International Opportunities

Welcome Internationalisation is central to education here at Bath Spa University: one of our main objectives is to help our graduates to become global citizens so that you are able to truly flourish and compete in the increasingly competitive global job market. One of the best ways you can do this is by undertaking a study abroad placement, either at an Erasmus+ or an International Exchange partner university. Studying abroad is a unique opportunity and one that is likely to provide you with some of your most memorable life experiences. Most degree programmes across the University have partners on either the Erasmus+ or Exchange programme in their subject. This means that study abroad opportunities are open to every Bath Spa University student. We are seeking new partners for those subjects not currently listed in this guide, so please speak to the International Relations team to find out if there are potential new partners in your subject area. Undertaking a placement abroad is a great opportunity to meet people and to develop your cultural awareness. All of these attributes will make you more employable upon graduation from Bath Spa University. A 2015 report by the UK HE International Unit, 'Gone International', concluded that a higher proportion of UK graduates who were mobile were employed; a higher proportion of graduates who were mobile were working abroad (if in employment). On average, graduates who were mobile earned more in 11 out of 17 subject areas, and earned more if they remained in the UK to work. We hope that you will find the information in this guide helpful in directing you through the initial steps of deciding which type of placement - Erasmus+ or International Exchange - is for you, and how to apply. If you have any questions, please contact us or call into our office in Main House (Newton Park, MH.G17) Cathy Leng Head of International Relations

erasmus + Funded by the European Commission, Erasmus+ offers students mobility programmes with a wide range of Higher Education Institutions across Europe. As a Bath Spa University student you’ll be able to study abroad for one semester during year 2 at one of our many partner institutions across Europe.

Erasmus+ students are eligible for a grant to help support the costs associated with studying abroad. The grant amount is dependent on the country of the host institution as some countries have a higher cost of living than others. The figures used in this guide are based on 2016/17 funding amounts.

The majority of our partners in Europe have English taught programmes therefore language need not be a barrier to studying abroad for a semester as part of the Erasmus+ programme. Furthermore, most institutions offer language classes to visiting Erasmus+ students who wish to learn a new language while they’re abroad so you’ll have the opportunity to learn a new language too.

Erasmus+ students need to gain 30 European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) credits whilst studying abroad for one semester in order to gain a pass grade. This is equivalent to 60 Bath Spa University credits. Grades achieved whilst studying abroad do not contribute towards your overall degree classification, only the grades achieved in your semester spent at Bath Spa University in year 2 and year 3 will be used towards this classification.

Agreements with our partner institutions are subject-specific therefore you’ll need to ensure that your subject is currently part of our agreement with your preferred institution before applying. Use this guide to check this information and also liaise with your Academic Coordinator about your choice of institution.

The University of Art and Design Linz was conceived as an explicit statement to signify disassociation from previous art policies of the National Socialist era. This is in particular exemplified by its emphasis on the fundamental values of freedom of art and research, its commitment to modernism and contemporary art and the positioning of the University at the interface of free artistic and applied economically-oriented design.

Sweden

Cody Moir BA (Hons) Creative Writing I went to do my Erasmus study abroad period in Stockholm, the capital city of Sweden. The main reason that I decided to go in the first place was in order to expand my awareness of the world around me and other cultures. Being in an international environment the whole time really did fulfill this desire. Another reason I wanted to go was to keep my degree fresh and exciting, whilst also keeping me from taking Bath for granted. I feel that it was extremely valuable having some time away from Bath in order to appreciate it when I came back. The experience was utterly life changing in every way possible, and I'm a totally different person to who I was when I left for Sweden. I met a beautiful bunch of international students who all had something brilliant to bring to the group! I even learnt a little bit of Swedish when I was out there. Overall it was an incredible experience, and I couldn't be happier that I took the opportunity. The best advice I could give would be: Don't worry. Don't worry about funding, don't worry about loved ones back home, don't worry about anything, and don't let anything stop you from taking this opportunity by the horns! Just go for it!

I cannot express enough how much of a wonderful experience the ERASMUS programme is. I had the best four months of my life. I made new friends and my two flatmates from California and Austria will be friends for life. The teaching in Sweden is quite different. It is more about small groups and discussions and debates than in large seminars. The biggest class size I had was 10 and we were all international students studying Education. I think the experience did change me as a person, but definitely for the better! I have grown in confidence so much. It is so empowering to start 'alone' in new surroundings, with no friends and a language barrier and to be able to get to the other side having had the most amazing journey. If you are thinking of doing a placement, do it! It is an absolutely fantastic experience that will open so many doors for you. I thoroughly enjoyed it and embraced every opportunity. I would honestly do another placement tomorrow if one was available. As a person, it really brought me out of my shell and that has continued since I have been home.

Exchange We also have a number of partners throughout the rest of the world. You can take advantage of study opportunities available in Australia, China, Japan, Mexico, Taiwan or the USA. Studying on an Exchange placement is an excellent opportunity to experience education in a different country, immerse yourself in a new culture and learn a new language. It also looks great on your CV and will help boost your employability options in a global market. The Exchange placement takes place in your second year of study. On completion, you return to Bath Spa with the equivalent number of credits that you would have achieved if you had stayed in the UK. The placement counts towards your degree and does not add any extra time to your studies. You need to successfully pass your exchange placement exams and assessments in order to gain credits but the actual grades you receive are not counted towards your degree classification. You must complete a minimum of 60 Bath Spa credits per semester (30 ECTS). The programme of study at the partner institution must follow the same subject(s) that you study at Bath Spa. Most classes will be taught in English but, in some countries such as Japan or Mexico, you are expected to have some prior knowledge of the language.

Gabriela Tejeiro BA (Hons) Business & Management with International First Year Shanghai University of Finance and Economics I went to Shanghai, China for 6 months to study Business. I decided to go there because I was fascinated by Chinese culture and I was also studying Mandarin. To gain funding for this trip I saved money and I also gained an International Travel Fund scholarship. Overall, it was one of the best experiences of my life, Shanghai is amazing - it’s futuristic and it’s completely different from any other city in the exchange program. You can find the classic ancient Chinese in the poorer areas and then on the other side the newest technology where everything is super fancy and luxurious. That is the reason that I decided to find an internship there and stay longer. In China I made not only friends, I made a family. Living in a country as different as China without knowing the language made us stay closer. Without them it wouldn’t have been possible to find out how to get a phone number or how to pay the bills! We always talk and we will meet again in September. At SUFE the teaching was completely different - all the BSU students struggled to adjust at first. It is amazing how Chinese people study because the learning is so quick and we had an exam every week. Even though it was harder it has been the time that I have learned most.

Studying abroad has completely changed me as a person - China made me a new person, I believe now that everything is possible, that some things are just stereotypes and that different cultures are amazing. China made me humbler. I didn’t have any major problems while there because from the first moment I considered Shanghai to be my home and overall I didn’t have any big difficulties. I studied 9 hours of Mandarin each week. It was amazing and it was super motivating because it’s what we needed to survive, so every day after class I would try to use what I had learned. Now that I’m back I’ve realized that studying abroad has helped me to be more grateful and to appreciate the things that I have that some people can’t have. The advice that I would give current first years who are thinking about applying for study abroad is to go and live it as it will finish tomorrow! Don’t be scared and try everything while you’re there. My 6 months passed so quickly – it just wasn’t enough time. Also, it’s important to clarify academic aspects of your stay before you go for example the number of credits you’re taking while you’re there.

Matthew R Garlick BA (Combined Hons) English Literature and Philosophy & Ethics Shinshu University I decided to got to Japan to learn the language mostly but to also experience a culture I had only read about in books. I have now spent nearly a year of my life in Matsumoto city in the Nagano prefecture of Japan which is regarded as one of the most beautiful and peaceful places in Japan. However it still boasts a lively small city atmosphere with restaurants, bars, clubs and even its own airport. In Shinshu University I currently study Philosophy, English Literature, Japanese, German and Japanese culture. The BSU International team helped me find contacts in my host university and answered any and all inquiries I had. Funding is almost negligible, but cost of living was very reasonable so there were few issues. Studying is at times trying, as learning a new language can be very demanding but it is as equally rewarding. Since coming to Japan I have made lots of new friends and regularly message them although we are spread across three quarters of the Earth. I have met lots of people from countries I have had no contact before, and I am delighted to have had such amazing exposure to the wider world and feel it has changed my perspective on life in many ways for the better. The main piece of advice I can offer a student interested in studying at Shinshu University, or at any host university, is that if you really want to do it then go for it. There will be many obstacles but if my time abroad has taught me anything, it is that I am capable of much more than I ever expected and it will be the same for you.

Kris Nock BA (Hons) Music Montana State University Billings I went to Montana State University Billings for 3 and a half months to study Music. I decided to go because I have always had a passion for the 'American lifestyle' and my long term goal is to move over there in a few years, so for me this was an opportunity to spend some time getting to know the place, make some contacts and confirm that this was the course of action I want to take. The experience was so much better than I could have ever anticipated. I have made a lot of friends, with whom I still speak to, some on a daily basis, and we plan to visit each other soon. Some of my friends are now saving and planning on coming over to the UK. I had lots of opportunities over there to connect with people, such as famous LA trumpet players Wayne Bergeron and Ron Blake who came to town to do workshops with the high school kids and because of the contacts I made I was able to go along and meet them, and I now have plans to visit them in the near future. I was also able to travel lots, and made visits to Red Lodge Ski Resort, Yellowstone National Park and

Mount Rushmore. While I was there, I also taught the Billings Senior High School symphonic band which was extremely rewarding and because of this was able to take a trip with them to Bozeman to the Regional Football Championships. The teaching is extremely different here. Over in America they are more homework and test based, and I had homework almost every night, and at least one test a week, however I actually found that to be easier as they test you specifically on what you have learnt, and unless you have really not paid attention, there's not really any way to fail a test. It was extremely hard to come back to the UK. For the last few days before my flight I was very upset about leaving, but at the surprise leaving party that they threw me, where almost everyone that I met over the course of the few months attended, I realised that even though I was going back home, a part of me would be left there with them, and I took a part of them back with me.

Abigail Brind BA (Hons) in Education Studies SUNY Geneseo, New York I always knew I wanted to study abroad as part of my degree and luckily the Bath Spa international exchange programme made that possible. From looking at the University locations for my course I chose to study education at ‘SUNY Geneseo’ in New York State, America. Both the International office at Bath Spa and at Geneseo were very helpful in making it become a reality and we were in regular contact via email. As I did not originally have all the funds necessary for the exchange I decided to apply for the Bath Spa International Travel Fund, I was shocked to find out I had been awarded £700 to help towards the exchange. It was such a simple process and definitely worth filling out the short form if you are considering studying abroad. My time at SUNY Geneseo was the best experience of my life and I couldn’t recommend it highly enough. I made two of the best friends I’ve ever had while there. We spent Thanksgiving together in one of their hometowns near Buffalo and since leaving Geneseo they have travelled to England and we have recently been on holiday together. As well as this I made friends with all of the International students and many students in my classes.

The University campus is situated in a small town and it has a strong sense of community which you soon become a part of and can make friends with anyone you meet. The views from campus can be beautiful and all the amenities you need are right at your doorstep. If you’re thinking about travelling to Letchworth State Park, which is known as the Grand Canyon of the East, it is just 30 minutes away and Rochester is the nearest city. For longer trips there is Buffalo, Niagrara Falls, Toronto, New York City, Philadelphia and Washington DC. The International office regularly arranged trips for the International students for as little as $60. I had so much fun studying Education in America, in a lot of ways I preferred it to my course at Bath Spa. I got the chance to visit and teach in several different Elementary schools while I was there which was very rewarding and beneficial to my degree. Studying at SUNY Geneseo was a life-changing experience and it has only made me want to travel more and live in as many places as I can. I was so sad to return home after 5 months and leave my life and friends in Geneseo behind, but I can’t wait to go back and visit soon!

Accommodation

Accommodation Accommodation arrangements at Bath Spa University Students seriously considering a semester abroad will need to think carefully about their accommodation requirements for their time at Bath Spa University. Most housing contract lengths will be year long and if students are going to be on a mobility placement for one semester they may find themselves committed to a housing contract for a room that they do not require for several months. Bath Spa University recognised that this was a major barrier for students going abroad on Exchange or Erasmus and so the accommodation team have allocated a limited number of rooms in Pope Halls of residence to the International Office. These rooms are for Bath Spa University students requiring a semester-long contract (since they’ll be abroad for one semester). This allocation is new for the academic year 2016/17 and has been greatly welcomed by outgoing Exchange and Erasmus+ students from Bath Spa University. If you are given a place on the Exchange or Erasmus+ programme you can then apply for a room in Pope Halls. The deadline for applying for a room in either Semester 1 or Semester 2 of your 2nd year is 7th April 2017. Further details of how to apply for this accommodation will be made available when you receive confirmation of your place on either the Exchange or Erasmus+ programme.

Accommodation at host university Accommodation at the host destination will be arranged through the partner institution. You will receive information about this once you have been nominated to your host institution (from April/May for Semester 1 placements and October/November for Semester 2 placements). Each university is different - some will offer on-campus living with student dormitories and guaranteed accommodation whereas others will advise you on how to find off-campus accommodation via private landlords. In the USA it is quite common for students to share a bedroom so please be aware of this cultural difference prior to applying.

Finance

49

finance Student Finance England If you receive a maintenance loan from Student Finance England (SFE) then you should inform them that you will be studying abroad as soon as you receive an official confirmation of placement from the host university. SFE will usually adjust the loan to reflect and support an international study placement. It is your responsibility to inform SFE at the earliest opportunity, once you have received confirmation from the host university, to ensure enough time for any additional paperwork and changes to be made. Student Finance England Travel Grant Students going abroad are eligible to apply for the SFE travel grant. The SFE grant allows you to potentially claim reimbursement for travel costs, insurance and visa costs above ÂŁ303. You have to pay the first ÂŁ303 yourself. www.gov.uk/travel-grants-students-england/ overview Bath Spa University International Travel Fund

Erasmus+ Student Mobility Funding Students who participate in the Erasmus+ programme can receive an Erasmus+ mobility grant. This grant is an allocation of money that is intended to contribute towards the extra costs of studying abroad. You receive 70% of the money whilst you are away and the remaining 30% upon your return to the UK. The grant is not repayable and is paid to you by Bath Spa University through the Erasmus+ national agency for the UK (the British Council). The mobility grant is intended to help with additional expenses that may occur while you are studying abroad. You should not depend on it to cover all of your living costs. The mobility grant can be used alongside any additional student loans and grants that you normally receive. If you normally receive a maintenance loan, maintenance grant or Bath Spa University bursary then you should continue to apply for these as normal.

The Bath Spa International Travel Fund has been designed to assist students who want to study abroad for more than 3 months. Application is online and direct to Bath Spa University. You must be able to prove how receiving funds from the travel fund would positively impact on your studies.
