INTRODUCTION Greetings to each one and welcome to Jerusalem. Expect a blessing! You will have a unique encounter with the People, the Land and the Book. Knowing some Hebrew before you come is part of that blessing. I know that some of you have already begun this study by tuning into our Hebrew classroom on the Bat Kol website (www.batkol.info) with our Israeli Professor, Sarah Israeli. To make your study of Hebrew enjoyable and to relieve you of some of the tension around tests, we have decided to tell you how to study and to give you the test to do before you come. This test will be marked and returned to you. When you arrive you will be given the same test and you will be expected to do it without the help of your books. The reason for the emphasis on Hebrew is that the Hebrew word is essential to Jewish exegesis of a text. This booklet called An Introduction to the Hebrew Language and CD is accompanied by a copy of the test. But you can begin your study of Hebrew now. The booklet is also on the website and there you will find pages entitled, Hebrew Letters and Vowels; Learning to Write the Hebrew Alphabet (script form); Learning to Write the Hebrew Alphabet with vowels; Learning to Write Your First Hebrew Words. We encourage you to download these pages from the website and then go to the Hebrew classroom on the website with Prof. Sarah Israeli to learn how to write and pronounce the letters and form and pronounce words. Now for details of the test: The Hebrew Language test for all students will be during the first week of the program. The test will have two parts. Part 1 is for all students. Part 2 is for more advanced students (those who have attended Bat Kol programs or have a background in Hebrew studies). All students are expected to: • recognize the PRINT form of the aleph-bet (the alphabet) • be able to write from memory the SCRIPT form of the aleph-bet • understand the most common Hebrew Vowels • have an introductory knowledge of the vocabulary on pages 5 through 8 and tracks 1-5 on the CD Part 2 students will be expected to • study the vocabulary on pages 9 to 18 and CD tracks 6 to 10 You will note that we have emphasized the need for you to recognize the PRINT form of all the letters and learn to write the SCRIPT form. Bat Kol lecturers will use the script form of written Hebrew (this is the common form used in Israel) and you will be expected to know how to read and write using this form. As already mentioned, to help relieve any stress you may be feeling about the Hebrew Language test, this kit includes copies of the Hebrew test, one for beginners and one for the more advanced. You are required to complete the test at home and email it to: natalie.king@batkol.info or mail it to: Bat Kol Institute, POB 8030, Jerusalem 91080, Israel. We will correct your test and return it to you by May 15th. The same test will be administered in class in Jerusalem during the first week of the July program. All participants do Test A and returning and advanced participants do Test A and B. Beginners may also do test B! Those who

v

get 75% or higher will be excused from the out-of-class tutoring that will take place during the month. Hebrew will be part of every day. Each day of class will begin with about 20 minutes of Hebrew from the new Siddur, Mishkan T’filah (used at Hebrew Union College). You can prepare for this by studying the Hebrew prayers on pages 19 to 23 and CD tracks 11-23. Begin your study now. Your reward will be great. The medium is the Message. I look forward to seeing you all in Jerusalem.

Katarzyna Kowalska NDS Co-Ordinator, Bat Kol Institute, Jerusalem

THE DEFINITE AND INDEFINITE ARTICLE AND PREPOSITIONS The definite article (the) ‫ ה‬usually has a ַ‫ ה‬under it followed by a dagesh in the next letter. e.g. ‫הד‬ Exceptions: When the definite article appears before a word beginning one of the five guttural letters (‫ר‬, ‫ע‬,ַ‫ח‬,ַ‫ה‬,ַ‫ )ַא‬there is no dagesh in the following letter and the ַ‫ ה‬may change to ַ‫ַה‬or ֶַׁ‫ה‬. Exact rules: before ‫א‬,ַ‫ע‬, or ‫ר‬, ַ‫ ה‬becomes ַ‫ה‬ before ‫ ח‬or ‫ה‬, ַ‫ ה‬becomes ַ‫ה‬ before ַ‫ה‬,ַ‫ע‬ ַ or ַ‫ח‬, ַ‫ּה‬usually becomes ֶַׁ‫ה‬

The indefinite article (and) ‫ו‬ In Hebrew the letter ‫( ו‬and) is attached to the beginning of the word. The ‫ ו‬usually takes the sheva ַ‫ו‬. The ‫ ו‬may sometimes appear as ‫( וּ‬pronounced “oo” not “voo”) or as ַ‫ו‬,ַ‫ו‬, ַ‫ו‬,ַ ֶׁ‫ו‬,ַ ֵ‫ו‬, – These variations do not change the meaning of the ‫( ו‬and). The pronunciation of the beged kefet letters ‫פ‬,ַ‫ַכ‬and ‫ ב‬may change but this does not change the meaning of the word. [ beged kefet letters – ַ‫ת‬,‫פ‬,‫כ‬,‫ד‬,‫ג‬,‫] ב‬ Exact rules: before most consonants, and is spelled ַ‫ו‬ before ‫פ‬, ‫ כ‬and ‫ ב‬, and is usually spelled ‫וּ‬ before (ְְ ), and is usually spelled ‫וּ‬ before ( ְ ), and is usually spelled ַ‫ו‬ before ( ְ ), and is usually spelled ֶַׁ‫ו‬ before ( ְ ), and is usually spelled ַ‫ו‬

The word ‘from’ - ‫ מן‬and ‫מ‬ ַ From has two forms. ‫ מן‬and ‫מ‬ ַ . When the form ‫ מן‬is used it is usually separated from the following word by a makkef (hyphen). When attached to a word from takes the form ‫מ‬ ַ ; preceding a guttural letter from takes the form ֵַ‫מ‬, e. g. ‫העיר‬-‫( מן‬from the city); ‫( מּבֵ ן‬from a son); ‫( מֵ אֹהֶׁ ל‬from a tent) Inseparable prepositions

in, with, on ~ ‫ּב‬ ַ ; like, as ~ ַ‫; ּכ‬ to, for ~ ַ‫ל‬ The inseparable preposition normally takes a sheva ( ְ ), e. g. ‫( ּבית‬house); ‫( ּבבית‬in a house). In some circumstances the inseparable prepositions take other vowels. Exact rules:  When connected with a word with ‫( ה‬the) the following occurs: the ‫ ה‬is dropped, any vowel that appeared under the ‫ ה‬is transferred to the inseparable preposition, any dagesh that occurred in the first letter following the hey is retained. (ַ‫ ּבית‬,‫ הּבית‬,‫)ּבּבית‬  When appearing before a noun that begins with a sheva the vowel under the preposition changes from ( ְ ) to ( ְ), e. g. ‫( ּבהֵ מה‬animal); ‫( לַּבהֵ מה‬to/for an animal)  Before a noun that begins with ‫ י‬the vowel under the preposition changes from ( ְ) to ( ְ) and the sheva under the ‫ י‬disappears, e. g. ‫( ירוּשליַם‬Jerusalem); ‫מירוּשליַם‬ ַ (from Jerusalem).  Before a noun beginning with a combination vowel the preposition changes to ( ַ(, ) ַ( or ( ְ). e.g. ‫אֹלהים‬ ַ ‫ַאַֹלהים ← ל‬+ַ‫ל‬ (to gods) ‫ה‬ ַ ַ‫ַאנ׳ַה ← ַּבאנ׳‬+ ַ‫ּב‬ (in ships) ‫אליל‬ ַ ‫ אַליל ← ֶַׁל‬+ ַ‫ל‬ (to an idol)
