Mayor’s Message
There are many advantages to having kids participate in team sports such as minor hockey. They learn about teamwork, building trust with their teammates, dealing with stress, and setting goals – all valuable skills that kids need to develop to be successful throughout life and develop life long friendships. Kids active in sports develop confidence and learn how to deal with winning and losing with grace. Research has shown that children who participate in sports perform better in school. Hard work, dedication by players, coaches, parents, officials, volunteers and fans are what make minor hockey in North Battleford such a great success! Best wishes in your future hockey endeavours. Ian Hamilton Mayor
Mayor’s Message On behalf of Council and the residents of the Town of Battleford, it is with great pleasure that I have this opportunity to extend a warm welcome and congratulate everyone involved with Minor Hockey in the Battlefords. Whether you are a player, a parent, a fan, a coach or a volunteer, it takes a great deal of effort and enthusiasm and I commend you for all your support! We can be proud of our teams as they travel to other communities to represent us, as they are truly young ambassadors of our community. I wish one and all a great hockey experience and remember to always have FUN. Mayor Derek Mahon Town of Battleford
Hockey plays a vital role at a young age By Dustin Saracini Sports Reporter
The benefits of playing sports at a young age are both tangible and intangible. John Wooden said that sports do not build character, they reveal it. I am a firm believer of this, learning first hand the positive effect a healthy and active lifestyle can have growing up. Sports, and more specifically, hockey, is a fun way to pass the time for some, and to others, it is a way of life. The hard work you put in inside the walls of an arena can transfer over into certain skills in the real world. The lessons you learn can be applied outside the glass of the rink, the bonds one makes over competition can last a lifetime. With this in mind, it becomes apparent that sports can play a big and boundless role in the development of a child. Staying healthy is just a small cog. Head coach of the Bantam AA Barons, Lee Ulmer, echoes these sentiments, and talks about the goals of his hockey program. “I feel it is very important to develop our youth through sports. It teaches them many life skills like hard work, discipline, respect and teamwork.” Ulmer continues, “We're trying to help develop the kids to not just be bet-
ter hockey players, but to be better people. I believe that hockey does have a positive effect in our players’ lives and what they learn will help them throughout their lives with their education, careers and relationships.” The dedication one instills into themselves, and their team, is not the only intangible aspect that can carry over into the classroom and to life itself. Discipline is vital on the ice — being smart with the puck, staying out of the penalty box, doing whatever you can to help your team. It is also a big part of what creates a successful human being. With discipline comes leadership. This value is yet another quality the sport of hockey can teach, whether it’s vocal, or letting your play do the talking. Universally, if one is trying to grow and develop in all aspects, there is one concept to work on: the repetition of practice. “I believe that learning to work hard through hockey is something players can take with them into the classroom, whether it’s your slap shot or math class, the harder you work at it the more you'll improve. You can't expect either to get better if you don't put in the time and hard work,” Ulmer says. In no better way is that

value taught and absorbed through sport. Waking up at 5 a.m. for the 6 a.m. practice, putting in work on the ice, learning, practicing, and applying the knowledge you have gained into a game, is a perfect example of how these lessons can seamlessly be transferred into the classroom. Shawn Robinson, who has had the privilege of managing and working closely with the AAA Battlefords Stars for the past 10 years, says their program continuously monitors the success of their athletes when it comes to their education. “The expectation we hold our players to regarding education is that their grades meet or exceed the
previous year. If you commit yourself to the game of hockey it should carry over to the classroom. Both our team governor and our assistant coach are educators. All schooling is closely monitored. Education and hockey go hand in hand.” Chairperson of the AAA Stars and head coach of the JPII football team, Bruce Yockey, understands the correlation between school and athletics. “There are very few athletes that will actually earn a living from sport, so it is extremely important that they do well in school to keep all options open for career choices. There are opportunities to combine success in sport with education and

might be meeting each other for the first time. A huge responsibility of the staff is to help bring the individual characteristics of each player out, and nurture the process of appreciating one another,” Hasselberg says. “No two players are alike and each bring unique qualities that will make up the identity of your team. This identity becomes your family. When coming to the rink is fun, the dressing room is a safe place to be who you are and when your players call each other brothers, sisters, family or friends, you have accomplished something special. This process cannot be accomplished without the willingness and co-operation of the entire group.” Sport provides an opportunity for players to engage in valuable and positive relationships with their teammates, while learning to respect one another and their coaches. It provides them with the freedom to be wrong when done so in a welcoming atmosphere. It gives athletes the chance to take risks, knowing that your teammate, or “brother,” will be there to back you up. It allows a player to become a member of a community. “Hockey definitely creates a common bond,” Robinson says. Continued on Page 3

earn scholarships, so our athletes understand that they must look after their education. We find that athletes who display a strong work ethic in the classroom also transfer that work ethic to athletics and therefore find success at both. These players often take leadership roles with our team.” Not only does sport and a successful life draw comparisons, but there are people within organizations, especially when players begin to work at higher levels, that are able to help athletes achieve their goals within a teaching atmosphere. We have talked about the growth of character and how the role of hockey can assist in developing a habit of hard work, but what about the social aspect? Growing up within a sport not only facilitates friendship, but it constructs a family-type atmosphere. There is something about going to “war” with your team, whether it’s on the ice, the field or the diamond, that establishes a deep-rooted connection. Head coach of the Battlefords North Stars, Kevin Hasselberg, says this bond is forged over a long campaign. “At the beginning of the season, you hit the ice with a group of players. Some may know each other and some

Hockey brings families together, forms friendships Continued from Page 2 “If you attend any initiation game or practice, you can see it's really a family affair from the start. Friendships are made on the ice and in the stands that blossom over time.” Ulmer believes much of the same. “I think that our team becomes our extended fam-
ily, we spend a lot of time together and we end up depending on each other for support throughout the season.” It is well established that sport plays a bigger role than previously thought. It develops a player into a successful individual while creating relationships that have the opportunity to last a lifetime.

in scoring. Young has put up tremendous numbers thus far with 16 goals and 34 assists, good for 11th in the SJHL. Coming into the year, the young forward had no idea he would be so successful, exceeding his own expectations. Braydon Buziak and Troy Gerein accompanied him with his move to the North Stars, both contributing on a nightly basis to the top ranked team in the SJHL. The Stars lost their second leading scorer in Brandon Lesko to the Flin Flon Bombers of the SJHL as well. Kaelan Holt also had a
These athletes can’t develop on their own, though. It is up to the coaches, who play a vital and influential role themselves, and who cannot be forgotten. “For days, months and years I will do my very best to push players to be the best they can be,” Coach Hasselberg says. “They may not always think I care and
at times they may think I'm crazy. However, when the message sinks in, eventually they do get it. My hope in the end, is that it makes the quality of life for that player better. I love all of my players, I would not be where I am today without any of them.” Coaches, too, set goals for themselves and for their players. But more than any-
thing, they enjoy showing up to the rink, working tirelessly to get the best out of their players. The role of sports and hockey are interchangeable. Some are tangible, some are intangible. The structural habits of an athlete can smoothly transition into the classroom. Sports construct an opportunity to
succeed, grow and learn in a welcoming environment organized by coaches who want the best for an athlete. They form an identity that lasts a lifetime. The lessons learned outside the rink are crucial, but some may argue that what goes on within the locker room walls, on the ice, or on the field, are equally important.
they hit the ice, showcasing their abilities on both sides of the puck. Once the season was over and the story came to an end with a second place finish in the playoffs, these players, among others, went their separate ways, leaving a giant hole and some big shoes to fill for the current roster. This was a test the 201516 AAA Stars have taken as a challenge, one they are running with. A young team with 15 rookies, including both goaltenders, have risen their game to a different level and are beginning to form a club that is turning heads here in the second half of the season. New top scorers have emerged, firstyear players have turned into veterans and confidence is
on display between each whistle. Keelan Saworski, among those top scorers this season, had the opportunity to play with the 2014 Stars and produce in their deep playoff run. He comments on the team mentality for this year’s squad before the season began. “Knowing that there is a lot of new guys and faces in the league and on the team, we wanted to hopefully make the playoffs. That’s what the expectations were coming in, knowing that we weren’t a team that will score a bunch of goals on a day-to-day basis. Everyone would have to do their part.” Saworski said. Just one year ago, the Battlefords AAA Stars were one of the best teams in the SMAAAHL, finishing in fourth place during the regular season with an impressive record of 28-15-0-1. The season provided a platform for numerous players to move on and play with teams across Saskatchewan at the Junior A level. President’s Message
Battlefords Minor Hockey Association
Once again, we find ourselves at our local rinks for another hockey season. Be it your child’s first or 10th hockey season, it helps to make the long, cold winter months pass quickly. Hockey is a significant part of life for all in our association. It’s a great opportunity to make new acquaintances, grow friendships and above all have fun. On behalf of the Battlefords Minor Hockey Association, I would like to thank the News Optimist for their continued support and commitment to minor hockey by publishing the Minor Hockey Week Special Edition. This is an excellent opportunity to showcase our players and the people who dedicate countless hours to our youth in the Battlefords and surrounding area. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our Coaches, Staff, and Directors for their hard work and dedication throughout the season. Their time and dedication to our Association ensures the overall success of the organization. Each year we are faced with numerous issues and challenges. Through the efforts of all involved we continue to move forward addressing and making improvements to the organization as a whole. With the establishment of our Recreation League, BMHA has seen the return of many players who had quit for a variety of reasons over the years. Recreation players are on the ice once per week and do not leave the city or have the commitment that the divisional players do. This league has been embraced by those participating and it has been an excellent addition to the organization and the game. The future looks very bright as the Recreation League continues to grow. The Bauer First Shift Program was once again awarded to the BMHA and enjoyed continued success. This program provided full hockey equipment at a deeply discounted price through Bauer to 45 children who have never before played hockey. Over the course of the 2 years we were able to introduce the game of hockey to 90 children from the Battlefords. Bauer has been a great resource and support to the development of hockey in the Battlefords and across Canada. On behalf of the Association, I would like to once again thank them for their continued support. In closing, it is important to recognize our coaches that teach, our parents who sacrifice and our officials who allow games to be played. There are numerous challenges ahead and as a board we ask for patience, support, and suggestions from our members as we continue to move forward. While the challenges are numerous, they are not insurmountable, progress continues to be made. Thank you for your patience and we eagerly look forward to the future. AAA Stars continue strong second half Continued from Page 3 Prior to the midway point of the campaign, the Stars’ playoff chances were dwindling out of reach, having not registered a point in five games. They were locked into 10th place and were dropping off the radar, quickly. However, a nineteen-day break away from hockey seemed to work wonders for the Stars, coming back from the holidays with a vengeance. “I think everyone is just playing simple, trying not to do too much. The guys came back with a different attitude,” Saworski said. “For some, the first half was a learning experience, trying to adjust to the league. Everyone now has the confidence that we can play with anyone in the league and everyone is doing their own part. Everyone believes in one another.” After rattling off five straight wins before splitting a series with the second place Moose Jaw Generals, the Battlefords reignited their drive for the post-season, currently sitting in seventh and in a solid position to make the dance at the end of the year. It started with a televised 3-2 win over the Saskatoon Blazers. Rookie goaltender and Edmonton Oil Kings
draft pick, Lance Alm, broke out as a goaltender that the Stars can rely on. After making 29 saves, none bigger than a breakaway stop late in the third to salvage the lead, the Battlefords began their dominance. Alm later put together a massive, 51-save performance against the Contacts. Jake Taylor has also done his part in the crease, walking away with a tremendous 28-save performance against Swift Current to keep the winning streak alive and well. “The goaltending has improved over the year,” Saworski continued, “they are playing with more confidence themselves. Each and every day I can tell they are getting better and they are letting us play instead of us worrying about the defence. We know they have our back in case we make a mistake out there and we know that we will get that big save late in the period.” The key word here is confidence. The black and white are chalk-full of it, and despite thinking they aren’t a team that can put the puck in the net, goal scorers are developing. Owen Lamb, who played 44 games for the 2014 Stars, now leads the crowded rookie lineup in scoring, ranked 15th in the league, and is becoming

a leader on the ice with his play. Both he and Saworski, ranked 19th, have had a fantastic second half thus far. Lamb has recorded one goal and five assists in six games, while Keelan has three goals and four helpers. Their linemate, Tanner Brewster, has also chipped
in with a mark and three assists. On the defensive end it is the 2001 born WHL prospect Luke Reid who has been playing above his years. The two-way defenceman leads the way for all blue-liners on the team in goals with five, while
veteran Dawson Bacon has done a great job quarterbacking the power play, and is second on the team with 14 helpers. No matter how you look at this season, the pieces are starting to fall into place for this young Stars team. The drive for the playoffs
is alive and new faces are not only contributing, but are thriving. If 2016 is any indication as to what this team is capable of, then the black and white has what it takes to be an absolute force the rest of the way, and may be looking at a deep playoff run.

Cameco Hockey Day Hockey Hall of Fame Inductees announced in Saskatchewan A dozen new members to be raises over $100,000 recognized in 2016 in Weyburn Committee will use funds for improvements to 1960s vintage arena After hosting Cameco Hockey Day in Saskatchewan last week, the organizing committee in Wadena is proud to announce a fundraising total of $101,111. The five-day hockey festival attracted large crowds and plenty of community support, which helped push the fundraising total above the committee’s goal of $80,000. “During a Wadena minor sports meeting last year the thought of hosting Cameco Hockey Day in Saskatchewan was brought up,” said Kent Armbruster, the chair of the local organizing committee. “We decided to apply for the event because our rink is bursting at the seams with 12 teams playing out of it. Built in the 1960s, it is starting to show its age. “Right from the time we found out we would host Cameco Hockey Day in Saskatchewan, we had volunteers stepping up to help. The amount of donations we received from local businesses also shows how great
a community this is.” The committee plans to use the money for improvements to the local arena.
The Saskatchewan Hockey Hall of Fame is pleased to announce this year’s list of Hall of Fame inductees. The 2016 inductees are: • Players: Orland Kurtenbach, Terry Harper, Bob Turner*, Colleen Sostorics • Builders: Dwight McMillan, Ron Rumball, Barry Mackenzie, Terry O’Malley • Official: Jules Swick* • Grassroots: Thomas (Tommy) E. Huston* • Teams: 1983-84 Weyburn Red Wings, 1956-57 Flin Flon Bombers (*Denotes inductee is deceased) “There are so many people from our province who have made outstanding contributions to this great game that choosing the inductee class each year is always difficult. With such a rich hockey history in Saskatchewan, we know we once again have a superb class to announce,” stated SHHOF board of director co-chairs Blair Davidson and Jack Brodsky. The 2016 induction dinner will be held Friday, July 8 at Crescent Point Place in Weyburn. Details of the
event will be officially released next month when tickets for the event will go on sale at the Weyburn Red Wings office. “On behalf of our entire Committee, I would like to say how excited we are to host this Saskatchewan Hockey Hall of Fame dinner this summer in Weyburn,” says Val Tribiger, chair of the host committee. “This is going to be a great event as we honour this excellent class of in-
ductees while highlighting our wonderful city.” The announcement of the event and the 2016 SHHOF Class of Inductees took place on at the Weyburn Red Wings game as part of Cameco Hockey Day in Saskatchewan celebrations taking place across the province last Saturday. The Saskatchewan Hockey Hall of Fame is located in Swift Current. For more information, please visit www. saskhockeyhalloffame.com
Changes over the last century and a half, but still Canada’s game Staff
In the modern era, ice hockey is played with space-age engineered skates, sticks and other equipment, but is has taken more than 150 years for it to evolve to that stage. According to the Canadian Encyclopedia stick and ball games were likely first played on ice in Northern England. British soldiers brought the tradition to Canada in the early 19th century. The word “hockey, according to the encyclopedia, is derived from the French “hoquet” (shepherd’s crook). Ice hockey as we now know it was first played in Montreal in 1875. The rules used were set out by J.G.A Creighton, a McGill University student. Substitution of a flat round wooden disc gave players more control. The first organized club, the McGill University Hockey Club, in Canada was formed in 1879. Early games were played on frozen ponds, rivers and canals. There were nine players per side on the ice and the puck could no be passed forward. Rugby rules were applied to develop on-side and face off provisions of the game. The encyclopedia cites speed and rough action for the popularity of the sport with strong, local rivalries developing rapidly. The first Stanley Cup game was played March 22, 1894. A crowd of 5,000 cheered as the Montreal AAA were victorious.
Hockey Trivia
In the beginning the idea of professional hockey was frowned up. Accepting money for playing was considered immoral, but over time more and more players accepted money secretly. The first overtly professional league was formed in 1903. In the decades since those formative years the rules and equipment have changed and
evolved, but as James Marsh notes in his article in the encyclopedia, “Hockey is Canada’s national game, the chief sports preoccupation of its male youth and still intimately woven into its self-image and mythology.” (the encyclopedia was published in 1985 and if writing today Marsh would no doubt add “female youth” to his post.
• Three 20-minute periods were introduced in 1910; • Six players on the ice, 1911; • A gradual move away from the prohibition on forward passing towards the end of that decade; • Passing allowed between bluelines, 1918; • Passing allowed among the three zones, 1929-30; • Red line added, 1943-44.
