TEACH
YOUR FUTURE
Why teach? Teaching is never just a job. It's a responsibility and an opportunity to have a positive impact on a whole generation. Big picture or small details, here are seven reasons you should choose teaching.
Make a real difference
Every child wants to learn. And every child has a mind brimming with curiosity. Be the one to unlock their potential and give your students the chance to shine. We all remember the teachers who changed our lives – the ones who believed in us and showed us new ways to understand and interact with the world. You could be that person. Be rewarded
The intellectual and emotional rewards that come from teaching are incalculable. But the tangible ones are important, too. Starting salaries are very good, with plenty of opportunity for career progression, and additional money if you take on more responsibilities. There’s also the security of knowing you have a generous Teacher’s Pension Scheme. Finally, there are the holidays. Essential for recharging, they enable a great work-life balance – and if you’re a parent yourself, they give you the time to spend with your own family.
Develop your skills
Great teachers always look at the bigger picture. They equip their students with the skills to forge bright futures – and encourage them to pursue their passions. But success stories aren’t limited to your students alone. With structured career progression, you can pursue your own longterm teaching goals – whether they’re rooted in the classroom, in a management role, or caring for students in a pastoral environment. Through our School of Education, you can build on your knowledge, to Master's level and beyond. Access funding
The world needs more exceptional and inspiring teachers, from all walks of life. If you’re worried about the money needed for teacher training, there are funding options available, including tax-free bursaries of up to £26,000 depending on your chosen subject. In addition, when you train to teach at Bath Spa, you’ll receive our unique £500 Thank You scholarship.
Channel your creativity
From new technology to fresh ideas and global developments, teaching never stands still. As well as channelling the latest thinking, you’ll be encouraged throughout your career to try new approaches and push yourself to new creative heights. And of course, you’ll be working with the most creative people of all – children! Embrace change
When you’re a teacher, no two days are the same. You’ll be continually surprised, delighted, challenged and fulfilled. And, regardless of the school you’re working in or the age of your students, you’ll realise that, in teaching, ‘the daily grind’ simply doesn’t exist.
2
Never stop learning
Being a teacher is about so much more than sharing your knowledge. You can ignite ambition in your students and give them the confidence to thrive. And it works two ways. Youth has an uncanny way of subverting age and you might just find that your students teach you a thing or two: about life, the world, and most importantly, about yourself.

Inspiring teacher educators
You’ll be taught and supported throughout your year by our team of talented teacher educators, both in school and university. They’re passionate and engaging, down-to-earth and supportive – and many of them are actively engaged in research and scholarship. This means they bring the most up-to-date (and often cutting-edge) academic expertise, as well as new and exciting approaches, to their teaching.
While many candidates join us direct from university, people are increasingly choosing teaching as a second career, bringing valuable knowledge and experience from the workplace. It’s this mix of backgrounds, cultures, nationalities and experiences that makes our course so vibrant and enriching. An extra ‘thank you’
From day one, you’ll be having a positive impact on the lives of young people. So, to help you get started – and as an extra thank you for making a difference – we’re giving you a £500 scholarship to support you during your studies.

BATH
Study in Bath Bath could be the perfect city. It’s a creative, vibrant place, just moments from rolling countryside. It’s exciting, on-the-go, and energetic, yet safe and easy to get to know. No wonder so many people love it here – and so many students stay.
More than a UNESCO World Heritage Site Bath is one of the world’s most historic cities. Home to famous sites such as the Roman Baths, the Royal Crescent, Bath Abbey and Pulteney Bridge, it’s both beautiful to look at and fascinating to explore. But look closer – there’s much more to it than the tourist magnets. By day and by night Alongside golden-stone Georgian buildings and fine parks, you’ll find cosy pubs, cool cafés and independent shops. Trendsetting restaurants jostle for position with quaint tea rooms. As for nightlife? Cocktail bars, nightclubs, cinemas, and the famous Theatre Royal mean there’s always something happening. With regular sessions at bars and clubs, there’s no shortage of live comedy or music either. And if you fancy a change of scene, Bristol – with its art galleries, music venues and bold street art – is just a 15-minute train ride away.
Festivals and sports This is a city known and loved for festivals and the arts. From Shakespeare to Jane Austen, children’s literature to avant-garde film – not to mention nearby Glastonbury – there’s something to suit every interest. Bath is also famous for its sports culture. With a world-class rugby team, Bath City Football Club and Bath Races to its name, it’s a place that’s never short on adrenaline. A creative hub Perhaps there’s something in the air (or maybe the waters) but Bath is renowned for attracting world-class creative talents. The city is a hotbed of inventors, entrepreneurs, artisans and independent thinkers. And the South West is renowned as the home to cutting-edge creatives – from Aardman to Banksy, Dyson to Clarks.

1 Bath Spa PGCE with QTS This is a one-year, full-time Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). Run through our Teacher Education Partnership, we ensure that you spend as much time as possible in the classroom developing your skills and teaching practice. Alongside your school training, you will undertake academic assignments relating to your professional practice on different aspects of children and young people’s development, learning and progress. Your university training will include seminars, workshops and lectures to inform and enhance your professional practice. How am I assessed? For all PGCE programmes, you’ll take part in a continuous process of assessment. This is to make sure that you’re on track to achieve your PGCE with QTS, but it’s also to ensure that you’re confident, feel supported and have clear goals to work towards. You’ll be observed in the classroom against the Teachers’ Standards and you will get detailed feedback on every academic assignment. We’ll also ensure you put together enough evidence from your time in the classroom and your academic achievements to ensure you gain your PGCE with QTS.
16
We offer PGCE programmes in: Early Years Initial Teacher Training [EYITT] This is a specialist employment-based course for those already working, or who want to work with children from birth to five years old. This is the only ITT training route that has a focus on the birth to three years old age range. On this course, you will gain Early Years Teacher Status (EYTS) and a PGCE in Early Years. You’ll become a specialist in early childhood and gain crucial understanding of how young children develop and learn. You’ll also learn how to lead and manage early years settings, make a lasting and positive impact on children’s well-being, and set yourself up for a diverse and exciting career. See page 25 for more details.
PGCE Primary and Early Years As a primary teacher, you’ll take children on their first journey through formal education and have a lasting impact on how they understand the world. Choose to teach from the following training age-phases: 3 – 7 age range 5 – 11 age range 7 – 11 age range We also have a number of Bath Spa specialisms in Primary and Early Years: – English – Maths – Modern Languages – Science – the arts – P.E. – Music – IT – Behaviour for Learning – S pecial Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEN/D). See page 26 for more details.
PGCE Secondary If you have one subject you’re passionate about – literature, physics, the arts or maths, to name a few – then secondary teaching allows you to immerse yourself in the subject. It’s an opportunity to enthuse and inspire your students and make a real difference to their lives as they become young adults. The following secondary PGCE subjects are on offer at Bath Spa: Art & Design, Business Studies, Computing, Design & Technology, Drama, English, Geography, History, Maths, Modern Languages, Music, P.E., P.E. with an EBacc subject, RE, Biology, Chemistry and Physics. See page 29 for more details. What if I don’t have the right degree for my chosen secondary pathway in teaching? Don't worry, you can take a Subject Knowledge Enhancement (SKE) course. These are perfect for graduates who are interested in teaching a particular subject at secondary level but who don’t have a degree in that subject. These take place before the teacher training programme starts. Each course is designed to help you spot any gaps and top up your subject knowledge so that you’re fully prepared for your programme of choice.
Assessment Only If you’re an experienced unqualified teacher with two or more years of teaching experience, you can be recommended for QTS through Bath Spa University’s Assessment Only pathway. You can do this while working in a school and you should already be meeting the Teachers’ Standards when you apply. There is no training provided with the Assessment Only pathway. You’ll undergo an assessment period (lasting a maximum of 12 weeks). During this time, a mentor from your school will monitor your progress and meet with you regularly, and a Bath Spa University assessor will come in to observe you on three occasions. You’ll be expected to put together a folder of evidence to show that you’re meeting the Teachers’ Standards. The assessment period will finish with a final tutorial before you’re recommended for QTS. assessmentonly@bathspa.ac.uk www.bathspa.ac.uk/assessment-only
2 School Direct PGCE with QTS This pathway enables you to train within one of the School Direct partnership schools. You’ll gain a PGCE with QTS at the end of the one-year, full-time programme. Each School Direct Partnership offers a training programme bespoke to their partnership. You’ll also train at the university and undertake academic assignments that relate to your professional practice. At Bath Spa, we offer School Direct training at both primary and secondary level. For further details of the schools that we will partner with during 2020/21, please visit our website. www.bathspa.ac.uk/school-direct
3 Teach First (South West) This pathway is run through our partnership with Teach First (South West). Teach First is an educational charity that focuses on preparing trainees to become outstanding teachers and leaders in schools in low income areas. If you choose to follow the Teach First pathway, you’ll train in schools facing the greatest challenges in the region’s socioeconomically deprived areas. Your training will also be employmentbased, so you’ll get paid a salary by your school. This is a two-year teacher training and leadership programme. During the first year, you’ll work towards being recommended for QTS. In year two you’ll focus on completing your NQT year. Throughout both years, you’ll have the chance to gain a Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) with QTS. This holds twice as many Master's credits as a PGCE. Bath Spa is the leading university provider for primary and secondary Teach First programmes in the South West. If you’re interested in Teach First, and want more information on recruitment, selection, training and employment, take a look at both the Bath Spa and the Teach First website. www.bathspa.ac.uk/teach-first http://graduates.teachfirst.org.uk

APPLICATIONS We’re looking for applicants who are suited personally and academically to a career in teaching, and who can demonstrate a real passion for their subject and enthusiasm for working with young people.
ACADEMIC ENTRY REQUIREMENTS There are some basic eligibility requirements you’ll need to meet to become a qualified teacher in England. A summary can be found in the table on page 20. Undergraduate degree You need to have completed, or be in the final year of, a UK degree (or an equivalent qualification). For most PGCE programmes you need to have achieved a second class honours degree at 2.2 or above. – Primary – your degree can be in any subject. For the primary programmes with a subject specialism, you’re expected to demonstrate a good understanding of this particular subject. This could be through having a degree in the subject, or having taken credits or modules in the subject as part of your wider degree. If you hold an A-level in the subject, you’re still welcome to apply – we’ll certainly consider your application. You’ll also be expected to show a strong interest in children’s learning in this particular area. – Secondary – your degree normally needs to be in the subject you are applying to teach. If your degree isn’t fully relevant to the subject, you may be offered a place on the condition that you complete a Subject Knowledge Enhancement (SKE) course. These courses run in the year before the PGCE programme starts and vary in length depending on the level of subject knowledge needed. If you’d like to be considered for one of these courses, you should receive a referral from your PGCE-awarding institution and submit an application to the SKEC Administrator at skeadmin@bathspa.ac.uk
GCSEs – Primary – you will need need three GCSE passes at grade C / 4 or above (or recognised equivalents) including English Language, Mathematics and a Science subject. – Secondary – you will need two GCSE passes at grade C / 4 or above (or recognised equivalents) including English Language and Mathematics. If you don’t have the required GCSE qualifications, we’ll accept equivalency tests from www.equivalencytesting.com for all PGCE programmes. International applicants If you’re applying with qualifications from outside the European Economic Area (EEA), contact the National Academic Recognition Information Centre (NARIC). They’ll be able to give you advice on how your qualifications relate to the entry requirements, and may be able to provide certification where appropriate. www.naric.org.uk If English isn’t your first language, you may offer IELTS 7.0 (with a minimum of 6.0 in each component) as an equivalent to GCSE English language.
Applying to Bath Spa 18
NON-ACADEMIC ENTRY REQUIREMENTS All applicants are subject to a number of non-academic entry requirements: – Fitness to Teach check to ensure you are medically fit to take a teacher training course. – Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks – this government scheme identifies people who are barred from working with children and vulnerable adults. For more information visit www.gov.uk/ disclosure-barring-service-check. – Declaration of criminal convictions – if you have a criminal record it won’t necessarily prevent you from becoming a teacher. You’ll need to disclose any criminal convictions and agree to an enhanced criminal record check. – Information and Communications Technology (ICT) skills – you’ll be given the necessary teaching and support to make sure you have the ICT skills needed to be a successful newly qualified teacher (NQT). However, we expect a degree of ICT competence before you start the programme. – Classroom experience – it’s a good idea to try and get classroom experience in a UK school before you start your training. This typically involves observing teaching and learning and helping out in the classroom. If you have other examples of working with children and young people, we’d suggest highlighting this in your application. You should explain what you’ve gained from your experiences and how this relates to your desire to become a teacher.
HOW TO APPLY Applications for Bath Spa and School Direct PGCE programmes are made through UCAS Teacher Training. There can be a lot of competition for places on each programme, so you should apply as early as possible to give yourself the best chance of getting a place. There are two ways in which you can make your application: – Apply 1: You’re able to apply for up to three training programmes, including both primary and secondary. You have to apply for these at the same time and can’t add to them at a later date. You don’t have to use all three choices and there’s no restriction to your choices – you can choose from any route, subject or age group. Universities have 40 working days to provide applicants with a decision. – Apply 2: You can only use Apply 2 if you didn’t get a place in Apply 1. This could be because your application was unsuccessful or you chose not to accept an offer or interview. In Apply 2 you can make an unlimited number of applications, one at a time.
Interviews If your application is selected, you’ll be interviewed before you can be offered a place. It’s the best way for us to assess your suitability to teach and identify your personal training needs. For you, it’s the opportunity to show us your enthusiasm, your individual qualities and any relevant experiences you’ve had, and why you should be selected for our PGCE course. Interviews are held throughout the year from November. Primary interviews are conducted in groups. Secondary interviews are made up of mixed subject group tasks, subject presentations and one-to-one interviews with the Academic Tutor in your subject and a partnership mentor. You’ll be expected to carry out tasks in preparation for and during your interview. The interviewers will be a selection of university tutors and school teachers.
School Direct The recruitment and selection of trainees to School Direct programmes is primarily the responsibility of the cluster of schools to which you are applying. If you’re interested in this route, make your application to the Lead School of the cluster via UCAS Teacher Training. When making your application, make sure you’ve read the programme information provided by the Lead School and show that you’ve taken this into account when you write your personal statement. Bath Spa University works with schools to assess the suitability of candidates for the programme.
Teach First If you’d like to register your interest and apply for this route, visit the Teach First website: www.teachfirst.org.uk Assessment Only Applications for the Assessment Only route to QTS are made directly to the University. For more information and the application form, go to: www.bathspa.ac.uk/assessment-only Equal opportunities If you’re a mature student and you’re interested in a career in teaching, we’d strongly encourage you to apply. We also strongly encourage applications from groups who are underrepresented in teaching, namely those of black or ethnic minority heritage, and people with a disability. Male teachers are in short supply, particularly in Primary schools and Early Years settings. We also support applications from people who’ve just finished an undergraduate or higher degree.
When you’re ready to submit your application, you’ll need to pay a nominal £1 fee to UCAS Teacher Training. Once UCAS has processed your application, you’ll be able to follow its progress and reply to offers online using their Track service.

Getting extra help – If you have a disability, long-term health condition, mental health condition or specific learning difficulty (e.g. dyslexia), you may be able to get extra help through Disabled Students’ Allowances (DSAs). – If you have children, or there’s an adult who depends on you financially, there may be extra help available – for example, through the Childcare Grant, Parents’ Learning Allowance, Adult Dependants’ Grant and Child Tax Credit.
Early Years Initial Teacher Training The DfE will provide funding of £14,000, which covers course fees of up to £7,000. The remaining £7,000 is a contribution to the costs incurred by your employer – for example, supply cover or salary enhancement. As an early years teacher, you’ll have a huge impact on children’s wellbeing and development. From taking their first steps to saying their first word, this is an inspiring and rewarding age; a time when you’ll see amazing changes taking place every day. Early Years Initial Teacher Training (EYITT) is the only teacher training programme specifically focused on babies and children from birth to five years old. This qualification will help you develop your professional skills and knowledge so you can lead practice and support the progress of young children. Throughout the programme, you’ll be supported to reflect on your learning and development and you’ll set targets to ensure you are developing into a creative and caring teacher. Once you’ve completed your EYITT, you’ll receive your PGCE and the recommendation of Early Years Teacher Status (EYTS). You could then be employed in all kinds of settings, bringing your specialist knowledge, skills and experience to help children thrive. PROGRAMME STRUCTURE AND CONTENT We offer a Graduate Employmentbased pathway. our training fees of up to £7,000 Y will be paid
The majority of your training will take place in your work environment, although the programme does require some placements in other settings. During your school / setting training you’ll be supported by a mentor, and also assigned a university-based academic tutor. Both your tutor and mentor will work with you to monitor your progress, as well as offer you support, advice and opportunities to reflect on and improve your performance as an Early Years Teacher. ASSESSMENT To achieve EYTS, you’ll need to undertake a range of work-based tasks and assessments which explore your knowledge and understanding of theories and practices relating to teaching and learning. You’ll need to demonstrate your understanding and skills in planning, teaching, assessing and evaluating children’s learning. All assessments will need to demonstrate that you have met the Teachers’ Standards (Early Years). For more information on these, visit: www.gov.uk/government/ publications/early-years-teachersstandards To achieve your PGCE in Early Years, you’ll need to submit three academic assignments focusing on aspects of young children’s development, learning and care. The PGCE will give you 60 credits at Master’s level. These can be used towards further study on one of our education Master’s programmes.
YOUR FUTURE CAREER There are a huge variety of opportunities for early years teachers. You could co-ordinate a multi-professional team in a children’s centre or work directly in children’s services. You could choose to specialise in Special Educational Needs or continue academic study at Master’s level. There are also plenty of opportunities to work in early years settings abroad. Early years teachers can work in all private, voluntary and independent (PVI) early years settings, as well as free schools, academies and independent schools. You’ll also be able to work in maintained settings, but only individuals who meet the legal definition of a school teacher can lead teaching in a maintained nursery school or class. To do this, you’ll need to hold Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or a suitable international teaching qualification as defined by NARIC.
KATHERINE MILLER EYITT GRADUATE — “As a parent, I was inspired by the experience my children had at their pre-school and decided it would be a perfect second career for me. I was particularly interested in how children learn before they start school and, after attending an information evening at Bath Spa, I decided the graduate employment route was right for me. It’s a very busy year which required excellent organisational skills and a rapid adjustment to the academic expectations. I’ve learned lots of new skills on the course and particularly enjoyed visiting other early years settings. I volunteered at two pre-schools for the year preceding the course and I’d recommend getting some experience before applying as it really helps to have an idea of what working in early years involves.”

PROGRAMME STRUCTURE AND CONTENT This one-year PGCE with QTS programme blends University-based learning with school-based teaching – you’ll spend at least 120 days in a school/educational setting. You can follow one of three programmes: 3-7 age phase, 5-11 age phase and 7-11 age phase. By the end of the programme you’ll have met the Teachers’ Standards, and be recommended for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). You will also have achieved 60 level 7 Master’s credits and thus a PGCE. Both the 5-11 and 7-11 PGCE Primary and Early Years programmes are available as a 16-month, part-time option. Starting in January, you’ll be expected to study Monday to Wednesday each week, with two days free for your other commitments. To meet ITT criteria, and to ensure you are able to consistently meet the Teachers’ Standards, the final section of school training (approximately 10 weeks) will be full-time. This more flexible option allows you to balance your studies with work or childcare, right up until the final 10 weeks of training. It’s ideal if you are changing career, have a young family or other financial commitments.
ASSESSMENT A range of assignments test your understanding of learning and teaching theories and practice, and you’ll need to meet the Teachers’ Standards in a minimum of two school/setting phases. We’ll help you monitor your progress and development and offer plenty of constructive support and advice along the way. Your academic tutor will visit you during your assessed in-school training and be on hand for regular progress review meetings. You’ll also have a training mentor within your school, who’s usually the class teacher. Both will offer plenty of feedback, guidance and encouragement to help you improve your professional development. YOUR FUTURE CAREER This programme will make you a highly attractive employee in a range of schools and you’ll leave Bath Spa with the knowledge, experience and motivation to begin a successful career in education. “Head teachers are confident that they gain a professional who is of high quality when they employ NQTs from Bath Spa University. Consequently, employment rates are high.” Ofsted Report, rated Outstanding, September 2015
CHRISTOPHER WHITE, PGCE PRIMARY GRADUATE — “I have a lifelong passion for sport and have been involved in coaching young people. After gaining experience at an independent school, I decided that teaching was the right career choice for me. I expected to be at a disadvantage as I have limited school experience, however I found the programme supports everybody to be ready for the classroom. The university-led sessions introduced me to literature which helped me start to build my own philosophy about education. And it’s testament to my two mentors – and regular, targeted tutorials – that I became a confident teacher, constantly seeking to improve my teaching methods. Before I started, everyone said it would be the hardest year of my life. It has been, but it’s also been the most rewarding.”

Tax-free bursaries and scholarships of up to £28,000 are available in a range of secondary subjects
Exceptional teachers need exceptional training. In partnership with schools, our OfstedOutstanding rated programmes will equip you with the skills, knowledge and confidence you need to be an innovative and inspiring teacher.
You'll assess teaching methods from a critical standpoint and consider how theory can be put into practice. You'll also participate in presentations, practical projects and micro-teaching sessions, benefiting from peer support along the way. And, alongside your subject specialism, you'll explore whole- school issues and the wider role of the teacher, whilst also focusing on the skills that will enable you to pursue and develop your own professional path.
YOUR FUTURE CAREER With structured career progression, you can pursue your own long-term teaching goals – whether they’re rooted in the classroom, in a management role, or caring for students in a pastoral environment.
A major component of each programme is the role of information and communication technology (ICT). You’ll learn how to use technology to enhance the quality of your teaching and learning. Plus, you'll have opportunities to develop your skills in the use of relevant software, as well as how to use web-based tools to share your resources with your colleagues.
The variety of opportunities available means you’re always learning as a secondary teacher and adding to your range of professional skills. You may choose to carry on your studies at master’s level, using the 60 credits you’ll already have from completing the PGCE as a springboard to gaining a full MA.
Our Secondary PGCE with QTS programmes will enable you to teach your chosen subject to 11-16 year olds (KS3 and KS4) in a secondary school, with the option of post-16 enhancement up to A-level. You'll graduate with a PGCE with QTS and 60 level 7 Master’s credits – these can contribute to a full Master's qualification to further develop your professional and academic expertise. PROGRAMME STRUCTURE AND CONTENT You’ll spend around two-thirds of your time in a school or educational setting, supervised by school training mentors who work together with university trainers. You’ll also experience a range of other learning environments such as a primary and special school. And you’ll undertake a Professional Studies course which is delivered by both school and university trainers and covers generic ‘whole school’ issues. Throughout our PGCE courses, there’s an emphasis on subject application and practical workshops, where teaching strategies and appropriate contexts and techniques are modelled and discussed. You’ll investigate a range of teaching and learning strategies and materials designed for your subject at secondary level. And you’ll be encouraged to develop your own approach for use in schools.
Many of the secondary subjects are nationally recognised shortage subjects, which means employment prospects for teachers are very good in these areas.
ASSESSMENT You’ll be continually assessed across all aspects of the training: Subject Studies, Professional Studies and two school-assessed phases – one lasting seven weeks and another lasting 14 weeks. You’ll meet with your Academic Tutor at key points during the year to review your personal progress and set targets. And three assignments at level 7 (Postgraduate award) allow you to achieve Master’s credits.

The most influential piece of advice given to me, and something I stand firmly by now, is to never forget the reason why you embarked on the journey in the first place and never lose your passion.” Rachel Kerins, PGCE Secondary Design and Technology
On this course, you’ll develop a thorough understanding of the role English, drama and media play in education and why these interlinked subjects are so important for every child’s development. You'll also look at how a child's learning progresses, with a focus on how teaching styles affect their development. Help your students understand the world and their place in it. Explore fundamental questions about faith, philosophy and humanity. And teach a subject that will set their curiosity and wonder alight. In our increasingly globalised and connected world, Religious Studies (RS) at secondary school couldn’t be more important. That’s why our Religious Studies PGCE takes an open and exploratory approach that’s designed to fully prepare you for teaching RS in a multicultural context. The study of religion, secularism, different cultures and philosophy is an integral part of the programme. You’ll attend lectures, seminars and workshops, and give presentations to your peers. You’ll also have the chance to listen to visiting speakers and to make connections with local faith communities to enhance your own learning.
Science PHYSICS – UCAS CODE: F3X2 CHEMISTRY – UCAS CODE: F2X1 BIOLOGY – UCAS CODE: CX11
Spark curiosity and inspire the next generation of innovators. With generous bursaries of £26,000 available to fund your studies, teaching science is hugely rewarding – from day one. The Science PGCE at Bath Spa University is all about active learning. So, you’ll be involved in the life of the science faculty you are placed in and you’ll be expected to demonstrate your professional attributes from the outset. While you’ll focus on your chosen subject (Biology, Chemistry or Physics), you’ll also be given the opportunity to contribute to the wider curriculum and, in particular, STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) activities.
You’ll learn how to engage children in science, challenge misconceptions and help them develop vital critical thinking skills. Through workshops, you’ll be invited to explore a range of teaching resources and techniques, and to undertake experimental work, including information technology. We also explore how to use the outdoors as a teaching resource, as well as looking at how classroom management strategies can help you teach effective science lessons. To support your studies, there are extensive materials available on the internet. You’ll be encouraged to develop your ICT skills in preparing presentations, as well as using ICT for monitoring and recording your pupils’ progress.
“I really enjoyed working in schools and I was able to become a true member of the department. We also had experience in other schools including a Special Educational Needs (SEN) school which was extremely beneficial. The two main skills I learnt on the programme are professionalism and time-management … If you are considering doing a PGCE, do some practical research and get into a school … Teaching is not made for everyone, however, if you enjoy it it’s an extremely rewarding job.” Lyndsey McRae, PGCE Secondary Science/Biology
Alongside developing your subject knowledge, your time in two placement schools will equip you with the planning and organisation skills needed to be a successful RS teacher. Both your university and school mentors will encourage you to become an independent and reflective practitioner, to think critically about your own teaching, and how best to inspire students to fulfil their potential. “I wanted to be a positive male role model while helping teenagers fulfil their potential. Bath Spa University has an excellent reputation for Teacher Education. My Academic Tutor was really engaging, supportive and encouraging. Whenever I was finding things tough, she knew how to give me the confidence to keep going.” Jeremy Young, PGCE Secondary RE
