UNIVERSITY THEATRE 16 - 18 MAY 2022

WELCOME Welcome to Third Space 2022, the annual Bath Spa Dance degree shows. This year’s artists have drawn on all their skills as creators and performers to be able to demonstrate the imaginative potential of dance. The programme includes 3 days of 25 new live dance performances and short films that show how dance offers a powerful way to explore, question and re-present the world around us. MONDAY 16 MAY 1.30pm At The Table Directed/Choreographed by Carolina Martins. Performed by Eliza Agrosoaie, Nuria Urbistondo, Tilen Terzan, Ellie-Morgan Shaw, Evie Frost and Carolina Martins. How oblivious are you to what is in front of you? At The Table is a dance theatre piece exploring human interactions and the hidden influences people have on our daily lives. 2.10pm an ode to lilith Choreographed by Sophie Martin. Performed by Pollyanna Mckenzie-Howard and Sophie Martin. The divine feminine and the dark feminine. We find power in both, we find ourselves in both, we embrace the lightness and the darkness as one. Lilith tells us to take back our power. 2.50pm Dr Coppélius Solo choreographed and performed by Errin Whalley. This work is inspired by the Ballet Coppélia and explores through the eyes of Dr Coppélius, from Hoffmann’s The Sandman (1816). It challenges the ‘pretty, prettiness’ of classical ballet and delves into darker themes of the original story, exploring fixation and its terrifying consequences. Doctor Coppélius is an obsessed inventor and alchemist creating a beautiful automaton, who can pass as human… or can it? But when does the created become the creator and how much control can the creator take? (CW: mild gore, flashing images).


3.30pm One’s Own Shadow Choreographed by Phoebe Bravery. Performed by Rebbecca Guria, Leah Graham and Phoebe Bravery. This dance exploration looks at the shadows of life and is set during the blitz and evacuation of World War 2.

4.10pm Energy Directed, choreographed and performed by Hannah Mills An insight into what life is like living with ADHD. How much of the film could you watch?

5.50PM BUILDING BLOCKS Directed/Choreographed by Isobel Homer. Performed by Niamh Cockcroft, Hollie Clapham and Libby Cashmore-Clifton. When a child is born, movement begins to develop. It is a process that is commonly overlooked but it is one of the most essential life skills . Even though the development may be the same, each journey is individual to the child. They grow, they learn, they play.


6.30pm El Amor Callao’ (Silenced Love) Directed by Paula Ocon. Performed by Harri Yafai, April Dyson, Pollyanna McKenzie-Howard, Bethany White and Paula Ocon. This work is an exploration into the narrative and themes of the story El Amor Brujo (Bewitched Love), written by María Lejarrága but signed by her husband Gregorio Martínez Sierra, who subsequently gained all the credit and recognition for her works. This live group performance is a vindication of how women have been silenced throughout history, and is choreographed in a fusion style between flamenco and contemporary. 7.10pm DROER Directed/Choreographed by Steph Conder. Performed by Danny Wayne Butcher, Milo Cunico, Milly Tidmarsh-Watts, Teen Edwards and Steph Conder. Immerse yourself into the world of ADHD. This dance piece explores elements of the so-called ‘disorder’ to show the struggles and joys of the brain. INSOMNIA, HYPER FIXATION, PROCRASTINATION, LOVE BOMBING, HYPER ACTIVITY, ANXIETY, IMPULSES. 7.50pm Dust Directed by Pollyanna Mckenzie-Howard. Performed by Carolina Martins, Paula Ocon, Sophie Byers and Pollyanna Mckenzie-Howard. Sensing energy and vibrations, feeling the emotions that drive you. The interconnections of the human body with the Earth. Extreme temperatures are influencing the senses. How does your body react?


8:45pm Eostre Explorations by Ellie Thorp How does it feel to really understand who you are? What does spirituality mean to you? When out in nature how do you feel? Surrounded by trees, mud, water and the glorious sun, do you feel connected to any of that? This personal exploration is performed surrounded by nature and will create a safe and creative space for any and all to reflect and explore what spirituality means to them. *This event takes place outside on the grounds of Newton Park campus. Please meet at the foyer of the University Theatre at 8.40pm where you will be guided to the performance space.


TUESDAY 17 MAY 2022 2.30pm TEMPERED Directed by Lily Mundy. Performed by Steph Conder, Darcy Wood-Walsh and Lily Mundy. What does it feel like to never see your true reflection? This piece explores the mind controlling disorder of body dysmorphia. 3.10pm The Confession Room Choreographed, directed and performed by Caitlin Hawker. Every single person on this planet has a secret, whether they are hiding it from one person or millions. This live solo performance is a verbatim exploration of anonymously submitted confessions, and allows people to hear their secrets out loud, without holding any responsibility for them. 3.50pm inside my mind Directed/choreographed by Niamh Cockcroft. Performed by Izzy Walters, Cerys Culver, Josh Owen and Niamh Cockcroft. Food is fuel. But food to some can also be anxiety, guilt, regret, anger, obsession. It can be an inescapable thought, an unbearable weight. This performance is a personal exploration into the psychological impact of living with an eating disorder.


4.30pm The Fallacy of Hope In a Higher Power By Joseph Stevens. What happens when you’ve given all you have? When it’s not enough? When they still want more, when the line between giving and taking blurs?

6.30pm IGNITE Directed/choreographed by April Dyson. Performed by Isobel Homer, Paula Ocon and Rebecca Guria and April Dyson. This dance piece is inspired by the choreographer’s personal associations with fire.

7.10pm OUT OF CONTROL Directed/choreographed by Sophie Byers. Performed by Ellie Thorp, Amelia Mcpherson, Hollie Clapham, Katie Baggott and Sophie Byers. Do you ever look at someone and wonder what is going on inside their head? A choreographic exploration into auditory hallucinations, the experiences inside our minds and how our own emotions control us.


7.50pm INVISIBLE LINES Choreographed by Divija Melally in collaboration with Edwina Pereira, Ella Swannell and Erin Green. The only real border that exists is that between the land and the ocean. Then why do invisible lines have so much power? How many people are torn apart by worthless pieces of paper? How desperate must you be to hang off an airplane, to put your child on a flimsy boat? Where is the safe space? We scroll through pleas for help, avert our eyes from wars happening right in front of us, and train ourselves to ‘look at the bright side’. But what about people who don’t have the privilege of a brighter side?


M Dedicated Housewives 8.30pm Choreographed by Alice Bithell and Brooke Adamason. Performed by Danielle Gregory, Amber Hobbs, Alice Bithell and Brooke Adamson. The perfect housewife knows her place. A dance performance exploring the daily routine and expectations of a 1950s housewife.

WEDNESDAY 19 MAY 2022 1pm hamartia Written/choreographed by Eden Leo. Performed by Phoebe Moss, Harrison Yafai and Eden Leo. hamartia /həˈmɑːtɪə/ noun a trio performance exploring society’s flawed obsession with gender norms 1.40pm Queer Is A Tender Feeling Directed by Erin Green This documentary film looks at the ever evolving world of drag through the insights and experiences of six UK-based drag artists.


2.20pm HEADSPACE Directed/choreographed by Angela Miller in collaboration with Alfie Walsh, Edwina Pereira and Erin Green. What’s on your mind? Put your thoughts on the stage. A choreographic exploration into what goes on inside our heads. Inspired by the nonsense poetry of Edward Lear and ‘Not I’ by Samuel Beckett. Artistic responses by Aleksandra Lysik (painting) and Jack Burnett (animations) 3pm My Coat Stand Told Me So Directed and choreographed by Ellie MorganShaw and Orlenna Todd. Performed by Ellie Morgan-Shaw, Orlenna Todd and Lucy Marie Hopkins. Do you ever feel like an explosive, anxious, paranoid completely alone hole in the ground? Or perhaps like an impulsive, dependant, suicidal waste of space that is convinced their coat stand can talk? This is living with Borderline Personality Disorder. 3.40pm JOHN Directed by Katie Henshall. ‘Today’s moments will be tomorrow’s memories’ Kevin Campbell (1994) A screendance inspired by a special bond between loved ones and the bittersweet reality of watching these grow.


4.20pm I don’t know how I got here Directed/choreographed and performed by Darcy Wood-Walsh in collaboration with Alice Chapman, Lily Mundy and Daisy Maguire. Corporate environments can be toxic for those doubting themselves, as being professional can require high levels of confidence. Male workers are less likely to experience this phenomenon, but women can be left with issues caused by the system they work in. This piece looks into 4 successful womens’ experiences as they all suffer with the weight Imposter Syndrome carries. So we ask you, how do you keep your head, when you feel like you are drowning? If you find out, can you let us know?

5.00pm INVESTIGATOR Choreographed by Katrina Bolsunova. Performed by Angela Miller and Katrina Bolsunova. A choreographic exploration into the stress the police experience once a crime has been committed.
