We want to help you to be curious, to question, and to develop the skills to thrive in this rapidly changing world. I hope that you quickly feel at home here. We place great importance in fostering a sense of belonging amongst our students, creating a community within our stunning surroundings. There are a variety of ways you can get involved in university life alongside your course, and I encourage you all to visit the Students’ Union and find out about all they offer – like the comic book society, rugby, and dance clubs (and a whole host of other things!), I’m sure you’ll find something that interests you. I’d also urge you all to explore your new city. One of the world’s most beautiful cities, Bath is a UNESCO listed site, with Roman and Georgian heritage, but it is also a vibrant, forward-looking place, renowned for being a hotbed of inventors, entrepreneurs, artisans and independent thinkers. This is a university like no other, and I very much look forward to seeing you thrive here over the coming years.

“I remember being told in my first year that I should run as a sabbatical officer in my third year, I wasn’t too sure what a sabbatical officer did or was so I did some digging. I soon found out that sabbatical officers have lots of different roles and are really important in ensuring students are cared for. Once I started my third year I knew that I wanted to give back to the students at Bath Spa and that the President role was the one for me. As your SU President my main role is to represent you as students and ensure that your voices are being heard in every aspect of university life. “I first fell in love with Bath Spa when I came to visit on an open day 2015. With BA Music specialising in jazz being what I wanted to study, I couldn’t help but picture myself singing every day with the beautiful Newton Park campus as my home. Once I arrived at Bath Spa my thoughts couldn’t have been more accurate. I had the best three years of my life here and truly indulged in every aspect of student life, making countless friends and memories along the way. Bath Spa gave me opportunities and experiences that I wouldn’t have found otherwise and it still feels like home to me. “The biggest thing that I found as a student was the sense of community at Bath Spa. There are so many different clubs and societies, ranging from sport to academia and everything in between. There is an opportunity for everyone to find their place here at Bath Spa, it really is like one big family. “I feel so proud to have been a Bath Spa student and am grateful for the experiences I was given. I look forward to meeting all of the new students who have got their whole University chapter ahead of them! These are some of the best years of your life and I feel honoured to be your President for 2019/2020. Never forget that the there is always someone to help with whatever you need at Bath Spa and we are here for you on every step of your journey!”

Student artworks admired in private view event at Abbey Hotel Local dignitaries including Councillor Manda Rigby, Deputy Mayor of Bath, and Reverend Canon Guy Bridgewater, Rector of Bath Abbey, recently attended a private event celebrating the work of this year’s Bath Spa University art and design graduates. The event, held at the Abbey Hotel’s ArtBar, marked the launch of its ‘On the Horizon’ exhibition, showcasing new creations from the University’s fine and graphic art, lino print, knitwear and textiles graduates. The artworks were hand-picked by the hotel’s artist-in-residence, Emma Taylor, from hundreds on display at the University’s annual degree show earlier this summer. Graduates were joined by their families and friends for the evening, and additional guests including Stella Pirie OBE, Bath Spa University donor, honorary graduate, and former chair of its Board of Governors, as well as local business news journalist Robert Buckland.
In 2018, Bath Spa University academic, Professor Olivette Otele, became the UK’s first female black Professor of History. Professor Otele also became the first black female to be awarded a personal Chair position, in recognition for her high levels of achievement within the field. Professor Otele, who holds a PhD in History from Universite La Sorbonne in France, said: “I’m delighted to have been awarded a Professorship and a Chair in History by Bath Spa University, and thank them for their support. There are many hard-working women, especially women of colour, working in academia, and I hope this will open the door to more of them receiving the recognition they deserve.”

Former Bath Spa Commercial Music student Jed Elliott recently appeared on stage stateside with his fourpiece Brit rock band, The Struts, who supported the Foo Fighters with their latest string of US shows. Having already performed with The Rolling Stones, Guns N’ Roses and The Who, The Struts were personally picked by Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl after he saw them entertain crowds in his hometown of Washington, DC. Discussing the journey he took to reach this milestone, Jed said: “It was an honour to be invited by Mr Dave Grohl. I have a lot to thank the Commercial Music course for! After studying at Bath Spa University I had the opportunity to join The Struts. We signed with Virgin EMI and toured extensively across the UK and France for a few years, leading to a support show with The Rolling Stones in Paris. This attracted the attention of management based in America and in 2015 we signed with Interscope Records and relocated to Los Angeles.” “I feel that the course inspired me to improve as a musician but also equipped me with the skills to form relationships in the music industry, based on an understanding of the roles involved. I was able to have a solid idea of how to treat my band as a product, without inhibiting the creativity, and this proved invaluable when it came to management and record label discussions. I also developed production skills, became much more confident as a performer and fell even more in love with music.”

Maisie Williams visits Bath Spa University to celebrate creative industries
Masie Williams talks about new app ‘Daisie’, the creative industries, entrepreneurship and individuality.
Game of Thrones star Masie Williams visited Bath Spa University last year! She gave a talk to 250 students as headline speaker at an event celebrating the creative industries, entrepreneurship and individuality. The talk gave students the opportunity to hear first-hand about how Maisie broke into the creative industries in her teens and became an international TV star by the age of 21, and how she is now venturing into tech entrepreneurship. Maisie also talked about why she co-founded Daisie with business partner Dom Santry, and how creative, talented students - like those at Bath Spa University can benefit from the platform. Maisie said: “Previous to Daisie, success in the creative industries has been wholly dependent on luck and ‘ins’ to the industry. Daisie introduces a new way into the creative world; through connections made organically and the natural development of your skills, propelling individuals to the next level. We’re so excited to facilitate the future of creative collaboration.”

Child refugees living in Egypt to benefit from Education project
Bath Spa–led international Smart Cities research team kicks off collaboration An international research team met for the first time earlier this year at Bath Spa University to investigate how Smart Cities can play a part in improving local water ecosystems. A Smart City is one which actively collects data from a range of dispersed resources – including its citizens’ own connected devices – and processes and analyses the information centrally to aid better decision-making. The researchers, made up of academics from Universities in Mexico and the UK, is led by Bath Spa University Senior Lecturer in Nature Conservation and Environmental Management, Dr Ian Thornhill. The ‘RESPiRES’ project - standing for 'RESilient People need Resilient EcoSystems' - is examining what more could be done to incorporate people’s values into the monitoring and management of their local water ecosystems, so-called ‘blue spaces’ such as wetlands, ponds, lakes and rivers. The team is investigating Bristol and Mexico City as cities with contrasting economic circumstances.
Tens of thousands of child refugees from Syria and Sudan living in Egypt will have the chance of an education better suited to their very particular needs, thanks to an international research project being co-delivered by Bath Spa University. Academic staff from the University’s Institute for Education earlier this month hosted colleagues from leading universities in Cyprus, Egypt and Greece to work on plans for the world’s first ever higher education diploma specifically designed for refugee teachers, and others teaching refugee children. The project includes academic and teacher training specialists from each of the universities, working with a senior Bath Spa University team, led by Head of Teacher Education, Pat Black. Pat Black commented: “We’re really thrilled to be involved in this world-first project, and to be working with and learning from such knowledgeable and experienced international colleagues. Our input, alongside that of our international colleagues, will help hundreds of teachers make a real practical difference, on the ground, to the lives and futures of tens of thousands of refugee children.” SPACE | 15

Eleanor, who graduated in 2014, recently completed a 15-month tour with Peppa Pig Live!, where she graced the stage as Mummy Pig and Madame Gazelle. Eleanor credits Bath Spa with giving her skills and experience to help move her career forward. “I gained a lot of knowledge during my degree that I definitely took with me into my auditions and performances,” she said. “We had a lot of fun at Bath Spa working with improvisation, singing, instruments and script work. It definitely opened my eyes to the world of children’s theatre and helped me fall in love with the characters!” Talking about what drives her enthusiasm, Eleanor said she finds inspiration in working with her fellow actors. “I’ve worked with a very talented group of women this year who inspired me every day and really spurred me on to do more for my career. “It can be a pretty cut throat industry - networking, emailing the right people and inviting casting directors and agents to come watch your shows,” Eleanor said. “But we do it because we love it!’’

Gumdrop: A smarter way to chew No, you’re not imagining those pink spheres dotted around our campuses, they are in fact Gumdrop points! What’s that we hear you say? Well, we’re glad you asked. Gumdrop points were introduced to all of our campuses as a new way for students, staff and all chewing gum lovers to bin their gum in an environmentally-friendly way that would also help to improve our waste and recycling system. You’ll find the eye-catching Gumdrop points attached to lots of our outdoor bins and at eye level on key routes around our campuses, such as outside our famous Michael Tippett Centre at Newton Park Campus. Once you’ve dropped your gum into the special containers, it’s then collected and recycled into a mouldable polymer known as ‘Gum-tec’. From here, it can then be made into frisbees, sports cones, wellington boots and more! So now you know, you can ditch your gum the smarter and more sustainable way.

Commercial Music graduate wins Emmy Award for work on Black Mirror Bath Spa University BA Commercial Music graduate Oliver Ferris’ hard work has been recognised at last year’s Emmy Awards. The episode of hit TV show, Black Mirror, which he worked on as a Foley Artist won the 2018 ‘Emmy for Outstanding Sound Editing for a Limited Series, Movie or Special.’ As a Foley Artist, Oliver reproduces every day sounds that are recorded and added to films and television shows in a post-production setting. He said: “These sounds can include anything from footsteps to cloth movement. One day I could be recording sword fights and then recreating a banquet scene the next! There’s such a variety of material to work with that no two days are ever the same.” When asked how his Bath Spa University experience helped him get to where he is today, Oliver said: “I have always been interested in film and television but Bath Spa provided me with an understanding and experience of working with tools that I now use every day. My course helped me realise that being a Foley Artist was something that really suited my skills and interests and I haven’t looked back since.” SPACE | 17

Tim Vyner, renowned British illustrator and Senior Lecturer in Illustration at Bath Spa University, stunningly captured the Street Child World Cup: The Future Depends On You in Moscow ahead of last year’s FIFA World Cup using a series of reportage illustrations – a visual journalism technique which records events by hand and in real time. Tim was commissioned by the UK charity, Street Child United, to digitally document this year’s tournament. The event saw more than 200 streetconnected children from across the globe take part in their own international football tournament, festival of arts and congress for their rights. The reportage illustrations, which are drawn on an iPad then animated with recorded audio to capture the essence of that exact moment in time, tell the stories of young boys and girls, representing 24 national teams, playing to change the negative perceptions and treatment of street-connected children across the world. Off the pitch, the young people will make their voices heard, calling for the rights of millions of children surviving on the streets worldwide. The artwork created from the Street Child United World Cup helped tell some of the amazing stories that unfolded at the event, including the opening and closing ceremonies, which saw Brazilian footballer Gilberto Silva take part in Q&As with each team, expressive drumming workshops and

the Late Shows, a series of on stage evening performances, choreographed by team members which highlighted the culture of their country in the form of music, dance or drama. Each piece created by Tim demonstrates the power reportage illustration has in capturing the atmosphere of an event, in a form that enables viewers to become immersed in the moment. He said: “Visual journalism is an exciting way to capture the passion, atmosphere and participation that has coursed its way through this fantastic event, and I’m thrilled that the illustrations have turned out so well. The Street Child United World Cup has been incredibly vibrant from start to finish and it’s been fantastic to see sport and art changing the lives of so many people. “As our world grows increasingly fast-paced, it can be hard to find the time to stop, observe and record the changes happening around us. People consume news in real time, so the power of reportage illustration is in the immediacy of the images that are created and the feeling of the illustrator's presence on location.”
