IDE 401 Design Build Spring 2021 Interior Design Studio under the supervision of Associate Professor Ammar Kalo

The main goal of this design/build project was to refurbish a CAAD studio space, which started with the new Material Library built a couple semesters ago. The plan was to rework the entire space and consider all aspects pertaining to the studio which include furniture, pinup spaces, storage space, common area, and a display area.

These components are divided into two phases, this semester we dealt with floor (wiring and flooring) and all the furniture (new desks, storage units, communal table and discussion area). In phase two, next year’s IDE students will be designing and building the perimeter (pin-up boards, extra storage and displays).

Con : Unusable pinup space for reviews due to tight circulation

Con : Flooring that reflects sound

Con : Electric Outlets coumns Con : due to the bulkiness and the layout of tables in the studio, there is no space for a deskcrit table Con : Harsh Lighting Con : Sterile environment

Con : Bulky Desks that are not only visually heavy but also blocks out circulation Pro : Large working surface

Con : Lack of soft surfaces and an increase in hard surfaces result in a noisy studio

Con : Lack of space for reviews within studio space

Con : There is no common work stations for students to work in groups

02 Current Studio Analysis

Con : Working tables are too high

Pro : Ample storage

Pro : Pinup being used not only for reviews but also for privacy and noise control

Phase two Spring ‘ 22

In phase two, the aim is to focus on: • Lighting , to fix the current condition in the studio such as harsh bright lighting , which can be fixed by substatuting it with task or ambient lighting. • Acoustic solutions , to help cancel out the noise that bounces around caad. • Storage that can accommodate work and models of the students.

Phase One Spring ‘ 21

In phase one, the aim was to focus on: • Working desks for 18 students. • Lounge. • Communal space in which students can rest, work or socialize . • Meeting area for students to have private deskcrits with the professors and reviews.

Concept: A wall that engulfs a communal space while working desks are at the periphery of the studio

Concept: Multifunctional screens that fold around the studio to create work stations, seating, storage and a meeting space

Pro - Seperation or work + communal - Privacy for working and communal spaces - Electric outlet on walls - Storage space - Proper circulation overall

Con

Pro

- Working desks looking towards walls - Limited space for groups to gathering in working area

Con

- Unstable construction method - Unique spatial organization - Creation of private spaces along - Excessive circulation space - Lack of hierarchy the studio - The use of opacity and density of screen slats to generate private and public spaces

Group 5 : Dania Hasan + Razan Hussein

Concept: Clear distinction between working and communal and working spaces through the introduction of a lounge area

Concept : Shifting of planes that create tetris implied volumes, packed with multi functionality

- Clear distinction between communal and working spaces - Functional organization of working desks - Interactive lounge area with overlapping activities

Con - Lounge is open to public which could lead to sound and privacy problems - Ceiling elements are not practical - Lounge is a dominant feature in studio

The vertical screens area and horizontal lounge area have exchanged elements in order to satisfy certain needs.

Verticality is added to the lounge area through the introduction of screens that provide the users with privacy around the high table and one of the seats.

Horizontality is added to the screens through the introduction of a few benches that assist the users when gathered around the meeting table, and that allow users to lounge casually as well.

The exchange of elements connects the two areas and prevents them from looking like two separate projects

Working hours is when students will most likely be at either their working desks if working individually, or they will be in the meeting area for group work.

11 Axonometrics Studio Time

PIII / 14

During a review, the main part of the studio that will be used is the meeting area, where the tv is going to be used to present the student’s work.

11 Axonometrics Review

PIII / 15

In an effort to make this studio a paperless studio, we had to look for interesting ways to conduct reviews, this is where a VR station comes in.

After studio hours, the main part of the studio that will be used is the Lounge, where some student would rest on the tiered seating, work on the high desks, or work oon their models.

Current CAAD AD2 After Proposal

This space could possibly be used as a pilot study for future development to the rest of the school, and as a demonstration of a creative workspace that has the potential to improve faculty instruction in studios, and address current and future student needs, while also providing ample room to explore more ‘experimental’ design solutions.
