Hello.
Make yourself comfortable as you delve into the pages and take a look at some of the exciting things our Bath Spa community has achieved over the last year.
As you start to become familiar with your new surroundings, before you know it, you too will be creating your very own unique stories just like these.
And as you enter this exciting new phase in your life, I encourage you to be creative, confident and remain curious – about the new people you will meet and the fascinating things you will learn. In turn I can predict that you will make fond memories that will last you a lifetime and make you feel proud.
A university is the sum of its students and staff, and so much more – it is a community of learners and a place to grow. Your talent and skills make Bath Spa University what it is, and ensuring that you flourish is vitally important to all of us –your tutors and professional services teams alike – who work to support you at Bath Spa.
Each new academic year is the start of a new journey; this is where you begin that journey with us.
Professor Sue Rigby Vice-ChancellorI’d like to wish you a very warm welcome to Bath Spa University and this special edition of SPACE magazine.
Welcome to your home away from home!
A special place where you can stroll to a morning lecture or grab a coffee with friends, watching the mist slowly rise over rolling green hills. Newton Park is set in the magnificent grounds of a historic manor house. It means that, as well as providing stunning open-air locations for performance and socialising, there’s space to stretch your legs and your mind, and to relax when you need to.
Home to our Theatre Workshops and located near to Bath city centre, this space has been designed and built to industry standard, replicating the real-world production process of staging theatre performances to allow you to work and study in a relevant environment.
Our state-of-the-art campus in the heart of Bath next to the River Avon. This old furniture factory has been lovingly restored and is now a purpose-built space for students. The open-plan building has technical workshops surrounded by open, flexible studio spaces, as well as large, open social areas.
As an Adobe Creative Campus, we’re part of a select group of colleges and universities that are actively advancing digital literacy skills throughout our curricula to give our students an edge in the competitive modern workplace.

LOCKSBROOK CAMPUS OLDFIELD PARKWelcome to beautiful Bath! We’re proud to be based in a UNESCO World Heritage City that boasts lots of landmarks such as the Roman Baths, the Royal Crescent and the Jane Austen Centre to name a few. As you explore your new home away from home, you’ll see Bath has an amazing variety of independent cafes and shops that will become your new go-to spots. Here are some of our favourites to get you started:
Walcot Street is widely considered to be the oldest commercial street in Bath and is home to a range of independent traders. Located at opposite ends of the street, The Yellow Shop and Jack and Danny’s are both packed full of vintage fashion, perfect for when you want to refresh your wardrobe. The Walcot Antique and Flea Market takes place every Saturday and the wide variety of stalls mean it’s a great place to find a hidden gem!
For literature lovers, Bath has some great options. Mr B’s Emporium has been named the UK’s best independent bookshop twice since it opened and even has a reading nook on the top floor, where you can get stuck into your new purchases.
Located behind Bath Abbey, Topping and Company resides in a Georgian building formerly known as the Friends Meeting House. It features a gallery, multiple floors filled with books and offers free tea and coffee to its customers!
No matter where you are in the city centre, you’re never far from a great independent coffee shop in Bath. There’s far too many to list them all but some of our favourites are Picnic Coffee, The Columbian Company, Society Café and Mjölk Café.
If you’re looking for a way to pass a few hours, we highly recommend checking out Thirsty Meeples. They have an extensive library of board games to choose from and the friendly staff are always on hand to recommend something new. Not to mention they serve delicious food and drink for you to enjoy while you game.
For tasty food on the go, you can’t get much better than Chaiwalla. They serve delicious and affordable Indian street food and always have a queue outside, which is how you know it’s good. When it comes to dinner, we recommend trying Bath Pizza Co. Located inside Green Park Station, their heated terrace area is the perfect place to catch up with friends over a drink and delicious freshly made pizza. They also have a large selection of vegan and gluten free options so there is something for everyone. Their sister business, Green Park Brasserie, offers seasonal, local dishes and has live jazz, funk and swing music four nights a week.
There’s always something to see or do in Bath and it’s home to many festivals and cultural events throughout the year.
If you’re a movie fan, why not see what’s on at The Little Theatre? The cinema was built in the 1930s and despite refurbishments has retained the charm and welcoming warmth it’s always had.
For a more luxurious film watching experience, Tivoli Cinema allows you to choose delicious food and drink and have it delivered to your seat. The large sofa seats ensure that you watch the latest blockbusters in style. More interested in music and comedy? Komedia is Bath’s leading live entertainment venue and is inspired by European cabaret theatre, allowing you to tuck into a meal whilst watching the show.
Happy exploring!
The Students’ Union (SU) is here to help you get the most out of your university experience. Whether it’s joining one of their many clubs and societies, being the voice for your fellow students, or volunteering in the local community, there are loads of ways you can get involved with your Students’ Union.
With over 70 different clubs and societies for you to choose from, forging life-long friendships and having some downtime from your studies has never been easier – or more fun.
At Bath Spa Students’ Union, you will be sure to find something to suit your interests, whether that lies in team sports such as rugby or netball, or in our creative industries, baking or musical theatre.
The Students’ Union is a democratic organisation; it is your Union and they are led by you.
You vote for your representatives and hold them to account and you determine Union policy and overall direction. There are lots of ways you can have your say: you can stand and vote in elections, you can submit a policy idea to the Democracy and Scrutiny Committee, you can propose referenda and you can participate in the annual All Student Members Meeting.
As well as making a real difference to the lives of people within the University and local community, volunteering is a great way to develop new skills alongside your degree, have fun, and meet new people. Regardless of how much time you have to spare, the Students’ Union has a wide range of volunteering opportunities for you.
Your Sabbatical Officers
Sabbatical Officers (or ‘Sabbs’) lead your Students’ Union. They are Bath Spa students who are elected by the student body each year and are paid to work fulltime representing you. Each is responsible for a different area of the Union’s activities and they are members of the Union’s Board of Trustees.
The Sabbs are your primary representatives and their main role is to listen to you and understand what you want from your Union and your University and then try to make that happen.
Visit www.bathspasu.co.uk to find out more.
Vice President Welfare and Community
Laura Bold
When were you elected?
Last year I campaigned for VP Education and won, so I served in that role last academic year. In March 2023 I campaigned for VP Welfare and Community and won, which is what I’ll be doing this academic year.
What did you study at Bath Spa and when?
I studied Film Studies and Creative Writing (2017-2022, with some covid related time off in the middle). I haven’t graduated - I have my Diploma of Higher Education and don’t have plans to finish my final year.
Why did you decide to run for Sabb?
During my year as VP Education, I felt myself dipping my toes into projects that were more in the Welfare remit, so when the student elections came around again, I decided that it was time for a change.
What will you bring to the role?
Being a first-year officer is weird; there’s so much to learn about the SU and so many relationships to build with staff. This year I’m jumping straight into the role with a preexisting understanding of SU life, ready to complete my projects and work with the new cohort of students.
Do you have any fun facts about yourself?
I have an allotment! This year was my first growing season and it went really well - despite the slugs getting to my cauliflowers before I could.
What can students contact you about and what’s your email?
My remit includes working with Student Wellbeing Services, Accommodation, the Student Community Partnership, as well as being the lead on our protected student networks. I’m happy to be contacted about anything welfare or community related, and can signpost if you aren’t sure where to go. You can reach me at vpcommunity@bathspa.ac.uk or the whole team at sabbs@bathspa.ac.uk. We also have an Instagram account - @bathspasabbs - and Facebook profiles.
Graduated 2023
I was elected by the student cohort of 22/23. That was during the third and final year of my degree, Creative Writing and Education Studies combined award, so I’ve just graduated! Expectations of my life as a uni student were completely turned on their head by a virus that shall remain nameless... and I saw how much everyone around me was affected by the countless social side-effects of it. So I began to unconsciously take note, pondering how I could help. Being part of the Sabbatical Officer team seemed like a pretty good way to do that!
When were you elected?
Last year I was the VP Welfare and Community officer and decided to rerun in the by-election as VP Education. Essentially, Laura and I swapped roles!
What did you study at Bath Spa and when?
I studied English Literature at Bath Spa between 20192022 and loved it!
Why did you decide to run for Sabb?
My first year as VP Welfare and Community was a lot of fun, despite some challenges. The role was incredibly rewarding and an honour to be a part of! I felt that one year as a Sabb was too short and I do have plans I would like to bring into action for this academic year.
What will you bring to the role?
Without sounding too job interview Q and A type, I think this year will be about building and continuing positive connections with staff and students. A lot of difference can be made by speaking to people on a day-to-day basis to find common ground.
Do you have any fun facts about yourself?
I have a metal rod and five bolts inside my right leg because of a trampoline accident... not a particularly ‘fun’ fact but it’s something that people react to like ‘ouch?!’ or ‘Do you beep at airport security scanners?’
What can students contact you about and what’s your email?
I’m happy to be contacted on anything academic or course-related, issues around decolonisation, or even student life on vpeducation@bathspa.ac.uk
Through my job as President, I’d like to bring a sense of unity and comfort to students and staff by having open conversations about what is wanted and needed. I hope that we can all work together to maintain and improve the community we have here at Bath Spa University that I know is full of kind, creative and fun people.
A little bit more about me - I love dogs, all kinds of art and I can’t keep myself away from activism. My experience here wouldn’t have been the same without the group that my friends and I formed in 2021 to campaign under Amnesty International UK.
Contact me via my email su-president@bathspa ac.uk, on Instagram @bathspasabbs or on Facebook at ‘Jasmine RB Bath Spa SU’. My role covers everything from University Governance, to decolonisation and sustainability, to buses and laundry, to just chatting about what students want to see at our university, so I’m keen to hear from everyone!
Elise Booth
When were you elected?
I was elected in March and began the role in July.
What did you study at Bath Spa and when?
I studied BA (Hons) Film and Screen Studies here at BSU 2019-2022, and then stayed on another year to complete my Masters in Marketing and Brand Management.
Why did you decide to run for Sabb?
I decided to run to be a Sabb as I felt really passionate about boosting the ‘Spirit of Spa’, and have enjoyed the last 4 years here so much – particularly due to my engagement with the Students’ Union.
What will you bring to the role?
I aim to actively represent and advocate for the diverse needs and interests of the student body, while fostering a vibrant and inclusive campus community through effective communication, impactful initiatives, and dedicated leadership.
Do you have any fun facts about yourself?
As a student I founded the Cocktail Society in my first year, and we went on to win Society of the Year 2022 and raise money for local charities in our seasonal balls, open to the whole student body.
What can students contact you about and what’s your email?
If you have any queries related to societies, events, volunteering or career opportunities, you can contact me at vpopportunities@bathspa.ac.uk . I’m also available through my SU Facebook account, and I’d be honoured to attend any student-led events that I’m invited to this year!
Staff from across the University and the Students’ Union are committed to continuing to work towards a more equal, diverse, and inclusive Bath Spa community. Here is a snapshot of some of the positive changes our Student Services and Equalities teams have made together over the last year.
Over the last year we have run a number of workshops with students and staff to hear their views on what they think should be included in our four-year action plan when it comes to equality.
As a result, for the next four years we will be focusing on moving from ‘equality’ to ‘equity’ and have come up with the following objectives. Keep an eye out in the next few months as these will be publicly available in more detail:
1. People: “Ensure we build a community that reflects the world we live in”.
2. Curriculum: “Implementing our decolonisation action plan and embedding equity into our curriculums to create curriculums that reflect, challenge and inspire our student body”.
3. Spaces: “Ensuring our spaces are accessible, safe and diverse to comfortably inhabit our diverse body of students and staff”.
4. Embedding: “Embedding equity in all elements of student and staff life at Bath Spa”.
5. Enabling: “Utilising our voice to embed equity in our activities”.
Want to help run campaigns and events, meet new people and even influence the University at a strategic level? If you’re a student contact bathspasu@bathspa.ac.uk and if you’re a staff member edi@bathspa.ac.uk
We have staff equality networks that are chaired by members of staff at Bath Spa and are open for any Bath Spa Staff member to join. They create equality events, change policy, meet and solve issues and are a great space to meet other colleagues. Currently we have:
• BathSpa+ (for our LGBTQIA+ staff)
• Disability Staff Network (DSN)
• Grassroots Equality Staff Network
• Global Inclusivity Network (GIN)
• Neurodiversity Staff Network
• Parent and Carers Network
• Women’s Staff Network
You can join these networks by going to the Staff Network Sulis page or email edi@bathspa.ac.uk
Hi! I’m Meg, I use she/her pronouns and I’m the current Equalities Officer at Bath Spa University. My role sits in Human Resources and I create equality-based events for staff and students. I also work with staff networks on equality projects, listen to concerns, and edit and create equality policies.
I studied English Literature with Drama at Bath Spa, and graduated in 2018. I then started a Master's in Arts Management which I completed this year. Between my Master's and graduating, I was elected as the Vice President Welfare and Community in the Students’ Union, which is where I fell in love with working on equality and diversity and figured it could be something I could pursue.
As a queer, neurodivergent woman myself, I want to be able to create a community where everyone can thrive and feel comfortable to speak out when something needs to change. This is exactly why I love working in equality, as I get to speak and meet so many wonderful people who have so many great ideas on how we can make change!
I’m always up for listening to new ideas on events and networks or ideas on how we can make Bath Spa an inclusive environment, so please do get in touch and we can grab a tea (and cake) and chat! You can email me at m.robertson3@bathspa.ac.uk
The MyBathSpa App was launched just one year ago. It’s a one stop shop for campus life and enables students and staff to perform a number of actions at the click of a button. Here are 10 things students can do using the app:
1. ACCESS YOUR TIMETABLE
Once timetables are available you can access them via the timetable tile in the app. You can use this tile to stay on track of lectures and seminars and remember to check-in to your classes.
2. ORDER FOOD FROM ONCAMPUS CATERING OUTLETS
You can order food in the MyBathSpa App straight to wherever you are on campus! Simply click on the food tile in the app and quickly see all of your catering options
3. ACCESS THE STUDENT NEWSLETTER
Our bi-weekly newsletters for students are easily found on the app and can be searched - you can find out everything happening at the University! You can find out about events across all campuses, updates from the different University departments and learn about opportunities available.
4. TRACK THE U5 BUS
The bus tile has information about the U5 route, the current timetable, tickets and discounts and most importantly a way to track the live U5 on its route.
5. ANSWER QUICK POLLS
Quick polls are a great tool for the University to hear from its student body in a short and snappy way. These polls can influence key University decisions, so they are well worth engaging with!
The ‘Need Help’ tile for our students is incredibly important. You can find Security’s number, how to access 24/7 wellbeing support, housing support and information on the safe taxi scheme.
The MyBathSpa App gives you access to University Services on your phone or computer. It brings together news, information and updates in one place.
You will need the app to check in to your classes and see your timetable!
You can download the app from the App Store, Google Play, or access it on your computer at my.bathspa.ac.uk
10.
This tile allows students and staff to easily book a space on campus, whether it’s for a project, group work or a meeting.
Unitu is our student feedback platform, it’s the place where students can ask questions, raise ideas, offer praise and let us know of any issues they may be having.
Find out about the SU societies and sports clubs, upcoming events, their advice centre and much more.
These ‘virtual flyers’ appear in the homepage and change regularly with upcoming events and opportunities available to the Bath Spa community. You can click on them to access more information. Get in touch with studentcomms@bathspa.ac.uk and the team can help promote relevant events via the app.
Each year, the VC Awards recognise outstanding individual and team achievements at Bath Spa. This annual celebration recognises the outstanding contributions made by teams and individuals across the University with certificates, prizes and University-wide applause, and the ceremony was live streamed for online viewers.
The awards were presented by Vice-Chancellor Professor Sue Rigby and 2022 Students’ Union President Marianne Evans. Congratulations to all of our winners – who knows, it could be you taking home the award next year!

“I’m so grateful to my students for nominating me and very moved by it.”
Adeyinka Akinrinade landed a pretty big gig earlier this year when she appeared as “Alesha” in Riches, a six-part primetime ITV family drama.
The British drama show was created by Abby Ajayi - one of the writers of the hit American legal thriller, How To Get Away With Murder. Riches follows Stephen Richards, a self-made man, who has built a cosmetics empire and has become a strong advocate for Blackowned businesses. After he has a heart attack, there is a fight for control over his empire and his family's secrets come to the forefront.
Adeyinka played Alesha Richards, the first-born child from Stephen’s second marriage who has always been underestimated by her family, but has a burgeoning career as an Instagram beauty influencer. When she is given a key role in the family business, she finally has the power - and Adeyinka had the opportunity to bring this character to life in all her glory.
We caught up with Adeyinka to find out how she went from being a budding performer studying at Bath Spa University’s Newton Park campus, to a star who has featured in shows such as Top Boy, Grantchester, A Discovery of Witches and now, Riches. Read our interview to find out about her journey to small-screen success.
How did you react when you first found out you were cast in Riches?
I found out about Riches when I was coming out of a hot yoga class. I finished a class and I had six missed calls – I thought this is either really good news or bad news.
My agent said, ‘You’ve been cast as Alesha in Riches!’ I absolutely broke down in tears in my car. I was so happy and so grateful. It’s been absolutely amazing on set. We’ve just bonded so much as a family. It literally feels like we’re brothers and sisters. It’s been such a lovely experience.
What experience did you gain at Bath Spa University that is relevant to what you’re doing now?
I learnt so much whilst studying at Bath Spa, but the biggest thing was how varied the course was. As well as developing and learning about ourselves as actors, we also got to learn about other roles in the industry. It was brilliant to have a go at behind the scene roles, such as producing, set design or camera operating (to name a few) because these were jobs I didn’t have much of an idea or experience of. But it was so insightful because it was my degree that made me realise I also wanted to go into Creative Producing.
As soon as I graduated, I actually didn’t go into acting right away. I went straight into being a Creative Producer. I produced my first short film called ’NĀCA’ with some friends who had also just graduated and moved back to our hometown.
I then went on to be the Festival Director of the British Urban Film Festival for a few years. Here I programmed short and feature films nationally and internationally. I’ve never watched so many films in one sitting before! It was amazing getting to see the wide range of films that were submitted to the festival. I went on to develop another short film that was funded by the British Film Institute called ‘The Lost Land Girl’.
Then I started to miss acting and went back to pursuing that passion which was when my agent first saw me perform and signed me. Since then I’ve performed at The National Theatre, Orange Tree Theatre, Theatre 503 and Paines Plough Roundabout.
As a performer, the thing that inspires me is the world in which we live. That sounds so cliche, but that’s where we get our stories from, the people we meet, the places we go, the experiences we have. That’s where stories are made. So I really make an effort to chat to people when I can, experience new things often and use that in my storytelling whether that be as an actor or producer.
I feel very lucky, my agents are absolutely incredible and have supported me so much over the years, but a week in an actor’s shoes is never the same. Your journey is so up and down, sometimes you can get loads of auditions in one go, and other times it can be a bit quieter.
I make sure I keep myself busy by going to acting classes, reading loads of plays and scripts and watching theatre shows. But it’s also important to do non-acting things as well, so I always make sure to go to the gym regularly. I absolutely love cooking and baking, so I’m always attempting to bake something new - but it doesn’t always turn out like the recipe!
I’m not just an actor, I produce as well, so in-between auditioning and acting jobs I work as a freelance producer. At the moment I’m developing two short films and a theatre show. Is there anyone you’d like to thank for helping you achieve your ambitions so far?
The list of people I would like to thank is near to endless, from my agents to my friends, they have been an incredible support system. If I had the time I would list each one personally and say why they are amazing, but I’d actually like to thank Chris Jury and Sam Grogan who were my lecturers while I was at Bath Spa. I learnt so much from Chris about the film and TV industry and he actually inspired me to become a producer. Sam really pushed us as actors during the first year, and I learnt so much about myself as an actor and I definitely think it made me better because of it. So I’d really like to thank them in particular as they definitely made an impact on my career.
Do you have any advice for a budding performer currently studying at Bath Spa?
Be brave and open to trying a variety of things while you’re studying. Say yes (within means) to things, even if you’ve never done it before or don’t know much about it, just dive in. University is the place to try, fail and play. It’s okay to get things wrong, you’re learning. As long as you give it go, you never know where you might end up. I thought I was strictly going to be an actor and just study acting, but I left Bath Spa University knowing so much about producing and now do both. Your opportunities really are limitless.
You can check out Adeyinka’s IMDb page for a full list of her TV appearances. Adeyinka is on Instagram: @adeyinkaakinrinade

It feels like home and a family here. It’s really nice to walk into that environment, especially with it being my first season here. It’s a fantastic partnership because on both sides they really care about the community.”

“The day was filled with so much joy - from walking in the march to speaking to people at the Downs, the rain definitely didn’t stop us. Pride allows us to celebrate queer joy, creativity and community, but is also vital to remember that Pride is still a protest and we are very much committed to continuing our support for the LGBTQIA+ community.”

Bath Spa University made its Bristol Pride Day debut on Saturday 8 July 2023 as a group of colleagues, students and alumni joined thousands of others in the annual Parade March.
The Bristol celebrations have become known as one of the largest Pride events in the whole of the UK and last year the festival welcomed 40,000 people to the city on Pride Day alone.
This year, Bath Spa had a pop-up stand at the festival where colleagues gave out Pridethemed temporary tattoos and pin badges to complement its sponsorship of the Queer Vision Film Festival element of this year’s Bristol Pride.
As part of Mental Health Awareness Week 2023, Bath Spa University clebrated its very special four-legged friends, in recognition of the combined 300 hours of service that its Care Dogs have given to support the mental health and wellbeing of thousands of students over the last three years.
Launched in partnership with the charity Canine Concern in early 2020, the pilot pet therapy scheme for students has developed at a pace due to its popularity. The dogs have been the star attractions at petting sessions and scheduled dog walks with students across the University’s Bath-based campuses. They even have their very own “Care Dog of the Year” category in the prestigious Bath Spa University VC Awards.
Since September 2021, Bath Spa University has taught over 500 students the sector-specific skills needed to start their dream careers through a Skills Bootcamp. Over half of these students have secured new roles in tech since completing their short course.
Following this success, Bath Spa University secured funding for five new Skills Bootcamps that were rolled out in January 2023, in partnership with the West of England Combined Authority. These new courses target two of the biggest skills gaps identified within the West of England: environmental data science and digital skills within the education sector.
Launched as a partnership between Bath Spa University and 3SG, Bath Social Impact Network is the first of its kind in Bath and North East Somerset (B&NES), aimed at bringing together groups and individuals specifically from social enterprises with a shared purpose of improving and growing the social economy in B&NES.
Professor Andy Salmon, Pro-Vice Chancellor External at Bath Spa University said: “We aim to bring together those working for good in the region because we are stronger as one. Contemporary challenges are complex, and opportunities will only be unlocked by collaboration across traditional borders. Our message is clear - we’re here for you, in mutually supportive environments, journeying together, one idea at a time.
“Importantly, this network is a first for Bath - there are networks for the third sector and charities, but not one specifically for social enterprises. Working with 3SG, we are committed to addressing this gap and we’re excited about the positive impact that we know will come from bringing together great minds in this special city.”
Professor Sue Rigby, Vice Chancellor of Bath Spa University, officially opened the 10th Anniversary event of the Forest of Imagination at the Assembly Rooms in Bath.
The Forest of Imagination was masterminded a decade ago by House of Imagination, Grant Associates, and Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios in partnership with Bath Spa University. Over the last 10 years, more than 60,000 visitors have attended and over 100,000 interacted with the contemporary arts event online.
The month-long anniversary celebration event was open to the public from 14 June to 14 July 2023 and invited adults and schoolchildren to ‘assemble in the forest’ as its theme, and connect with nature in a host of imaginative ways
Bath Spa University has been nominated for two UK Social Enterprise Awards, beating more than 400 entries to make the shortlist for the UK Social Enterprise of the Year and the Community-Based Social Enterprise Award.
Social enterprises are mission-led businesses that reinvest or donate most of their profits for a social or environmental purpose. Bath Spa is one of more than 100,000 social enterprises in the UK and is being recognised for a number of projects and initiatives including its Skills Bootcamps, partnership with Youth Connect South West, Forest of Imagination and the launch of the Bath Social Impact Network (BSIN).
Hannah Whiting, Business Development Manager, said: “We are thrilled to be finalists for not one but two categories at the Social Enterprise Awards 2023. To be recognised alongside the other wonderful Social Enterprises who have been shortlisted really shows the value of our work. As a university we strive to support not just our students but our community locally, nationally and internationally, working to make the world a better place.”
Winners will be revealed at the UK Social Enterprise Awards ceremony on Thursday 30 November.
We
We are continuing to add to our credentials as a sustainable university with two nominations for the 2023 Green Gown UK and Ireland Awards.
Bath Spa is one of only 11 universities nominated in the 2030 Climate Action category for its Phase 1 Decarbonisation project, and Sustainability Manager Julian Greaves is one of just 15 finalists in the Sustainability Champion category. Talking about the nominations, Julian said: “Developing our carbon reduction management programme was what I came here to do, so I’m happy to see it through.”
Winners will be announced at an awards ceremony in Liverpool on 30 November.
Bath Spa was proudly presented with not one but two Creative Bath Awards 2023 trophies designed by its very own final year BA (Hons) Product and Furniture Design student, Bo Neville.
The University won the award for ‘Creativity for Good’ in special recognition of its short courses designed to help those looking to reskill into a new career, start their own business or explore an interest.
Academic lead at The Studio and Professor of Cultural and Creative Industries, Kate Pullinger, also took home the award for Inspirational Person at the ceremony.
As part of a twinning partnership launched in the summer of 2022, Bath Spa University and the International University of Economics and Humanities (IUEH) in Ukraine announced the start of a joint project in March 2023 called, ‘I Vote for Peace’: Collaboration and Compassion in a Time of War.
Funding awarded by the UK–Ukraine R&I Twinning Grants Scheme was used to facilitate the initiative which is underpinned by the ethos of education, solidarity, and compassion. Drawing on shared academic interests in education, humanities, and business, throughout the project Bath Spa University aims to:
• Strengthen IUEH’s research and innovation capacity by devising a strategy and action plan.
• Support collaborative research in education and humanities.
• Offer research-skills training for IUEH faculty.
• Develop a leadership training programme for IUEH faculty.
• Enhance the public-facing work of the Museum of Peace in improving wellbeing among children and young people.
Bath Spa University was named as the 18th greenest university in the UK, and third in the South West, in the latest People and Planet University League Table.
This year’s impressive ranking has earned Bath Spa a first-class degree-style classification in the league of a total 153 institutions, climbing 13 places since 2021. The University was also awarded a special rosette for meeting its carbon emission reduction targets, at a time when the majority of the UK higher education sector has failed to do so, according to the findings.
Among its highest results, Bath Spa scored 100 per cent for its environmental auditing and management systems, 85 per cent for carbon management, and 78 per cent for carbon reduction.
In the summer of 2023, 10 students from Bath Spa University, and 10 students from Falmouth University, successfully completed their first five-day Porthleven Prize residency which is now in its 10th year.
A lucky five from each University then went on to be chosen by judges to complete a 14-day residency at the Porthleven Lifeboat Art Studio.
Every year, the Porthleven Prize offers students across all year groups and disciplines the opportunity to work together to create an exhibition. The interdisciplinary nature of the prize has enabled unique collaborations and insight into the work and practices of our creative community. We can’t wait to see who takes part this year!
Bath Spa University was awarded the Social Enterprise Gold Mark in recognition of its outstanding work as a social enterprise, making it the first university in the south west to achieve this standard, and fifth in the whole of the UK. The University achieved this accolade in recognition of its commitment to putting people, communities and the environment at the heart of its work. Bath Spa demonstrated Outstanding Practice across areas which are central to social enterprise excellence including governance, stakeholder engagement, business ethics, financial transparency and social impact.
Former teacher and Bath Spa University MA Design (Textiles) graduate Kamal Ali has used his professional creativity to solve an age-old problem, by inventing the world’s first patented interactive prayer mat.
Kamal’s motivation to create the mat, called My Salah Mat®, was first brought to life by his son, Hamza, who, as an infant, was struggling to understand where to place his hands, knees, forehead and nose when praying using a traditional prayer mat to perform Salah – a daily prayer practised by Muslims, five times a day.
With the help of the Welsh Government, Kamal is now looking to branch out into new markets including Australia and India.
The University received particular praise for its emphasis on providing employability opportunities for students, as well as linking students to the needs and opportunities within the local economy. Another highlight was how the University creates additional social and economic impact in the city of Bath with examples including running fully funded short courses for local residents and providing an incubator space for start-up businesses.
Rosie Lee Hood, a BA (Hons) Product and Furniture Design student studying at Bath Spa University, was awarded the Creative Conscience Ethical Designers’ Award in the prestigious New Designers Awards 2023.
Every year, the New Designers Awards invite key industry leaders to select their rising stars of tomorrow who have created work in response to particular themes such as sustainability, mental health and diversity.
In recognition of her versatile use of natural wool, Rosie was awarded her ethical accolade for the design and creation of a collection of three lamps with woollen shades – The Bluefaced Leicester, The Wensleydale and The Romney – also known by their project name, ‘Floccus’. Through her work, she was committed to addressing the idea that wool has become a less desirable and valuable material over the last 50 years, inspired by the fact that it now costs less to buy per kilo than it costs to farm it.
Rosie said: “My course has also allowed me to really dive into who I am creatively and explore my passions whilst equipping me with the practical skills needed to do something like this. It has given me confidence as a designer but also allowed me to work and learn alongside so many other amazing creatives which is invaluable.”

Bath Spa University London and New City College’s existing partnership has grown to develop a ground-breaking new University Centre based in the vibrant and central location of Hackney in London.
The New City College University Centre will enable thousands of learners from a range of backgrounds and ages to change their lives and life chances, while delivering on both London’s and the nation’s skills agendas.
The jointly-operated University Centre will offer a blend of career enhancing degree programmes, short courses, degree apprenticeships, business networks, and continuing professional development programmes with accompanying accreditations.
Professor Sue Rigby, Vice-Chancellor of Bath Spa University, said: “This innovative project will take our existing partnership with New City College to the next level. It will provide opportunities for learners based in Bath and London to collaborate, focusing on the personal growth and aspirations of learners, building their confidence and creating a student experience that is inclusive, challenging and enabling.”
Bath Spa University’s Locksbrook Campus – home to the Bath School of Art, Film and Media, and Bath School of Design – scored a hat-trick taking home the ‘Overall Winner’, ‘Education Winner’ and ‘Sustainability Winner’ accolades at the prestigious Schüco Excellence Awards 2023.
Winning three Schüco Excellence Awards serves as fitting recognition of the collaboration between Grimshaw Architects and specialist façade contractor, Structura, in transforming the building into an exceptional example of a modern educational establishment – one that inspires the delivery and learning of degrees such as BA (Hons) Architecture and BA (Hons) Interior Design.
Tegan Vincent-Cooke, a 22-yearold BA (Hons) Film, TV and Digital Production graduate from Bath Spa with an uncontrollable and unpredictable neurological condition that causes her entire body to spasm, has backed a charity’s call to urge the Government to establish a Neuro Taskforce.
As a baby, Tegan, who is originally from Bristol, was diagnosed with dystonic cerebral palsy, an incurable condition which causes involuntary muscle contractions and movements. Her experience has prompted her to support a new campaign for others just like her, launched by The Neurological Alliance, which is calling on the Government to bring about much needed change
for people affected by neurological conditions.
Tegan – who is also an International Para Dressage Rider – said: “There needs to be more support focussed on exercise and movement and the mental health side of things, not necessarily counselling, but it would be helpful to have someone to talk to when I need it. I support the charity because they support change by speaking up and helping individuals, that’s why I got involved.”
To keep up to date with Tegan’s success after Bath Spa, you can find her on TikTok, where she has amassed more than 450,000 followers and continues to campaign for the rights of others.

June 2023 marked 10 years since the Teacher Assessment in Primary Science (TAPS) project, based at Bath Spa University, was set up to provide support, resources and learning materials to aid the nation’s teaching and assessment of science in primary and early years settings.
A 10-year anniversary event was held at Bath Spa’s Newton Park campus on Tuesday 20 June 2023 to mark the milestone. Sixty attendees including university colleagues, primary school teachers, and those from science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) organisations enjoyed an afternoon of celebrations.
Since its launch, TAPS has worked with 93 project schools and delivered face-to-face training to approximately 9,700 teachers. The scheme’s informative videos have been viewed more than 20,200 times and TAPS resources, which are available free online, have been downloaded 232,000 times in 123 countries around the world. TAPS is now an accepted model of best practice in teacher assessment and has aided thousands of children’s learning.
Bath Academy of Art-trained sculptor Veronica Ryan
OBE was named as the winner of the Turner Prize in December 2022.
Having studied for a BA in Fine Art at the Corsham Court campus-based Bath Academy of Art (now Bath Spa University’s Bath School of Art, Film and Media, at Locksbrook Campus) from 1975-1978, Veronica went on to establish an internationally revered
exhibition profile, winning numerous awards across the globe.
High praise for her work came from the Turner Prize judging panel for “the personal and poetic way she extends the language of sculpture” and the “noticeable shift in her use of space, colour and scale both in gallery and civic spaces”.
Most books, in their simplest form, are words on a page, designed to get their readers thinking. Some even have the ability to make time stand still while transporting you to a whole new dimension.
Every once in a while, however, you stumble upon a book that captures more than just your imagination. In fact, for some, there is that ‘one book’ that has captured their head and their heart, with positively lifechanging consequences.
If you are yet to discover your ‘one book’, as part of World Book Day 2023 celebrations, Bath Spa University staff shared theirs. Who knows - their recommendation might just change your life!
SUE RIGBY, VICE-CHANCELLOR
“It is a description of plankton, by the leader of the first expedition to study it, a brilliant and passionate scientist.”
LUCY STONE, COMMUNICATIONS MANAGER
“I first read this book when training to be a meditation teacher in India seven years ago. It changed how I view life and made me realise how we can be overpowered by the stories we tell ourselves. It was a case of right book, right moment.”
MEGAN ROBERSTON, EQUALITY OFFICER
“The whole book is such a simple concept but it made me laugh and cry throughout. It makes you think about your life, and how the smallest decisions could change your entire path, it is unbelievably beautiful.”
MARK LANGLEY, HEAD OF BATH SCHOOL OF MUSIC AND PERFORMING ARTS
“Once you understand how language works from the brain outwards you understand so much more about thought, about expression, and about thinking.”
COELHO ZAINAB RAHMAN, SENIOR COMMUNICATIONS AND PR OFFICER
“This was a book I first read 20 years ago, while on holiday in Spain awaiting my GCSE results. The themes of change, resilience and the magic of the unknown have stuck with me ever since, and continue to inspire me to this day.”
GEORGINA ANDREWS, PROVOST OF BATH SPA UNIVERSITY
“Sparked my interest in the Law, but also fascinated by how novels translate, and the glimpse into another era in another country. It also stretched my vocabulary - I was a kid at the time and still remember having to look up the word 'incongruous'. That was my favourite word for a while…”
ADELE MILTON, BATH SCHOOLS OF ART AND DESIGN RECEPTIONIST
“I feel like women in my generation were brought up believing that feminism had won and everything was fixed and the world was our oyster. As a result, we stopped fighting, we dropped the feminist ball and the whole fight took a few steps back as a result. This book was the beginning of me realising that wasn't the case and have been a fully paid up, strident feminist ever since. I'm happy to see the next generations are staying very much on the case and are evolving the movement into a more inclusive space.”
STEPHEN MOSS, MA IN NATURE AND TRAVEL WRITING PROGRAMME LEADER
“This novel, by Allsop, a celebrated broadcaster and journalist, is about teenage boys saving a rare breeding bird, the Little Ringed Plover. When I read it as a teenager, they were breeding near my suburban home, in "that messy limbo that is neither town nor country”. It inspired me to write about birds.”
MALCOM GLADWELL KATIE FRIEDLANDER-BOSS, FASHION AND SUSTAINABILITY DEVELOPMENT LEADER
“It allowed me to see that it is the small things, combined in the right way at the right time that have the power to create lasting impactful change and that nothing will last forever.”
MELISSA MULHALL, PRO-VICECHANCELLOR ACADEMIC PLANNING
“This collection has travelled with me from childhood to adulthood. For me these stories represent my absolute joy and love of reading, the power stories have to transport me into different worlds and the lives of those within them as well as evoke memories of my childhood of reading late into the night with a torch! A love of reading is a love story that will last my lifetime.”
MACKENZIE, MARKETING, COMMUNICATIONS AND DIGITAL COORDINATOR
“The language made me fall in love with literature and it's the reason I went to university to study writing.”
RACHEL GARMAN, STUDENT EXPERIENCE PROJECT MANAGER
“We were taught how to use it to win in competitive racing, and it’s used by the British Cycling team to visualise winning. Control your chimp to access your computer…it's quite fun.”
AMETHYST BIGGS, MARKETING, COMMUNICATIONS AND DIGITAL COORDINATOR
“I read this for the first time when I was doing my MA in Creative Writing at Bath Spa, and fell in love with Nabokov's writing. He used language in such beautiful and clever ways - even when he was writing about an absolute monster like Humbert Humbert - and you just can't help but be seduced by it.”
LAURA BOLD, STUDENTS' UNION VICE PRESIDENT OF EDUCATION
“I think Bechdel was instrumental in me coming out when I did. I started reading her books after two people in my lifeunrelated to each other - asked 'have you heard of Alison Bechdel?' in the same week. Life = changed. This book was a catalyst into me understanding myself and my relationships, and one of my earliest forays into psychoanalysis which pulled me into a fascination with peoples internal worlds. If I had not had Bechdel, Winterson, Lorde (this list could go on) with me throughout lockdown, I don't believe I would be here today with this confidence or with the haircut I have now.”
NEETU KARWAL, STUDENTS' UNION VICE PRESIDENT OF WELFARE AND COMMUNITY
“It is a gothic take on fairy tales that people probably read as a child. It highlights the grotesque and the beautiful. As well as being a massive book on feminism.”
BY
DANIEL DEFOE GUYROBINSON, CATERING ASSISTANT
“It is a classic, a great story about Christianity. Robinson thinks he is alone, until he sees a footprint and then meets Man Friday. It is a wonderful read, and I dip into it every night.”
STEINBECK SUZANNE HARRIS, BATH SPA LIVE AUDIENCE EXPERIENCE AND DEVELOPMENT LEADER
“Dad recommended it to me when I was about 14, moving from children's books to more adult reading. (No Young Adult books in those days!) It taught me that talking about books can be the way we talk about ourselves.”
CHARLOTTE SENIOR, SENIOR CAMPAIGN OFFICER
"It opened my eyes to life in Afghanistan for women under Taliban rule and is based on a true story. I read a few more books by the same author which helped spark my interest in volunteering resulting in me teaching English to refugees."
SARA GALLAGHER, HEAD OF STUDENT WELLBEING SERVICES
“I read this book when I was about 16 and at a time when I was developing my political beliefs. The concepts within the book, which include state benefits, control and ideology, opened my eyes to feminism, which informed my early steps as a student activist and involvement in student politics.”
O'BRIEN
SOPHIE COLMAN, MARKETING, COMMUNICATIONS AND DIGITAL COORDINATOR
“The way O’Brien uses trauma theory and an unreliable narrator to describe the events of the Vietnam War is something I’d never seen before. It makes you want to reread the book over and over to find out what the real truth is!”
JOHN CURRY, SENIOR LECTURER IN COMPUTING
“In The Lord of the Rings the weakest, most insignificant characters, hobbits, go on to achieve great things. It inspired me to always remember I have no idea which of the students in front of me will go on to achieve great things. Years later one of my 'hobbits' is in charge of building submarines for the Royal Navy (and she still wears her pink bobble hat when it is cold on the dockside).”
ANDY SALMON, PRO-VICE CHANCELLOR EXTERNAL
“For the first time in my life, here was someone who knew exactly who I was and why. I missed my bus, and the next. He's been like a marvellous grandparent ever since, advising, cajoling, teasing, and loving. For better, for worse, without him I'd never have become me.”
