Tips for designing a home gym
si milar to those found in theaters. Other lovers of the seventh art are fond of modular sofas because of their versatility. For a home theatre with a timeless style, avoid decorations associated with a specific era. Don’t choose boring colours, but don’t go overboard with accessories either. BASIC RULES For viewing that is both optimal and safe, experts recommend that spectators sit at a distance equal to double the diagonal measu re ment of the screen. In addition, the front speakers should be located at the height of the viewer’s ear when sitting. The screen should be at least 60 cm off the floor, and the subwoofer should be positioned under the screen. There; you’re all set. Enjoy the movie!

Going to the movies can have its fair share of annoyances; exorbitant ticket and snack prices, overly air-conditioned rooms, an noying neighbours and uncomfortable seats are just a few. For genuine movie buffs, the entire experience can rapidly go downhill. The solution? A home theatre. Home theatres are usually set up in the basement of a home. That’s because this area of the house has certain advantages: • The ceilings are low and therefore easier to soundproof. • Low natural light helps recreate the atmosphere of a real movie theatre. • A basement can be decorated with a theme that’s different from the rest of the home. Many movie fans pre fer individual seats
A home theatre allows you to avoid the downsides of going out to the movies.

What’s a movie buff without a home theatre?
A home gym you enjoy using will motivate you to train more often.
There are many reasons why people don’t get to exercise at a gym on a regular basis. The parents of young children, shift workers and people who live far from urban areas aren’t often found in fitness centres. Other people don’t like the atmosphere of these places, which is sometimes very competitive, or they feel uncomfortable about exercising in public. For all these reasons, a home gym is an excellent option for anyone who wants to keep fit. BUYING YOUR EQUIPMENT It is possible to create a home gym without it costing you an arm and a leg. Retailers offer a wide range of bodybuilding and cardiovascular exercise machines for all budgets. A less expensive option is to buy used equipment. You’ll find a wide range of options in the classified ads section of your local newspaper or through an online classifieds website.
PLAN AND DECORATE All too often, people set up a personal training space without giving it much thought. They randomly pile exercise ma chines and accessories into the basement and then over the following weeks or months, they feel guilty because they’re using them less and less often. To stay motivated and exercise on a regular basis, attractive surroundings are a must. Get started by looking for inspiration from pictures of private gyms found in decorating magazines and on the Internet. Paint the walls in bright colours and hang some mirrors. Let your creativity run wild by putting up wall murals or wallpaper with original patterns. Another great idea is to install a chalkboard on which you can write your results and a few words of encouragem ent.

Watching the dancing flames while sipping your favourite drink is a great way to relieve your stress after yet another hectic day. Of course, no electrical appliance can truly replace the smell, movement and sound of a natural wood fire. However, an electric fireplace is an economical option that works wonders. Here are its four major advantages. 1) Unlike other types of fireplaces, it’s suitable for all kinds of homes. There’s no need for a chimney or vent with an electric fireplace; that is why it’s the perfect choice for small apartments and condos. 2) There’s no need to call on the services of a professional to have it installed. Just

like a heater, an electric fireplace operates from a wall socket. The process is simple: buy it, unpack it, plug it in and enjoy your new purchase without missing a beat. 3) You control the temperature. Just select a low, medium or high heat, depending on the season. Enjoying a cozy fire on a cool summer evening is always nice. Don’t forget the eco-friendly nature of this type of fireplace — no emissions and no pollution. 4) An electric fireplace is a decorative element that adds style to your home. Since they come in a wide selection of sty les, sizes and colours, you’ll definitely find an electric fireplace that complements your dec or. It’s also extremely versatile and can be installed on the floor or on the wall of your liv ing room, dining room, bedroom, etc.
In addition to being attractive, electric fireplaces don’t pollute.
Interior design and decorating software allows you to visualize all the possibilities and all the different stages of your next project. These professional tools are available on the market at affordable prices. Sometimes you can even download them for free. USER-FRIENDLY TOOLS You don’t need to be a professional decorator to use this type of software. Some of them are designed for the general public and are fairly simple to use. When you become familiar with how they work,
you can spend hours looking at the many design options. You’d like to see the effect a massive chandelier would have in your living room? You’re curious to know if bright red kitchen cabinets will overwhelm the room? With interior decorating software, you can try classical concepts or completely outrageous styles before you invest in any materials. VIRTUAL LIBRARIES With the virtual libraries included in interior design and decorating software, you can select and position furniture, appliances and fixtures. Most software allows you to simply click and drag objects onto the floor plan so you can see the results instantaneously. In addition, you can select textures, colours, furnishings and floor coverings at will. Some plans are two dimensional, while others are three dimensional. The latter is the most realistic way of imagining yourself in your newly decorated room. Planning your new decor with the help of user-friendly software is a breeze.

Solid and stylish staircases to dream about
Staircases can be more than just functional; they can be the centerpiece of a home or an office building. They help us to get from the basement to the attic or from the sidewalk to the front door. A famous Led Zeppelin song even tells us that we can buy a stairway to heaven! SAFE STAIRS Building a staircase
that’s beautiful as well as safe isn’t a job for just anyone. For a sturdy staircase, the worker must consider not only its esthetic characteristics, but also make sure that it meets the strict criteria of building codes. Thus, for each project, very precise measurements have to be taken for the stringers, treads and risers. A poorly designed staircase, or one that isn’t installed properly, entails
risk of injury to those who use it.
THE IDEAL STAIRCASE Manufacturers and stair installers offer models for all tastes and all budgets. Traditional materials include wood, wrought iron and concrete. That said, designers also favour stain less steel, stone and glass to give a more contemporary and
elegant look to this major architectural feature. To give it a more personal touch, various accessories can be added that will turn your new staircase in to a key decorative element in your home. Fancy a new staircase? Will it be straight, spiraled or with landings? Let an expert find you the model that will take you straight to heaven.
Woods that blend with any decor
Wood is a highly versatile material that can be used in building or for beautifying all types of homes. Nature has given us an almost infinite variety of tree species to work with. Indeed, more than 65,000 species have been identified around the world. Here are some of the kinds of wood most commonly used in construction and renovation projects. OAK A symbol of longevity, the majestic oak can easily live for over 500 years in the wild. Under ideal conditions, it can survive for almost 1,000 years. Oak trees produce a wood that is easy to cut and that rarely cracks. In addition, it is heavy and shock resistant. Thanks to these qualities, oak is often used for flooring, structural frames and stairs. A TRIO OF PINES 1) White pine is a fast grower that reaches up to 90 metres high and can have a diameter of 2.5 metres. White pine is a superior quality wood that’s appreciated in cabinetmaking and carpentry. 2) Red pine is named for the colour of its bark, which ranges from red to pink. Stronger than white pine, it is often used to make wide-plank flooring and utility poles. 3) Jack pine is a common conifer whose knots give a nice appearance to planks. It is often used for panelling and siding. MAPLE Did you know that according to legend, the famous
Locally made, industry leading, low maintenance
pvc windows. ultimate protection for all of our seasons. PVC Warranty of 20 years. Sealed units warranty of 10 years. Hardware has a limited lifetime warranty.
Trojan horse was built of maple? Maple is a species found around the world. Its wood is divided into two categories: hardwood and soft wood. Hard maple wood is heavy and valued for its sturdiness. Soft maple wood, on the other hand, is used for purposes that require less strength. POPULAR TYPES OF WOOD In the field of interior decoration, rare or precious woods are in big demand at the moment. For a unique look, designers love the sublime beauty of ebony, mahogany, sandalwood, pink ivory, zebrawood, amaranth and olive. These exotic woods are more expensive than the common kinds, but their rich colours and fine grain are well worth the price. Bamboo is an affor dable, elegant alternative and it is also an ecofriendly choice. Reclaimed barn wood and driftwood are also experiencing their hour of glory. Sometimes grey, sometimes bleached, these relics are like treasure to those who know how to breathe new life into them. DECORATING WITH WOOD: DON’T OVERDO IT! Whatever the type, wood immediately adds warmth to a home’s atmosphere. However, unless you want to create a country cottage atmosphere, be sure not to overdo it. In other words, don’t go crazy by mixing several different types and colours. Use a harmonious blend of woods and stains to create a coherent decor for living the good life. When in doubt, don’t hesitate to call in a professional decorator.

The timeless elegance of stone
For thousands of years, natural stone has been used in building projects. Elegant and timeless, it inspires artists, architects and writers from all backgrounds. In fact, the Spanish poet Federico Lorca wrote that “stone is a shoulder on which to bear Time.” Would you like to integrate stone into your next renovation project? Even though there is a wide choice of natural stone, some kinds have been proven over time for embellishing homes — these days we see it in kitchen countertops, fireplaces, stairs, walls, patios and as exterior siding. GRANITE AND BASALT Basalt is the most abundant volcanic rock, in terms of volume, on Earth’s surface. It is resistant to water and corrosion and is used in all phases of architectural construction, from flooring to siding. It is truly an allpurpose stone. Granite, which is strong and durable, is ideal for countertops and floors. MARBLE AND SLATE Renowned for its use by world-famous sculptors, marble can also be used for more practical ends such as floors and countertops. Slate, on the other hand, is a grained stone used for memorial stones and decorative surfaces. In construction, slate is also very practical as roofing material. Because of its strength and its unique layered structure, masons can separate it into thin sheets. LIMESTONE AND SANDSTONE Limestone is a very pale stone used in building and sculpting, while sandstone is characterized by extreme hardness and has excellent resistance to chemical or
climatic stress. Sandstone is used in construction, sculpture, the manufacture of grinding wheels and paving stones. STONE IS SYNONYMOUS WITH PRESTIGE Stone adds elegance, simplicity and warmth to any room. Put simply, you just can’t go wrong when choosing granite for your bathroom, slate for a work surface or marble for a countertop. While synonymous with wealth and luxury, stone also brings a natural ambiance into stately homes. Just a touch here and there is all that’s needed to instantly give an upmarket look to your residence. KILL TWO BIRDS WITH ONE STONE When the time comes to purchase natural stone for your home, take the time to learn about its proper installation and maintenance. In-store specialists at home renovation stores can suggest which products you need (grout, sealer, cleaner, trowel, etc.) and the best techniques to use. You could always entrust the task to a professional if you don’t like the idea of turning yourself into a tiler or mason for a day. Sometimes urban and contemporary, sometimes rustic and bucolic, stone is always unique. It has no equal when it comes to beautifying a home, and you will surely impress your neighbours with your exquisite taste.
How to prepare a disaster emergency kit
No one is immune to extreme situations. Prolonged power outages, ice storms, floods, tornadoes and earthquakes are events that cause severe stress, especially for people who aren’t properly prepared. For your peace of mind, it’s a good idea to have an emergency kit at the ready. THREE DAYS The three-day rule is the foundation of preparing a disaster emergency kit. In disaster or emergency situations, rescue teams are deployed on a priority basis. Thus, in order to survive until rescuers come to your aid, you have to be sure you have enough supplies on hand. YOUR EMERGENCY KIT Regardless of the type of disaster you might have to
cope with, providing yourself with an emergency kit can save you a lot of trouble. First, stock up with enough bottled fresh water for each member of your household — that’s about two litres per person per day. You should also stock up on non-perishable food, such as energy bars and canned food. Ideally, the rest of your kit should contain: • A flashlight • Candles and a lighter, which you keep in a waterproof container • A radio with extra batteries • A first-aid kit • Personal hygiene products • A change of clothing

Using the services of a decorating professional can save you time as well as money. These specialists are the perfect solution when designing a new dining room or giving your entire home a makeover seems like an overwhelming prospect.
DESIGNER OR DECORATOR? Interior designers plan and create interior living spaces for their clients according to their needs. They can design minor renovations and organize the construction de tails. They can also plan and organize storage solutions and furniture choices. De co ra tors, on the other hand, add to a designer’s plans by suggesting materials, floor coverings, colours, window coverings and decoration in general. During the first client meeting, these specialists will quickly work to ensure they have all the information required to carry out their work. They will probably take a multitude of measurements and photos of your existing decor and the space to be modified. They will also be ready to discuss your budget, preferences and sche dule. The best way to tell if a decorating professional is going to be a fit is to see if they: • Listen carefully • Never try to impose their choices • Ask numerous questions • Express themselves clearly and ensure you understand what they’re suggesting If you’re comfortable with your chosen specialist and feel that you can trust him or her, you’ve probably found the right person to create the look you want.
Lofts as inspirational living spaces
In the real estate world, the term “loft” is often mistakenly used to describe all sorts of different housing. So why not take a few moments of your time to explore this unique type of accommodation and sort the fact from fiction. By definition, lofts are apartments in buil dings that have changed vocation. In other words, they’re found in old factories, warehouses, workshops and even in old churches and cha pels. Since they don’t have any
wall divisions, lofts have a completely open floor plan. In addition, lofts often come with huge windows, allowing natural light to flood the space. The esthetic appeal of lofts is that they re tain architectural elements from their previous function, such as metal beams, vaul ted ceilings or raw materials (concrete, barn wood, etc.). Lofts are much appreciated by creative types and young professionals and are also

inspiring places for interior decorators. Since all areas of the apartment are visible at one glance, the challenge is to create an integrated, harmonious atmosphere. Given the impressively high ceilings of most loft spaces, it’s quite common for a mezzanine to be built into them. Enhanced by a beautiful custom-made staircase, this kind of addition allows the owner to benefit from extra living space.

The sheer bliss of a central vacuum
PHOTO: JUPITERIMAGES / THINKSTOCK
Let’s be honest; vacuuming is a chore that many of us avoid doing until the dust and dirt are just too hard to ignore. To simplify this dreaded task, you might want to think about ditching your traditional canister or upright vacuum cleaner for a “central vac” system. HOW THEY WORK A central vacuum system includes a power unit and dust reservoir, a network of ducts, wall outlets and various accessories. When the vacuuming can’t be put off any longer, you simply plug a flexible hose, equipped with a handle on one end and a brush on the other, into one of the outlets.
Then with a quick flick of a switch the power unit starts up and you can move from room to room with only the hose to pull along behind you. You: 1. Dust: 0. CHARACTERISTICS Central vacuums are easy to install and are more powerful and much quieter than portable vacuum cleaners. Moreover, this type of system is much less cumbersome than a traditional vacuum cleaner — those things bump continuously against furniture and door frames, not to mention they have power cords that are never long enough. INSTALLATION Call in a professional if you decide to install a central vacuum system in your home. This specialist will make holes in your walls in order to install so c kets and piping on each floor. The power unit is typi cally placed in the basement, well away from the living areas of your home. COSTS Central vacuum cleaners usually come with a price tag of between $500 and $1,500, depending on the brand, model, power and quality of the components and accessories. One last advantage to think about is that a central vacuum cleaner is conside red an asset when selling your home.
Mosaics bring ancient Rome back to life
The mosaic as an art form and architectural embellishment is thousands of years old; its heyday was during the Roman Empire. At that time, the wealthiest people had huge mosaics worked into their floors. They were built so well that many of them can still be admired to this day. THE WONDERS OF MOSAICS Mosaic art consists of assembling “tesserae” — colourful pieces of stone, glass, enamel, marble or ceramic — to form patterns. In today’s homes, mosaics are common in bathrooms and in backsplashes. Their attractiveness, durability, ease of cleaning and waterproof nature make them a great choice for kitchens and bathrooms. You could also insert an artistic mosaic

into the floor of your entrance hall, just as the Romans did. In addition to becoming a topic of conversation for your visitors, this original twist can add value to your home. DO-IT-YOURSELF MOSAICS If you’re reasonably good with your hands and are tempted to undertake a craft project, why not try the mosaic technique? Bookstores stock a variety of reference books about this art. You’ll also discover a multitude of guides and instructional videos on the Web. Mosaics allow you to decorate objects that you want to incorporate into your decor, including such things as tabletops, trays, serving dishes, candlesticks, vases and picture frames. Let your imagination go wild; the possibilities are endless.
Some surprising facts about hi-tech toilets
On average, a person uses a toilet seven times a day, or about 2,500 times a year. We terners are increasingly familiar with the modern dual-flush, automatic flush or low-flow toilets. However, for several years now, Asian technology has been making this humble natural experience much more sophisticated. ROBOTIC TOILETS The Japanese are technological champions, and their innovations have also extended into the realm of toilets. Being confronted with a futuristic Japanese toilet for the first time can definitely cause some confusion for the uninitia ted. Take a look at some of these technological improvements: • Body weight detection • Heated seat • Adjustable shower head for cleaning private parts • A variety of pre-recorded sounds to mask bodily noises • Music player • Hot-air dryer • Odour absorber • Perfume diffuser • Automatic raising and
lowering of the bowl’s height • Antibacterial seat • Self-cleaning bowl Japanese high-tech toilets are ideal for limiting the spread of viruses and bacteria, as people no longer need to use their hands to wipe themselves. The absence of toilet paper is also a worthy environmental feature. In short, even if they’re still a bit marginal at the moment, you can bet that these hightech toilets will soon seduce the Ca nadian marketplace.

Go wild with special paints
Paint retailers have a wildly di verse ar ray of choice when it comes time to pick out a tone or texture for your home de corating project. Here are three new types of paint to tempt you.
WATER REPELLENT PAINT
With the so-called “lotus effect,” water slides over the surface of this paint, washing away any dirt. This phenomenon means that water repellent paint could be called selfcleaning. Not sur prisingly, it makes a lot of sense to use this paint primarily in

rooms with high humidity or that need cleaning on a re gular basis, such as bathrooms or kitchens. This versatile and highly durable pro duct can also be used outdoors.
CHALKBOARD PAINT
Applying chalkboard paint lets you trans form any object or surface into a blackboard. With some chalk and a section of wall covered with chalkboard paint, you can draw pictures, post your to-do lists and a weekly menu, create a play area for the children or draw up a
family calendar that can be easily changed every month. Note that it doesn’t have to be a blackboard; this kind of paint comes in a wide variety of colours.
MAGNETIC PAINT
This unique paint is filled with ferrous particles, allowing you to transform all types of surfaces into magnetic boards. After applying the ma gnetic paint, you can overlay other colours, wallpaper and even chalkboard paint. Then you can use magnets to attach notes, drawings, photos and maybe even some sweet, romantic messages.
