Mayor’s Message

There are many advantages to having kids participate in team sports such as minor hockey. They learn about teamwork, building trust with their teammates, dealing with stress, and setting goals – all valuable skills that kids need to develop to be successful throughout life and develop life long friendships. Kids active in sports develop confidence and learn how to deal with winning and losing with grace. Research has shown that children who participate in sports perform better in school. Hard work, dedication by players, coaches, parents, officials, volunteers and fans are what make minor hockey in North Battleford such a great success! Best wishes and remember to keep your head up and your stick on the ice.

Ryan Bater Mayor

Mayor’s Message On Behalf of Council and the residents of Battleford, I would like to extend a sincere THANK YOU to the many volunteers who contribute to the success of minor hockey each year. Whether you are a coach, assistant coach, trainer, manager, official or a behind-the-scenes volunteer; I commend you for the support in promoting teamwork and fair play throughout Minor Hockey in Battleford. To the families who brave early mornings, winter weather and cold rinks to cheer on their teams, a huge THANKS. To all the players; continue to play the game you love and remember to always have fun and play fair as each of you are young ambassadors of Battleford whether on the road or at home. Have a great hockey season. Mayor Ames Leslie Town of Battleford

Checking in on AAA Stars alumni By Lucas Punkari Sports Reporter

When defenceman Luke Reid announced his commitment to the University of North Dakota Fighting Hawks men’s hockey program earlier this month, it was another feather in the cap for the Battlefords AAA Stars organization. Although it’s rare to see a player as young as Reid commit to one of the best teams in college hockey while playing in the Saskatchewan Midget AAA Hockey League, it speaks volumes about the Stars program and what they’ve been able to do over the last few years. Here’s a look down memory lane with the AAA Stars as we check in with some of the players who are now plying their trade elsewhere. Kenzie Arnold (201516 – 17 points) – After one year with the Stars, Arnold is now in his rookie season with the SJHL’s Nipawin Hawks where he has four points in 31 games. He’s also getting the chance to play alongside his older brother Brandan, who was reassigned to the Hawks after two seasons

with the WHL’s Swift Current Broncos. Dawson Bacon (201316 – 40 points) – Bacon was a steady force on the blueline for the Stars for three seasons, and is now playing out of the province. After starting his junior career with the Lloydminster Bobcats of the AJHL, he’s now suiting up for the MJHL’s Dauphin Kings. Tyler Baier (2014-15 – 20 points) – Baier has made a few trips to the Civic Centre in recent years, as he’s now in his second season with the Yorkton Terriers. After putting up 29 points in 56 games a year ago, he has 17 points in his sophomore campaign. Spencer Bast (2012-15 – 139 points) – After an impressive Midget AAA career, Bast is now playing in the Western Hockey League. He had 23 points over the course of two seasons with the Kamloops Blazers before he was traded to the Moose Jaw Warriors earlier this month. Josh Bly (2012-14 – 105 points) – Following stints with the BCHL’s West Kelowna Warriors

and the Kindersley Klippers of the SJHL, Bly is having a career year in his final Junior A campaign. After averaging a point per game in 29 contests for the Klippers, he was traded to the Nipawin Hawks in December and has 17 points in 14 games for his new team to put him in a tie for eighth in SJHL scoring. Tanner Brewster (2015-16 – 30 points) – After starting his junior career with the Lloydminster Bobcats, Brewster was traded to the La Ronge Ice Wolves earlier this year and has three goals in 27 games. Braydon Buziak (201415 – 18 points) – Following a season with the Battlefords North Stars, Buziak was able to crack the roster for the WHL’s Regina Pats this year. He has nine points in 29 games for the Pats, who are considered to be one of the favourites to win the Memorial Cup. Colby Cave (2009-11 – 72 points) – The former captain of the WHL’s Swift Current Broncos now finds himself in another leadership role as he’s the

assistant captain for the Providence Bruins of the American Hockey League. After putting up 29 points last year, Cave has 20 points in 39 games during his second season with the Boston Bruins’ organization. Ashton Clark (2011-13 – 34 points) – A year after winning the SJHL title with the Melfort Mustangs, Clark is now playing in the MJHL. After putting up 12 points in 11 games with the Portage Terriers, he was dealt to the Dauphin Kings and is second in team scoring with 29 points. Kaleb Dahlgren (201315 – 64 points) – Dalhgren is in his second season with the Notre Dame Hounds, where he has put up 29 points in 88 career SJHL games. Jordan Fransoo (2008-09 – five points) The former WHL blueliner is now in his third season with the Saskatchewan Huskies. He has six points in 16 games this season for the Huskies, who are once again one of the top teams in U Sports. Derek Frater (2014-

15 – 15 points) – In his second season with the La Ronge Ice Wolves, Frater’s 18 points is the most by any player on the team after Jared Blaquiere and Tristen Elder were traded earlier this year. Troy Gerein (2012-15 – 60 points) – The Wilkie product is having a solid sophomore season for the Battlefords North Stars, as he has 18 points in 40 games. Ben Hiltz (2015-16 – 23 points) – After starting the 2016-17 season with the WHL’s Red Deer Rebels, Hiltz is now playing for his hometown Weyburn Red Wings and has five points in 31 games. Kaelan Holt (201415 – 49 points) – Following a 27-point campaign last year, Holt is having a breakout season for the SJHL’s Estevan Bruins, as he has 37 points in 38 games. Casey Knight (2009-10 – 34 points) – The St. Walburg native is in his senior season with the Toronto Varsity Blues, and seems set to achieve a new career high in points after scoring two goals and picking up four assists in 17 games

this season. Michael Korol (201314 – 12 points) – Korol has spent the last three seasons with the SJHL’s Humboldt Broncos and has 19 points in 28 games this year. Braden Lacoursiere (2012-13 – 21 points) – After starting his SJHL career with the North Stars, the Unity defenceman has spent the last three seasons with the Flin Flon Bombers. He’s currently enjoying his best year to date with the Bombers as he’s put up 20 points in 38 games. Josh Laframboise (2013-14 – 61 points) – The 2014 SMAAAHL most valuable player award winner has spent the last three seasons in the BCHL. After suiting up for the Penticton Vees and Salmon Arm Silverbacks, Laframboise is now with the Trail Smoke Eaters and has 44 points in 40 games. Owen Lamb (201415 – 58 points) – Lamb has made the jump to the SJHL with his hometown North Stars this season and has adapted well to his new surrondings with 12 points in 35 games. Minor Hockey in the Battlefords

Berggren enjoying time as head coach of Sharks By Lucas Punkari Sports Reporter

If you want an in-depth description of the journey on the Yellowhead Highway from Saskatoon to the Battlefords, Gary Berggren is the person you should turn to. The head coach of the Saskatchewan Female Midget AAA Hockey League’s Battlefords Sharks has made that drive on a regular basis over the last few months in his first season behind the bench. “I leave at 4:30 p.m. about three times a week before practice, and then when I get back home, it’s close to 11 p.m.,” Berggren said. “It’s a bit of a long haul, especially when you have road trips on the weekends as well, but it’s totally worth it.” After serving as an assistant coach for the Sharks a year ago following a lengthy stint coaching minor hockey in Saskatoon, Berggren took charge of things behind the bench for the SFMAAAHL team during the off-season. “The experience has

been a good one,” Berggren said. “There’s been a few things that have been a little bit different than I’ve expected, but things have been rolling along for us. “There’s the steps forward and the steps backwards that you get with any team, but overall, we’ve been getting better and better as the season has gone on. A lot of that has to do with the players on the team getting more accustomed to the systems that I’m running and our newer faces getting more used to the league itself.” Berggren was getting used to things as well, as one of his early challenges was coming to grips to the added responsibility that comes with being the head coach. “When you’re an assistant coach, you feel like you’re in the shadows a little bit,” Berggren said. “When you become the head coach, you start to make more decisions and it starts to feel at times that every little thing makes a difference with the team.” Luckily for him, having a year of experience with the Sharks helped with the

transition. “Having that season where I worked with Ashley Rafuse was huge for me,” Berggren said. “She did a great job of helping me out as I got used to a new league and I learned a lot from her that I’ve been able to use as I help to build the team this year. “I got to see how the league is run and what it takes to be successful at

President’s Message

Battlefords Minor Hockey Association It is hard to believe that we are into the second half of our 2016/2017 hockey season! Time flies when you are having fun! The Battlefords Minor Hockey Association Board of Directors has been working on bringing positive changes to our Association. Development has been a major focus for us. This season, we brought in Martin Smith to assist with the development of players and Coaches, both on and off the ice. We have also expanded our League teams to include both Novice & Atom divisions. This has allowed us to ensure development of our young players at both the house team and League team levels, but also allowing our parents the flexibility to choose their commitment and travel. We also implemented SHA’s Cross Ice Program for our Initiation players. The cross ice program has been instrumental in allowing our youngest players to enhance their core skills of starts, stops, turns, puck control and shooting. BMHA is also proud to see our numbers increasing in our Bantam & Midget divisions. We are seeing some great results in the League standings in all divisions. We have seen an exciting increase in the number of Female players that we have registered as well. We are also very proud to have a Female Midget AA team representing the Battlefords this year. With the perseverance of Mandy Lehman we have developed a Female development program that allows for our girls to get together and build camaraderie while strengthening their hockey skills. BMHA will also continue to support the development of our Officials and to encourage all those interested in the program. We were honoured to be chosen to host the Bauer First Shift program again for the 3rd year! It is our pleasure to help Bauer & Canadian Tire introduce the love of hockey to 6-10 year olds! We are proud to have brought back a standard set of hockey apparel so that we are all representing the Battlefords Barons brand! BMHA has experienced some challenges this year, but we are committed to improving all aspects of minor hockey in the Battlefords. I would like to now recognize our hard working Board of Directors, Coaches, Volunteers, and Staff. Each of these individuals work incredibly hard and with such passion to ensure that we continue our goals and visions of the Battlefords Minor Hockey Association. A big thank you to all the dedicated parents who ensure that these kids are always looked after, whether they are theirs or not! They say it takes a Village, and there is no exception when it comes to minor hockey. With all the different changes, we expected to see some growing pains. However, it is not anything that we can not overcome as we all continue to work together with the continued common goal of succeeding-being competitive around the province with more kids enjoying hockey. I also wanted to say thank you to the Jumpstart and KidSport programs for always being there to help us keep kids in hockey! Best of luck to all our teams heading to Playoffs and Provincials!

this level. When you become a head coach, you take many of the things that you learn along the way and mold it into your own style, which is what I’ve done here.” Even when he’s not at the Battleford Arena, Berggren spends the majority of his time figuring out how to make the Sharks better. “It feels like I do the majority of my work away from the ice or when I’m

on road trips,” Berggren laughed. “It ranges from working on strategies for the games, things to do in practices, recruiting for upcoming seasons and other things that need to be done with the team. It gets pretty busy.” Since coming to the Sharks organization, Berggren has become a passionate supporter of the overall level of talent in the

SFMAAAHL. “Every team has good players,” Berggren said. “If you look at the way the league has been going, each of the eight teams has two or three really good lines. “As a result of all the good talent in the league, you see a lot of good players at the Midget AA and Bantam levels now, which is something that I’ve noticed lately while watching some of the teams there.” As the Sharks gear up for the playoffs, Berggren has some short and long term goals as the team’s head coach. “When it comes to the team we’re really just focusing on the next game,” Berggren said. “The post-season’s always a big deal, but you never want to start looking so far ahead.” “Personally, I’d like to stay with the Sharks for the next little while and help to build the team up. There’s a great organization here and with the number of young players that we’ve brought in this season, I’m really excited to see them grow both on and off the ice in the years to come.”

Peterson commits to McKendree University By Lucas Punkari As 2016 drew to a close, Dakota Peterson got some exciting news about her future. The Battleford product found out that she had received an opportunity to play for the McKendree University Bearcats women’s hockey team in Lebanon, Ill. starting this fall. “It’s a really exciting time for me,” Peterson said. “I’m really happy to be going down to the States and experience something new, while also getting the chance to play hockey while I’m studying at school.” Peterson, who is a Grade 12 student at North Battleford Comprehensive High School, wanted to play hockey at a post-secondary level but she wasn’t sure where to start in terms of finding the right school to attend. In the end, a conversation away from the rink proved to be a pivotal turning point. “A friend of mine told me about an organization called NCSA (Next College Student Athlete) that helps athletes get connected with schools in the United States and Canada,” Peterson said. “After I got connected with them, I got in contact with a few schools about playing hockey. “After some thinking, I

ended up settling on McKendree. They are a new program and I’ll be able to make my mark there on the team right away while also getting used to everything down in the United States.” The Bearcats, who have an 9-8 record this year, compete in the American Collegiate Hockey Association and go up against programs like the Minnesota Golden Gophers and the Wisconsin Badgers. “I’ll be all over the place in the next few years,” Peterson said. “They travel everywhere from Colorado to Ohio, so it will be a great way to see a lot of the country.” Peterson will also have the chance to be in the program that she wanted to study at the school, which is located a half-hour east of St. Louis, Mo. “I’ll be getting a bachelor of science degree and I’ve declared for pre-veterinary medicine,” Peterson said. “That way, I’ll be able to transfer to any school in Canada after I finish up my four years down there.” Peterson is the second player on the Sharks roster to have committed to a post-secondary program this season. Forward Jordan Kulbida will be playing in the U Sports ranks as a member of the Regina Cougars next year. “It says quite a lot for our program to have both Dakota and Jordan head-

Continued from Page 2 Brandon Lesko (201315 – 80 points) – Following a 26-point rookie campaign, Lesko is fifth in scoring for the Flin Flon Bombers this season with 32 points in 33 games. The Hafford native also got the chance to play for Canada West at the World Junior A Challenge in Bonnyvile, Alta. in December. Connor Manegre (2013-15 – eight points) – After playing for the Grand Forks Border Bruins in B.C., Manegre has become a strong physical prescence on both defence and offence for the North Stars. The Meota product has six points in 31 games in his first season in the SJHL. Logan Nachtegaele (2013-14 – 10 points) – The North Battleford native is an assistant captain for the North Stars in his third season with his hometown team and has set a career high in points this year with 12 points in 30 games. His cousin Jayden

Nachtegaele has also played for the North Stars this year and is currently suiting up for the Saskatoon Quakers, but can be called back up to the North Stars as an affilated player. Zach Nedelec (201112 – six points) – After playing with the Saskatoon Contacts for a season and spending the last three years with the La Ronge Ice Wolves, Nedelec returned to North Battleford earlier this month in a trade that saw him and fellow Edam product Jared Blaquiere join the North Stars. Alex Pernitsky (201314 – 25 points) – Following a trip to the RBC Cup final last year with the AJHL’s Lloydminster Bobcats, the Unity defenceman is in his freshman campaign with the NCAA’s Colorado College Tigers. He’s played in 13 games this season and is still looking for his first collegiate point. Nicholas Riemer (2013-14 – eight points) – Riemer is in his third season with the Nipawin Hawks and is on pace to

ing to schools next year,” Sharks head coach Gary Berggren said. “It gives our younger players someone that they can look up to on the team and something that they can strive for when it comes to the future. “For Dakota to have the chance to see so much of a new country while playing hockey is something

that I’m sure she’s going to remember for years to come.” Peterson was the first player to be part of the Bearcats’ recruiting class for the 2017-18 season, and is currently the only member of the women’s hockey program from Saskatchewan. “It would be really exciting if there’s some more

players coming from close to home,” Peterson said. “With that said, I’m really looking forward to meeting some new people from other places, and there will be a few Canadians that are on the team already, so I won’t be too alone there.” Heading into a pair of road games last weekend against the Notre Dame Hounds in Wilcox, Peterson tied for second in team scoring with 10 points in 19 games. In her rookie campaign last season, she hade six points in 28 games. “I’ve become a lot more comfortable with the puck this year and I’m not as timid as I was before,” Peterson said. “There were times last year where I would get rid of the puck right away and it seemed like I was just skating on the ice. Now, thanks to having a bit more confidence, I’ve been able to take more shots and have a lot more speed when I’m moving the puck around.” Peterson’s confidence in her sophomore campaign with the Sharks is something that her coach has noticed as well. “She’s become much more of a leader on the team,” Berggren said. “She’s really driving hard to the net and she’s really become much more of an all-around player. “When you come into the league, there’s a bit of an adjustment period

where you have to get used to the speed that you face on a regular basis. Dakota was able to get through that, and she’s been doing a great job for us.” With only a couple of weeks left in the regular season, Peterson will be drawing off the things she’s learned over the last couple of years to help the Sharks’ younger players get ready for the playoffs. “We have a number of new players on the team this year, so I wasn’t really sure what to expect when the season started,” Peterson said. “Right away, I was able to see that everyone has a lot of talent and it’s been fun to see them get better as the year has gone on. “Consistency is the biggest thing that we’re working on right now. We have some tough stretches at times during games, but we’re counting to build on the little things in order to get better.” On the personal side of things, Peterson will be using her last few weeks in the Midget AAA ranks to prepare herself for what will happen this fall. “Once school starts, it’s going to be pretty busy with my classes and all of the travel that we’re going to have,” Peterson said. “I’ve already started to focus on making sure I have a perfect balance with my school work and my time on the ice.”

set a career-high in points as he already has 13 points in 37 games. He had 13 points a year ago in 51 games. Kyle Salaway (2014-15 – 45 points) – After averaging a little over a point per game with the Stars, Salaway has spent the last two years with the Virden Oil Capitals of the MJHL. He has 24 points in 43 games this season. Blake Tatchell (200809 – 51 points) – The 2012

SJHL most valuable player award winner had a stellar four-year collegiate career for the Alaska-Anchorage Seawolves, where he had 103 points in 142 games. He’s now in his first professional season with the ECHL’s Wichita Thunder, where he has eight points in 25 games. Rylan Toth (2012-14 – 19 wins) – Following two seasons in goal for the Stars, Toth made the jump to the WHL’s Red Deer

Rebels and he helped the team reach the Memorial Cup semifinals as tournament hosts last year. He’s now the starting netminder for the Seattle Thunderbirds and has a 20-14-0 record with a 2.77 goals against average in his final season of junior hockey. Brock Weston (201112 – 14 points) – The Maidstone native wrapped up his junior career on a winning note last season as

he won the MJHL championship as a member of the Portage Terriers. He’s now playing south of the border for Marian University, where he has one point in 12 games in his first year as a blueliner for the school in Fond du Luc, Wisc. Blake Young (2010-12 – 60 points) – In his third season with the Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs, Young scored his first career college goal in October during a season-opening win over the Michigan Tech Huskies. The Bulldogs have been trading the number one ranking in the NCAA this season with the Denver Pioneers and the Penn State Nittany Lions. Layne Young (2013-15 – 92 points) – Since moving up to the North Stars, Young has become one of the most feared offensive players in the SJHL. After winning the rookie of the year award last year, Young is currently tied for second in league scoring this year with 51 points in 38 games.
