Joanna said: “It started with a small boy I’d glimpsed on a street, his sleeping bag on his back like a nylon snail. From that came pages of notes about a boy called Tom, who eventually turned into Joe.” As well as lecturing on the MA Creative Writing course at Bath Spa, Joanna has written more than 70 award-winning books for children and adults, and currently works with Sir Chris Hoy on the Flying Fergus series.

New Art and Design campus for 2019 ARCHITECTS IMPRESSION OF THE COMPLETED CAMPUS
We’re very excited that work is nearly complete on our new Locksbrook Campus. If you come to study art and design at Bath Spa University you will be one of the first to use this amazing new space. Originally designed by Sir Nicholas Grimshaw for Herman Miller, the American furniture manufacturers in 1976, Bath Spa University has spent the last few years revitalising this Grade II listed building. Grimshaw Architects have worked closely with Bath Spa to transform the iconic building into an extraordinary facility for artists and designers to flourish. Right from the outset, we placed students and their creative practice central to the design of the new campus. The new building is open-plan, with large, adaptable spaces. The new campus will house large, open social areas, presentation spaces, a rooftop pavilion and art shop. At the heart of this new facility will be making and fabrications spaces, to enable ambitious and collaborative project work, plus an art and enterprise shop. Visit www.bathspa.ac.uk/locksbrookcampus

Tim Vyner, renowned British illustrator and Senior Lecturer at Bath Spa University, has drawn and documented major events across the world including many sporting events. Did you know he was commissioned to digitally document the World Cup in Russia? An event was held which saw more than 200 street-connected children from across the globe take part in their own international football tournament, festival of arts and congress for their rights. Tim then documented the event with illustrations drawn on an iPad to capture the essence of that exact moment in time, tell the stories of young boys and girls, representing 24 national teams, playing to change the negative perceptions and treatment of street-connected children across the world.
First black female Professor of History in the UK Our very own Bath Spa University Professor, Olivette Otele, became the UK’s first female black Professor of History. Olivette, who holds a PhD in History is also the first black female to be awarded a personal Chair position, in recognition for her high levels of achievement within the field. Olivette, who teaches History here at Bath Spa, said: “There are many hard-working women, especially women of colour, working in academia, and I hope this will open the door to more of them receiving the recognition they deserve.”

What to expect at interview Current Bath Spa BA History student Erin MinettSmith came for an interview as part of her application process. Talking about the experience, Erin said: “I feel like making a connection with a member of staff was positive. That’s the kind of relationship I wanted to have with the University – being able to talk through what I like and the opportunities this University could provide me. As a result, I wasn’t worried. It reassured me and I spent the summer enjoying myself and looking forward to university, rather than dreading moving away from home. I just knew it was the right place for me.”
