E
nvironmental design is the process of addressing surrounding environmental parameters when devising plans, programs, policies, buildings, or products. Classical prudent design may have always considered environmental factors; however, the environmental movement beginning in the 1940s has made the concept more explicit. Environmental design can also refer to the applied arts and sciences dealing with creating the human-designed environment. These fields include architecture, geography, urban planning, landscape, interior design and communication design. Thus, logos and symbols play big role in the environment, the olympics is a good example to show how communication design affected the event.

Identity

T
he Olympic identity is one of the most recognized brands in the world and keeping up with a new image every four years can be challenging. The evolution of the Olympics’ logo and theme has come a long way since 1896. Some have a pivotal
influence on logos that followed, some were inspired by art movements that were current at the time, and some were groundbreaking in the history of design. It’s no wonder why the unveiling of the Olympics’ logo and theme always gets the audience excited. Together, the logos of the past have built a prestigious identity for the Olympics. 10 Olympic logos have been pulled out to share what are the most memorable of them all.

I
t is important to notice the Olympics logo progress throughout the years. The first logo was designed for the first games that were held by Auspices of the international Olympic committee in Athens in 1896. (fig1) Additionally, the red color was first used in the Olympic logo design in 1904 that was held in St. Louis. Then, the red color was presented ever since in the Olympics logo. (fig2).

After that, the Olympic logo design took a different perspective in 1924 when the games were held in Paris. The design became simpler, using more art line format, which helped branding the Olympics. (fig3). The rings we see today in the Olympics design was first introduced in 1932 when the games were held in Los Angeles. Yet, the design was poorly designed because it made it hard for the eyes to find
an outstanding, focal and strong point of the design. (fig4). Putting boundaries on design might encourage creativity while focusing on the basics, the Olympics logo for the games that were held in Helsinki, Finland, continued using one tone in the design, yet incorporating Finland’s flag color. (fig5). The first time and last time an animal was presented in the Olympics logo design, was in the logo that was
used for Rome in 1960 (fig6). The color palette was in black and white to represent a historical feel that symbolized Rome and its history. A timeless, simple logo was presented for Tokyo approach that gave it the timeless effect. Though it only represented the country, it was very appealing through the use of repetition. (fig7) The new artistic approach that was used in the Olympics games logo held in Munich
in 1972 (fig8), used modernism, abstract, a geometric design. Yet, for the typography it would have been better to use a simpler font to balance with the intricate design. The logo used for Barcelona Olympics games in 1992, used multiple meanings that can be represented by abstract form. The logo reflected gymnastic, hurdler, or symbolizing Spain with a Spanish bullfighter. Despite the success and the
memorable logo, the design could have been improved by improving the type and font choices. (fig9). The typography for Olympics games logo held in London in 2012, was poorly designed. However, the logo was bright, energetic, and triggered exciting theme for future Olympics. Although it was not visually the best, the logo added new character to the Olympic branding (fig10). 10

he design of five rings is one of the most recognizable symbols of the Olympic Games. Each ring has its own color. The colors of the rings are blue, yellow, black, green, and red. All of the rings are locked together with three rings on top and two below. Also, the rings are set against a white background. This Olympic symbol dates back to 1912 when it was created by a man named Pierre de Coubertin. The symbol represents the

Olympic Hymn is played when the Olympic flag is raised during the Games. The Olympic Hymn was heard for the first time at the 1896 Athens Olympic Games. Though various composers have put their own stamp on the sound of the Olympic Hymn, it has been a significant part of the pageantry of the Olympic Games for over 100 years. Finally, the medals are especially well-known symbols of the Olympic Games. There is a
five continents of the world with athletes participating in the exciting competitions of the Olympic Games. Another familiar symbol of the Olympic Games is the torch. The journey of the Olympic torch is a long-standing tradition of the Olympic Games dating back to the Berlin Games in 1936. The journey of the torch begins in Olympia, Greece where the ancient Olympic Games took place. The torch is passed along on to various athletes
and notable individuals as it makes its way to the location of the latest Olympic Games. When the Olympic torch arrives at its destination, the final torch bearer lights a tremendous cauldron to signal the start of the Olympic Games. The musical theme belonging to the Olympic Games is a familiar tune to many people. A man named Spyridon Samaras composed the Olympic Hymn in the late nineteenth century. The
gold, silver, and bronze medal for athletes who finish an event in first, second, and third place, respectively. In 1928, the Olympic medals had the figure of Nike (the goddess of victory) emblazoned on one side. She held a winner’s crown in one of her hands. At the beginning of the 21st century, Olympic medals began to picture Nike in a pose that represents the renewal of the Games. The other side of an Olympic medal bears a tribute
to the city hosting the Olympic Games during a particular year. This makes each collection of Olympic medals even more unique.
