A bit about Eskimo At Eskimo, our grand plan is to design and make the world’s best radiators and associated hot things. In these pages you’ll see some of the fruits of our labour at the drawing board and on the test rig, relentlessly knocking on the gates of radiator heaven. If we have one underlying principle at Eskimo it’s this - we want to be proud of what we design, make and sell. For our radiator products this means that we want you to look at Eskimo ranges and be blown away by their gorgeous simple elegant lines. But we also want your installer (or you if you’re a handy sort) to find the job of installation straightforward and well explained. We want you, our customer, to be warmed by your Eskimo throughout the coldest of winters, and smile at it in the summer sunshine. We want you to forget about it when you go on holiday, then fondly remember you own it when you come home. Most of all we would like to think that when you sell your house and move on, whoever moves in will feel the same about the radiators they inherit. For that, we believe, is the measure of good product design. It’s not fashion (and we’re not knocking fashion), it’s not art, but it is something that can be appreciated by anybody at any time, because it quite simply works: aesthetically and practically. Of course the real trick is to do this without coming up with some personality devoid piece of inoffensive sameness. Do we manage it? Only time will tell, and that’s what keeps us so excited by what we do. Eskimo continues to develop engaging, beautifully engineered products with a sense of humour, captivating design minded consumers and professionals within the industry alike. And every Eskimo product is designed and manufactured in the UK – who else can say that these days?

Eskimo’s towel rails are different. The towel rail on the front has a separate function to the radiator at the back – one warms your towels, the other heats your room Eskimo’s range of elliptical aluminium towel rail radiators The problem with fitting most towel rails to heat your bathroom or kitchen is that they only provide their full heat output so long as you don’t hang towels on them. Hanging a towel over the bars of a towel rail is like putting a tea cosy on a tea pot – it keeps the heat in, meaning a cold bathroom. Eskimo’s stationery inspired towel warmer

The electric Towelclip The paperclip deserves respect and admiration for its role in holding things together in the office and in our opinion it’s far superior to the staple. Indeed we love it so much we came up with a giant version that not only looks every bit as good as a paperclip (is there any greater accolade?) AND it also warms towels! Towelclip boasts low energy usage and is available in chrome. Towelclip won’t heat your bathroom though: its sole function (other than looking brilliant) is to warm towels, pants or anything else you hang on it. What that does mean is that you can leave it on all year round and it won’t make you sweat.

Eskimo’s Ron range can also stand on its own two (or three or four) feet Recognising that many installation situations require a floor mounted rather than a wall mounted radiator, we at Eskimo have released this version of our best selling Ron radiator.

Three metal finishes plus a range of standard colours

As a design, Ron, among modern radiators, is uniquely suited to floor mounting due to the fact that it is completely symmetrical without any superfluous parts at the back of the radiator to spoil the clean lines. It therefore lends itself to installation in any setting where both sides of the radiator are on show, such as in conservatories, or in shop or office windows.

Perfect for mounting in front of full length windows

Great for mounting under benches and seating, for warm winter bottoms

Ideal for rooms where sloping or curved walls prevent the use of wall mounted radiators An excellent way of avoiding damage to delicate wall coverings: from hanging radiators on expensive wallpapers, oak panelling in listed buildings or high skirting boards in period homes

Available in a range of three standard heights: 200mm, 400mm and 600mm

Anti-mist High heat outputs Low water volume and diverter fitted as standard means rapid warm up and perfect for low temperature heating systems such as heat pumps Available in electric and hot water versions Hidden valves can be specified so that the mirror panel appears to “float” just off the wall with the radiator function disguised. This will require the radiator front panel to be extended by 100mm – so you will need to add 100mm to the height of the radiator shown in the brochure Twin function with optional factory fitted towel rails added: acts as a high performance radiator and towel warmer. The matching flat bar towel rail is aesthetically and proportionately matched to the radiator *There may be some distortion in the panel, particularly around the edges. It won’t therefore compete with a glass mirror for absolute perfection, but assuming you’re perfect to start with, we bet you could do with a couple of extra curves?

Colours, finishes and taking care of your Eskimo Eskimo radiators are available in a huge range of finishes. Since our aim is to manufacture the world’s most beautiful radiators, our quality of finish is everything: so here are more details on the finishes we produce and how we achieve the standards upon which our reputation was built

Metal finishes Brushed stainless steel We use brushed stainless steel for our Outline radiator panels. The brushing is carried out on a grade which is compatible with most brushed stainless used in kitchens. It is also perfect for producing a sleek, industrial feel to an interior scheme. Super Mirror stainless steel For our mirror finish radiators, Eskimo exclusively uses Super Mirror stainless steel from Rimex Metals. Rimex’s Super Mirror is as near a perfect polish that can be produced on stainless steel and has a perfect reflective quality. Unlike a glass mirror, Super Mirror can be used in food preparation, ceiling and high traffic areas because it will not shatter. There really is no other mirror stainless like it. However, as it is a sheet product, unlike a glass mirror there may be some distortion in the panel, particularly around the edges. It won’t therefore compete with a glass mirror for absolute perfection, but assuming you’re perfect to start with, we bet you could do with a couple of extra curves?

30

Polished Aluminium Our Ron radiator sections are all polished in-house. Polishing a product of this scale and shape is a highly skilled job which involves running each Ron section by hand over a series of increasingly finer abrasive polishing wheels, ultimately seeking to take out practically all visible blemishes and marks. Eskimo’s polished finish is second to none. Matt aluminium The matt aluminium finish applied to our Ron radiator range is an anodised finish. Firstly each Ron section is polished as described above, then chemically etched and finally anodised to give a matt appearance that is durable and sleek. This entire process is carried out in our in-house anodising facility. Gold This an alternative anodised finish, again conducted entirely in-house. The gold colour is achieved through the use of a dye applied as part of the anodising process. This gives a slightly translucent lustre that will only be achieved with a true metallic product and cannot be matched by any painting process.

Caring for metal finishes All of these metal finishes are pretty hard wearing, but all of them will benefit from an occasional clean with nothing more than soapy water. To remove any streaks or stains from our polished finishes we can supply specialist cleaning cloths – please contact our sales department. Brushed stainless steel radiators also benefit from the application of a little baby oil to prevent finger marking. Apply this with a lint free cloth. If your radiator is inadvertently scratched in service we do have tips on how minor scratches can be removed depending upon the finish. However it’s best to call our technical department for a discussion on the best products and methods to use before attempting a repair.

Colours All coloured finishes are applied in-house at our own powder coating facility. Other manufacturer’s radiators are usually wet sprayed with liquid paint - this doesn’t offer anything like the same durability or thickness of coating that powder coating achieves. Powder coating is a polymer coating that is applied as a dry powder and then cured at high temperature to form a hard finish that is much tougher than conventional paint. Powder coating also has the advantage that it emits zero or near zero volatile organic compounds (VOCs which can be harmful to health) – particularly important when a product is going to be heated in the home. All radiator parts that we powder coat are pre-treated to improve adhesion and corrosion resistance, meaning many, many years of trouble free service. Our facility is accredited by the world’s leading powder suppliers to ensure the optimum product quality is consistently achieved.

Any powder coating is, however, only as good as the powder used, so Eskimo specify powders from IGP Pulvertechnik AG. In our opinion Swiss manufacturers IGP produce the best powders on the market, most commonly used in demanding exterior applications. IGP have also developed an innovative easy-clean technology called IGP-DURA®clean. IGP-DURA®clean coatings possess a hydrophobic surface. Particles of dirt cannot easily adhere to the surface of the coating and are beaded away by water. As this is applied as part of the coating, the effect is permanent. This dirt repellence means less frequent and much easier cleaning. It also provides a coating that will withstand repeated cleaning better – all you need is the occasional sponge and soapy water. Eskimo are the only radiator manufacturers to use IGP-DURA®clean powders.

Eskimo have selected a range of standard colours that we hold in stock, and which are included in the standard price list. All other RAL colours are available as well as colours from other classification systems – we also offer a colour matching service. Prices for non standard colours and colour matching are available on application.

Frequently Asked Questions

Non standard connection positions Both Outline and Ron radiators can be specified with alternative connection positions at additional cost – please contact the Eskimo sales department for details. See www.eskimodesign.co.uk for contact details.

Installation steps after fixing brackets to the wall and installing pipework and leaving stub pipes projecting from wall with a 90º angle pointing horizontally outwards towards the sides of the radiator as shown on the drawing:

Outline radiators: hidden valve installation details

1. With the radiator off the wall fit ½” BSP to ½” BSPT brass adaptors to radiator taper (BSPT) ends into the radiator using PTFE tape and/or a suitable thread sealant. Tighten.

With Outline radiators it is possible to have completely hidden manual valves. This is an optional extra that must be specified at the time of ordering. It is not possible to fit thermostatic valves with this option, so if thermostatic control is required this must be installed separately, either via a dedicated room thermostat or via remotely sited thermostatic valves. Discuss the options with your installer and/or call the Eskimo technical department for advice. See www.eskimodesign.co.uk for contact details.

2. Fit flexible hoses (end with rubber seal) to ½” BSP male brass adaptor end now projecting from radiator after step 1. Tighten. 3. Move radiator close enough to wall to allow flexible hose end to reach stub pipe. 4. Fit compression end to 15mm stub pipes projecting from wall ideally with valve facing downwards so that valve can be operated from underneath radiator.

With this option the radiator front panel will be extended by 100mm in height in order to hide the valves and flexible hoses included with the radiator, and this should be accounted for when working out radiator size selection. Installation details are shown on fig. 1 to assist with planning – this is not intended to provide a precise specification of pipe positions but as guidance only to help you decide if hidden valves are possible in your installation.

fig. 1

5. Provided the radiator is to be installed far enough off the floor so that the valve can be accessed with a flat head screwdriver from underneath, the radiator can now be mounted on the wall, filled, vented and balanced in accordance with installation instructions. 6. If the radiator is to be mounted too close to the floor to allow access to the valves with a screwdriver the radiator will need to be filled, vented and balanced via the valves prior to being lifted onto the brackets (Option 5 is very much preferable). At no stage during the installation process should the flexible hoses be put under strain, crushed or bent through an angle tight enough to cause the hose to collapse, as this could cause damage to the hoses or associated pipework.

Q. How do I choose the size of my radiator? A. Firstly, ask your plumber to calculate the heat requirement of the room(s) in question or follow the steps in our heat requirement calculator on our website (we can also email you this as a spreadsheet). Then decide whereabouts you want the radiator and what shape it ought to be. Then look through the price lists to see what options you have in terms of size and finish – we also have a further 300 standard sizes, 6 standard finishes and an infinite variety of special sizes and finishes. You’ll find masses of options, so please call Eskimo if you’d like assistance. Q. Are Eskimo radiators compatible with my existing heating system? A. Yes, Eskimo radiators are designed for use with any central heating system, in any combination of shapes or sizes, and with anybody else’s radiators installed in other parts of the system. The connections are British Standard Pipe connections, which despite the name, are used on all radiators throughout Europe. Eskimo radiators have been used in locations as diverse as New York, Casablanca, Little Snoring and Irkutsk in Siberia. As for our electric radiators – again they are compatible with all systems throughout Europe and we can also supply 120v 60hz versions for use in North America. Q. Should I change all of my radiators at once or can I do them one at a time? A. Whichever suits your site best – Eskimo radiators will work happily as a single feature radiator or as the

only style of radiator throughout a site. If one radiator only is changed, then the system might require balancing to ensure an equal flow of water to each radiator, but your plumber will do this. If you are installing yourself then see the technical help page on balancing found on our website. Q. Should I keep the radiators in the current position or can I move them somewhere else in the room? A. You can move them anywhere you like, but consider these points: if you keep the radiator in the current position it will reduce installation costs. Eskimo are the only company who offer radiators tailor made to the nearest millimetre – if you give us your current pipe measurements (centre to centre) we will make a radiator that matches those precisely, reducing installation costs hugely. If you have a traditional property with single glazing then fitting the radiators under the windows makes sense, as the cold air dropping from the window is heated by the radiator, cancelling out cold draughts. If you have a modern building or good double glazing, then you can site the radiator in any position and in whatever format (long and low, tall and narrow etc) you fancy. Q. Is there anywhere I shouldn’t put a radiator? A. Absolutely, but in terms of installation in a room, think about the movement of air through the radiator. All Eskimo radiators require air to move freely into (from underneath) and out of (above) the radiator. In practice this means that you should allow 100mm above

and 100mm below the radiator without any obstructions such as skirting, shelves etc if you want to achieve full performance. If mounting the radiator in a purpose built alcove allow 100mm above and below the radiator, while the sides can be within about 25mm of the alcove wall provided the effects of heat are considered in the construction. Q. How long will my radiator take to make? A. All Eskimo radiators are made to order at our factory in Birmingham, UK, and the maximum lead time is 6 weeks, order to delivery. Q. Is there anything I can do to speed the process up? A. Yes, you can have all the pipework and valves installed, flooring laid, decoration finished etc. Then, when the radiator is ready, it’s just a case of mounting it on the wall and connecting the valves to the radiator. Pipe connection positions are available on the relevant installation instructions on our website, or from Eskimo direct. We’ve done this for hundreds of installations and it’s easy. Q. Are Eskimo radiators efficient? A. Yes, Eskimo radiators have uniquely high heat outputs for a given size of radiator – they therefore use less material to deliver the same power. However, they will cost the same amount to run as any other radiator, as all a radiator does is replaces the heat lost through the fabric of the building – it can’t make that building lose any less heat. So the running cost is a feature of how well insulated the building is (how much heat it loses) not how much heat the radiator gives out. 35

Delta T

Delta T (Δt ) is the difference between the desired ambient air temperature in the room (if in doubt use 20ºC) and the mean water temperature in the radiator. To calculate the mean water temperature in the radiator, add the water temperature at the inlet to the radiator to the water temperature at the outlet from the radiator and divide by 2. As an example: You wish to have an ambient air temperature of 21ºC in your bathroom. The water coming in to the radiator is at 50ºC, by the time it’s passed through the radiator it is down to 42ºC. The mean water temperature is therefore (50+42)/2 = 46ºC. To calculate the Delta T, subtract 21 from 46; the Delta T is therefore 25ºC. Delta Ts of 60ºC and 50ºC are shown in the price lists. If your Delta T is not 60ºC or 50ºC then you will need to apply a correction factor to the heat outputs shown in the price lists - see the list of correction factors alongside.
