Because of the generous support of our donors, we’ve been able to help Bath Spa students exceed their own expectations and realise their dreams. Whether that means being able to travel and study overseas, to purchase that out-of-reach instrument or piece of equipment, or to jumpstart careers at trade shows and exhibitions, you have had a material and tangible impact on the opportunities of so many. You can read their stories on the following pages.
(Not) Only (a) Girl ‘I was so grateful for the funding as it meant that I could have much more artistic freedom, without worrying about how I was going to pay the bills. My installation was a success, many people reported how moved they were by it, that it had opened their eyes and provoked changes in their thinking. None of this could have happened without the help of your donors, so a million times THANK YOU!’ Eliza Willmott BA (Hons) Creative Music Technology
seeds of inspiration ‘My award from Bath Spa has allowed me to self-publish my book ‘Autumn, Caught’. This year has been a whirlwind of words that settled among the trees at Westonbirt, in the Wye Valley, in people’s homes, in publishers’ offices. I have learnt to be true to myself and this is what has connected me and opened the door to new possibilities. My words are all I have to offer, but they are me; my connection to this world. Thank you to the Alumni of Bath Spa University for their financial support of my work.’ Marchant Barron BA (Hons) Creative Writing
pots full of success at new designers ‘Since New Designers, I received invitations to show work, and to feature in Emerging Potters magazine. I was also selected to apply for the ‘One Year In’ exhibition. This was a great opportunity for me and everyone else in our group. From all of us in the Ceramics and Creative Arts Practice cohort, thank you!’ Samantha Silverton MA Ceramics
Not Just Survive, Thrive! ‘The funding I’ve received has genuinely lifted a weight from my shoulders. Without it I would never have been able to afford equipment like a Mac (before I didn’t even own a laptop) and other course materials. What I have been able to achieve as a result has been huge.
Thank you to everyone involved. It genuinely does make a huge difference, enabling students to thrive at their specialism rather than just coasting.’ Elivia Atkinson BA (Hons) Textile Design for Fashion & Interiors
Different Ways of Seeing
Equipped for the Future
The Porthleven Prize offers students the rare opportunity to work collaboratively across various creative disciplines to produce work for a major exhibition.
‘The funds I received this year have had a huge impact on me as a musician - now I have instruments for a brilliant sounding EP and the perfect tools for my two bands. I was also able to purchase a laptop computer, which has made my studies far easier as before all my academic work was being done via a mobile device. Your generous contribution really has made a difference to my university experience. I feel like a properly equipped musician.’
‘I discovered that working with practitioners from different specialisms helps you to see through different eyes and use a range of languages to express your thinking. The residency was the most fun I have had working that hard! This has been the best experience I have had during my time at Bath Spa. Thank you.’ Deborah Westmancoat MA Fine Art
Arlen King BA (Hons) Commercial Music
greetings from stockholm! ‘I can honestly say Stockholm has become a second home to me. It is a wonderfully colourful place full of culture, museums, a thirst for knowledge and memories of a history long since past. There is so much to discover and learn about. This award has enriched my academic experience, given me the opportunity to make friends from all over the world and given me the most joyous and happiest memories of my life. Thank you!’ Louise Thacker BA (Hons) Creative Writing
