Mayor’s Message
There are many advantages to having kids participate in team sports such as minor hockey. They learn about teamwork, building trust with their teammates, dealing with stress, and setting goals – all valuable skills that kids need to develop to be successful throughout life and develop life long friendships. Kids active in sports develop confidence and learn how to deal with winning and losing with grace. Research has shown that children who participate in sports perform better in school. Hard work, dedication by players, coaches, parents, officials, volunteers and fans are what make minor hockey in North Battleford such a great success! Best wishes and remember to keep your head up and your stick on the ice.
Ryan Bater Mayor
Mayor’s Message On Behalf of Council and the residents of Battleford, I would like to extend a sincere THANK YOU to the many volunteers who contribute to the success of minor hockey each year. Whether you are a coach, assistant coach, trainer, manager, official or a behind-the-scenes volunteer; I commend you for the support in promoting teamwork and fair play throughout Minor Hockey in Battleford. To the families who brave early mornings, winter weather and cold rinks to cheer on their teams, a huge THANKS. To all the players; continue to play the game you love and remember to always have fun and play fair as each of you are young ambassadors of Battleford whether on the road or at home. Have a great hockey season. Mayor Ames Leslie Town of Battleford
Amson to play university hockey in Ontario By Lucas Punkari Sports Reporter
For the last four seasons, Keara Amson has been taking to the ice as a forward for the Battlefords Sharks in the Saskatchewan Midget AAA Hockey League. Starting this fall, the 17-year-old will be entering a whole new level of hockey, as she’ll be moving to North Bay, Ont. to play for the Nipissing Lakers in U Sports. “I’m really excited about it and I’m already putting in the work to get ready for playing out there,” Amson said. “The school has given me a workout program that I’ve already started doing, and I’ll be spending a lot of time in the off-season working on my mental game, in addition to getting faster and stronger.” It was a lengthy process for the Radisson native to find the perfect fit for where she wanted to play post-secondary hockey, as she began to contact schools two years ago. In the end though, it was a conversation with former Sharks teammate Jetta Derenoski that put Nipiss-

ing at the front of the line for Amson. “I had talked to her about what the team was like and she’s taking the nursing program there, which is what I’m planning to study,” Amson said. “Chatting with her was very helpful. She let me
know to expect and everything seemed to go smoothly from there.” The Lakers, who compete in the Ontario University Athletics conference, have been around for just five years but have already become one of the top programs in the league.

We look forward to working with you next year.
After a second place finish in the standings last year, they are currently in fifth place this season with a 10-4-2 record. “The head coach [former NHL player Darren Turcotte] is really welcoming and that also played a huge role in me joining the
team,” Amson said. Amson is currently enjoying her best season to date with the Sharks, as she’s set a new career high total in points with 14 in 23 games. “I would have to say that I have a lot more confidence now than I did when
I first joined the team,” Amson said. “I’ve always tried to be a hard-working player since playing in Midget AAA, but I feel like I’ve become a lot more skilled over the years. “Her whole game has improved since she came here,” Sharks head coach Gary Berggren added. “She’s become a faster player over the years and I think the improvements in her overall skill has made her a compete all-around player.” Amson has become one of the leaders for the Sharks, as she was named the captain for this year’s squad. “I’ve had the chance to play with some great leaders on the Sharks over the years and I try to take the lessons I’ve learned from them into my role as a captain,” Amson said. “I’m not the most vocal player out there, but I try to let my actions do the talking for the younger players when we are in a game. “She really brings out the best in the girls out on the ice,” Berggren added. “She really encourages them to be the best player that they can be at all times.”

Stars alumni across all corners of the hockey world By Lucas Punkari Sports Reporter
There’s nothing quite like watching a hockey player develop from playing at a minor hockey level to making it on the big stage in the National Hockey League. Area residents got to see Colby Cave do just that in December, as the 23-yearold from Battleford made his NHL debut with the Boston Bruins just before Christmas. Before getting signed the Bruins in 2015 and prior to suiting up for the Western Hockey League’s Swift Current Broncos in 2011, Cave was a member of the Saskatchewan Midget AAA Hockey League’s Battlefords Stars from 2009 to 2011 and had 72 points in 86 games. Cave’s journey is one of a number of different paths that Stars alumni have been on since finishing up their Midget AAA careers, many of which are profiled below. Kenzie Arnold (201516 – 17 points) – After putting up seven points in 49 games in his first sea-
son in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League, Arnold has increased his scoring totals in his second campaign with the Nipawin Hawks as he’s put up 11 points in 34 games. Spencer Bast (2012-15 – 139 points) – Following two seasons in the WHL with the Kamloops Blazers and the Moose Jaw Warriors, Bast is now finishing off his junior hockey career with the Alberta Junior Hockey League’s Whitecourt Wolverines and has 27 points in 36 games. Donavon Beatty (201517 – 16 points) – While most players tend to stay out West after graduating from midget hockey, Beatty headed to Nova Scotia this season. As a member of the Valley Wildcats of the Maritime Hockey League, he’s put up six points in 32 games. Josh Bly (2012-14 – 105 points) – The third highest scorer in the SJHL last season has moved up to U Sports this year and is in his freshman campaign with the Mount Royal Cougars in Calgary, where he’s put up five points in 20
games. Tanner Brewster (2015-16 – 30 points) – After splitting time last season with the AJHL’s Lloydminster Bobcats and the SJHL’s La Ronge Ice Wolves, Brewster has shown a lot of improvement with La Ronge this year as he has 16 points in 38 games to sit third in team scoring. Braydon Buziak (201415 – 18 points) – Following a trip to the WHL final last season, Buziak returned to the Regina Pats this year and had seven points with the 2018 Memorial Cup hosts before he was traded to the Victoria Royals just after Christmas. The 19-year-old has three points in nine games so far with his new team. Kaleb Dahlgren (201315 – 64 points) – Dalhgren is in his final season of junior hockey with the Humboldt Broncos, where he has 23 points in 31 games. He’s on pace to surpass the point totals he put up over two campaigns with the Notre Dame Hounds, where he had 33 points in 107 games. Mackenzie Donovan
President’s Message
Battlefords Minor Hockey Association 2017 was a great year for BMHA and we are looking forward to what 2018 has in store for us. The Battleford Minor Hockey Association Board of Directors continued with our focus for player and coach development this year. This season, we teamed up with Jordan Trach and Blake Tatchell from Trach Powerskating & Skills. We were able to put a large number of our players through the program regularly while also being able to offer the program to our coaches and referees. We have also been able to partner with Moosomin First Nation and the Village of Maymont to provide additional ice for our players. We are once again grateful to Mandy Lehman for continuing with the female development program! This program allows our females to play together on all female teams. This year, we have been able to have a Novice and Atom team and I know that it is her goal to have a team for every division! One of the things that we are most proud of this year is how far our young referees have come. Sheldon Revet has been instrumental in developing our youngest officials by helping them to gain the skills required, and most importantly, to gain confidence! Our young players are constantly learning and it is no different for our young officials. As an Association, we will continue to support them as they grow. For the fourth year, it has been our pleasure to help Bauer & Canadian Tire introduce the love of hockey to 6-10 year olds who have never registered for minor hockey. To date, we are proud to say that we have been able to assist with putting 160+ new players on the ice. Huge thank you to Greg Cameron, Kayla Wakelin, Kelly Strain & all the volunteers for making this program possible. Volunteering is the commitment of time and energy for the benefit of our organization and the community without personal gain. Our Association absolutely could not function without our coaches, managers, and parent volunteers. These individuals put in countless hours to ensure our players learn skills, team play, sportsmanship and an overall love for the sport. We ask everyone to take some time and thank these people for everything they do for our players. We also want to send a big thank you to the SJHL North Star hockey club for providing all of our registered players with a season pass. It is fantastic to see so many of our players bonding and spending time together while watching their favorite sport! We want to say thank you to our office staff - Kelly, Kerilee and Carmen! These ladies keep the day to day operations of BMHA moving and organized. There is a lot that goes into running this Association and we most certainly could not do it without them. And to my fellow Board of Directors – I am humbled to be able to work alongside such a fantastic group of individuals. Your passion, vision, and commitment to BMHA truly inspires me and I couldn’t be more proud to be a part of this team. Please continue supporting the Jumpstart & KidSport programs. These programs have always been there to help us keep kids playing hockey!
Best of luck to our teams heading to Playoffs and Provincials!
Go Barons!!! Go Sharks!!!
Jenni Wuttunee President - BMHA
(2016-17 – 24 points) – After starting off his junior hockey career with the La Ronge Ice Wolves, Donovan has moved on to the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League’s Golden Rockets and has four points in 12 games. Jordan Fransoo (2008-09 – five points) – The former Ottawa Senators draft pick is in his fourth season on the blueline for the Saskatchewan Huskies, where he has one assist in 15 games for the perrenial contender for the University Cup. Derek Frater (2014-15 – 15 points) – Following three seasons with the La Ronge Ice Wolves, where he had 29 points in 116 SJHL games, Frater was traded to the Manitoba Junior Hockey League’s Swan Valley Stampeders in November. The Regina native has put up eight points in 20 games thus far for the Stampeders. Parker Gavlas (201617 – 17 points) – A successful season at the Midget AAA level, Gavlas made the jump to the WHL as he was signed by the Regina
Pats in August. After seven games on their blueline, he was reassigned to the SJHL’s Yorkton Terriers and has 10 assists in 21 contests. Troy Gerein (2012-15 – 60 points) – Having won a SJHL championship last April, Gerein has split time at forward and defence for the Battlefords North Stars as they look to capture a second straight title. The Wilkie product is in his third year for the team and has 12 points in 24 games. Ben Hiltz (2015-16 – 23 points) – In his second season for his hometown Weyburn Red Wings, Hiltz has been a breakout performer in the SJHL. Coming off an eightpoint campaign last year, the 18-year-old is now leading the team in scoring with 40 points in 34 games. Kaelan Holt (2014-15 – 49 points) – As part of the high flying Estevan Bruins offence, Holt has 48 points in 40 games to sit eighth in league scoring in his final junior hockey season and is set to smash through his previous season high total of 56 points that he put up
last year. Austin King-Cunningham (2016-17 – 11 points) – At the conclusion of last season, King-Cunningham joined the WHL’s Vancouver Giants and had an assist in three games. He played five games with the Giants before moving to the SJHL with the Estevan Bruins, where he has three assists in 17 games. However, the 17-yearold from Pilot Butte has returned to the WHL to play for the Tri-City Americans, who acquired his rights from the Giants in a trade this month. Casey Knight (2009-10 – 34 points) – The St. Walburg native is in his fifth campaign with the Toronto Varsity Blues in U Sports and has three points in 19 games this year. Michael Korol (201314 – 12 points) – After three seasons with the SJHL’s Humboldt Broncos, Korol has headed south of the border to play in the NCAA Divison III ranks for the Norwich Cadets, where he has an assist in nine games.
