ingapore’s interior design industry is set to make waves worldwide with the re-launch of one of Singapore’s oldest interior design associations – the Society of Interior Designers Singapore (SIDS) and its inaugural Singapore Interior Design Awards (SIDA), Singapore’s first international interior design award. The twin milestones were unveiled at a special launch ceremony held at today’s Visual Asia Expo – Asia’s seminal visual communication trade show – with a display of a comprehensive range of visual design and product solutions, market innovations, lighting, LED and emerging technologies in the highly energized, rapidly converging Asian marketplace. SIDS is also the only Singapore organization which is a member of the Asia Interior Design Institute Association (AIDIA).

Far left, Mr Raj Shah, Honorary advisor of SIDS Singapore, interacting with the public

Spearheaded by multiple award-winning Singaporean designer, Mr Keat Ong, the renewed SIDS has a new mission for the industry. He is the current Managing Director of the internationallyacclaimed Nota Design Group. Mr Ong said: “As the region develops, the demand for construction, interior design, fit-out, and architectural services will also grow. And Singapore, as an established knowledge economy, is well-poised to promote a shift to a high-tech creative economy in sectors such as lifestyle, creative agencies, including design: industrial, fashion, technology, architecture and interior design. Entrepreneurs with a passion for design will have an opportunity to become pioneers in this growing sector. We also aim to attract the most creative people locally and regionally to enter the profession in Singapore. This helps Singapore become more competitive in an increasingly design-conscious world.”

From left, Lau Choon Hong (Council Member), Ms Kat Tan (Honorary Secretary), Ms Cindy Ang (Honorary Treasurer), Mr Keat Ong (President), Mr Raj Shah and Mr Hendra Sutedjo (Honorary Advisors)

“While we want to attract and nurture design talent here, SIDS under the current society leadership, also intends to create an external wing for Singapore’s interior design industry. We want to carve out a forward-thinking, outward-looking strategy to allow our organization to act as a bridge for our local design talent to expand beyond our local shores. We have a lot to share with the world. We will also work with other professional bodies in different foreign cities to share and exchange knowledge to better our profession. In line with our strategy, the council has also revised our traditional membership structure to allow foreign (but non-voting) memberships to add to the diversity of the society,” Mr Ong said. To champion Singapore as a global hub for interior design and to give recognition to outstanding interior designers from around the world, SIDS has launched its inaugural SID Awards or SIDA. SIDA is open to all interior designers from Singapore and overseas. “Singapore’s architecture and interior design industry is among the best in the world. To further improve the industry’s professional standards, we will be inviting some of the most talented design professionals in the world, to participate in our

eyonics Pte. Ltd. (“Beyonics”), a strategic manufacturing partner providing integrated precision parts and electronics manufacturing solutions to global OEMs, has signed a definitive agreement with AIMS AMP Capital Industrial REIT ("AA REIT") for a Build-to-Suit facility in Singapore that, when completed, will enable the company to integrate all of its precision engineering service solutions in Singapore in a single location. With a footprint of over 230,000 square feet, the new campus located on Marsiling Lane will serve as Beyonics global headquarters employing approximately 600 personnel. Processes undertaken at the facility will include mould making, plastics injection moulding, deep-drawn metal stamping, and medical & surgical devices assembly. The build-to-suit facility will be developed from the ground-up to serve as a fully integrated engineering and manufacturing facility across all of Beyonics service lines. When completed, the campus will enable Beyonics to combine and showcase all of its service offerings in one location. Scott D. Smith, Chief Executive Officer of Beyonics, said: “This 21st century campus integrates our combined expertise across precision manufacturing and engineering in a modern and advanced facility. It will be designed to serve both our existing and new clients with particular emphasis in the high reliability segments of Automotive and Medical segments. It will include cleanroom operations for certain Class III drug delivery products and ReAgent filling for Point-of-Care kit used in certain cancer testing. The benefits of having all our services lines in a single facility are tremendous for our customers and employees, creating scale and efficiency that will secure Beyonics’ future as the leading precision manufacturer in Asia.”

This is part of Beyonics’ modernisation plan to upgrade all of its plants in Asia. In November 2015, Beyonics opened a new stateof-the-art campus located within iPark @ Indahpura, Kulaijaya in Johor, Malaysia, as well as an expanded high-technology manufacturing campus in Changshu, Jiangsu province, China in December 2015. Kyle Shaw, Chairman of Beyonics and founder of ShawKwei & Partners, added: “The move to our new global headquarters represents another step in Beyonics transformation, our commitment to modernising all of our manufacturing facilities, and our desire to invest in Singapore. I’m sure that our employees will be proud to call this world-class facility their working home.” Beyonics is seeking Green Mark certification for the new facility from the Singapore Building and Construction Authority.

here are many good reasons to take a trip to the Alps: to get away from everyday life, breathe the clean mountain air and enjoy the view of the majestic rocky crests and the clear alpine lake. Now, in Melchsee-Frutt there is a new reason: the Frutt Family Lodge & Melchsee Apartments. The hotel complex opened in December 2015 with quality taps and showers by Axor and hansgrohe in the Spa and in the bathrooms. The newly built resort hotel is in the village of Melchsee-Frutt, a ski resort located at 1,920 metres above sea level in the canton Obwalden. ‘The Frutt’, situated on a high and sunny plateau, has been a Spa since 1865, and to this day, the idyllic spot remains free of cars. The pioneer Alois Reinhard opened the area’s first hotel in 1889. For nearly one hundred years, the Hotel Reinhard pampered holidaymakers, including distinguished and wealthy guests from all over Europe, in an elegant atmosphere. The Reinhard family also opened Switzerland’s longest cable car at Melchsee and installed a power generator – at the time Europe’s highest altitude power turbine. In 1985, the era came to an end and the buildings fell into disrepair until the Frutt Resort AG decided to revive the tradition and build the 4-star Frutt Family Lodge & Melchsee Apartments on the original hotel property. The new hotel has 47 rooms, suites and family suites, as well as 43 holiday flats. It is an imposing ensemble: four grey stone buildings with textured roughcast façades stand out like monoliths on the shores of the Melchsee lake. The modern, alpine style of the pitched-roof buildings hints at traditional chalet architecture. The cubes that make up the upper parts of the construction can withstand the extreme alpine weather conditions and seem to float on the glass plate façades that form the base of the building. This design gives the massive new construction a lightness that recalls the reflection of the mountains on the surface of the Melchsee lake. Philip Loskant, the architect, and Architekturwerk, the company responsible for the realisation of the project, used large

panorama windows to showcase the retreat’s stunning natural surroundings. Guests can enjoy spectacular views of the mountains and lake from their rooms and suites, as well as from the Spa, which comprises a swimming pool, sauna, steam bath and relaxation room. Whether soaking in the pool or relaxing in a lounge chair: contemplating this panorama soothes the mind and body. Entertainment is available in the lower lobby level, featuring a cinema, gym and bowling alley. Parents can enjoy all of this, even without their children: the hotel lives up to its name by offering special family packages that include professional childcare services. Philip Loskant, the architect, and interior designer Matthias Buser opted for a classic lodge style for the family rooms and suites. Natural materials, warm colours, abundant oak elements and modern furnishings give the interior design an understated elegance with a cosy chalet-like feel. A sustainable energy design was conceived for the entire complex, and 90 percent of the electricity used is generated from renewable sources. hansgrohe bathroom taps are the perfect fit, both visually and technically: The washbasins in the rooms and suites are equipped with single-lever taps from the Hansgrohe Metris line that use up to 60 percent less water than comparable products thanks to the Ecostat Comfort technology. Hansgrohe SE is based in Schiltach, in Germany’s Black Forest. In its 115-year history, it has acquired a reputation as a leading innovator in technology, design and sustainability in the sanitation industry. The mixers, showerheads and shower systems created by Hansgrohe SE are original products that make bathrooms more functional, more comfortable and more aesthetically pleasing. These quality products can be found in such prestigious venues as the luxury ocean liner Queen Mary II, London Heathrow Airport Terminal 5, the Burj Khalifa in Dubai (the world’s tallest building), the German Chancellery in Berlin, New York’s Yoo luxury residences and the Masdar City Institute of Science and Technology in Abu Dhabi.

he International Building and Construction Show (Big 5) is annually held from 21 – 24 November in the Dubai International Exhibition Center. As the largest and most influential architectural show in the Middle East, the Big 5 attracts attention from all over the world. Bravat, in its quest to expand to a global market, attached great importance to the Big 5.

The Big 5 show covers an area of more than 10,000 m2. As the leader in the sanitary industry, Bravat was one of the highlights of the show, presenting their trendy designs and diversified options for the local customers. The brand impresses customers with its simple design, aesthetical appearance and advanced technology. In Big 5 Show, a large number of professionals came to see exhibitions of Bravat, fascinated by their merits.

Countries in the Middle East boost their economy by relying on oil, which in turn leads the architecture industry into a prosperous era. This is especially evident in countries like the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Qatar, all members in Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC).

DIETSHE Group puts its ambition into global market, and so does Bravat. After years of elaboration in the Middle East, especially in GCC countries, Bravat triumphantly wins reputation and recommendation from customers.

Statistics from the Zawya Projects Monitor shows that total amount of architect projects in GCC will reach to $ 10850 billion by 2037. The UAE, with the largest amount at $ 5138.4 billion, ranks the first and is followed by Saudi Arabia at $3354.7 billion. The prosperity of the architecture industry results in a great demand for architectural instruments, materials and facilities, which provides great developing opportunities for the sanitary industry in the Middle East market.

aufen has always chosen to work with outstanding names in design, for the creation of products and their communication as well as for their exhibition settings: for the new showroom in Madrid the company has turned to Patricia Urquiola, the most highly acclaimed, prize-winning and versatile designer of the moment. The context of the new showroom, with an area of almost 200 square meters, is a historic villa from the early 1900s. Organized on two levels, it is a completely different, more engaging space with respect to the previous location. In this facility exclusively set aside for architects and designers, Patricia Urquiola brilliantly narrates the spirit of the Swiss company, applying a more sensitive approach. The designer of Spanish origin residing in Milan has responded fully to the expectations formulated in her dialogue with Laufen Bathrooms: her flexible talent has generated a space of vivid experience, a realistic, informal setting that is perfect to welcome industry professionals. A new showroom concept, like a sort of training centre, where technicians and architects can meet and work together. The shared perspectives of the philosophy of Laufen and the genius of Patricia Urquiola are undoubtedly rigor and functional quality. These aspects are reflected in the environment and enhanced by the ability to trigger emotions, in an affective rapport between the viewer and the collections on display,

stimulating the designer and architect to make Laufen products a part of their projects, and therefore a part of everyday life. Urquiola uses a modern language to interpret the interior of the villa, in a more flexible and international way. Every room is framed with a tubular natural black iron frame embellished with a gold galvanized finish in the corners. The colours and the materials take inspiration from the exclusive materials used for the design of the bathroom. Marbles mixed with onyx, mirror glass, resin, oak wood and iron in light tones, with contrasting points of colour.

ekton® by Cosentino, the innovative ultra-compact surface by the Cosentino Group for the world of architecture and design, launches three new proposals of ultra-lustrous colours for its Dekton® XGloss line. Nature and natural stone have served as the inspiration in the creation of Glacier, Fiord and Tundra. These unique and exclusive designs have once again highlighted Cosentino’s capacity for innovation.

Dekton® XGloss Natural

Dekton® XGloss, the innovative line of polished high-tech ultracompact surfaces, characterised by its dazzling, crystalline shine, came into being in February 2016, with five unique colours, included in the "Dekton® XGloss Solid" collection, by virtue of their smooth, strong and even finishes. The emergence of Glacier, Fiord and Tundra gives rise to a new collection: "Dekton® XGloss Natural", named for their resemblance to the authenticity and magnificence only to be found in the colours and textures of natural stone.

Inspired by nature, Fiord recaptures the beauty of the most luxurious cream tones of Onyx. Yellows, earthen colours and other intense tones make up the range within Fiord, infusing it with warmth and unmistakable nuances. The original randomness of its design lends a natural, unique and dazzling structure to its finish. Fiord is sophistication in its purest essence.

Glacier, Fiord and Tundra pay homage to the nobility, history and timeless qualities of materials used since ancient times. In these three colours, aesthetic beauty is fused with the fascinating luminosity and high-tech quality which only a surface like Dekton® can provide. No other comparable surface available today, achieves such a fusion of aesthetics and technical performance. “The Dekton® XGloss Natural series will add new dimension to the design and architectural scene in Singapore. We look forward to the fresh perspectives that these three new additions will bring across,” says Rakean Aruman, Marketing Manager of Cosentino Asia.

Inspired by natural stone, Glacier displays a fine marbling of a golden colour on a white background. This is a lustrous proposal by virtue of its polished finish, and is an understated, subtle option, due to its remarkable colour. Glacier is the epitome of design, purity and elegance.

Inspired by natural stone, Tundra offers a white base with grey flecks running through it, which create and highlight unprecedented paths. Tundra with its candid, authentic appearance, recreates the properties of marble. With its remarkable structure of veins, its sumptuous luminosity and its subtle white background, Tundra is synonymous with infinite exquisiteness. These three new shades embody each and every one of the properties of Dekton® XGloss, achieved through advanced nanotechnology and mechanical polishing treatment to produce a dazzling, crystalline shine with unforgettably high levels of durability and strength. The spectacular appearance of Dekton® XGloss has been made possible because of a pioneering, exclusive treatment

process, developed by the R+D department at Cosentino, using nanotechnology. In addition to a wonderful luminosity, this process endows Dekton® XGloss with certain water-repellent properties, capable of producing an extraordinary resistance to staining, without altering the other properties of the material or adding coating to the surface. The Particle Sintering Technology (TSP) used in its manufacture with Dekton® XGloss has outstanding technical properties, including resistance to UV rays, abrasion, staining or thermal shock, thus making it the perfect material for both indoor and outdoor use: façades, kitchen or bathroom counter tops, floors and paving, stairs and other types of cladding. Dekton® is available for manufacture with the option of large slabs sizes of up to 144cm x 320cm and in thicknesses of 20mm, 12mm and 8mm thus increasing both its aesthetic and architectural possibilities. Dekton® by Cosentino continues to demonstrate that it is undoubtedly the best at working alongside designers and architects worldwide. For more information, visit www.dekton.com.sg.

or this year's Equip’Hotel, the prestigious hotel and restaurant trade fair that will be running in Paris from 6 - 10 November 2016, the Zucchetti. Kos Group will be partnering the Senses Room project. With more than 1600 exhibitors from more than 30 countries, Equip’Hotel is an important occasion for Zucchetti. Kos, which having realised the importance of the HORECA sector some time ago, created a special division with the ability to meet the most diverse design requirements, including working alongside architects and designers. Usually the design of the interiors of rooms for the disabled, which are an obligatory requirement in all buildings, does not pay any particular attention to the added values of design and wellness: the Senses Room event offers a different viewpoint and equips these spaces not only with luxury design products but also with light therapy, colour therapy, olfactory therapy, and music therapy. Beginning from the standards of universal design, the Senses Room is based on two principles: accessibility for the disabled and their families, and special consideration for families with small children. This challenge, which is being faced here for the second time by Francis van de Walle, the leading specialist in the luxury hotels sector, was to create a junior suite of 72 m² that would be able to receive everyone, without exception. The search for excellence that always aims for simplicity, design, and the real needs of the disabled, has created a more human environment by focusing on technology and the choice of materials, to guarantee the same standards as normal luxury hotel rooms. The bathroom space of the Senses Room is made more precious by pieces from the HIM collection designed by Ludovica+Roberto Palomba for Zucchetti: a shower assembly with a hand shower

and waterfall shower head, numerous accessories, and two basin mixers with a rose gold finish. The style of these products, with their pure, refined forms, perfectly harmonises with the environment and enriches it with further refinement and elegance. By accepting to participate in such a type of project the Zucchetti. Kos group is demonstrating its sensitivity to issues of disability and accessibility that are too often forgotten by the world of design. Always attentive to developments in design and market, Zucchetti. Kos proposes solutions that foresee the trends of the future.

As with all Lambert & Fils collections, Laurent is designed, manufactured and assembled locally. Lambert et Fils is a Montreal-based lighting design studio founded in 2010 by Samuel Lambert. AGAPE ADORNS ELLE DECOR GRAND HOTEL MILANO Text & photos by Agape Design

Palazzo Morando has been converted into a striking Grand Hotel interpreted, in accordance with Elle Decor aesthetic codes, as a pathway to be experienced in person, walking through all the different premises designed for socialising, reading, wellness and hospitality, free to browse around the bedrooms, lounges and gardens. This installation-project bears the hallmark of Patricia Urquiola, who designed the more private premises, the so-called “Stanzas”, and Piero Lissoni, who was responsible for the public spaces that are designed like those of a “Hôtel Particulier”.

38

Patricia Urquiola’s “Stanzas” are rooms designed like a sequence of moments spread across a story about modern-day travellers, not standardised and repetitive “showrooms”, but intimate and personal spaces, where you can hide away, be on your own and relax, while feeling completely safe and protected. A perfect combination of product and project that is an ideal embodiment of the cross-the-board services offered by the hospitality industry. All the bathrooms bear the Agape hallmark. Stanza for 1 welcomes in its guests playing on the similarities and structures of theVieques washbasin and bathtub, both with a grey finish on the outside and completed by white Fez taps.

Stanza for 2 features a series of combinations and repetitions designed to create a setting in which both privacy and sharing enhance each other reciprocally. The sleeping quarters, with two beds placed “face-to-face”, stand alongside the bathroom area, complete with two Cuna bathtubs in a brand-new beige finish with a dark grey structure and brushed burnished Memory taps.

project focus| agape adorns elle decor grand hotel milano

The Stanza for 2 also features free-standing Bijhon washbasins designed by Angelo Mangiarotti coming in Marquinia black combined with a Bucatini mirror, but also available in a white Carrara marble version, both with brushed burnished Memory taps and two Flat D showers. A space designed for interaction and sharing, as well as luxury in your own privacy. Stanza for 3 is something between a private space and shared communal areas. Each of the 3 beds is designed like a moving island complete with 3 micro bathroom spaces presenting Patricia Urquiola’s Lariana washbasin for the very first time that completes the collection of the same name, together with Memory taps with the latest satin gold finish. The “salle de l’eau” (water room) features an In-Out bathtub in two-tone Exmar complete with satin gold Memory taps combined with the Flat D shower with a satin gold Memory shower head. Thanks to her great humanity, in-depth technical know-how and tireless vocation for experimentation, Patricia Urquiola has become one of the leading figures in modern-day design, who is also in charge of the artistic direction of some of the most important Italian and international companies. Her products are on display in museums all over the world. Since 2004 this Italian-Spanish designer has been working with Agape, designing projects for the Pear and Vieques ranges, icons that now stand alongside some of the company’s classic products, which have already won numerous awards, such as the Adi Design Index and Elle Decor International Design Awards. A partnership further enhanced by the recent presentation of the Cuna and Lariana bathtubs, which will soon be matched with coordinated washbasins in various different versions.

DURAVIT EXPLORES BARRIER-FREE Text & photos by Duravit

Future planning for all generations As bathrooms have a long service life, it is all the more important to think ahead and consider future requirements. When planned carefully, the comfortable bathroom of today can meet the needs of elderly users tomorrow or even be completely barrier-free. Comfort, flexibility and safety can exist alongside sophisticated design in a welcoming atmosphere. Variety at the washing area The washing area is the central functional area of the bathroom. It is in frequent use and has to be easily accessible from the front and also safe to use. The ideal solution: consoles with built-in or above counter basins that provide legroom for comfortable use of the washing area, even when seated. In addition, above counter washbasins enable a raised

40

washing position. Thanks to ample storage areas, all care products can be kept within easy reach. From wood decors and high-gloss varnishes to realwood veneers, the practical consoles also offer lots of different possibilities for creating an individual look. Particularly flat washbasins, such as the Vero washbasin that is just 165 mm high, are comfortable to use when seated and, available in widths of 50, 60, 70 or 80 cm, do not take up lots of space. The same applies to the Vital models in the D-Code, DuraStyle, Starck 3 or Architec series that also meet current DIN standards 18024/II and 18025/I+II for barrier-free bathrooms and that are wheelchair-accessible. For an optimum effect, mirrors and shelves should be easily accessible or moveable from different heights.

41

project focus| duravit explores barrier-free

Comfortable use of the toilet Even those with slightly reduced mobility may find it difficult to use the toilet. The SensoWash C and SensoWash Slim showertoilets are also suitable for people with restricted mobility and really facilitate hygiene: a stainless steel spray arm with three shower types performs the function of a bidet. Operation is easy via remote control. The height of the seat is also crucial for optimum comfort when using the toilet. The Starck 3 wall-mounted WC offers a five centimetres higher seated position making it easier for the user to stand up again after using the toilet. As it works with existing connections, it is ideal for renovation projects. Sufficient room for manoeuvre in front of the toilet ensures safe and comfortable mobility, even if a walking frame or wheelchair

42

is needed at some point in the future. Handles that can be added at the sides later on, prevent falls, whilst toilet-paper holders and flush plates within easy reach further enhance comfort. Of course, special Vital models from the D-code, Architec and Starck series are also available to match the washbasins. The 700 mm projection complies with current DIN standards. Fold-out grab bars that are firmly fixed in position and that have an integrated toilet-paper holder are used as transfer devices. A back support also offers additional relief, just in case. Flush-fitting shower A flush-fitting shower tray is not only the best solution from a visual point of view but it is also easy to clean, safe and helps to prevent falls. Shower trays with dimensions 120 x 120 cm meet the criteria

project focus| duravit explores barrier-free

of DIN 18025/I + II and 18040-2E for barrier-free bathrooms and also offer sufficient room for manoeuvre – even for an additional helper. The models in three different materials are ideal for forward planning: the DuraPlan shower tray with Anti-slip coating made of sanitary acrylic is the elegant classic. In the P3 Comforts shower tray made of the new DuraSolid A with slip-resistant properties, the easy-clean outlet is beautifully integrated in a slightly raised shelf. The Stonetto shower tray meets highest aesthetic requirements and is made of DuraSolid Q that has an outstanding look and feel. The matte surface looks like authentic stone and is slip-resistant. It is available in the colours White, Sand and Anthracite. A shower seat offers additional safety and comfort in the shower and folds away for maximum convenience. Comfort and quality of life Well-planned and well-executed measures for greater accessibility not only improve quality of life and enhance the everyday comfort that is so important to the elderly, but they also increase the value of a property. In addition, thinking ahead when planning a new bathroom also enables its users to live independently for as long as possible.

DYNAMIC WORKINGS OF LAUFEN Text & photos by Laufen

At Orgatec in Cologne from 25 to 29 October, the bathroom specialist Laufen partnered the furniture manufacturer Vitra on the ‘Work’ exhibition platform. Located in Hall 5.2, ‘Work’ examines the question as to how dynamic rooms can be created to satisfy today’s concept of work. Within the framework of this concept, Laufen presented with a 50 square metre stand which has been designed by the Italian architects and designers Ludovica and Roberto Palomba. On the stand both public and semi-public sanitary areas

44

were focused, and the relationship between the private sphere and common use of these areas were examined. “For Laufen this is one of the central questions in modern office environments, because the sport and health-oriented generations seek hygiene and intimacy there, too,” explains Marc Viardot, Director of Marketing and Products at Laufen, “so teeth cleaning and showering are perhaps already part of everyday office life for many people.”

In addition, Laufen presented selected products and technologies for public and semipublic sanitary areas from the current portfolio – including amongst other things solutions for compact floor plans, for high standards of hygiene, water saving and bespoke solutions. “With our presentation within the framework of the Vitra ‘Work’ platform we are seeking expert discourse with planners of offices and work facilities, architects, interior planners and designers, and would like make a contribution towards a common and holistic perspective of the modern working environment”, explained Viardot.

BREAKING BARRIERS Someone once declared that, “We are all united in the single belief that we are, secretly, different from everyone else.” It was an interesting thought nugget that cannot be proven as no one can conduct a survey across the world population. If we hold it to be true, then isn’t it strange that for all our urgency in creating an identity for ourselves, we let our homes succumb to normalcy? Everyone’s bathroom looks the same as any other. Yes, the elements are the safe – a shower or bath tub, a basin, a water closet. But there has to be a differentiating factor; how else can your living quarters reflect your personality? Here is a selection of different bathroom spaces, varying in mood and style, all focusing on different aspects of what differentiates a bathroom. 65

INNOVATIVE CONCEPTS FROM SPAIN

Roca implements a modern and fresh design with the new Inspira bathroom collection. Andrea Sim reports.

R

oca, the leading global brand from Spain specialising in bathroom design and products for the architectural construction and interior design spaces, unveiled its latest bathroom collection, Inspira, on Oct 26. The range of Roca bathroom products were showcased in a pop-up concept at the outdoor space just a stone’s throw away from the iconic Singapore Indoor Stadium. Running in conjunction with The BNP Paribas WTA Finals Singapore, a tennis festival held over 10 days beginning Oct 21 with eight days of elite competition, the event was presented by SC Global returning for the third year running (opposite page). One of the exciting highlights was the Greatest Eight Women singles players and doubles teams, comprising of renowned players such as Serena Williams, Agnieszka Radwanska, Garbine Muguruza, Carla Suarez Navarro, Angelique Kerber, Simona Halep, Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis who came to compete in women’s tennis of WTA Finals as they vied for US$7 million in prize money. “Roca and the players participating at the WTA Finals 2016 have a lot in common... we are thrilled to be associated with the best tennis players, sharing same aspiration, passion and dedication in BNP Paribus WTA Finals Singapore,” said Raimundo Garcia-Figueras, Senior Managing Director of Asia Bathroom Products Division Executive Board. Over to the business area at Roca, Josep Delicado, Managing Director of Singapore and Malaysia for Roca Bathroom Products Singapore led the guided tour, who takes the viewpoint of what constitutes a modern bathroom reflecting on the collective work and concepts of Roca adaptable to new market trends and cutting edge technology. Roca’s design and innovation for quality and sustainable development are seen exemplified in its latest Inspira collection. Since the trend of “integrated home technology took off in 2013, from lights controlled by apps to music in the shower and bathroom, these new technology offerings represent a shift based on consumer demand for greater customisation in the home. This year, new products in the bathroom are going one step further, offering customers more options and opportunities to fine-tune designs to best suit their lifestyle,” explained Mr Delicado. At the showcase, the curated selection of Roca bathroom elements was handily collated and incorporated into the spaces with a contemporary style to get consumers to think about accommodating a blend of bathroom essentials with a balance of advanced aesthetics to construct a private bathroom that is clutterfree and space-saving. Product highlights of Roca bathroom elements focused on fittings such as mirrors, taps, sinks, showers, touchless toilet flush system, toilet seats and covers, bidets and bathroom furniture units. During the walkthrough session, Mr Delicado explained that fine ceramics, which is a new high quality material exclusive by Roca as seen in the Inspira basin collection is about 40 per cent lighter, 30 per cent harder and more resistant to abrasive products than other conventional basins.

The Inspira furniture units (above) come in three finishes of glossy white, city oak and city oak with dark mirror, contrast attractively with the interior lighting and full length mirror. While the drawer units’ interiors (top right) highlight the beauty of dark textured wood finish with dividers included to keep items neat and organised. The collection optimises the use of three design lines to complement harmoniously with multiple design combinations. Such simplicity and pleasing aesthetics can be observed in the range of in countertop, wall-hung or over countertop basins, available in round, soft or square. The Inspira basins are easier to clean with soft and rounded angled surfaces, and the basins are made of 100 per cent ceramic. However, Mr Delicado also noticed a subtle difference Asia and the West have when choosing colour tones to match their bathroom elements. The West tends to gravitate towards a darker tone. However, in Asia, “Soothing tones, such as crisp white, earthy brown and warm neutrals, are often used to decorate Asian bathrooms, as they infuse a space with a peaceful and welcoming vibe,” enthused Mr Delicado. “Asian-style bathrooms provide the perfect spot in which to rest, unwind and recover at the end of each day. A sense of tranquility, well-being, balance and visual harmony is at the heart of the design aesthetic, which evokes these qualities with the use of clean lines, minimalist decor, soothing colour schemes and natural materials,” said Mr Delicado. Black is the predominent colour for classic and sophistication and the colour commonly makes an appearance in Asian-inspired

rooms. He added, “Don’t be afraid to experiment as gray hues are showing up everywhere, and this colour is becoming sort of a ‘new’ neutral. This hue, which shows up in sinks and tubs and is particularly intended for customers who want something a little different, but at the same time do not want flamboyance.” Colours have the power to enliven or to dull any space but not so if you play with slicks of white to cut through the moody hue to create a sophisticated look. “If you’re worried a gray palette will make your bathroom feel flat and lifeless, you could also energise the space by adding a splash of bold, eye-popping colour. While a palette of moody black and rich brown may appear heavy and overwhelming in some bathrooms, tone it down with cool white tub and a floor-to-ceiling window that floods the area with natural light. Blissful Zen-inspired bath zone sets the scene for rest and relaxation. Neutral-toned walls add warmth and an inviting ambiance, while the bath, vanity and accessories in crisp white, uplift the look,” said Mr Delicado. Another notable ranges are the close-couple Inspira WCs, seats and covers. Mr Delicado elaborated that the wall-hung version of the WC (top, bottom right) is optimised for greater hygiene where uniform water distribution covers the entire inner surface of the bowl. The seats and covers are manufactured with Supralit, an exclusive resin registered by Roca, made to be more resistant to chemical agents and to yellowing, thereby are reliable and durable. The seats and covers also offer soft-close hinges that avoid blows and noises.

Interview Are you planning to renovate your bathroom, remodel it or improve the bathroom space on a strict budget? We recognise that bathroom improvement can be quite a challenge, especially ensuring the finished scheme is in harmony with the interior style and space. BATHROOM + KITCHEN TODAY caught up with Josep Delicado, Managing Director of Singapore and Malaysia for Roca Bathroom Products Singapore, to share his insights about the latest bathroom trends and tips for constructing a contemporary and private bathroom. Read on for some of the new advances of the Inspira collection and you might just find unique solutions required to fully equip your bathroom spaces.

Mr Josep Delicado

What inspired the Inspira bathroom collection? Inspired by the modern day’s interpretation of simplicity and elegant bath concepts, the logical interfaces for applications such as the showers and toilets are designed to be practical yet easily accessible for everyone. Our design solution features ceramic sanitary ware in three different shapes – round, soft and square. The new series of completely integrated smart toilets will ensure lasting hygiene, making cleaning easier, while the overall design blends in effortlessly with all kinds of bathroom fittings, thanks to the elegant and subtle lines. What is the trend right now and what do you think consumers are looking for in today’s bathroom design? Bath are becoming less flashy and more focused on users experience where consumers can indulge privately, with an emphasis on comfort, personal statement, and style. The trend of transforming a bathroom into a spa getaway is emerging and consumers are in favour of it. Standalone tubs are gaining momentum, adding a level of vintage elegance to any bathroom. For those without a larger space to separate off the tub from the shower are looking for design innovations that would maximise spaces for a more comfortable showering experience. So, integrating various water sources into the shower can create a relaxing getaway – even in small spaces. While keeping things clutter-free and organised are essential and we have spacesaving storage that comes with customisable options for size, configuration, finish and bathroom organisation. What are some of the key things/ideas to think about when designing a home bathroom? The bath or shower room should be functional and practical, but also a place where you enter and utilise the amenity to unwind. Whether you are putting together an ensuite bathroom from scratch or revamping a wet room, asking yourself a few questions: Who else will be using the bathroom, particularly children and the elderly; How frequently will you be entering the bathroom; and how the materials can complement your home-style, will help you fine-tune the little changes or select any other elements needed to incorporate into your bathroom. These will make a lot of difference to maximise spaces and your enjoyment of it.

What are some general rules to consider for a good bathroom design? Plan enough space for each fixture and function. For example, plan for a place to dry off when stepping out of the shower. Plan a convenient place, and enough wall space to hang the towels within easy reach of the shower and tub. Think about where things can be stored near the sink. Make sure there is enough space to manoeuvre around the toilet. Think through your daily routine. If you and your partner need to get ready in the morning at the same time, you might want to compartmentalise your bathroom space by separating the vanities and sinks from the bathing area, so that one person could shower while the other is fixing the hair. Think also about where you want to place the toilet to avoid walking further than necessary in the middle of the night. Consider your mechanical and electrical needs. Don’t place shower valves on exterior walls. They are harder to repair if they ever leak. Plan for access to whirlpool tub motors and isolate them for better sound control, if possible. Provide good ventilation for odours and humidity. Factor in the lighting from the beginning. Light for the vanity should come from two directions, if possible. This will allow one light to fill in shadows cast by the other. How do the newest Inspira bathroom elements and accessories fit into a particularly scheme of a modern home today? Plain, simple and less-ornamented bath fixtures are starting to dominate consumer’s choices, in keeping with a burgeoning desire for a more streamlined look, and that is what the Roca Inspira collection is all about. One sentence to sum up the Inspira collection is minimalism at its best, with clean lines and thoughtful restraint, the collection has a broad appeal. The Inspira collection of products, which includes faucets, sinks, vanities, baths and showers are perfect for a minimalist-style bath, thanks to their simple lines and classic materials. Minimalism in bathroom fixtures is expressed through simple architectural forms, geometric shapes, smooth surfaces, sculptural lines and low profiles. Tubs and showers should be visually appealing and a pleasure to use. While wall-mounted, space-saving sinks and streamlined, one-piece toilets add on

to the minimalist appearance. Within the Inspira range, there are sleek faucets and accessories with fluid lines and minimum ornamentation. Faucets and handles are modern in design, straightforward and serve the function it is built for. What bathroom ideas would you give to consumers on designing a new bathroom, shower room or ensuite? If you’ve been thinking about giving your bathroom an overhaul but aren’t sure how, one way to start is to look to the latest design trends for inspiration. For example, consider a standalone shower or a wet room instead of installing a bath that you rarely use. If you prefer a bath and a shower, a walk-in shower for small bath gives you that flexible option. If you have plenty of room space, you can opt for wall storage cupboards instead of installing cabinets on top of the flooring – maybe a built-in storage above the bath or even consider a built-in storage underneath. And if you want to take a relaxing bath after a long day, how about getting a freestanding bath for a luxurious feel, and have scented candles to rejuvenate the body and mind, or even place the magazines nearby for leisure reading.

In addition, here are some of the design trends to consider: Feature Floor Tiles. Statement-making floor tiles proved popular in 2015, and this striking look doesn’t appear to be leaving in a hurry, says interior designer Jasmine McClelland. In smaller bathrooms a feature floor tile adds style without overwhelming the space, and when used in a larger bathroom, the effect is elegant. Natural Beauty. Want a bathing area that’s welcoming and serene? Then drawing design inspiration from nature is a great way to warm a typically very hard room of the house and infuse the space with a calming vibe. It’s one of the key bathroom trends of 2016. An easy way to incorporate this trend into a bathroom design is to introduce earthy materials like natural stone or wood-look tiles. The Master Suite Retreat. Is your master bathroom cramped, not particularly inviting and tucked away out of sight? Try the open-plan bedroom and ensuite design trend when renovating your home. People want bigger bathrooms that are connected to the bedroom or closet, or even more open to the bedroom. People want to see their beautiful basins, custom vanities and freestanding baths from the bedroom. They’re also using bigger sliding doors so people can open up or close off a space. Clever Water Control System. Say goodbye to basic shower and basin faucets, and hello to smart, user-friendly fixtures that give users more control over the flow, mix and temperature of water. Freestanding Bathtubs. According to McClelland, love affair with freestanding baths isn’t over just yet, and not just because they make striking, sculptural design features, but because they help set the mood for rest and relaxation too. The freestanding bath is more than aesthetics – it is emotive. When choosing a freestanding bath, consider how the design of the tub will shape the look of your space. The curve of a bath can bring softness to an angular bathroom, or an angular bath can offset soft colours or add to a highly structured bathroom. Custom Vanities. People want custom vanities to meet their needs, rather than mass-produced ones. The use of a lot of drawers and smart technology, such as doors that lift up and move out of way provide plenty of storage and enhance the illusion of spaciousness. Geometric Tiles. Another major design trend for the bathroom is geometric tiles that make a great design solution for those who wish to add depth and visual interest to a plain, neutral space, but without the use of bright, arresting tones. Bigger Showers. Is bigger better? Yes, according to the current school of thought when it comes to the shower, it is believed the trend will become even more popular in 2017. There’ll be more walk-in showers with oversize panes of glass or solid walls that completely enclose the space, rather than bathrooms with tiny cubicles. Bathrooms that Reflect the Rest of the Home. A design trend that will be big over the coming year and beyond is a move toward bathing zones that are designed in a way to look and feel like an extension of the living room, rather than a traditional bathroom. The bathroom seems like it’s becoming more of a feature of the house and integrating freestanding baths, unconventional fixtures and vanities that resemble furniture are just a few ways to work this trend into your bathroom design.

Together, the events – IFFS/AFS and Nook Asia – will feature a comprehensive range of furniture, furnishing, decorative accessories, interiors and fittings by a diverse portfolio of quality exhibitors, as well as offer an unparalleled outreach and access to the latest technological machinery development to the highly dynamic market, and attract a healthy and well-represented attendance of trade buyers and visitors from the entire furniture ecosystem and value chain. To make it a holistic trade event, the various design initiatives – SingaPlural, Design STARS, International Designer Showcase, Furniture Design Award, and Design Seminars – offer added depth and dimension to this Singapore-anchored trade event, raising its profile as a show not-to-be-missed in the industry calendar.

The themes look at sources of inspiration, and how creating designs that are relevant to the trends of today connects inspiration to trade. The three themes are: Smart Living, Convivial and Design Forward. Smart Living is designing of furniture and spaces that go beyond aesthetics, to challenge the way we see furniture and how it enables people. With a deep understanding of the users, the environment and context, and meaningful incorporation of new technology, design can “think for the users” and empower them to live better. Convivial In the twilight of a society based on data, people increasingly place value on experiences, emotion and interaction. Convivial revolves around how the design of furniture and spaces can help people to fulfil their emotional needs by bringing them together and encouraging interaction and companionship. Design Forward Drawing from trends, design, and principles from outside of furniture and interior design, Design Forward examines sources of inspiration and how to use them as catalysts to drive new ideas and fresh perspectives to create design forward pieces. At IFFS 2017, attendees can expect to see collections presented by a comprehensive portfolio of first-rate exhibitors from all over the world, and to be exposed to more design-centric elements across the show floor. Through various showcases, thematic installations, and more, IFFS’ design-rich environment will inspire greater ideas and encourage more collaboration. In addition, visitors can discover up-and-coming designers and new brands hailing from Singapore and beyond, alongside returning exhibitors and industry veterans. This is aligned with the organiser’s aim to create a carefully-curated boutique show that focuses on the quality of brands on showcase and the content on offer.

“A successful trade event entails more than just providing exhibitors and visitors with a common space to mingle,” said Mr Ernie Koh, Chairman of IFFS Pte Ltd. “With that in mind, and taking into consideration feedback from the industry, we decided that a multi-faceted trade event with a more diverse exhibitor profile and design-rich environment would meet the business and creative needs of attendees at IFFS more adequately.” New Pavilions New for 2017, IFFS welcomes the EU Business Avenues in South East Asia Pavilion to the inaugural Nook Asia event. Organised in partnership with EU Business Avenues in South East Asia – a business support programme for Europe-based SMEs to establish business collaborations through business matchmaking and support services, the pavilion is expected to house 50 design & interior companies from across the European Union (EU) on the Contemporary European Design business mission. European companies are known for their excellent craftsmanship and innovative ideas, and are often recognised as top trendsetters within the global furniture industry. The inclusion of the EU Pavilion is expected to enhance the design quotient at Nook Asia. Also new is the Brand Franchise Pavilion that is devoted to furniture & furnishing franchisors, and caters specially to brands that are exploring international franchise expansion. Yet another new feature area is the Upholstery Pavilion that houses a curated lineup of exhibitors with upholstery offerings. Participating companies include Alexander & James, Asiades, Bellagio Asia, Hugo by Yew Hoong, and NS Furniture.

In addition, IFFS 2017 will see the introduction of a unique experiential zone that is designed to titillate the senses of visitors by providing a visual extravaganza. This feature area will be curated by acclaimed local designer, Nathan Yong, and will bring together a group of exhibitors who will each present their best offerings under a collective theme. A central cafÊ and bar will also be incorporated to the zone to foster closer interactions amongst exhibitors and visitors. IFFS Elite Club For the first time, IFFS will feature Elite Club, an exclusive invitationonly initiative that is designed for key decision makers representing the movers and shakers of the industry. Membership is extended only to a select group of buyers and exhibitors who are carefully evaluated against stringent criteria. Elite Club members will be offered a range of quality benefits and perks befitting this ultimate level of membership, such as access to Elite Club’s Concierge and Lounge, refreshments, complimentary WiFi, and other premium services. More highlights will be announced at a later date. Singapore Expo Convention and Exhibition Centre is the official venue for International Furniture Fair Singapore/ASEAN Furniture Show and NOOK Asia. A top-ranked venue in Asia and the largest purpose-built MICE facility in the lion city, Singapore Expo is simply the best platform for IFFS/AFS to stage its annual show. 18 - 20 October 2016 Singapore EXPO Hall 3 & MAX Atria Singapore

BuildTech Asia 2016 unveils transformation of building and construction sector through technology and Building-IoT The sixth edition of BuildTech Asia 2016, the region’s leading trade show for the building and construction industry, recorded an increased visitor attendance of 35% over the three-day event. Organised by Sphere Exhibits and hosted by the Building and Construction Authority (BCA), the annual trade show was held from 18 to 20 October, inconjunction with the Singapore Construction Productivity Week (SCPW). Over 100 exhibiting brands showcased the latest productive and cutting edge technologies from construction machinery to quality finishes, building and architectural solutions. Robotics and Internet of Things (IoT) technology were also on display alongside 3D concrete printers, immersive Big Data and Virtual Reality applications. Some 7000 visitors from 32 countries had the opportunity to learn about the future of construction with the use of applied technology and building materials.

123

show review|buildtech 2016

Mr Lawrence Wong, Minister for National Development and Second Minister for Finance, graced the opening of the Singapore Construction Productivity Week and BuildTech Asia. He announced that the Singapore government is committed to help firms harness the full potential of Building Information Modelling (BIM) and Virtual Design Construction to improve collaboration and enhance the construction management process. Mr Chua Wee Phong, Chairman of Sphere Exhibits Pte Ltd, said: “The pace of digital transformation in this domain is accelerating across multiple sectors within construction. We are very pleased that BuildTech Asia, in its sixth year, has continued to attract strong interest and support from exhibitors and visitors alike and we hope that the increasing uptake of these technologies will spur the construction industry towards greater productivity.” “BuildTech Asia provides a good learning experience to understand more about the building space and its evolution over the years. We are also happy to note that the trade platform now plays a strong role in bridging knowledge gaps through its’ ancillary conferences and associated trade activities. This is the future of the built environment industry and BuildTech Asia is at the very heart of it.” Thirty-five key technologies under seven R&D clusters were identified to enable the built environment sector to sustain productivity improvements in the long term. These areas include Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DfMA), automated equipment and robotics, infocomm technology, Building Information Modelling (BIM) and Virtual Design and Construction (VDC), 3D printing, advanced construction materials and productive solutions for civil engineering works. Additionally, BCA’s announcement to fund $2 million for four research projects will focus on solutions that drive DfMA in the sector with much on-site construction works shifted to off-site prefabrication and automation in a factory environment as well as improving integration across the construction value chain. Dr John Keung, CEO of BCA, said that the built environment sector needs to constantly develop and harness innovations and new technologies to improve construction productivity and resource efficiencies, given the tightened manpower supply in this sector. This shift in approach will result in better job creation in the sector. Visitors were delighted to see the array of exhibits demonstrating best practices in productivity and sustainability. Alfred Griffioen, founding partner at Alliance Experts, said: “Professionals in this industry do not normally associate cutting edge technology with construction, but it is highly applicable. The exhibition this year included exciting technology elements such as a 3D concrete printer, a crane that doesn’t sway and a booth which, aided by Virtual Reality applications, gave a walk through experience in a project that hasn’t yet been brought to life. I would encourage anyone in this sector to attend BuildTech Asia to get a feel of the current landscape and its emerging trends in the future.” Strengthening knowledge-based platforms for regional exchange As Singapore is in a leadership position as a hub for developing Southeast Asian markets such as Indonesia, India, Malaysia, Thailand and the Philippines, BuildTech Asia plays a facilitation role in knowledge sharing. Some 100 trade delegates were present at site visits to the BCA Skylab, a state-of-the-art rotatable test facility pivotal to developing innovative energy efficient building technologies as well as a construction site for a residential estate comprising of nine blocks of 22 storey buildings. This site is the

first in Singapore to implement the use of productive technologies such as Prefabricated Volumetric Construction (PVC) modules for three blocks, conventional 2-D precast panels for the remaining six blocks and the use of Prefabricated Bathroom Units (PBUs) for all units. The project is based on first generation (Concrete PVC) proposal using columns, beams and slabs.

PIA 2016 is an industry-led initiative designed to raise productivity in the construction sector through a ground-up approach for innovative ideas that aims to generate significant improvements at the workplace. Three winners were announced at the Environmental Sustainability Conference, held on 20 October, in conjunction with BuildTech Asia.

Property developers are creating customer-centric one-to-one (O2O) experience through sensor technology, Internet of Things, cloud, RFID technology, social media and data analytics to develop touchpoints with consumers. The inaugural Building Internet of Things Asia (B-IoT Asia) Conference, by a panel of well-respected speakers from the region, demonstrated how such knowledge and technology can be applied and how buildings can be constructed to cater for evolving technology requirements. Delegates engaged in deep discussions on how to apply technologies like Big Data and Internet of Things to the building and construction sector.

The Environment Sustainability Conference educated delegates on how to think, build and operate ‘Green’. Speakers showed building information modelling (BIM) that can pave the way to creating a building sustainably; how machine-based learning contributes to energy management; and how to design with a view to achieving Green Mark 2015 certification. The Conference also discussed how acting sustainably while constructing a building was as important as creating a building that is inherently sustainable. Forging productive practices in innovative construction from ground up Innovation and technology have strong impact on a company’s productivity. The inaugural SCAL Productivity and Innovation Awards (PIA) 2016 which took place at BuildTech Asia saw some 1000 visitors cast their votes on 10 finalists for the coveted Productivity & Innovation Awards by Singapore Construction Association Limited (SCAL).

All winning organisations acknowledged the significance of this award in encouraging the industry to strive towards innovative work processes through a ground-up approach. Ariola Ruel Penaflor, Head, Lian Soon Construction Pte Ltd, who clinched the gold award, said: “The Productivity & Innovation Award (PIA) is an excellent platform for construction companies to come together and showcase their latest innovations and developments. Winning the gold brings us one step closer to commercialising our drain system and we hope to see the industry benefitting from this recyclable and reusable model. The iDrain will be a game-changer, by reducing wastage and manpower with its extreme sustainability. This award has given companies like us various opportunities to create impactful changes in the building scene from our small ideas.” Mr Kenneth Loo, President of Singapore Construction Limited (SCAL), said: “We are happy to note that the inaugural PIA Awards kicked off to a good start in our efforts to drive productivity and innovation to a different level in the built environment sector. The award has provided professionals with something to look at and something to move forward with in practice. It recognises these efforts as important and integral to build a productive culture

from the grounds up, allowing practitioners greater involvement in their efforts to increase productivity and innovative solutions. BuildTech Asia provides the ideal platform to showcase and broadcast these ideas and prototypes within the industry, in line with government collaborations in this sector. SCAL will be happy to explore continued involvement as we strive to grow and develop the awards with a common vision towards driving productivity and innovation.” Forging partnerships and collaborations in SMART construction Besides exploring the latest technologies and materials, delegates and exhibitors fostered new business relationships as well as commercial partnerships at BuildTech Asia. The trade exhibition was well received as it generated qualified leads for the exhibitors and much needed awareness for vendors in an industry that may otherwise not offer a lot of visibility. Visitors saw a wide range of new innovations that could help them gain construction productivity and reduce manpower expenses at the Public Sector Co-ordinated Pavilion, amongst exhibiting country pavilions and exhibiting companies. Five government agencies - LTA, HDB, IMDA, HDB and NTU, showcased cutting edge and future technologies which were used within their respective organisations. BuildTech Asia 2016 also provided a conducive springboard for exhibiting companies to launch new products, services and technologies into the local and international market. Various industry players announced new initiatives and partnerships aimed at elevating construction productivity in Singapore and the region: • Bointec, a Taiwanese company, launched their latest IoT product, HC818K, aims to launch it in the Southeast Asian (SEA) market. • In its second return to BuildTech Asia, FINALCAD announced a USD20m funding to help expand its suite of services in SEA. This new round of funding aims to assist the development of new technology such as object recognition, predictive analytics and augmented reality and complements their existing mobile apps in BIM for the field. • Korean company, Two Cap, launched a patented dual cap protector for the first time in Singapore and around the region. This product meets the standards of most countries in Asia and Europe. BuildTech Asia will return to the Singapore Expo in October 2017. Premium spaces are now available. Organisations which are keen to exhibit at BuildTech Asia 2017 are welcome to reserve their spaces early. 126
