Who we are: The Go Global team
The Go Global team provide opportunities to study, work, and undertake research worldwide throughout your time at the University. We are here to provide support from start to finish!
“Hi, I’m Charlotte and I work as a Global Exchange Coordinator. I help to support students with all aspects of organising their study abroad placement. I run pre-departure and returnee sessions so you can make the most of your experience abroad! I especially love supporting the students who wouldn’t necessarily have the confidence to go abroad in the first place.”
“Hi I'm Gin, the course leader for Global Citizenship. If you are a Global Citizenship student, I'm your liaison for everything relating to the course, including all the group work, and finding the ideal placement. Seeing a student find a unique placement that's perfect for them is one of the best parts of this role, and reading about everyone's experiences in their essay reflections is one of my favourite parts of the year.”
“I liaise with all of our international partner institutions as well as work on developing new and exciting international opportunities for students. I love listening to students' stories from abroad, especially those learning or "aha!" moments when you discover something new about a different culture.”

Study Abroad
We have over 50 partner universities worldwide. During your second year as an undergraduate student, you could spend one semester studying at one of them.
Doing a semester abroad is an excellent opportunity to experience education in a different country, immerse yourself in a new culture, and learn a new language. Many students taking the Global Citizenship programme choose to study abroad.
www.bathspa.ac.uk/students/international/ exchange-opportunities/opportunities-foroutgoing-students/
What support is available to me?
To help you with the process, our Go Global team will:
• advise on accommodation options,
• offer pre-departure and returners sessions,
• offer continuous one-to-one coaching and advice, should you need it,
• run regular drop-in sessions.
To be eligible you need to...
• achieve a 2:1 average grade in your first year of undergraduate studies,
• apply by Friday 17 February 2023 to be able to study abroad for one semester in your second year of your undergraduate degree,
• apply for the same or a similar subject at our partner university that you’re studying at Bath Spa.
Do I need to speak another language?
Most partner universities teach in English. However, in some countries, such as Mexico, Japan and Taiwan you’ll be expected to have some knowledge of the language. Additional language classes are usually provided by our partner universities.
Will the placement impact my final grade?
The placement will not impact on your final grade, however, students who go abroad are more likely to earn higher degrees. You’ll need to complete the equivalent of 60 Bath Spa University credits during your semester abroad, but no actual grades will be transferred – the placement is pass or fail. Students are responsible for obtaining official transcripts and ensuring they are received by the Go Global team before credits can be successfully transferred.
Summer Schools
If you'd like to gain enriching international experience, but would rather go abroad for a shorter period of time, then attending a summer school is the perfect choice for you.
Summer schools provide the opportunity to engage with your subject area in a fun and different way, while experiencing a new culture and learning environment.
A summer school placement does not have to take place at one of our partner universities. Your options are flexible, limited only by your own choices and circumstances. Look for universities in a country or a city that you have always wanted to visit or live in for a short time, and check to see if they offer a summer school programme in your subject area.
Where can I go to do a summer school?
In the past, our students have taken part in summer schools organised by our partners in China, Denmark, Hong Kong, Mexico, Sweden and others. Our 2023 summer schools will be announced during the spring semester through the student email newsletter and on social media.
Is there any funding available?
If your summer school lasts for at least three weeks, you may be eligible for the Outward Mobility Award. Please check the Funding pages for more information.

Research Abroad
You can also choose to carry out some of your research abroad.
If it’s for your dissertation, your coordinator will be your first point of contact. They’ll be able to guide you through choosing an appropriate location to carry out your research.
In the meantime, our Go Global team will help you apply for funding, assist you with pre-departure information and organise returners sessions. These are designed to help you communicate your experiences not just for your dissertation but also to a wider audience and on into your career.
Speak to your tutors and subject leaders about research opportunities they might be able to tell you about. Students in the past have visited partners in Europe, Africa, and South America in order to visit archives, take part in workshops, and collect data for their work.

HOW DO I APPLY?
First, get in touch with the Placements Team. Once your work placement has been approved, the Go Global Team will organise your funding!
"I chose to do a placement abroad because I love to travel and it has always been an ambition of mine to work in another country and learn another language. My favourite thing about living and working in Valencia was meeting people from all over the world and now I have friends in Australia, New Zealand, the USA and many other European countries. I feel much more confident in my public speaking and presentation skills. I even gave a presentation in front of the entire office staff, including the owner of the company, which was daunting at first but I received positive feedback, which was great!"
Professional Placement Year (PPY) abroad
The PPY is taken between the second and third year of your undergraduate degree enabling you to take an extended period of work experience. You can go abroad during your PPY and make your work placement or placements international.
Develop your skills, build your professional network, and gain a clearer picture of what your career path could look like, all in another country. If you want your career to be international after you graduate, a PPY abroad can be a fantastic place to start.
Funding
The fees during your PPY will be set at 20% of the cost of a normal full-time year at university. You can also apply for grants and bursaries designed to aid students travelling abroad for university work - find out more by contacting myfinance@bathspa.ac.uk.
Requirements
Your placement needs to be approved by the Placements Team, and you need to complete 900 hours over a minimum of 30 weeks, which you can achieve through one or multiple placements. The Go Global Team will guide you through your departure and return and ensure you are prepared for your time working abroad.

Funding and finance
There are many funding opportunities to help you with the costs of taking a trip abroad.
Will my tuition fees change?
No. Your course and tuition fees will not change if you choose to take advantage of our international opportunities. You will only pay tuition fees to Bath Spa University. No tuition fees are payable at the exchange institution.
What costs am I likely to incur?
Costs will vary depending on where you're going. As a budget starting point, factor in the cost of insurance, visa fees, flights, accommodation, as well as food, local transport and social events. It is important to take these into consideration, however, we do have a range of funding opportunities available to help cover some of these costs.
Other options
Will I lose my funding from Student Finance England?
No. You’ll be entitled to keep all your current student loans and grants from Student Finance England. In fact, you may even qualify for additional funding. If you receive funding from a source other than Student Finance England, make sure you always check the terms and conditions.
Bath Spa participates in the Turing Scheme, the UK's global programme for studying, working and living abroad. A Turing Scheme grant is provided as a contribution towards the cost of living whilst undertaking a period of mobility abroad. It is not intended to cover all expenses.
If you are eligible to receive the funding, you will need to complete some essential Turing Scheme paperwork before you travel, including a Grant Agreement. This is all completed through the Go Global Team, so you don't need to apply for the funding elsewhere.
