Drama Fest
Wars rage in Ireland, overshadowed only by those at home. King Richard has been forced to banish his cousin, Henry Bolingbroke, and now must travel across the sea to seek peace in war-torn Ireland. He returns to find his armies fled, his castles occupied and Bolingbroke returned in force to reclaim his title and his lands.
Bath Spa University Drama Studies Performance Projects.
As tension builds, the rage of a taxed and troubled country begins to take hold. England wants a king who will bring wealth and glory, and no one is prepared for the events that follow. Follow Apricity Theatre into an ageless world, where obsessive dominance and ideologies of war reign. This earthy, poetic adaptation of William Shakespeare’s Richard II explores a time of violence, of change, and of turmoil, to tell the story of a man who lived and died beneath the shadow of an unattainable ideal.
Drama Fest is a fringe festival comprising of up to 6 different works. It is a chance to see practical performance work made by this year’s graduating Drama students Drama at Bath Spa University offers specialised, creative arts and combined study pathways for students who seek to explore the immensity of drama as both a performance medium and an applied subject. Accordingly, the Drama Fest programme is diverse. It includes devised theatre, physical and visual theatre, stand-up comedy, processional theatre, immersive theatre, text-based drama, Shakespearean theatre, installations and more! Sophisticated African percussion + uber-funky double bass gives the music an irresistible groove through which European flavours of strings, woodwind and guitar are intricately woven, with soulful 4 part harmony singing and virtuoso dance as the icing on the cake. Ombiviolum’s ingenuity is not to be missed.

Poetry Night: Daljit Nagra ‘Playing with the ‘Punglish’ dialect of his parents’ generation, and its convoluted syntax, his poems burst with rhyme and alliteration, fusing the idioms and rhythms of the two cultures. […] Nagra’s poems are lively hymns to the richness of everyday life. His dramatic monologues are awash with mishearings and linguistic confusions… Through these surreal new coinages we see contemporary Britain painted afresh.’ (www. poetryinternationalweb.net) £5/£3/FREE

Dowland in Concert ‘When music and sweet poetry agree’: A celebration of the music of John Dowland and John Danyel By Dowland Works John Dowland was a consummate lutenist, but also a brilliant song-writer and polyphonist. Alongside his magical instrumental pieces he found unending inspiration in his eighty-odd songs, whether sung as solos, duos or in four-part consorts. Together with Dowland our concert also celebrates John Danyel, a West Country man from near Bath, who set the marvellous lyrics of his brother Samuel, the renowned court poet in Danyel’s Songs to the Lute, Viol and Voice (1606). £12/£10£6
