WELCOME Welcome to Third Space 2017, the annual Bath Spa Dance degree shows. This year’s programme includes performances and presentations ranging from solo and group choreography and short dance films. Dance at Bath Spa provides emerging artists with an opportunity to immerse themselves in an exciting and challenging artistic environment. The programmes are focused on helping each individual to build the skills that are needed to become a creative, versatile and articulate dance practitioner. We hope you enjoy the work. The Dance Team
MONDAY 27 MARCH 2017 Response 1.15pm – University Theatre Group performance choreographed by Natalie Hyde Sweaty palms, fidgety feet and awkward eye contact. They say that receiving a compliment should be as rewarding as being given money. So why I am stood here, uncertain about whether to laugh or hide my face? A performance exploring the impact that compliments can have upon our bodies.

Beauty or Beast? 2.30pm – University Theatre, Female Changing Rooms Solo Performance Choreographed by Kelly Jones and Performed by Flo Davies. Ever wished you could be someone else? Ever wished that someone else could be a Disney Princess? Can young girls escape from ‘Princess Culture’? This solo performance explores the influence Disney Princesses have on our perception of beauty. NB. This show is performed in the University Theatre female changing rooms and so capacity is limited. Faux 4.15pm - University Theatre Choreographed by Charlee Furze False memories. Imagine remembering something that never actually happened. This group dance explores how we can rely completely on a memory that was never actually there to begin with.
TUESDAY 28 MARCH 2017 Presentation: An Investigation into the Impact of Choreography within Musical Theatre and its Contribution to Narrative. 12.30pm - University Theatre, Room UT.113 (Invited audience only) Presented by Natalie Warren This investigation will be exploring the different features used within Musical Theatre which contribute towards the communication of narrative. With a specific focus on the impact of the choreography it gives reference to different musicals from a wide range of genres.

Is it possible to control our worries and when does worry become a destructive force? This group piece journeys through the choreographer’s personal experience and intimate memories of worry in a search for some answers. Does your personality come into play or do we just have to stay calm and reconnect with who we are?

Live at Your Own Pace 3.15pm - University Theatre A dance film by Mason Palmer This short film explores the concept of time as a social construct.
The Human Animal 3.45pm - University Theatre Group performance choreographed by Lucy Everson & Laura Penlington What are the similarities between humans and apes? How physically different are we? What governs our behaviour? Is it the need to survive or the restraints of society? Perhaps the line between humans and apes is not as definitive as you may think...

“Everything has a crack in it. That’s how the light gets in”- Leonard Cohen A choreographic exploration into the physical and psychological concepts of light and darkness. Light surrounds our life in more ways than you think...
Circumstance 2pm - University Theatre Choreographed and directed by Jasmine Hall The uncertainty kicks in… Breath shallow, hands fiddling and eyes wandering. Are you ready to take that step and disrupt the cycle? You are about to change everything. Otherwise, you will repeat this forever. Change within our lives is out of our control, but how do you react? A performance investigating personal responses to change and its emotional, physical and psychological impacts on the individual.
Ergon 2.45pm - University Theatre A Screen Dance by Theanora Criswell-Sanderson
Ergon: [Greek; work, deed, product, function] A characteristic function or activity uniquely ascribed to a thing or kind of thing. What is a human’s function? A film exploring someone’s purpose in this world, through a modernised take on the Myth of Narcissus. Is our vanity becoming a self-conceived competitor in our battle for self-indulgence? Sometimes we just have to look away from our reflection.
Make or Break 3.15pm - University Theatre Choreographed by Abbie Haycock This piece explores how the loss of someone close can affect and change relationships and the family environment.
Experiment 13! 4pm - University Theatre Dance Film Choreographed and Directed by Dale Russell Experiment 13! is all about life. Can someone or something be brought to life? What is the meaning of life? This short dance film attempts to find out if this experiment really is a matter of life or death.
Communication Breakdown 4.30pm - University Theatre Choreographed and directed by Beth Williams
“I know that you believe you understand what you think I said, but I am not sure that you realise that what you heard is not what I meant.� Robert McCloskey This duet explores two experiences of communication and understanding using British Sign Language and movement.
THURSDAY 30 MARCH 2016 Presentation: An Investigation into whether Dance should be removed from the KS3 English National Curriculum 12.30pm - University Theatre Presented by Jade Maden
“Learning gives creativity, creativity leads to thinking, thinking provides knowledge, knowledge makes you great”- Abdul Kalam. This project aims to provide a discussion about the arts within education. It aims to come to a conclusion as to whether Dance should be considered an important enough part of a child’s education to remain within the National Curriculum.
Perfect Piece of Paper 1.15pm - University Theatre Solo performance choreographed and performed by Amelia White Breaking someone’s trust is like crumpling up a perfect piece of paper. You can smooth it over but it’s never going to be the same again...
I Dance Because... 2pm - University Theatre Dance film by Jessica Crawford This dance film explores the reasons why different people of all ages and backgrounds have a passion for dance.
Forgetting Flora Young 2.30pm - University Theatre Group performance choreographed by Alex O’Connor A flash back of memories that take you on a journey though time. This personal exploration shows a glimpse into my Nan’s progressive breakdown as she loses herself, who she used to be and forgets the people around her.
The Choice 3.15pm - University Theatre Choreographed by Lucy Pearce Would you rather have hiccups for the rest of your life or always feel like you need to sneeze but can’t? Would you rather never be able to fall in love, or lose the one you love after a week of being with you? A performance exploring the consequences of decision making and what happens if you make a mistake.
Final Test 4pm - University Theatre Choreographed and directed by Xavier De Santos and Samuel De La Torre The struggle between eight unwilling subjects has never been so strong, especially when they are not in control. In a room where escape is not an option, human relations are tested through a series of anonymous experiments. How far will the fight for power challenge their human morality?
