“ I love Bath Spa. It has a welcoming vibe which makes it feel like you’re really part of a community. It’s a smaller university than some others which is great because it means you get treated as an individual, and it’s easy to speak to lecturers.” Lucy Close, Current Student

FEELING AT HOME
STUDENT PROFILE KHADEEJA OSMAN When Khadeeja Osman came to Bath Spa University, she was smitten by what she found in one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Now, as a student mentor, she’s helping others follow suit. “The first time I visited Bath, I fell in love with the city. I went to iconic sites, such as the Royal Crescent and the Circus, but I was really drawn to all the little independent places. I didn’t know anyone, and that was daunting, but exciting; it’s a fresh chapter and something that is yours to discover. “During freshers’ week the unexpected things were the most fun. For example, one evening we decided to go to a silent disco. I wasn’t particularly keen, but it was such a laugh. Even now, my flatmates and I remember it as one of the more bizarre experiences we’ve shared.
“ The first time I visited Bath, I fell in love with the city. I went to iconic sites, such as the Royal Crescent and the Circus, but I was really drawn to all the little independent places.”
“I was surprised by how nice student halls were. My halls were brand new and in the centre of the city. My housemates and I sometimes study together in the kitchen, or we’ll go to coffee shops; Bath is spoilt because it has so many. We do activities together – we went to see a jazz band inside the Roman Baths for free with a student pass. There’s also a spa with a rooftop pool, which we get a 25% discount for, too. The city has lots of nightclubs, but everything’s small and underground because it’s a World Heritage Site. At Christmas there is an ice rink and markets, and this summer there was an outdoor cinema and a bar with sand and you could play volleyball.
“I love my course – it has a community feel and I don’t feel awkward talking in seminars because my tutors are supportive. It’s also good to be able to chat to my tutors informally about geography topics, such as how human actions affect the environment. “I’m particularly interested in the human aspect of geography, so I like learning about how diet affects our climate, including things like how we use plastic, which is topical at the moment. A lot of the assessments are based on fieldwork. We got to go to Glastonbury in November. We also get the chance to go on subsidised trips to India and Barcelona. “Last year I was a student ambassador, where the University pays you to do things such as helping out with its social media channels, or filling bags for Open Days. I was also a peer mentor, which meant first-year students could contact me if they needed advice. “Bath is unique because it sits low in the valley and is surrounded by countryside. My flatmates and I like to hop in the car and drive off to places such as Bradford-onAvon or Westbury and go exploring, taking photos and drinking coffee. I feel at home here. “A lot of my friends from home tell me that I seem really happy whenever I talk about it. I’m hoping to go on to do a Master’s degree in regeneration or planning, and eventually go into a career in town planning.”

BAT
Bath could reasonably lay claim to being the perfect student city. It’s an official United Nations World Heritage site. A place that’s exciting and buzzing, but also safe, friendly and easy to explore. Historic and beautiful Bath is one of the world’s most beautiful and historic cities. It’s home to the world-famous Roman Baths, the Georgian Royal Crescent and the Circus, Bath Abbey and Pulteney Bridge, with stunning parks, set in rolling green countryside. A great buzz Bath is full of quiet corners, great independent shops and cafes, but also has a vibrant Arts scene – including the Bath Festival, which Bath Spa students help deliver – a lively nightlife, and outstanding sports venues and facilities. The University has close links with many of the local Arts organisations, including Bath Festivals and the Holburne Museum. Well-connected Bath is under 90 minutes on a direct train to central London, an hour from Cardiff, and under 15 minutes from Bristol. Bristol Airport is less than an hour away; Glastonbury is just down the road. Bath means business Bath has been a creative city for 2,000 years, since the Romans arrived and built the first British tourist attraction! Now Bath is bursting with creative industries, as well as being home to leading organisations in education, food and drink, publishing, creative technology and more.

PROJECT PROFILE FOREST OF IMAGINATION Once a year something magical happens in Bath. A part of the city is transformed into a fantastical playground of exploration – Forest of Imagination. Creativity is used to turn urban spaces into places where people come together to explore their community in a new and different way. One of the creators of Forest of Imagination is Dr Penny Hay, who is a Research Fellow and Senior Lecturer in Arts Education at Bath Spa. Penny is an expert in arts education and passionate about the important role of creativity in education. She was instrumental in setting up the National Artist Teacher scheme with Arts Council England that offers teachers the opportunity to develop their own creative practice. Speaking about why Forest of Imagination is so important, she says: “Creativity and imagination can enhance wellbeing and transform lives. “Forest of Imagination offers an immersive experience that is inspired by nature and encourages adults and children to enjoy their own imagination and creativity. It is a showcase for Bath as a hotbed of innovation and artistic exploration.” Forest of Imagination was developed and is run by a collaborative team from Bath Spa University, landscape architects Grant Associates, arts-based charity House of Imagination (formally 5x5x5=creativity), creative consultancy Imaginnovation and architects Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios. Each year the event moves to a new location for around four to five days and is completely free to attend. Visitors can immerse themselves in sensory installations, artworks, outdoor theatre and other participatory creative activities. Forest of Imagination works in partnership with local business and civic authorities to realise the collective ambition of making a difference in the city of Bath.

We are lucky to work within some wonderful spaces across Bath and beyond. Here’s a snapshot of some of these and why we think they are special.
Newton Park A special place where you can stroll to a morning lecture or grab a coffee with friends, watching the mist slowly rise over rolling green hills. Newton Park is set in the magnificent grounds of a historic manor house. It means that, as well as providing stunning open-air locations for performance and socialising, there’s space to stretch your legs and your mind, and to relax when you need to. Sion Hill Part of the Bath Spa family for over 35 years, this much loved space is set atop a hill overlooking the city of Bath. It provides a creative space for thinking and making.

“ If you are entrepreneurial, (and you can learn those skills on a degree programme at Bath Spa) it has never been easier to find an audience for your work. And if you have engaged in your degree fully and honestly, and you are able to bring theory and practice together in your subject, then you will be in a good place to start out.

Tim documented the development of our new Locksbrook Campus as it transformed from an old industrial factory into a stunning new space for our students and this image is from the interior before the new workshops and studio spaces were built.
STAFF PROFILE TIM VYNER Tim Vyner is a renowned British illustrator known for his visual journalism technique which involves recording events by hand in real time. He’s also Professor of Illustration at Bath Spa and has worked here for over 20 years. Tim uses simple tools – a pen, a sketchbook, an iPad and a camera – in locations all over the world as part of his work as a reportage illustrator. In 2018, he worked for The Telegraph illustrating the FIFA World Cup in Russia. In the same year, he also documented the Street Child World Cup in Moscow. Other projects have taken him to the 2012 London Olympic Games with The Times and 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, FIFA World Cup in Japan and Korea in 2002, the sacred and hidden world of Mount Athos monasteries in Greece, and even a war zone in Beirut. If that doesn’t sound busy enough, Tim is also the author of 10 children’s books, including World Team for Random House. He’s every bit the proof that creative portfolio careers can be as thrilling as they are financially viable. But it didn’t just happen. Tim’s advice to anyone looking to study a creative degree is: “ Experiment, be brave, try new things throughout your whole degree. “It’s a competitive environment for graduates today and it can be hard to stand out. Art and design is everywhere and because of social media it is more difficult to find anything distinctive. “But, if you are entrepreneurial, (and you can learn those skills on a degree programme at Bath Spa) it has never been easier to find an audience for your work. And if you have engaged in your degree fully and honestly, and you are able to bring theory and practice together in your subject, then you will be in a good place to start out.” Most art and design subjects are taught at our new Locksbrook Campus which is a state-ofthe-art purpose-built space for students. The large open-plan building has technical workshops surrounded by open, flexible studio spaces, as well as large, open social areas, an art shop, gallery and café.

Links with professions and industries Our lecturers and tutors have excellent links with industry professionals and experts to make sure they’re teaching the most up-to-date employability skills. They work closely with employers and industry partners to provide on-course opportunities – such as working on real-life challenges and creative briefs, or helping produce arts festivals and events. Professional Placement Year A Professional Placement Year is available on all undergraduate programmes as a four-year course. Many students graduate with little or no work experience relevant to their degree or future career aspirations, so participating in a year-long placement is guaranteed to boost the employability skills you require for real-life work. It’s also a great way to put into practice the skills you’ve been developing on your course and start building networks ready for when you graduate. You can find out more about Professional Placement Year options on our website: bathspa.ac.uk/placements
Support for entrepreneurs At nearly 14%, we have significantly higher than the national average of graduates in self-employment and for some of our courses this can be higher than 60%. For students interested in setting up a business, Bath Sparks is our support programme designed to help students, staff and graduates create, share, develop and unleash their entrepreneurial ideas and ventures. The programme offers start-up grant funds, one-to-one advice, workshops, links to professional networks, and valuable exposure. We offer plenty of opportunities for you to win funding, plus a schedule of special guest events throughout the year.

Earn while you learn We have opportunities for you to work in the University, from supporting professional staff in the Library to paid roles as Peer Mentors. Thanks to Bath being a student city and major tourist attraction, there are plenty of opportunities for part-time work. The University Job Shop is a free recruitment service, just for our students. It can help link you to good-quality, well-paid, part-time employment of up to 15 hours a week.

FLORA SEARSON ALUMNI PROFILE A degree in Creative Media Practice might not seem the obvious qualification for a sheep farmer, but the co-founder of The Dartmoor Shepherd, Flora Searson, would disagree. “I’m certain I wouldn’t have been able to co-found The Dartmoor Shepherd without the knowledge and skills I gained through my degree in Creative Media Practice at Bath Spa. It taught me how to operate professional filming equipment and how to build websites and manage social media accounts, all of which has been invaluable. “We attend lots of shows in the summer months – such as Countryfile Live, The Big Feastival and The Royal Three Counties Show – to sell our sheepskin products and promote our lamb box scheme. But we’re hoping to do more.” Whilst studying, Flora made frequent trips home to Dartmoor where she slowly began to learn the ancient profession of shepherding by helping her partner Lewis with his expanding flocks. Having met in Chagford, Dartmoor aged 16 and then attended different universities, Lewis and Flora were keen to return home together on the completion of their degrees to create a local, sustainable and high-quality farm company, and so The Dartmoor Shepherd came into being. The business has flourished and attracted quite a lot of national media interest, with a number of appearances on BBC Radio 4 and CBeebies, and programmes such as Countryfile, Escape to the Country and Back to the Land with Kate Humble. Flora and Lewis were also invited to Clarence House, as guests of The Prince’s Countryside Fund, to meet Prince Charles. “At Bath Spa, I knew I loved telling stories through media and I thought my degree might lead into a career in film production. But instead I have found an outlet for my skills in something much more rewarding. I am promoting something I feel passionate about and, although we don’t know what the future holds, I’m sure it will flourish.”

STUDENT UNION OF THE YEAR 2019
Grand Awards 2019 National Centre for Diversity
Bath Spa Students’ Union I am Jazz, the Students’ Union President and my job is to represent students and empower them to be the best they can be! I studied Music at Bath Spa for three years and was then elected as full-time SU officer (officers change every one to two years to make sure the student voice is always represented accurately). The Students’ Union is anything and everything you want/need it to be. It is run by students for students and is forever changing based on the student voice! The Students’ Union is a charity organisation which is separate to the University, but works very closely with them to ensure that student voice is at the heart of everything Bath Spa is about. Every university in the UK has a Students’ Union, and every student is automatically enrolled once they join the university. Whilst day-to-day the SU represents students it also works hard to ensure that students have the best student experience possible, running many extras such as: sports clubs and societies (all student-led) volunteering, fundraising, campaigning, an advice centre for any advice and support
students need, student jobs, student representative roles, trips, events and we also have a bar, shop and gym on Newton Park campus, where every penny of profit goes back into your student experience. I couldn't have imagined my life at Bath Spa without the SU, it gave me volunteering opportunities on committees for cheerleading and snowsports, as well as trips abroad and now giving me employment as a graduate. I gained countless friends, opportunities and experiences and the SU overall just boosted my wellbeing whilst being at University.
Opportunities to engage and enjoy Our Students’ Union provides a wide range of sports clubs and societies – a great way to relax and meet people. There are lots of opportunities to keep your body and your mind active and healthy. If you do need support, there will always be someone on hand to see you through.
Explore www.bathspasu.co.uk
I have experienced first-hand the positive impact that the SU can have on students and I know that I, and many others, feel like their time at Bath Spa wouldn’t have been the same without it. Come and say hello and ask us anything!

OUR WORLD
30
We are very aware of our responsibility for taking care of and protecting our spaces as well as our people. We scored a first-class award in the 2019 People and Planet Green League. Our efforts to minimise waste in Bath itself were recognised in the 2018 ‘Green Gown’ Awards for Universities who excel at environmental practice. Dr Julian Greaves, Sustainability Manager at Bath Spa, explains how we are doing that: “Over the last 10 years, we’ve continued to improve our environmental performance by reducing our carbon emissions by over 50% per m2, increasing recycling rates to 80% of all University waste and by improving the biodiversity on our sites through our biodiversity and habitat management plan. “In 2018 we published our overall Sustainability Strategy and our Carbon Reduction Management Plan, which sets out a path to net zero carbon by 2030. “More recently, we’ve expanded our activities to ensure that issues relating to sustainability are addressed in all our degree courses. Altogether, this will enable all our students to take informed decisions and make a meaningful difference to the world and the communities in which they live – throughout their lives – making the world a better place.”

IMPACT The academic staff who teach you also spend a proportion of their time conducting research and extending their own professional practice. This is an important aspect of what makes us a university as it underpins what and how we teach our students. We aim to use this research knowledge and technical expertise to make a transformative difference in people’s lives. We are very proud of the achievements of our staff and here are a few of the many examples of how the work they do makes a real impact on the world.

EMOTION COACHING Promoting wellbeing and positive learning outcomes for children in schools, the Attachment Awareness and Emotion Coaching project has worked with over 100 schools in Bath and North East Somerset. It was inspired by a desire to investigate how a common approach to children and young people in an area of relative deprivation could contribute to improved wellbeing and outcomes. An important outcome of the research was that national reports such as the Health Select Committee in November 2014 and the Department of Health Future in Mind Report in March 2015 have pointed to the importance of addressing mental and emotional wellbeing issues in schools, while in November 2015 the National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) report on children’s attachment, to which Bath Spa was a major contributor, made a specific recommendation that research be undertaken into effective schoolbased strategies.
IVORS COMPOSER AWARD NOMINATION Dr Matthew Sergeant, composer and senior lecturer in composition, received a nomination in the “Small Chamber” category of the 2019 Ivors Composer Awards. For 15 years, the Ivors Composer Awards – formerly known as the British Composer Awards – have recognised the creative talent of composers and sound artists to promote the art of composition in contemporary classical, jazz and sound art. Matthew’s music explores ideas surrounding agency and materiality, sound and bodies. His nominated composition ‘Meeting the Universe Halfway’ was commissioned by The House of Bedlam and was supported by Bath Spa University’s Quality Research Fund, and the Royal Northern College of Music. The title of Matthew’s unique piece was inspired by a book of the same name by contemporary American philosopher, Karen Barad, and is intended to be played by flute, saxophone, electric guitar, cello and apparatuses. In fact, central to the piece are three custom-made apparatuses created by Matthew, each made from metal, ceramic or wood, taking the form of a gravitypowered device that personifies a chaotic system. Matthew said: “Sharing my knowledge and experience with my students is really important to me as they often see things in new ways, make new connections between compositions, and provide fresh perspectives. They truly are a community of enquiring minds.”
PRESSURES ON TEACHERS Research conducted by the Psychology Department revealed the pressures affecting modern teachers including written and verbal abuse from their pupils’ parents. The findings show that over a quarter of primary teachers and a fifth of secondary teachers are exposed to negative behaviours at least once a month. Reported abuse ranged from online messages to confrontation on school premises. The figures directly correlate with statistics that show that the education sector has the highest incidence of long-term sickness absences within the public sector, due to stress. The research was conducted by Bath Spa University senior lecturer in Psychology Dr Jermaine Ravalier, and Dr Joe Walsh. Jermaine said: “Many of the teachers we spoke to love what they do, however, these findings paint a picture of a group of professionals that are under pressure from many quarters. As well as government cuts to funding, administrative demands, and increased class sizes, we also found that teachers work on average 20 hours per week more than they’re contracted to – this all adds up to long absences from work and unfortunately lead to many passionate teachers leaving the sector. “It is a real shame that parents are adding to these issues by letting emotions get the better of them and treating teachers in an inappropriate manner. Ongoing training for teachers, to help manage confrontation, is needed as is investment in understanding the trigger points that cause the abuse so that school management teams can address this growing problem.”
NOVEL ADAPTATION NOMINATED FOR AN INTERNATIONAL EMMY The BAFTA-winning BBC adaptation of Creative Writing lecturer Dr Joanna Nadin’s novel Joe All Alone was nominated for an International Emmy Award. Joe All Alone, the CBBC drama series, was awarded a BAFTA in 2018 and is based on the 2015 novel of the same name. Thirteen-year-old Joe is left to fend for himself when his mum flies to Spain with her latest dodgy boyfriend, Dean. What starts as an adventure quickly escalates when the food and money run out, Joe’s mum doesn’t come home, and the local thugs catch up with Joe. Writing for Young People lecturer Joanna has written more than 80 books for children and adults, including the award-winning Penny Dreadful series and the criticallyacclaimed YA novels Eden, Wonderland and Undertow. Joe All Alone was also nominated for a Carnegie Medal in 2016.

Living costs and other expenses If you’re living away from home, the biggest expense will be accommodation costs. Next biggest are your day-to-day living expenses such as groceries and going out. Though the amount varies based on the individual, a single student living away from home during term time will usually need about £96 a week. Of course, if you live at home while studying, your costs will be lower. You’ll also need to consider coursespecific costs like books, stationery and printing. For some courses, you may need to pay for field trips, art materials and specialist equipment. And students on some Art and Design courses also have to pay a Study Visit fee. For more on Study Visit fees, please refer to the course pages on our website. For more on studio fees, please see our website.

Bath Spa University Bursaries Bath Spa University offers bursaries to undergraduate students who are eligible UK home students living in an area of low participation in higher education and also on low income. The bursary does not need to be paid back. This Undergraduate Award Scheme is part of Bath Spa University’s Access Agreement with the government and is aimed at widening access to degree courses by removing financial barriers to education for students from under-represented groups. Access Fund The University Access Fund has been established to: –h elp students in financial hardship – help in a financial emergency –p revent students from dropping out. You can apply to the Access Fund at any point throughout the academic year and summer vacation – except our final-year students, who must apply four weeks before the end of their course. The University Access Fund is discretionary, so there’s no guarantee applicants will receive an award.
* In line with current government legislation. Applies to four-year degree programmes only, where a full academic year is spent studying abroad or working.

TIPS ON HANDLING YOUR MONEY Plan ahead! Work out a budget and try to stick to it. Be careful you don’t go too crazy in the first few weeks. Make sure you get all the money you’re entitled to. Talk to Student Wellbeing if you’re not sure. Make sure you aren’t paying too much tax. Shop around and find the best student bank account for you – look out for good interest rates and interest-free overdrafts. Plan for essential expenses first, especially accommodation (the biggest expense). If you’re renting privately, remember to budget for heating, lighting and water bills. Buy a bus pass – it works out much cheaper. Consider buying a Student Railcard, too. Don’t buy too many ready meals or takeaways. Home cooking is generally cheaper and better for you. Invest in a NUS student discount card and use it wherever possible. Use the library or buy second-hand books. Avoid credit cards and never use a payday loan. Make the most of social events on campus. Ask about part-time work at the Job Shop sooner rather than later – but don’t work more than 15 hours a week. Having a vacation job lined up can also be useful (see page 23). Don’t ignore financial difficulties. Come and talk to Student Wellbeing before things become a problem – studentwellbeing@bathspa.ac.uk
