decide the right color for your kitchen sink. Why not play it bold with an unapologetic black tone? Hop over to our cover story to read on. Have something bathroom related to share? Send it in! We welcome submissions and would be happy to feature pieces from loyal readers. Till then, happy reading!

rom Denmark to Dubai and Sweden to South Korea, the Fair promises to be a melting pot of design from a wide range of cultures. Twelve country pavilions and one very special guest country—Japan—will exhibit an impressive array of products, alongside a smart international line-up of independent designers and brands. Moreover, London Design Fair welcomes the return of Envisions with ‘Wood in Progress’ and the Material of the Year: Plastic. These two feature exhibitions aim to provoke audiences, sparking conversation and encouraging new ways of thinking about design at the present time. The following country pavilions, features and brands are a selection of the international flavour and design expertise visitors can expect to find at London Design Fair 2018. Denmark: Danish Living Room Denmark’s zest for furniture will come to life in a real-world Danish living room. A specially curated mix of new and heritage Danish brands will highlight the nation’s design prowess and commitment to excellence in craftsmanship. Iconic and contemporary designs will sit side by side, showcasing Denmark’s contribution to design in a range of disciplines: furniture, flooring, lighting, homeware and sound. The Danish Living Room is cofinanced by The Trade Council of Denmark, facilitated by the Embassy of Denmark in London and sponsored by Junckers (a Danish manufacturer of solid wood flooring). Exhibiting brands include: Arttiles, BoConcept, Dottir, Eberhart, Fritz Hansen, Georg Jensen, Junckers, LOP Furniture, Made by Toft, Mobel & Rum, Morso, Noorstad, Overgaard & Dyrman, Skovby, Spekva and Tom Rossau. South Korea: Seoul Design Festival Since 2002, Seoul Design Festival has supported up-and-coming Korean designers and design brands; the quintessential design event in Korea, the festival promotes more than 200 designers

and brands every year. With its motto ‘Designer Promotion’, Seoul Design Festival aims to enhance the competitiveness of both Korean designers and the Korean design sector. Graduating from Hongik University, Seoul, in 2009, Jiyoun Kim worked with the North American branch of Pantech Mobile Device Design for five years—during this time he established Jiyoun Kim Studio. Today, Kim works across multiple disciplines, including product design, branding, living products and art. The Dokkaebi Stool (pictured) was created by Kim as part of a larger art installation in the Hangang Art Park, by the Han River in Seoul. Founded by Seoulbased designers Byounghwi Jeon and Seungjoon Song, Studio PESI seeks to find new possibilities in design, by reinterpreting objects without losing their essential elements. PESI is an acronym for ‘Possibility, Essential, Standpoint, Interpretation’: the studio approaches design in a manner that is experiential, lively and cheerful. Czech Republic: UMPRUM UMPRUM—the Academy of Arts, Architecture & Design in Prague—was established in 1885. Since that time, this prestigious institution has flourished: ranked among the best educational establishments in the Czech Republic, it has many successful graduates and is the only Eastern European school to figure in the indices of prestigious European and world art schools. The Studio of Glass at UMPRUM will present ‘Colours of Transparency’, showcasing the latest body of imaginative works by students. Pellucidity and hue, as related to glass, form the central theme of the exhibition. The Studio of Glass experiments with the boundaries between applied and fine arts, crafting glass and then artistically disrupting it—students work with paint, disrupting classic design concepts and are not afraid to experiment. Czech Republic: UMPRUM Above: Dominika Petrtýlová, Vandal Vases, UMPRUM Colours of Transparency exhibition space will reflect the ubiquitous ambiguity of glass. Spray paint will obscure the

view while simultaneously accentuating and highlighting the space, so challenging the distinction between vandalism and art. Netherlands: Dutch Stuff Dutch Stuff returns to the London Design Fair following its debut in 2017. With a focus on quality, this year’s showcase will prioritise space to interact with and think about those designers, products and ideas driving contemporary Dutch design. REM Atelier, a collaborative art and design project set up in 2015 by artist Remty Elenga and designer Remco van Halderen, investigates artistic objects and installations from the viewpoint of functionality and decor. Rather than merely decorate a space, the unique and limited edition objects by REM Atelier create an alternative space, subjecting the surroundings to the artwork. To create the Botanic light piece, REM Atelier worked with sculptured photography—flat images placed between plexiglass create an illusion of depth. Studio Laurids Gallee has experimented with traditional marquetry and inlay techniques. Together with computer programming and modern machinery, the studio created a technique that reintroduces the decorative art of marquetry (an art that has suffered at the hands of mass production). Material of the Year: Plastic Beyond the Chipper During 2018, plastic has grown exponentially to become a pariah in the minds of many designers and consumers alike. As governments strive to tackle and ban ‘single-use’ plastic, and increasing amounts of microplastic are found in fish, we are left with an obvious problem: what to do with the difficulties posed by plastic? London Design Fair chose plastic as the 2018 Material of the Year, in a bid to showcase and celebrate just some of the designers who are engaging head-on with the significant environmental issues posed by plastic. Material designer Charlotte Kidger recently graduated from Central Saint Martins with an MA in Material Futures. Working with polyurethane foam dust, a by-product of CNC fabrication, she has created a versatile and durable composite material. The composite is processed by means of cold casting to create 3D objects. Kidger will show her collection of large-scale tables and vessels at the Fair. Dirk Vander Kooij graduated in 2009 from Design Academy Eindhoven. A craftsman and inventor, he is best known for his playful extrusions of reclaimed synthetics. Using an in-house-designed robot and materials recycled from a range of polycarbonate products, Vander Kooij applies lowresolution 3D printing in furniture production. Vander Kooij will exhibit the ‘buitenhuis’ chandelier at the Fair, shown in the UK for the first time. Envisions x Finsa Envisions is a collective of twenty four multidisciplinary designers, who share a fascination for experimental design. At Envisions, the focus is on the creative, research process and not the end product. With this approach, Envisions makes use of material experiments and works with companies to offer new insights on their existing production processes, products and techniques. Envisions was founded by Sanne Schuurman, Simone Post and Iwan Pol, after the trio graduated from Design Academy Eindhoven in 2015. The Envisions collective came about because the founders realised their product-rich, post-

academy world lacked the open arena, conversation and ideas on ‘working towards a result’ they had enjoyed at the Design Academy. By acknowledging and showcasing the design process itself, Envisions created the basis for interaction and exchange, challenging the design industry to an open dialogue. Envisions approached Finsa, a wood manufacturer headquartered in Santiago de Compostela, Spain, and twelve designers were invited to infiltrate Finsa’s production grounds and free Above: Envisions their individualised creativity. The result—Wood in Progress—shows twelve distinctive processes that highlight the ‘pioneering potential of the unhindered imaginations of industry outsiders.’ Brands From Toronto, Canada, Hi Thanks Bye is the collaborative effort of Stein Wang and Topher Kong. Using a mix of cultural and academic experiences and references, the two designers exchange ideas on the meaning of furniture and interior space in modern contemporary living. The debut collection from Hi Thanks Bye—collection 0—is a sculptural interpretation of the Canadian landscape combined with a Chinese aesthetic. The entire collection is made using powder-coated stainless steel (with the exception of upholstery pieces). Functional and versatile, designs include the U0 shelf, V0 side table and R0 dining chair. About London Design Fair Located in Shoreditch, the creative heart of London, the London Design Fair is a four-day industry event that brings together 550 exhibitors from 36 countries, including: independent designers, established brands, international country pavilions, features and exhibitions. Launched in 2007, the London Design Fair has earned itself the reputation as the go-to trade show during the annual London Design Festival, hosting the single largest collection of international exhibitions, designers, brands, country pavilions, features and galleries throughout the festival. SINGAPORE DEBUT OF COSENTINO’S ALL-NEW DEK TON® INDUSTRIAL COLLEC TION AND THREE NE W S H A D E S I N T H E N AT U R A L A N D X G LO S S C O L L E C T I O N S

ekton®, the innovative, ultracompact surface created by Cosentino for the world of architecture and design, is delighted to introduce their allnew Industrial collection and their three newest colours in the XGloss and Natural Collections. In total, six new beautiful colours of Dekton®’s one-of-a-kind surfaces that are renowned for being both visually stunning and possessing unparalleled technical specifications, will be making their debut in Singapore. The Dekton® Industrial Collection was developed in collaboration with renowned architect and designer Daniel Germani. Three brand new shades from the Industrial Collection will be making their debut in Singapore: “Nilium”, “Radium”, and “Orix”. “Nilium”, and “Radium” are based on the look of aged, rusted metals with irregular, organic patterns, giving a hybrid appearance taken from weather-worn and exotic natural stone, while “Orix” represents the degradation of cement and the biological transformation of stone. Daniel Germani, designer of the Dekton® Industrial collection says: “The Dekton® Industrial colour collection was created so as to contemplate the beauty of metals and cement at every stage of their life; it pays homage to the beautiful imperfections of the oxidation and degradation processes undergone by certain materials. The incomparable technology of Dekton® gave us the tools necessary to explore and design, and the result is a collection of colours that highlight the richness and depth of natural, organic processes.” Cosentino will also be unveiling the three newest colours that will be joining the Natural and XGloss Collections: “Opera”, “Natura” and “Fossil”. These colours are inspired by the beautiful veining of natural marble and stone. From the Natural collection is “Opera”, a beautiful creamy white marble with light grey veining, finished in a new soft touch finish from Dekton®, Velvet Texture; and “Fossil”, a dark veined stone texturised with fossilised imprints. “Natura” is a new shade from the XGloss collection, and is available in a lustrous glossy veined marble finish. Please see Annex B for more information on the three new colours in the Natural and XGloss collections.

As part of Cosentino’s commitment to sustainability, Cosentino allocates a portion of its R&D to the development of products and processes that minimise impact on the environment. “Trilium” and “Radium”, two of the colours in the Dekton® Industrial colour collection, are a clear example of this as they are manufactured using up to 80% recycled materials. Cosentino also implements a catalogue of environmentally respectful measures in its manufacturing processes; such as systems that maintain clean air in the factories, methods that support energy efficiency, sustainable systems that assist the management and use of water, and the valuation of waste to achieve a “zero emissions” objective. On 25 May, these six new beautiful colours of Dekton®’s one-of-a-kind surfaces made their debut in Singapore at a launch party attended by about 250 guests comprising members of the media and industry guests. Guests were treated to rousing tap dance and percussion performances by two award-winning world class acts, Tap Dogs and Stomp; as well as live-food stations that serving delectable food items that included Spanish paella, suckling pig, pizza, hotdogs and Yolé frozen yoghurt. Proudly on display within Cosentino’s latest facility located at 22 Gul Avenue were the three slabs from the Dekton® Industrial Collection, “Orix”, “Nilium” and “Radium”. Adding on to the festivities outdoors were slabs of “Opera” and “Fossil” from the Natural collection as well as “Natura” from the XGloss collection on display for guests to admire and feel for themselves. The evening’s programme included a further two slabs of “Aura” from the Natural collection – one of which was specially put in place for students from Raffles College of Higher Education to decorate with funky graffiti; and the other as an interactive exhibit for guests to write a message or leave an autograph in order to mark the celebration, before it was wiped clean to showcase the antiporous and waterproof characteristics of Dekton® surfaces at the end of the night. All six new shades will be available in Singapore from 25 May onwards. For more information, visit www.dekton.com.sg/new-colours.

esigned by the WETSTYLE Design Lab, the pieces are exhibitive of the supreme craftsmanship and stylistic simplicity for which the brand is known. Inherently elegant, each tub was thoughtfully-designed with functionality at the forefront, while offering a contemporary, timeless aesthetic. “Aiming for a modern look that will never go out of style, we developed this series of bathtubs to answer the demands of the consumer’s varying needs,” says Mark Wolinsky, President of WETSTYLE. “Whether working with a small or large space, old or new home, these tubs will integrate seamlessly. With the addition of Cloud, Straight, and Wave, we hope to inspire consumers to pursue innovative tub shapes and realize that bespoke luxury is not out of their reach.” Cloud: The 62-inch Cloud bath lives somewhere between the past and present; its flared shape evokes a vintage feel, while its flowing lines and solidity are rooted in the contemporary, making it the perfect match for transitional tastes. A gently curved base gives this bathtub a distinctive style; while a simple rounded base can be substituted for a more traditional look. Straight: A slightly smaller option at 59 inches long, Straight’s dimensions are ideal for more compact footprints and its rectangular, contemporary look, softened by its curves, lends an elegant feel to today’s bathroom. The bathtub’s subtly inset base adds an extra touch of refinement. The Straight bath evokes simplicity, softness, and purity, thanks to its sleek lines and rounded edges. Together, these elements create a sensation of lightness, as if Straight was born to become one with its surroundings.

ansgrohe SE is one of the innovation leaders honored this year. This success is the result of an evaluation process overseen by Professor Doctor Nikolaus Franke, the scientific lead of TOP 100. As a mentor of TOP 100, Ranga Yogeshwar will present the award to the Schiltach-based company together with Franke and compamedia on June 29, 2018 at the awards ceremony in Ludwigsburg, which will take place as part of the 5th German SME Summit. In the independent selection process, Hansgrohe SE, which employs some 2,900 people in Germany, performed particularly well in the "Successful Innovations" category. "Our innovative spirit is rooted in our DNA" – this is how Thorsten Klapproth, Chairman of the Executive Board of Hansgrohe SE, characterizes the top innovator from the Black Forest. In fact, the 117-year history of the company is studded with numerous inventions such as the first hand shower with adjustable spray modes, the first pull-out kitchen tap and the first shower bar. With more than 16,000 active patents, today, the TOP 100 Company is still one of the world's most innovative suppliers in the sanitation industry. "There is an almost endless number of possibilities when it comes to shaping the flow of water. Extremely fine silicone nozzles are the most important factor, or more precisely: the number of nozzles, how they are positioned, their size and the way they are engineered. In other words, the innovation is in every single nozzle; each must be precisely positioned on the spray disc," Klapproth explains. The latest innovation in this field is the "PowderRain" spray technology which produces microfine water jets. Hansgrohe also works at optimizing the noise behaviour of its products. The medium-sized company has its own acoustics laboratory, equipped with airborne sound test benches and an airborne noise test chamber. All this work pays off: products

hen Dornbracht introduced the new finishes for the Vaia series of fittings, it marked a resumption of the successful collaboration with architects and interior designers. To act as context for the Vaia fitting, Dornbracht called for mood boards, sketches, material collages and bathroom architectures to be designed in keeping with the motto "Create a new balance – between traditional elegance and contemporary cool". Dornbracht previously worked together with Neri&Hu and Raphael de Cárdenas in 2017. Irina Kromayer, Etienne Descloux and Lex de Gooijer followed in 2018. Dornbracht allocated each of the architects and interior designers one of the Vaia series finishes as their basis for rethinking the transitional style theme. The results act as a source of inspiration for architects, interior designers and private developers. At the same time, they expose the creative freedom and diversity of design that is unlocked by the new Vaia colour collection. For more information, visit www.dornbracht.com.

fluorescent bulb is normally lit with a wired connection at each of its pins, sending power through the filaments at either end and causing collisions between electrons inside the tube, which then give off light as they pass through the bulb’s phosphorous coating. When a bulb is burnt-out, it will be blackened on its ends, indicating that the fuses are blown and that it will no longer work in a standard fluorescent lighting setup. Despite the fact that the bulb seems useless as is, it can still be lit through electromagnetic induction. Electromagnetic induction is the production of voltage due to a change in the magnetic field. Inside the Induction Wall Light’s box is a circuit and a coil of copper wire wrapped around an iron core. Stomping on the Induction Wall Light’s foot switch activates a circuit inside the switch base, transferring power around the iron core, which then sends electrical current through the wire to the bulb resting in the lamp holder. The active current stimulates the gases inside the fluorescent bulb, which in turn causes the bulb to emit light. Recalling that a fluorescent bulb is normally lit through a wired connection at its pins, the Induction Wall Light leaves the bulb’s pin exposed to further demonstrate that it uses a magnetic field to transfer electrical current to a regular fluorescent bulb. When lit through induction, the quality of the light is also different. Compared to standard fluorescent lighting, the bulb’s glow is less harsh overall, and is slightly brighter in the side closest to the field source. The temperature of the light given off depends on the amount and type of gas in the bulbs. The Induction Wall Light offers an opportunity to find interesting new uses for existing materials without letting them go to waste. Rather than destroying a fluorescent bulb, which would release gases that might be environmentally harmful (i.e. Argon and Mercury gases are commonly used in fluorescent bulbs), the

Induction Wall Light can power any intact fluorescent bulb. It demonstrates that there is still life left in old bulbs even though they seem exhausted. The Induction Wall Light received Best Lighting Design at the 2018 AZ Awards, in addition to a Metropolis Magazine award in New York during ICFF 2018. About Castor Castor Design is a Toronto-based practice run by Brian Richer (a trained architectural stone carver with a degree in English literature and philosophy) and Kei Ng (a trained architect with a background in set design). They are interested in the middle ground between art and design, bringing a sense of irreverence to each project. Materials and their reuse make up an important part of Castor’s aesthetic; burnt out bulbs to make lighting, a rusty shipping container to make a sauna. Castor Design has won awards from the A+ Awards, A’ Design, AZ Awards, and from numerous design shows. Castor’s products are sold in shops around the world, and they have worked on interior projects, custom lighting and furniture design, and public art commissions throughout North America, Europe, and Asia. Their experience in restaurants and love of music inspired them to open Parts & Labour, a space that combines a fine-dining room with a punk rock basement venue, and its offshoot, P&L Burger. n 2017, Ariston Thermo (Ariston), the number one Italian water-heating brand, launched the first-ever water heater that is exclusively designed to fit bathrooms in Housing and Development Board (HDB) flats or condominiums – the Ariston Andris Slim 20 (SL20). The SL20 was a big hit, especially among local new homeowners, because of its slim and beautiful design. This year, Ariston launches the same slim concept of storage water heater with 30L capacity to fit the needs of bigger homes or families with higher usage needs. This new model is called the Ariston Andris Slim 30 (SL30). The SL30 is also the first storage water heater in Singapore that comes with Ag+ Silver Ions to provide greater hygiene to its users. “Ariston has long been in the industry providing thermic comfort and energy efficiency. As we keep up with our promise of delivering safety, design and comfort, we ensure that we listen to our customers’ needs, and bring them solutions. We heard that our customers want the same beautiful and slim storage water heater design, but with bigger capacity. Here it is – the SL30 is made especially for this group of people! We heard that our customers want improved technology for greater hygiene, and we specially designed the new SL30 to come with Ag+ Silver Ions.” Says Mr. Richard Chua, Director of Ariston South East Pacific. Ag+ Silver Ions for Improved Water Hygiene Bacteria grow in very diverse conditions, and are commonly present in water. To step up on its ability to provide cleaner water to its users, Ariston Thermo Group developed the Ag+ technology to inhibit bacteria proliferation in its water tanks. With the Ag+ cartridge technology, the SL30 comes with an added anti-bacterial feature to actively stop the proliferation of E-Coli, Salmonella, Legionella, Mold, Fungi and more.

Silver spheres are placed inside the tank in a customized cartridge, at the level of the water inlet pipe, allowing the water contained in the tank to receive bacteriostatic effect by coming in contact with Ag+ spheres. As a result, water produced from the SL30 water heater is cleaner and more hygienic for its users. Slim, Elegant and Smart Use of Space Space has always been a concern for the majority of Singaporean homeowners. The new four-room HDB flat measures around 90sqm in size, and with the tight space, homeowners have to be smart in space planning. SL30 is made specifically to address Singaporean homeowners’ concern for space and design, with the following properties:

• The slimmest 30L water heater design in Singapore. It will fit perfectly onto the beams at HDB and condominium bathrooms.

• Italian designed to suit any kind of bathroom decorations, no longer a need to hide unsightly water heaters

• Safety and Durability

With over 85 years of history in the water-heating industry, Ariston prides itself on its Total Safety System (TSS). In fact, the water heaters have been certified by the most safety organizations in the world, and meet the world’s strictest quality and safety standards such as International Electrotechnical Commission and Singapore Standards. The SL30 also promises extra durability through the use of a copper-heating element. The tank is made with super-ecologic insulation materials and energy can be better conserved through its improved titanium-enamel tank. For more information, visit www.ariston.com.

he power to innovate and an economical approach to resource consumption are two key factors for long-term quality of life – and not just as individuals but for global society at large. German company SCHELL develops, manufactures and distributes high-quality valves for public sanitary facilities. Time and again, these products have set milestones when it comes to hygiene, saving water and design for public and commercial wash rooms, showers and toilets. They are also available in Singapore. For nearly 90 years, SCHELL has developed and produced regulating angle valves, appliance connection valves and fittings for washbasins, showers, toilets and urinals in public sanitary facilities at its company headquarters in the heart of Germany. Today, the family-run business and its workforce of over 450 employees is one of Europe’s market and technology leaders, and a prize-winning innovator among German businesses. In demand worldwide, SCHELL products have also been available via a subsidiary in Singapore for the last two years. The expert for valve technology made its name in Germany and Europe with regulating angle valves. These valves form the interface between the drinking water system and the fitting itself, and ensure the secure connection of the fitting as well as precise separation. Thanks to continuous optimisation and innovation, SCHELL has transformed the regulating angle valve into what it is today: a guarantor for a water system that is both safe and economical. The regulating function permits water consumption to be cut by up to 40 percent without loss of user comfort at the valve.

28

These advantages make the regulating angle valve into a part that is in demand worldwide. Over 500,000,000 units had been installed by the end of 2015. Alongside the original, SCHELL has developed regulating angle/appliance connection valves that offer additional features. As one example, the innovative regulating angle valve with a built-in filter protects valuable taps by trapping harmful particulates. From the outset, the company’s second line of business has been sanitary fittings: from washbasin taps to shower taps and panels, WC and urinal flushing units and matching mounting modules. Raw materials are always chosen for their compliance with drinking water regulations. Various actuation techniques are used to meet the particular requirements of public sanitary facilities. Manual actuation corresponds to the kind of handling familiar in residential applications. The actuation mechanism with self-

closing cartridge interrupts the flow of water while the hands are being soaped, for example, and when hand washing is complete. This can cut water consumption by up to 50 percent. Even more economical – and especially hygienic – are electronic fittings with an infra-red sensor that actuates without being touched. Water flows only when it is actually needed and users cannot simply forget to turn off the taps. This can result in water savings of up to 60 percent. A recent highlight is the XERIS tap range, featuring a timeless, rectilinear design and available with both actuation mechanisms. Programmable stagnation flushes for electrical fittings and optional thermal disinfection for all models ensure – as is the case with all SCHELL valves – the greatest possible level of drinking water hygiene. All of the innovations from SCHELL pursue the common goal of safeguarding the health of users of public sanitary facilities at all times, and supporting the long-term safety and hygiene of drinking water systems. And a goal that is successfully met by SCHELL products every day. For more information, visit www.schell.sg.

L’HÔTEL DE BETHMANN Text & photos by Mickaël Martins Afonso

Project Details Localisation: Bordeaux, France Completion Date: October 2017 Area: 400 m²

In this mansion, the living space is revealed by the encounter between past and present. It is in the interpretation and the articulation of the existing architectural signs that has emerged the project, where each new architecture fragment fits and dances in its context. Anchored on the edge of the Jardin Public in the center of Bordeaux, the fourfloor mansion from 1850 opens up to this beautiful garden, unveiling its majestic scenery over the seasons. Thanks to a strong heritage context, the challenge of this rehabilitation was to create a new living environment adapted to current needs, without distorting what was already there, while at the same time bringing a new strength that wouldn’t fall into a simple mimicry. Highlighting What Already Existed With Contrast The owners aimed at renovating this building to make it more suitable to their lifestyle, more comfortable and, above all, mirroring their tastes. The renovation involved a complete refurbishing of the interior, while including a partial thermal rehabilitation respecting the existing conditions of the building.

34

35

project focus| l’hôtel de bethmann

The interiors have been designed to keep the charm of these old spaces, bringing a contemporary twist along. The old and the new were to flatter each other through this game of contrasts. The allocation of the internal spaces of the building resulted in the following room-fitting: On the ground floor, two living rooms and a kitchen; on the first floor, a more intimate living room, the office, and a fitness room with a bathroom; on the second floor, a master suite, with a large bedroom, a dressing room and a large bathroom; on the third floor, two children’s bedrooms with adjoining bathrooms; on the fourth floor, an en-suite guest room.

36

project focus| l’hôtel de bethmann

The ground floor hosts two magnificent living rooms separated by the kitchen. The latter extends into the largest living room, opening out on the garden. The kitchen unveiling the living room consists of three distinct elements: a one-piece central furniture, a furniture against the wall based on the proportions of the central furniture and a walnut cabinet. These three parts communicate with each other without overshadowing what was previously built, the central furniture is favoured by such a block of ice in a warm environment. Each bathroom has been designed according to its context, the spacious parent’s bathroom, all in length, is materialized by two strips, one clear and one dark, blending the floor, wall and ceiling as a single element. The children’s bathroom has a more traditional tiling work, echoing ceilings with cornices, the floors reminiscent of a checkerboard, with diagonal tile floor compositions. The colours’ choice also contributes to the overall staging. Both subtle in the living rooms or the bedrooms, it becomes more contrasted in the bathrooms or antechambers. Numerous details punctuate these spaces, for instance the choice of materials as stretched carpets in wool, or the careful implementation of materials as the thinning edges of the porcelain stoneware generating “bird’s beaks”, or simply the care given to the custommade product. OASIA HOTEL Text & photos by Agrob Buchtal

The Oasia Hotel in the central business district Singapore is by all means and standards a unique project, redefining what a high-rise can be in humid tropical climates. In contrast with the conventional, completely sealed-off, air-conditioned tower, this hotel, designed by local office WOHA, merges architecture and nature, and combines indoor and outdoor spaces in a striking fashion. According to the architects, the aim was ‘to create an alternative imagery for commercial high-rise developments. It combines innovative ways to intensify land use with a tropical approach that showcases a perforated, permeable, furry, verdant tower.’ The tower, which has a height of 190 metres, contains four large outdoor spaces: three enormous verandas on the 6th, 12th, and 21st floor, as well as a roof terrace on 27th floor. This roof terrace is surrounded and protected by a 10-storey-high screen, covered in the same red aluminium mesh cladding as the rest of the tower. This facade will gradually be overgrown by 21 species of creepers and vines, creating a lively contrast between vibrant reds and lush greens. The Oasia is, like the majority of WOHA’s work, located in Singapore. WOHA was founded in 1994 by Singaporean Wong Mun Summ in partnership with Richard Hassell, who hails from Australia and moved to Singapore in 1989. While

accompanied by humourless earnestness, WOHA shows that it prefers to stand apart. This Oasia Hotel, which is part of an eponymous chain, combines sustainability with delight, two terms that are prominently present in the office’s design philosophy. Aside from the red façade – soon to be completely green – the sky gardens also offer greenery, fresh air, and opportunities for natural cross-ventilation, as well as representing the most visibly sustainable and delightful, aspects of the building. The sky gardens came about in response to the client’s brief, which asked for distinct parts in the hotel. Given the small footprint, WOHA adopted what they call ‘a club sandwich approach by creating a series of different strata, each with its own sky garden.’ Introducing these sky gardens, which WOHA describes as ‘elevated ground levels’, allowed ‘the precious but limited ground floor space to be multiplied, creating generous public areas for recreation and social interaction throughout the high-rise.’ While WOHA can be credited for the architecture of the tower itself and the concept of stacking layers, the actual design of the sky gardens is the work of Spanish designer and architect Patricia Urquiola, who was responsible for all interiors as well as the outdoor spaces of the hotel. Urquiola adds a breezy elegance to WOHA’s delightfully quirky architecture. For the pools on the 21st and 27th floor, she has used AGROB BUCHTAL tiles from the Chroma series. Each pool has a different character. The pool on the sixth floor is part of a gym; on the 21th floor, the pool acts as a stylish extension of the lounge club. Left and right of the pool itself, which is tiled in a light and dark blue chevron pattern, is a wading pool, just deep enough to get your feet wet while sipping a cocktail. The rooftop pool consists of two parts, on either side of the rooftop restaurant. Unlike most rooftop amenities in hotels, which are all about the panorama, here the city’s skyline is almost completely concealed by the vegetated screen. This underlines the unconventionality of WOHA’s architecture. Instead of a view, this rooftop offers a place of unexpected intimacy and tranquillity, a surprisingly oasitic escape from the bustle of the city. About AGROB BUCHTAL As a specialist in architectural ceramics, AGROB BUCHTAL offers an extensive portfolio of products and services for contemporary and forward-looking building and design using ceramics. The company’s history dates back into the 18th century. Today, AGROB BUCHTAL is a global player firmly rooted in Germany. The richlyvaried tile collections and special tailored solutions are used all over the world – on the facade of a prize-winning residential complex in London or on the roof of the Museum of Cultures in Basle, in a swimming pool in Shenzhen, on a promenade in Abu Dhabi or in Munich’s underground railway network. kitchen feature| let it sink in

1. Stainless Steel Stainless steel kitchen sinks are costeffective choice and are one of the most popular materials and commonly used for kitchen sinks for many years. They have different size, shapes and colour finishes available. A stainless steel sink is lighter than other material & they can be fitted nicely with more flexibility in designs like single bowl, double bowl & with or without drainer. Stainless steel sinks are durable and long lasting. They require very low maintenance. The material is rust free and crack resistant so long as you take care properly and clean it after every use. Other than that, stainless steel sinks are able to resist high temperature & that is why hot water can be poured into the sink directly. In general, stainless steel sink is a more preferred choice for the user & around 70% end users prefer stainless steel in Singapore. However, the colour of stainless steel sink is very common in the market. Recently, the trend has been the tendency to black such as Reginox Miami range. Other colours like copper & gold are also available in the market.

2. Granite Sink Granite sink is becoming increasingly popular in the market in recent years. Granite sink has a modern, solid and natural surface feel & look. They also come in a range of colours, sizes and styles for you to select one that match & blend in the design with the rest of your kitchen. Most of the granite sink are heated, stain and scratch resistant. They have anti-bacterial surface which is also easy to clean. To maintain granite sink, we highly recommend users to clean it after every use. No harsh chemicals are needed or advised. Price of the granite sink in generally is more expensive than stainless steel sink. But, there are people who prefer over it than stainless steel as it is scratch resistant. Since granite sink is far less common than stainless steel sink, it gives users a fresh and unique touch when one visits his/her home. Granite sink is available in many range of colours & of course, the most popular colour is black. Black colour granite sink is the easiest to mix and match with your kitchen design. The crowning of the Chronos doors, a key feature of this model, becomes the motivation of a complete furnishing project, which includes the kitchen and living spaces in a broad sense, to include the walls and doors of passage. The trait d'union of the spaces, the boiserie in solid wood lacquered in the gray celadon shade contrasts chromatically with the canaletto walnut of the furnishings. As with all the nineteenth-century proposals, Chronos also combines stylistic refinement, precious materials and high-tech solutions. Completing the kitchen is the top in SilestoneÂŽ quartz in the Altair Suede finish, the table in wood that comes on from the peninsula in continuity with the decorative band of the bases and the refrigerator, oven and pantry units in matching color with the boiserie. www.lottocento.it

by Rational German kitchen innovator Rational, has released several new colours and finishes for 2017 including this compact cubiclooking Atmos range in an indigo and gold combination. This design focuses on elegant, clean lines that convey an understated symmetry. The central island is shown here in a new indigo super matt lacquer finish, whilst the wall units offer a striking contrast in a new gold effect laminate. The overall design is further enhanced by the gold highlights featured in the 10cm thick Dekton Marmor Black Fusion worktop. www.rational.de/en
